The Asb Classic is New Zealand's only tour-level tournament and is usually contested in one of the oldest tennis facilities in the world.
The Asb Tennis Centre has been in existence since 1922, and it promises to showcase its wonderful hospitality to the 28 singles players competing in the men's edition this year. The Asb Classic is one of two Atp tournaments running in the week preceding the Australian Open.
At a time when most players are cautious about succumbing to any injury before a Grand Slam, nevertheless, the draw doesn't lack in star presence, and it was released at the weekend, throwing up some exciting matchups.
The top seed is Ben Shelton, who has been surprisingly left out of the USA's team to play the Davis Cup Qualifiers in February. The 21-year-old lefty has a tough draw, with a projected second-round meeting against Gael Monfils.

The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland offers players last chance to prepare for the first major of the season, and many took it, with the draw including quite a few interesting names.
For many players, it will be the first Atp tournament of the season, as they chose an approach of missing the first week, and playing the week before the 2024 Australian Open.
The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland is held from January 8th to 13th, and the top seed at the tournament is American tennis sensation, Ben Shelton, who as one of the top four seeds has a bye in the first round.
In the second round of the tournament, the 21-year-old will already face some real competition, as he can meet either Fabian Marozsan, who bested Carlos Alcaraz in 2023, or Gael Monfils, a veteran on the Atp Tour.

The 37th edition of the Montpellier Open, commonly known as Open Sud de France, will be played immediately after the conclusion of the first Grand Slam of 2024.
This Atp 250 tournament will run from January 29th to February 4th, consisting of a 28-player singles draw. The event will be played exclusively at Sud de France Arena, which is an indoor setting in the Montpellier suburb of Perols that houses almost 7,500 fans.
Some of the most iconic names in men's tennis have won this tournament in the past, including Yannick Noah, Pete Sampras, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and Andy Roddick - all of whom have won a Grand Slam.
The tournament organizers have done their best to bring a pool of richly talented players despite the limiting factor around a very constrained schedule in which most top players will have been competing in the final stages of the 2024 Australian Open.

Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina will be the main stars at the 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland, and they will meet already in the first round of the Wta 250 tournament.
The Asb Classic in Auckland is the only top-tier tennis tournament to be held in New Zealand, and this year's draw in the women's tournament has thrown up the most exciting curtain-raiser to an event in the opening week of the new season.
In her second coming as a tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki will face Elina Svitolina, the number two seed in Auckland. The match is slated to appear on Tuesday's Order of Play. One of their most endearing similarities is that they are two returning mothers.
Wozniacki memorably retired from professional tennis back in 2020 before taking a U-turn on that decision. She announced her shocking return to the tour last summer, playing in three tournaments during the US swing and performing admirably.

Gael Monfils has dealt with many injuries in the past year, but he's keen on keeping his career alive despite the struggles.
Monfils, like many others, is pretty aware that his best days are long gone. He's got more to give to tennis but it's becoming tougher with every day because the sport becomes more demanding while his body gets older.
During his peak, Monfils was susceptible to injuries, and it hasn't gotten any better over the years. He's always been a player whose body held him back more than his talent. Now, at 37, Monfils hopes for one last push, and he's capable of it.
He won the Stockholm Open this year, proving that he has more to give, but doing so is an entirely different matter. In a talk with Stuff.co.nz, Monfils revealed how he plans to extend his career for a bit more.
The reality is I love the sport.

Holger Rune bested Gael Monfils in four quarters to reach the Final Four of the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (Uts) Grand Final.
Earlier on Saturday, Holger "The Viking" Rune bested Alexander "The Bublik Enemy" Bublik to keep his Final Four hopes alive, while Gael "La Monf" Monfils was forced to retire against Jack "The Power" Draper.
That meant that their match would decide the last player to join the Final Four line-up. The Frenchman had to undergo a treatment to be ready for the match, but he got ready in time, and was ready to deliver a show in front of his good friends from French national football team, Hugo Lloris and Alphonse Areola, who were in the attendance.
But in the first quarter, Rune was the better player, and by quite a lot. The Dane won the opening quarter 17-9, and he was in a good mood during the interview between the quarters.

Jack Draper recorded already his second win at the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown Grand Final when he bested Gael Monfils, who was forced to retire mid-match.
After Holger Rune started the action-packed Saturday with win over Alexander Bublik, Jack "The Power" Draper and Gael "La Monf" Monfils played the second match at the 2023 Uts Grand Final in London.
After Day 1 of the round robin action, Draper had one win under his belt, and so did the Frenchman, who best Alexander Bublik in his first match at the tournament.
Therefore, this match was a crucial one, as for both players, it could mean qualifying for the Final Four, joining Andrey "Rublo" Rublev, who had already sealed his spot.
Draper, who is the home crowd favorite in his hometown, was the better player once again, but the first quarter proved to be a real challenge for both players. However, the Brit eventually emerged victorious.

Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina have been married for almost three years and are the only active tennis couple (husband and wife) on tour.

Recently, Monfils shared some of the valuable lessons he has picked up from his wife and Wta star Svitolina, which he detailed in his blog. The Frenchman, popularly known as "La Monf," will be in action at the Uts Grand Final in London this weekend.
The first lesson, which Monfils titled, "There is so much value in taking a stance," is based upon her wife's sense of purpose regarding her stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Novak Djokovic's coach, Goran Ivanisevic, did not win the Atp's 2023 Coach of the Year award, and many were upset about it, including the Serbian himself.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion had one of the best seasons in his career, with his coach Ivanisevic guiding him along the way. However, it was Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi who won the Coach of the Year award, as they led Jannik Sinner during the 2023 season.
Immediately after the award was announced, many fans were enraged by the fact that it wasn't Djokovic's coach who got the award. Their rage was later supported by Djokovic as he also hit out at the Atp in a social media post.
But was Ivanisevic really snubbed when it comes to the Coach of the Year award, or was it given in-line with the past seasons and former winners? Well, let's look at the history.

Gael Monfils enjoyed a fairly successful tennis career, which is slowly but surely coming to an end, yet he doesn't have many regrets.
The 37-year-old is still competing on the Atp Tour, and it's easy to say that he's still worthy of a spot among the best. Just recently, Monfils won the Stockholm Open, proving that he still has what it takes to beat the best.
At 37, there are only two more players ranked inside of the Top 100 older than Monfils. Those two are his compatriot Richard Gasquet and a three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka.
For Monfils, being able to play at this age is something that he probably never expected, especially given the physical impact of his demanding play style, which entertains fans. Speaking to The Independent recently, the French player said that this is the period of his career when he can just enjoy himself.

Elina Svitolina won the 2023 Wta Comeback Player of the Year award thanks to her jaw-dropping ascent into the world's Top 25 after an extended maternity break.

Most of those who closely followed the season probably know the story about Zverev. He missed a long time last year due to an ankle injury, which looked like a very bad injury but proved to be one that he could overcome.
He did think it certainly didn't happen overnight. The first few weeks on Tour were pretty challenging, but that was expected. It was only in March that Zverev won back-to-back matches, and by that time, he had a 3-6 win/loss record, which is far from the level you'd expect him to play at.

Sometimes, some people seem larger than in real life, and Novak Djokovic is there in tennis terms because he's winning most of his matches before stepping onto the court.
If you're a professional tennis player today, you really don't want to face Novak Djokovic on a tennis court. Not only is it going to be the most miserable 1-2 hours of your life, but it will also be pretty impossible to win. He's played 52 matches this year and lost only 5 of them, which is about what he loses per year.
It's been a few years since he lost more than 10 times, and if he does lose, it's generally against very good players. There is a limited amount of very good players, so there is a certain reputation there. You need to play amazingly to beat him, and very few players are able to find that level when standing opposite of him.

Alcaraz with 8,625 points is now 2,420 behind World No. 1 Novak Djokovic ahead of the Paris Masters this week. Djokovic will be playing for the first time in more than a month and remains the firm favorite to finish the season as the year-end No. 1 for a record-extending eighth time.
There is no movement in the world's Top 5, but Jannik Sinner was the biggest winner at the weekend. He defeated Daniil Medvedev for the second consecutive time in a final to win the Vienna Open . But the Russian will leave the Austrian capital as the winner of the Atp 500 Bonus prize money pool .

Gael Monfils hasn't written off participting at the 2024 Olympics yet though getting a spot on the French team wil be tricky.
Monfils isn't playing at the level he used to anymore because his level isn't in the Top 10 level, but it certainly was near his peak. His body is certainly not what it used to be either as he's missing more and more time due to various injuriies.
And yet, he's still capable of producing some impressive efforts. He won a trophy in Stockholm recently by putting together the best 4-5 days of this year. He also played well at other times during the year so it's not impossible for him to actually get a spot in the French Olympics Team.
The competition will be firece but playing one last time at the Olympics on home soil would certainly be special. He was asked about that at the Paris Masters...

After not playing for a while, Carlos Alcaraz will come back at the 2023 Paris Masters , and he's facing a tall order.
Carlos Alcaraz didn't play last week because he pulled out of the Swiss Indoors in Basel due to an injury , but he'll be back in Paris. The event hasn't been the best event for him as he suffered a terrible loss in 2021, while last year was even worse.
He suffered an abdominal injury that not only prevented him from playing at the Atp Finals but also at the Australian Open, which was a huge disaster for him. Hopefully, things go better for him this year, but some fans are concerned after the Basel withdrawal.
In any case, he's going to need some good tennis to go deep into the draw in Paris. The draw ceremony was held , and his path to the trophy is pretty complicated. A first-round Bye will come in handy,...

Jannik Sinner produced another solid effort to take down Frances Tiafoe at the 2023 Vienna Open in a pretty solid battle between the two players.
Tiafoe played a really solid match yesterday to take down Gael Monfils in two sets, but the French player was also injured, which kind of helped him. Even so, it was the best tennis he had played in a while, as his recent form has been all over the place.
Sinner himself has been in amazing form lately with plenty of great wins, including some that happened in Vienna . He's an excellent indoor player, so his doing well on this surface is hardly a surprise.
The match against Tiafoe wasn't complicated as he proved his favourite status with a competent 2-0 victory. Sinner served better and played better from the baseline, which is more than enough to really win a match indoors.
He totalled 11 winners compared...

The 2023 Paris Masters will run from October 30th to November 5th, 2023, and the draw for the last Atp Masters 1000 tournament of the year has been released.
The last Masters tournament of the season has been long awaited, and that's because of multiple reasons. One of them is that for the first time since the US Open, fans will get to see all of the Top 10 players in action .
Another reason is quite obvious, two of the best players in the world, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz , will meet in one draw once again, and many fans are hoping to see them battle it out in the final.
The two are fighting for the world no. 1 spot , and the 2023 Paris Masters may help significantly to decide that fight. The more experienced Serbian is the first seed in the French capital, and like all top eight seeds, he has the bye in the first round,...

Frances Tiafoe is playing some really solid tennis at the 2023 Vienna Open this week, but will it be enough to take down Jannik Sinner ?
It could be, but the American will need to keep up his good play and start to play even better. His win over Gael Monfils was good , but it showed a few problems in his game.
He had a few questionable choices in really crucial moments early when Monfils was still playing well. As the French player collapsed physically, Tiafoe did take control of the match but it didn't look as clean as it should have been.
His tennis has generally disappointed in recent weeks as opposed to Sinner, who has been amazing for a while now. The Italian certainly looked good in Vienna so far , but this will be his biggest challenge by far. He's had some good wins over Tiafoe in the past but...

Frances Tiafoe stopped Gael Monfils ' six-match win streak at the 2023 Vienna Open to reach the quarterfinals of the Atp 500 event.
The Frenchman seemed to be unstoppable, especially after winning title in Stockholm . On the other hand, Tiafoe seemed to be struggling a lot, losing five consecutive matches on the Atp Tour, when excluding an exhibition match at the Laver Cup.
In his first-round match in Vienna, the American was also down, 1-4 and 0-30, when his opponent, Daniel Evans was forced to retire due to an injury. If it wasn't for the Brit's injury, Tiafoe would likely exit the Vienna Open already in the first round, given how the match was progressing.
Yet, he made it to round number two, and he really used his chance. Both players, despite having terrific serves, faced plenty of break points in the opening set, but it wasn't until the eleventh game when...

Gael Monfils is playing really solid tennis right now, and he will try and keep that going against Frances Tiafoe at the 2023 Vienna Open .
Two years ago, Tiafoe had an incredible run at the Vienna Open, making his way to the final and amazing the crowd with trick shots. He didn't win the trophy because he couldn't overcome Alexander Zverev, but the American likes playing in the Austrian capital.
He didn't look that good in round one against Daniel Evans, trailing early in that match 4-1, but he did advance because Evans injured himself and was forced to retire from their first-round match.
That was quite lucky because, with the level he played, Tiafoe was in trouble. I'm not convinced he would have won that match had his opponent not gotten injured.

Gael Monfils has won many trophies in his career, as this one was the 12th he ever won , but it makes it undoubtedly the most special one for various reasons. It came at a time when there was a lot of doubt for the Frenchman, doubt about whether he really has what it takes to be among the best yet.
He's up there in age, and he's not getting any younger. It also marked 12 years since he last won the Stockholm Open, which he referenced on social media after winning the trophy.
And obviously, it's the first trophy he won since becoming a father, which he mentioned during the trophy ceremony.

Monfils is a veteran on the Atp Tour who won't win many trophies at this stage of his career, which makes this Stockholm Open triumph so special for him. It's not the first time he won a trophy in the Swedish capital, as he won it 12 years ago by beating Jarkko Nieminen in the final.

Novak Djokovic will begin his 396th week at the top of the men's rankings and kept his 2,240-point gap over closest rival Carlos Alcaraz .
The Serbian continues his break from tennis and will rejoin the tour at the start of the Paris Masters next week. Alcaraz's absence at this week's Swiss Indoors in Basel means that the deficit at the top will remain the same with just two more Atp tournaments to play between them .
Movement for the rest of the Top 10 is between Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz , who both suffered setbacks in qualifying for the Atp Finals. We saw some vintage Gael Monfils this week at the 2023 Stockholm Open , as he finished with the trophy by beating Pavel Kotov in the final.
Kotov is a really solid player, and he's had some amazing performances in recent weeks. It was pretty evident that the Russian found something this week in Stockholm as he bested some really strong opponents en route to the final, and what a final it was.
It's a bit sad for Kotov because, for a good portion of this match, he was really on top. He took the opening set behind his signature aggressive play, which sometimes left Monfils a bit stunned.
It's the same reaction many of his opponents had this week, but it was good enough to win the set. The second set almost went his way as he had three break points at 5-5 in the second set.

Gael Monfils is back to playing really strong tennis as he booked his first Atp final in 21 months at the 2023 Stockholm Open .
Monfils is a former champion in the Swedish capital, so seeing him playing well here is not a huge surprise . He's done it in the past, but what is surprising is the level he's produced all week long.

Monfils hasn't had much success in recent weeks but he hasn't played that much either. He was pretty okay during the North American US Open stretch playing some solid matches and winning a couple of good matches.
He took Toronto champion Jannik Sinner to three sets and that's quite a respectable result. This week in Stockholm has been amazing so far. He bested Marton Fucsovics in his first match, added a win over Filip Misolic and now bested longtime friend Adrian Mannarino as well.
The opening set was a very close one, as Mannarino broke first. He didn't hold the break long enough, allowing Monfils to battle back into the match, and eventually, Monfils outlasted his opponent to take the opening set 7-5. The second set started better for Monfils...

Gael Monfils is finding form at the 2023 Stockholm Open with a second consecutive win at the Atp 250 event, booking the quarter-final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has many tennis dreams, but one of his more recent ones is being world number one together with girlfriend Paula Badosa .
Neither Tsitsipas nor Badosa has ever come close to being world number one despite being ranked in the Top 5. However, it's something that the Greek believes can happen.
They are probably the most known tennis couple right now, overtaking Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina, and they seem very happy together. Despite recent rumours of a breakup , Tsitsipas and Badosa are going strong.
They appeared together in Antwerp as the Greek is playing at the 2023 European Open this year and looked happy. Tsitsipas confirmed that during the press conference, explaining that he has a big dream together with Badosa, and it's for both of them to become world number one.
You know, it takes years to mature as a man, or as a dominant athlete. And I give myself time for that.

Tennis fans braced themselves for a major spectacle at this year's Laver Cup , but Team World's dominant march to the title with three matches to spare left them massively disappointed.
Team Europe had won each of the first four editions of the Laver Cup, but there was a shift in power that began last year when Team World stunned the world to win their first Laver Cup championship against the team with a gaudy lineup including all members of the Big 3.
But the absence of key names in Team Europe's squad for this year's tournament proved telling. Roger Federer retired from professional tennis last autumn. Rafael Nadal is recovering from a serious hip injury, while Novak Djokovic's busy schedule rendered it impossible to feature.
The Big 3 weren't the only absentees. Team Europe couldn't count on the services of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, who were both recuperating from a physically brutal North American summer.

But the absence of key names in Team Europe's squad for this year's tournament proved telling. Roger Federer retired from professional tennis last autumn. Rafael Nadal is recovering from a serious hip injury, while Novak Djokovic's busy schedule rendered it impossible to feature.

It's all going Team World's way at the 2023 Laver Cup , as they now lead 10-2 against Team Europe after Day 2.
The first day of the 2023 Laver Cup in Vancouver was perfect for Team World, as they built a 4-0 lead. It included some controversy , but players seemingly forgot that by Day 2 , as another fight was on.
It all started with a match between Europe's Andrey Rublev and World's Taylor Fritz , and the American proved to be the better player in the match. Fritz won comfortably 6-2, 7-6(3), to increase the lead already to 6-0.
After that, Casper Ruud secured the first two points for Team Europe, when the Norwegian managed to bead Tommy Paul 7-6(6), 6-2, and decrease the team's deficit to only four points.
But Frances Tiafoe then showed that he thrives in a team environment, beating Europe's Hubert Hurkacz in two sets 7-5, 6-3, and increasing the World's lead once again,...

Nick Kyrgios liked to see the heated moment between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gael Monfils at the 2023 Laver Cup , which showcased the beautiful contrast in personalities.
The Laver Cup, tennis's answer to golf's Ryder Cup, is a stage where emotion, national pride, and individual qualities come together in a spectacle of spins, smashes, and sometimes, scorching exchanges.
On Day 1 of the 2023 Laver Cup, with Team World in the lead, the singles match between Team Europe's Gael Monfils and Team World's Felix Auger-Aliassime provided more than just a high-octane tennis display. It became a narrative of two contrasting styles and perspectives of the game .
Monfils, known for his theatrical flair and high-flying antics, had been seeking to lessen the burgeoning lead Team World had already established. A mercurial talent with an on-court persona that dances between a seasoned entertainer and a fierce competitor, Monfils was in his element. However, his opponent wasn't buying the show.

Gael Monfils clarified his stance after his heated match against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the 2023 Laver Cup .
The opening day of the Laver Cup already saw some drama on the tennis court in Vancouver, and it wasn't because of Team World's clean sweep, winning all four matches on the opening day. The drama happened during the match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gael Monfils .
The 37-year-old Frenchman, known as one of the best entertainers on the Atp Tour, was also trying to entertain the crowd in Vancouver, but his efforts were not met with a lot of understanding from his Canadian opponent.
Auger-Aliassime felt that the rules were not followed , as he thought that his opponent was taking too much time, and also, that he was not taking the event seriously enough. Monfils seems to completely disagree with that narrative, and he took to social media to share his point of view.

Felix Auger-Aliassime revealed that players are treating the Laver Cup with utmost seriousness in the wake of a heated on-court confrontation with Gael Monfils .
Auger-Aliassime won his singles match fair and square, 6-4, 6-3, driving Team World to a 3-0 lead in singles action before they extended that advantage further when Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul won their doubles match to complete a clean sweep on Friday.
But it was the tempestuous affair between Auger-Aliassime and Monfils that encapsulated proceedings on Day 1. The Canadian player protested to the umpire about Monfils' time-wasting antics between points, believing that Atp rules should apply.
Monfils overheard that part of the conversation and took offense to Auger-Aliassime's complaints. The Frenchman was candidly captured by TV cameras admitting that he was at the tournament 'to have fun' before crossing over to the other side of the bench where Auger-Aliassime and his Team World counterparts were stationed.

Roger Federer honored his promise of appearing in Vancouver at this year's Laver Cup in a non-playing role and held a special Q&a on Day 1 to mark one year since his official retirement.
Federer answered some interesting questions during the session chaired by former player Jim Courier on the court. And one of those questions came from his great tennis rival and friend Rafael Nadal who arrived virtually on the giant screen, and who amplified decibel levels of applause. The Spaniard is unable to partake in this year's tournament due to injury.
Nadal cheekily posed a question question to Federer to name his favorite doubles partner. The Swiss legend cracked a smile before he struggled to conceal his laughter. Federer mentioned that his wife Mirka was his favorite doubles partner. Federer once played alongside Mirka (who was his girlfriend) at the 2002 Hopman Cup.
But Federer changed his mind after...

The Laver Cup singles match between Gael Monfils and Felix Auger-Aliassime boiled down to a fiery on-court interaction between the two players.
Team World had taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the opening two singles matches when Monfils stepped on the court looking to reduce the arrears for Team Europe. Taking on Auger-Aliassime in his home country was no mean feat, even with the Canadian player's dismal 2023 campaign.
Auger-Alissime was certainly pumped for the occasion and was in business mode. He wasn't playing by the Frenchman's theatrics. An incessant Auger-Aliassime held for a 3-2 lead in the opening set when he complained to the umpire of Monfils' time-wasting stunts.
The Canadian felt that Monfils was taking too much time between points and could be heard telling the umpire to enforce the Atp rulebook and penalize his opponent at the changeover. That short dialogue spilled over to the other side of the court,...

The 2023 Stockholm Open promises to be a fabulous spectacle of indoor hard-court tennis and the tournament has committed its highest financial payday.
Running from October 16th to 22nd, this prestigious Atp 250 will bring together 28 singles players to Sweden's capital, Stockholm, preserving the heritage for one of the longest-running tennis tournaments on the Atp Tour.
Denmark's Holger Rune is the top seed and the reigning champion. No player has successfully defended the Stockholm Open crown since 2017, and Rune faces a massive challenge to reprise Juan Martin Del Potro's feat from six years ago.
Rune will likely need to take down second seed Tallon Griekspoor , one of the Atp Tour's biggest movers this season. British one-hander Daniel Evans won an Atp 500 event this year and is a player who thrives in an indoor setting and could be a danger.
The likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sebastian Baez have demonstrated their...

Running from October 16th to 22nd, the 2023 Stockholm Open will preserve its rich heritage among the oldest tennis tournaments on the Atp calendar.
This year's tournament marks its 54th edition, where 28 players will join the singles field vying to lift one of the most prestigious Atp 250s on the calendar, in addition to 250 rankings points that could be valuable for those players with a lot on the line this season - one of them being Holger Rune fighting for a spot at the Atp Finals .
The 20-year-old made quite the splash in last year's tournament . He ran the gauntlet, beating Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur, and Stefanos Tsitsipas to walk away with the title. It was in Stockholm when his late-season surge took off, and just a few weeks after that, he bagged his first Masters 1000 title in Paris.
Rune is the top seed in the entry list , but the formbook makes for grim reading.

The depleted Team Europe at the 2023 Laver Cup is losing more star power as Stefanos Tsitsipas is out of the event due to an injury.
Tsitsipas was the most experienced player in Team Europe at the 2023 Laver Cup, attending multiple events of the popular exhibition before. However, he will miss the competition this year due to an injury, which wasn't disclosed.
He was in action just recently in the 2023 Davis Cup, playing for Greece, but he didn't look that good , losing one singles and one doubles match, while winning only once in singles. It isn't very pleasant for Tsitsipas because the Laver Cup is one of his favourite tennis events by his own admission, so not being able to play is not great fun.
It's not good for Team Europe either, as they're severely lacking some star power. It will make the revenge for last year's defeat that much harder,...
