Easy to forget now, but back when Valiant Comics originally launched its first book in 1991, it was something of a game changer. Everyone now always remembers Image, with its high profile creators, but that came a year later. Valiant, with Jim Shooter as its creative ‘show runner’, at least at first, showed that it was possible to take on the Big Two, Marvel and DC, at their own game. Where Valiant were different was that from the start they designed the Valiant Universe, so they would have a growing stable of books that interconnected and shared common ground. Up to then most independent companies put out good comics, but usually unrelated and often creator owned. Valiant as a publisher should get a lot more respect than they seem to. But I digress.

This month is Wtf month at DC – a completely pointless marketing gimmick they’ve trotted out for no reason other than to try and get some column inches (what could they be planning? etc). It also means each DC comic this month has a fold out cover with an eye-catching image implying that inside is a totally bizarre story to match the cover. Constantine #2’s cover shows a deceased Constantine lying in a pool of blood with the tagline “Dead in the streets…” and the fold out continues “…at the hands of the Spectre!” showing Constantine’s soul being dragged off by the Spectre. And, like most of the other Wtf covers, Constantine’s has nothing whatsoever to do with the contents of this comic. If the point of Wtf month was to have the reader wonder why they even bothered with it in the first place, all I can say is: Great job,...

When Phil asked if I’d be interested in writing a regular comics column for the new site, I was happy to confirm that I most certainly was. In my mid to late teens I’d started picking up or being lent the odd graphic novel with some of Alan Moore’s stuff and Dark Horse’s The Mask books being my entry points. At university I read a lot of the well-renowned Batman books (Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween and so forth) but it is only in the last year or so that I’ve started reading more titles, more often and in the last few months, begun picking up monthly books.
I’ve continued to check out numerous Bat Family titles and others in the New 52, numerous Image publications and first time, read a little Marvel. I’ve got a small number of books...

Finally, DC publish a decent New 52 comic! Jeff Lemire, fresh from his success with the critically acclaimed and bestselling “Animal Man” has turned his attention to John Constantine, an occult detective from Engerland. Co-writing is Ray Fawkes and the artist is Renato Guedes.
In this reboot, John sets off on a chase to find three mystical objects that, when assembled, will form Croydon’s Compass, a device that locates every magical resource available. In the wrong hands, it could be disastrous, so the chase is on for John to get all the pieces before the numerous dark magic practitioners with evil machinations do.
For a reboot, Lemire/Fawkes are pretty faithful to the original character. John is a bastard as he always was and treats people pretty poorly to get what he needs. He also knows his way around a spell and has a devil-may-care attitude that’s always been one of his best points.

After appearing in 300 issues of Vertigo’s Hellblazer and becoming the leader of Justice League Dark, John Constantine makes his solo debut in the New 52. Many of the trademarks of the old character are here. There are his sarcastic voiceovers to which are added remarks and aphorisms on the nature, use, and abuse of magic. Constantine is still a chain smoker and orders a whiskey on his plane trip to Norway. Even though he never sets foot in his native England, he is street smart and knows when his drink is poisoned and cons his traveling companion Chris into paying for their lodging. But there is one difference: John is part of a bigger universe than he was back in Hellblazer, but he won’t be teaming up...

Bittersweet news today for John Constantine fans as DC Comics announced that “Hellblazer”, the longest running Vertigo title that began as a spinoff of Alan Moore’s “Swamp Thing”, will soon be wrapping up its run with #300 in February of next year. Featuring the chain-smoking character of John Constantine, the British occult detective, “Hellblazer” first launched in 1988 and has since grown to become one of the most successful books in Vertigo’s stable of titles.
Fortunately for fans, Constantine won’t be gone for long as the publisher also revealed that a brand new series is set to arrive next year for the current Justice League Dark member.
DC Comics has confirmed that Robert Vendetti and Renato Guides will be launching a new ongoing series for the anti-hero detective that will be set within the DC’s relaunched universe. Titled “Constantine”, the upcoming series promises to keep many of the...

Hellblazer will conclude with issue #300 to pave the way for a new solo series starring John Constantine, DC Comics has announced. The anti-hero will feature in his own comic as part of the publisher's 'New 52' slate after the Vertigo series wraps up, The AP reports. Robert Venditti will handle writing duties on the new title with Renato Guedes providing artwork. The protagonist will be based on his incarnation in Justice League Dark, which debuted last September. Venditti said: "He's going to be the same age that he is in Justice (more)...

John Constantine has been part of the New 52 from the very beginning with the Justice League: Dark series. However, prior to the DC universe reboot back in September 2011, Constantine had his own solo title under DC's mature comic book line, Vertigo. Well news today reveals that with issue #300 in February, Constantine's Vertigo series will come to an end and a New 52 solo series for the character will begin. Issue #300 of Hellblazer will be written by Peter Milligan with art from Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini. However in the New 52, writer Robert Venditti will launch the tile with Renato Guedes handling the art duties. Said Venditti, "He's going to be the same age that he is in Justice League Dark and the same character that people know and recognize - the drinking and smoking, the con man aspect of him - that's going to...

In 1982, the Marvel Universe mourned as Captain Marvel died. Since then, many other heroes have used the name and we've been teased more than once with a potential return of the popular hero who was originally created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. Well, after a Skrull imposter recently passed on the mantle to Noh-Varr (who is now calling himself The Protector and can be seen also on the cover below) it appears as if the real deal is finally making his return. The question which now remains is whether this is in fact Mar-Vell or someone altogether new... •Captain Marvel reborn to unite all Kree! • Captain Marvel, The Protector and Ms. Marvel vs The Avengers! • Who is Minister Marvel and why has he drawn the Phoenix to the Kree homeworld? Fans of the animated series Batman Beyond were given a treat in the spring of 2010 with the arrival of Superman/Batman Annual #4.
