Long term Toon target Erik Pieters was photographed by Newcastle fans at yesterday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.
You can see an image of Pieters alongside a Newcastle fan above.
When a reader of the popular Newcastle United blog nufcblog.com asked Pieters if he was close to joining Newcastle from his club Psv Eindhoven, he cryptically said;
“Possibly – I don’t know.”
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew first revealed interest in Pieters last summer but a range of factors including; an inability to agree a fee with Psv, a slew of injuries and sadly the death of a family member all factored into scuppering a potential move to the Premier League from happening.
The Magpies have been linked with interest in Pieters again this summer but a new injury, which is still keeping him sidelined, again played against a move from happening and from appearing at the Euro’s.

Leaked images of Tottenham Hotspur’s home and away kit for the forthcoming 2012/2013 season have appeared at a club fansite. Thanks to Spursfan1982 for sending them over to us.
The brand new all white home kit, which goes against the Spurs tradition of navy blue shorts, gives the club a “Real Madrid” feel and are being modeled by Michael Dawson, Scott Parker and Kyle Walker. The kits have been produced by Under Amour and are yet to be officially unveiled by the club (though we would expect an official reveal is likely to have been brought forward now).
The all dark navy blue away kit features Gareth Bale (who recently signed a long term contract at the club), Rafael Van Der Vaart and Michael Dawson once again!
Perhaps tellingly (though do promotional images really mean anything?), the shirt campaign perhaps suggest Van Der Vaart is going to be staying at...

Thursday evening sees the first quarter-final clash of Euro 2012 take place in Warsaw. It will be a match contested by Group A winners the Czech Republic and Group B runners-up Portugal, with the winner to face either France or Spain in the semi-final. I’m going to take look at each team’s journey to the quarter-final, main men, team tactics and the likely outcome of what promises to be a lively encounter.
Journey so far:
The Czech Republic made it through qualifying via the play offs after finishing as runners up to reigning European champions Spain. They were drawn to play Montenegro in the play offs, and the Czechs duly dispatched them with a 2-0 win in Prague and a 1-0 victory in Montenegro. They were then drawn to be in a group with co-hosts Poland, 2004 champions Greece and a strong Russia team who topped their group in qualifying.

If the Spurs directors decide that current French manager and former Manchester United centre-half Laurent Blanc is indeed the man they need to sort the club out after Harry Redknapp’s departure, then they can potentially count on the manager’s wealth of knowledge relating to the current crop of French players.
The French league has recently proved a rich mine for affordable talent, thanks predominantly to the willingness of Newcastle United Chief Scout Graham Carr to look for the opportunities to bring talented players across the Channel. The success of both Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa at St James Park this year has turned more heads than Carr’s towards French squads, and the relative in-expense of those players in comparison to established English players, and their quick integration into the Premier League makes them even more attractive.

Euro 2012 latest from the Group B match between Portugal and Holland at the Metalist Stadium in Khrakiv, Ukraine…
Cristiano Ronaldo’s amazing performance in tonight’s Euro 2012 game between Portugal and Holland has all but sent the Netherlands out of this year’s Euro 2012 Championships. His two goals in an all around confident and continuously attack minded play was too much for the shaky Dutch defence, who all night struggled to cope with Portugal’s pace and flare.
On the 74th minute, Holland were all but dead and buried. They had to win by two clear goals against Portugal on the night to qualify for the Quarter-Finals after a disastrous Euro 2012 campaign when they lost their two opening matches against Denmark and Germany but found themselves 2-1 down on the night.
They had started the night well with a goal on the 11th minute from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart...

The race for those coveted Champions League spots kicks into another gear this weekend with three big matches in the Premier League. Arsenal take on Chelsea at the Emirates, and Tottenham Hotspur travel to Queens Park Rangers for the evening kick-off on Espn.
Sandwiched in-between both them games is a good old fashioned 3pm kick-off between Newcastle United and Stoke City.
Newcastle United will be hoping to keep up their momentum that has seen them win five games off the bounce and hit the lofty heights of fifth place, only an inferior goal difference keeping them from fourth.
Stoke City meanwhile are looking a tired side after their European excursions this season and are probably already thinking about how they can improve next year, though Tony Pulis will never field a side that won’t put up a fight.
Here’s four key things to look out for in tomorrow...

Team news ahead of this early afternoon’s crucial North London derby between struggling Arsenal and high flying Tottenham Hotspur. Kick-off at the Emirates is at 1.30pm and the game is being screened live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Team news ahead of Stevenage and Tottenham Hotspur’s Fa Cup fifth-round tie at the Broadhall Way. Kick-off is at 2pm and the match is televised live on ITV 1 in the UK.
Stevenage manager Gary Smith has no fresh injury concerns ahead of this afternoon’s match, easily the biggest of the season. Smith, whose brave and hard-working side knocked out Newcastle United in the last round, are likely to stick with the same XI that beat Sheffield Wednesday this past Tuesday… likely meaning a start for former Spurs ‘keeper Chris Day.
One player that isn’t at Smith’s disposal is Chuks Aneke, who is on-loan from Arsenal and under the terms of the transfer is not able to play in the competition for the League One side.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp won’t be able to call upon Rafael Van Der Vaart who failed a fitness test over his calf injury.

Manchester City will be hoping to retain their astonishing 100% home league record with a few key players missing and Roberto Mancinci urging Sheik Mansour to get the considerable chequebook out to make sure that City can win the Premier League for the first time this season.
Meanwhile Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes that a defeat today at the Eithad Stadium against Manchester City won’t mean they are out of the title race but he must deep down believe that stopping City going eight points ahead of them today is going to be vital for them to stay in the chase. And if they do pull off an amazing result today and their North London rivals Arsenal do them a favour at the Emirates, Spurs could end the day two points behind City in second place, ahead of Manchester United. Nobody could deny they were in the title race then!

The big story for Spurs in the week was Harry Redknapp undergoing heart surgery, an operation that will keep him missing from today’s game. So the only Spurs manager in the dugout will be a former one, Fulham boss and former Tottenham favourite Martin Jol. Going into the game the talk on many pundits lips has been whether Spurs can continue their rich vein of form with a win over their London peers without Harry, but the team will no doubt be aware of what is expected from them today and will be hoping to send the perfect get well soon message.
This is two attack minded sides and with the Sky camera’s showing this game on their marquee Super Sunday slot, they obviously believe we are in store for a cracker this afternoon.

Some are calling today’s Sky Sports Super Sunday 4pm kick-off against Spurs unbeaten ‘Newcastle United’s first real test of the season’, but in doing so are completely forgetting that they held Champions League side Arsenal to a draw at home on the opening day and that they won the always heated derby away at Sunderland, among other impressive results this campaign. Nevertheless, it is true that the match could be a significant indicator for whether The Magpies can really go toe-to-toe with the best in the league and not blink. If they win today, whose to say they couldn’t become a top six or top seven side by May?
For Harry Redknapp’s Spurs, they have come back strongly from demoralisingly heavy defeats against the two Manchester clubs and have now won four league games in a row, including a victory against North London rivals Arsenal.

Finally, after waiting all summer for summer to arrive, it does. In October. If someone can explain this ‘Indian Summer’ term that’s bandied about, I’d gladly listen. There’s a time and a place for warm weather, and that place is called ‘on holiday’. Whoever claims that sunshine and heat make for ‘glorious’ conditions in which to enjoy football, is sorely mistaken.
Looking across the terraces, a sea of shaven heads red and dripping with sweat while trains and buses across the land are packed full of humanity at it’s clammiest, all accompanied with a scent that suggests antiperspirant has gone out of fashion.
In short, hot weather isn’t nice, it’s bloody horrible may it soon piss off so we can welcome back big jumpers, naked trees and rainy afternoons. Lunging tackles and match postponements, much more my cup of tea.
As not to buck...

Updated: Harry Redknapp was filmed by Sky Sports News trying to get home tonight and said they had tried to bring in ‘a big one’ in the last few hours but no deal could be agreed. Make of that what you will.
Harry Redknapp is at it again. Exactly 12 months ago, after telling everyone that he wouldn’t make a signing on transfer deadline day, the Spurs boss pulled the biggest rabbit out of the hat of his whole career when he brought in Real Madrid and Dutch ace Rafael Van Der Vaart to White Hart Lane on a permanent deal. Now with two hours to go before the end of the transfer window, reports are emerging that he is making moves for former World Player of the Year Kaka, also from Madrid.

After another of this summer’s lengthy transfer sagas, Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp has got his man. Scott Parker, the former Charlton, Chelsea and Newcastle United midfielder has joined the club on a permanent basis today after handing in a transfer request yesterday at Sam Allardyce’s Championship side.
The midfielder was linked earlier in the transfer window with a £4m bid from Qpr, and suggested as a possible target for Stoke and Aston Villa but he now takes his place in the Spurs midfield after Redknapp chased him for what seems like the entire summer. For their money (unconfirmed at this stage), Tottenham are bringing in an England international who has dynamism and drive like few others operating in his position in the Premiership currently. He is to borrow an old cliche a box-to-box midfielder who always looks impressive when running with the ball at his feet – something...

Why anyone believes what the ultimate Wheeler Dealer of the transfer market Harry Redknapp says about transfer policies at Tottenham Hotspur is beyond me but the press eat it up every year. What people need to understand is that he tells the press a pack of lies every single transfer window, each time he talks to newspapers and the television media, he does it to further an agenda and in the case of Modric, to put the challenge down to Chelsea to make an incredible offer for the player. Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy is exactly the same.
It was never the case that Modric was never for sale. He was just never for sale until Tottenham got the biggest price they could.

After yesterday’s resolution to the Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona transfer saga, one question alone should now be dominating the corridors of Arsenal’s camp, just as it most certainly will be among fans: how do we replace the captain and strongest midfielder?
The Fabregas question is one that comes with a unique set of issues based on what the player offered to the team: he was invariably called their playmaker, the conduit through which the majority of their progressive play came, but he was perhaps better considered as Arsenal’s cornerstone. His defensive duties were after all just as important a part of his game, and in last season’s capitulation against Newcastle United, in which the team conspired to through away a four goal lead, it was no small coincidence that he was conspicuously absent in those duties during the second half.
So Arsenal don’t just need...

What have been the coolest things in the last year? Personally, I reckon Bad Lieutenant, Rafael Van Der Vaart and the continuing career of Bruce Springsteen must chart pretty highly, but then what the hell do I know? As it turns out, the good people at Stuff Magazine have conducted their own list of all things cool in the last twelve months and to celebrate the issue that lists these seventeen things, they threw a rather lovely party on Tuesday night.
The bash was held at the really rather nice Aqua Kyoto venue off Oxford Street. There were complimentary drinks to hand, stunning views of the capital and Spanish-themed canapés and music to enjoy.
