It took some time for Holger Rune to get to his best, but he eventually did, overpowering Max Purcell in his first match at the 2024 Brisbane International.
The 2024 Atp season officially started a few days ago, but now, also the calendars have turned, and the top seed at the 2024 Brisbane International needed to fight against the home player to move to the second round of the tournament.
The draw of the first tournament of the year paired up the young Dane with world no. 45, Purcell. The Australian knew he would get the support from the home crowd, and that was probably also one of the reasons why he won 12 of the first 13 rallies, leading 3-0 early on.
But Rune managed to recover the break soon, levelling the score of the opening set at 4-4, but it lasted only for a short period, as the Australian went on another streak, this...

The 2024 Brisbane International will be held from December 31st, 2023, to January 7th, 2024, and the draw for the Atp 250 tournament has been released.
The tournament in Brisbane has been highly anticipated due to multiple reasons. One of them is the season start, but the other one is the fact that the 22-time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal, is returning to the tennis courts.
The Spaniard doesn't have high expectations ahead of his comeback, but he'll have a chance to ease into the tournament, as he'll face one of the qualifiers in the first round of the tournament, with his possible second-round opponent being the winner of the match between the eighth-seeded Aslan Karatsev and home wild card Jason Kubler.
The top seed at the tournament is the Danish prodigy Holger Rune, who will take on Max Purcell on his return to the courts, with the winner of the match meeting either...

There is a famous quote that says to get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with - and three Wta players have most certainly lived by these words during the close season.
This past weekend, Shelby Rogers became a newlywed after exchanging vows with her long-time boyfriend John Slavik - a lower-level hockey player. The newlyweds first met on a blind date organized by friends three years ago and got engaged this year at Rogers' home tournament in Charleston.
The 31-year-old American has been out of action since a first-round defeat to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon. Rogers had been dealing with muscle injuries for quite some time and posted photos of herself in a hospital bed in the aftermath of his defeat to the Kazakh.
Thankfully for Rogers, she was out of rehab soon after, although she never played again in the second half of the season.

At least 14 tennis players have confirmed their participation in an upcoming exhibition tennis tournament to be played in the Russian port city of St. Petersburg.
Obviously, organizing a tennis tournament in Russia in the current climate is subject to controversy from many quarters. One Ukrainian account on X with the name Ukrainian Tennis Btu dug out disturbing information about this tournament and its financiers.
The account alleges that Gazprom (who own private military battalions) are the sponsors of this event and, together with the company CEO and media partners, have been openly supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Several fans have voiced concerns about the number and identity of players who have committed to play at this event, considering that the Atp and Wta have suspended staging tennis tournaments in Russia and Belarus since the war in Ukraine began in 2022.

Novak Djokovic will finish the 2023 season as the year-end No. 1 for the eighth time in his career, while there are notable changes in the world's Top 10.
The men's tennis season drew to a close on Sunday, with Djokovic lifting his 7th Atp Finals title with a resounding victory over Jannik Sinner in the final. Djokovic brings the curtain down to an incredible year with a five-digit points tally.
With 11,245 points, Djokovic finished top, and clear of second-placed Carlos Alcaraz who earned 8,855 points. The Top 10 places did not change during the week in Turin. That means Daniil Medvedev finished third ahead of Atp Finals runner-up Sinner in fourth.
Taylor Fritz will end 2023 as the top-ranked American man and inside the world's Top 10. But Casper Ruud exits that exclusive club. It's the first time since 2020 that Ruud will have a double-digit year-end ranking after failing to qualify for the Atp Finals.

For the 399th week, Novak Djokovic will start as the Atp's No. 1 player, while the Atp's regular season ended with two Frenchmen hoisting titles in Sofia and Metz, respectively.
This past week, the top eight players contesting for the year-end championships in Turin elected to give their bones some much-needed rest, hence the high number of withdrawals at the last two Atp 250s running concurrently in Bulgaria and France.
It wasn't until Sunday when the Atp Finals officially kicked off, and Djokovic put the final touch of another record-setting season by locking the year-end No. 1 ranking. Carlos Alcaraz ran him close in one of the tightest finishes to an Atp race.
The Spaniard needs at least one round-robin to be certain of finishing the year as the World No. 2. He leads Daniil Medvedev by 1,255 points. The current Top 10 will remain as it is, which means Casper Ruud can't trespass...

The 2023 Moselle Open will be the final Atp tournament of the regular tennis season, and the draw for this year's event has been released.
Main draw action begins on Sunday, November 5, where a 28-player singles field will have the opportunity to fight for the right to become Atp champion. Some of the Atp's big names are not resting on their laurels and still have their eyes on the prize.
One of them is top seed Holger Rune , a surprise entrant in Metz. The Dane will be encouraged by his form at his last two tournaments, notably at the Paris Masters where he ran Novak Djokovic very close in the quarterfinal.
Rune will get the chance to bounce back in the second round against one of Fabio Fognini or Brazilian clay court specialist Thiago Seyboth Wild. The 20-year-old sealed his qualification for the Atp Finals and should play without any added pressure.

Felix Auger-Aliassime completed one of the most improbable title runs on the Atp Tour by successfully defending the Swiss Indoors trophy.
Auger-Aliassime, who entered the tournament as a late wild card, won the clash of the heavyweights in Basel, beating Poland's Hubert Hurkacz 7-6, 7-6 in the final on Sunday . As expected, the near two-hour serving feast did not feature a single break of serve.
The Canadian tallied more aces (13 to 12), higher first-serve points won (93% to 81%), and hammered more winners (43 to 28). Considering his appalling run of results coming to the event, the week in Basel is undoubtedly a rare chink of sunlight in what has been a disastrous campaign for a player with Top 10 ambitions. So how did the man from Montreal get his season back on track?

Taylor Fritz played a pretty decent match at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel, but he lost the match despite winning 10 points more than his opponent.
Scoring in sports is generally pretty straightforward. In most sports, the bigger number usually wins, and while tennis is the same, there is some nuance to it. For example, you might win a match despite winning fewer games, and you might win a match despite winning fewer points.
It doesn't happen often, but it's possible, which isn't the case for almost any other sports. You can't score fewer goals in football and win the match, the same way you can score fewer points in basketball and win the match.
In tennis, though, you can, and that's what happened to Taylor Fritz in Basel, though he found himself on the wrong side of that oddity. So, how did it exactly happen?
Well, he faced Russian talent...

Korda is making his third straight main draw appearance at the Citi Open this week as the eighth seed, opening up against Russia's Alexander Shevchenko on Tuesday evening. Returning to Washington always ranks higher on Korda's schedule grid.
That is not purely because it's on home soil, but it's a tournament that evokes plenty of wonderful memories from his childhood days. The Citi Open was among his pitstops as a junior traveling with his father who used to coach Radek Stepanek over a decade ago.
"Washington has to be one of my favorite stops definitely on tour, just kind of being here as a 12, 13, and 14-year-old kid with my dad and Radek Stepanek. Just to kind of experience everything was really cool.

The Norwegian won the tournament in 2021, but this year, the defending champion is Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina. As the top seed, Ruud has a bye in the first round, and in the second round of the competition, he'll start against either Alexander Shevchenko, or the brother of the defending champion, Juan Manuel Cerundolo .

The 2023 Roland Garros, also called the French Open, will run from May 28th to June 11th and the Atp draw was already released.
In 2023, the tournament will be held without the defending champion Rafael Nadal, who withdrew from the tournament. But there certainly won't be a lack of challengers as Novak Djokovic will try to use the absence of his biggest rival to win his 23rd Grand Slam title.
But the Serb is seeded only third in Paris, and in the first round, he will play against Aleksandar Kovacevic in an attempt to overcome the bad clay-court form that he had this year. But all eyes will be on the top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
The 20-year-old suffered a shocking loss in Rome, but he will try to use that to his advantage in the first round against one of the qualifiers. If he'll meet the Serbian superstar, it will happen already...

Not one, not two, but three hundred wins for Daniil Medvedev on the Atp Tour after he defeated fellow compatriot Alexander Shevchenko at the 2023 Madrid Open.
In the second round of the 2023 Madrid Open, the second-seeded Medvedev recorded only his second-ever win in the Spanish capital. The Russian was never particularly successful on the clay courts, and if someone told him that his 300th win will come on the red dirt, he would probably laugh.
But that became reality on Monday afternoon as he clashed with fellow Russian Alexander Shevchenko, who battled his way through the qualifying in Madrid and played two incredible matches to set up a third-round meeting with Medvedev.
The two know each other really well as they revealed earlier this year, but not from the tennis courts, but from playing video games, where they got to know each other. And it was the lack of familiarity...

Madrid (Spain), April 29 (Ians) World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev made a rock-solid start to his Madrid Open campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori, here on Saturday.
Medvedev stayed patient against the World No. 164 Vavassori, notching a late break of serve in each set to complete an 82-minute triumph.
Vavassori had claimed the biggest win of his career against Andy Murray in the first round at the Caja Magica, but the second-seeded Medvedev’s combination of huge serving and relentless baseline hitting proved a step too far for the Italian.
“I played well today. I felt good,” said Medvedev, who saved all three break points he faced in his second-round win.
“There were some tight moments in the match, but when we had rallies from the baseline, I felt like many times I was in control. I’m really happy about my level,” he added.

Tournaments on the clay courts are usually not a success for Daniil Medvedev but he wants to change that at the 2023 Madrid Open.
In the past, the Russian won only one match at La Caja Magica. His win came in 2021 when he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round, ending a streak of two first-round losses in 2018 and 2019.
Last year, Medvedev missed almost a full clay-court season, and so naturally he wasn't present in Madrid. This year, the second-seed Russian aims to overcome his hate for the surface, and he showed that already in Monte Carlo, where he reached quarterfinals.
In the second round of the 2023 Madrid Open, he avoided fellow Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, who lost in the first round to Andrea Vavassori from Italy. The two never met before on the Atp Tour and both surely wanted to start their H2H with a win.

Grigor Dimitrov won't have good memories of the 2023 Barcelona Open as almost everything went wrong for him over the week.
It all started a few days ago, when the Bulgarian player had his 70,000€ watch stolen in Barcelona. It all happened very fast and no one was harmed, but it surely wasn't a pleasant experience for Dimitrov. After the incident, he took on Emilio Gomez from Ecuador in the second round of the 2023 Barcelona Open and advanced through to round three.
There, Dimitrov was set to take on the eighth-seeded Alex de Minaur from Australia as the two wanted to dissect their 'rivalry' on the Atp Tour. Before, they met four times with each player winning two matches and so one could march ahead in the head-to-head on Thursday.
But unfortunately for Dimitrov and fans, who awaited them at the Pista Andres Gimeno in Real Club de Tennis Barcelona, this match...
