- Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich is a Russian oligarch, businessman, philanthropist and politician. He is best known outside Russia as the former owner of Chelsea, a Premier League football club in London, England, and is the primary owner of the private investment company Millhouse LLC. He was formerly Governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug from 2000 to 2008. According to Forbes, Abramovich's net worth was US$14.5 billion in 2021, making him the second-richest person in Israel, the eleventh-richest in Russia and the richest person in Portugal. Abramovich enriched himself in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, obtaining Russian state-owned assets at prices far below market value in Russia's controversial loans-for-shares privatization program. Abramovich is considered to have a good relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Bonitao
- His paternal family comes from Belarus. He grew up in poor conditions. Abramovich lost his mother after an abortion when he was 18 months old. His father died when he was four years old in a construction accident. He grew up as an orphan. He was later taken in by his paternal uncle. He spent his youth with him in the harsh Russian climate of Komi in northwestern Russia. He was raised in the Jewish faith. Traumatic experiences shaped this time and laid the foundation for his later social thinking. After finishing school, he studied economics in Ukhta. He then studied engineering at the Gubkin Oil and Gas Institute in Moscow. Abramovich was then drafted into the Soviet army for military service. Here he received training for ground troops in close combat. From 1987 to 1989 he was married to his wife Olga, who had a child.
In 1991 he married Irina, an Aeroflot stewardess, with whom he had five children. He made his debut in business when, after the fall of the USSR and the collapse of the communist system, he acquired shares in privatized state-owned companies at very low prices. He made his first fortune with the successful resale. His entry into the oil business began when he headed the Moscow office of the Swiss crude oil trader Runicom from 1993 to 1996. Abramovich now built up an extensive business empire, initially as a partner of the oligarch Boris Berezovsky. The holding Millhouse Capital, which he controls, owned 80% of Russia's fifth largest oil company Sibneft, 50% of the aluminum company RusAl and 26% of the airline Aeroflot. This also included a 37.5% stake in the car manufacturer Ruspromawto.
In 1999, Roman Abramovich was elected to the Duma as a representative for the impoverished Chukotka region. In this position, his commitment was particularly focused on supporting children and children's homes in Poland. He also received the right to immunity and impunity. From December 2000 to July 2008 he was elected governor of the poverty-stricken Chukotka. Here he succeeded the failed politician Alexander Nazarov. Roman Abramovich became the region's benefactor. He invested several hundred million US dollars from private funds in the construction of hospitals, universities and hotels. With his support, daycare centers were set up and the airport and roads were expanded. In business terms, he sold his Aeroflot shares to the state in March 2003. Millhouse sold the RusAl shares in two steps in 2003 and 2004 to Oleg Deripaska's Basowy Element group.
At the end of 2005, the semi-state gas company Gazprom took over a majority stake in Abramovich's oil company Sibneft and later renamed it Gazprom Neft. In the process, the entrepreneur rose to become one of the richest people in the world. In 2003, the sports-loving manager acquired the British first division club "FC Chelsea". The new, financially strong owner made it possible for the club to buy some of the best and most expensive football players in the world. Despite his social achievements, Abramovich did not remain uncontroversial. As a partner of Boris Berezovsky, who sold Abramovich his shares in Sibneft and had a dubious career himself, Abramovich's name was also often associated with favoritism in the Putin system. In July 2004 it became known that Abramovich had agreed to a three-year sponsorship of the CSKA Moscow football club by Sibneft. However, UEFA guidelines did not allow this, meaning a person is not allowed to own more than one football team.
The Russian billionaire made further headlines with the purchase of numerous real estate and luxury goods. He owns several of the largest private yachts in the world. Privately he settled in London. In March 2007, his marriage to Irina, with whom he has five children, ended in divorce. With his partner Darja Schukova he became the father of two children again. In 2008 he acquired several important paintings, including Francis Bacon's "Triptych" (1976), for 57.2 million euros, and "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" (1995) by Lucian Freud for 22.36 million euros. In the same year, Daria Zhukova opened the art museum "Garage Museum of Contemporary Art" in Moscow. The exhibition is based on the private collections of Dasha Zhukova and Abramovich. These form the largest selection of modern and contemporary art in Russia. In August 2017, the couple Zhukova and Abramovich announced their separation. In 2020, his fortune was estimated at over $14 billion.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Christian_Wolfgang_Barth
