This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Chilean director Domingo Sotomayor is re-teaming with Sao Paulo-based Rt Features to make her third feature, “Niebla.”
CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and will represent sales rights. The cruise ship-set drama is currently in development and set to shoot in 2022.
Rt Features previously co-produced Sotomayor’s second feature, “Too Late to Die Young,” which saw her become the first woman to win a best director Leopard at Switzerland’s Locarno Festival.
Written by Sotomayor, “Niebla” reprises a scenario sketched in hugely different contexts in “Thursday Till Sunday” and “Too Late to Die Young” of characters on the brink of self-awareness at critical junctures in their lives.
Here, however, the protagonist is an adult, not the children of “Too Late to Die Young” nor the lovelorn adolescent of “Too Late,” and most seem in denial.

“I never stop coming up with theories about that case,” says the Arkansas cop played by Mahershala Ali in this trailer for HBO’s upcoming third season of True Detective. From the looks of this footage, he won’t be alone.
Playing out in three distinct time periods, the season promises to be a brain-teaser. Oscar-winner Ali (Moonlight) stars as Wayne Hays, an Arkansas state police detective who can’t stop thinking about the two children who went missing 30 years prior.
Costarring with Ali is Stephen Dorff as Hays’ partner on the case, along with Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, Michael Greyeyes, Jon Tenney, Deborah Ayorinde, Rhys Wakefield, Sarah Gadon, Emily Nelson, Brandon Flynn, Michael Graziadei, Josh Hopkins, Jodi Balfour and Mamie Gummer. Nic Pizzolatto is the sole writer of the third season with the exception of Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch.
Daniel Sackheim directs alongside Pizzolatto, who will make his directorial debut.

The first look of the third season of True Detective is giving off some major season one vibes with its haunting and enigamatic imagery.
In a trailer for the third installment of the anthology that played before the season finale of Sharp Objects, HBO seems like they are trading one unsettling story for another. Your guess is as good as mine as we try to decipher what is going on in this short, yet intriguing look at the series that ends with Ali saying: “I want to know the whole story.”
The trailer features the first looks at Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, and Mamie Gummer in action and we also see Academy Award-winning Ali float from scene to scene as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from northwest Arkansas, who is trying to put together the pieces of a mystery. For those fascinated to see what might come next for HBO’s landmark limited series, good news: “True Detective” Season 3 is officially happening.
The official logline is as follows: “The next installment of ‘True Detective’ tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”
Despite the mention of the Ozarks, we can’t promise a Jason Bateman cameo/crossover — however, we can confirm that Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will play the character of “Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.”
Similar to past seasons, Nic Pizzolatto will write all episodes, with the notable exception of Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch. Splitting directing duties are Pizzolatto and Jeremy Saulnier, who most recently directed the critically acclaimed film “Green Room.”
“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious...
