A female voiceover conveys the tricks of the trade in Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson’s high-stakes and sly spy thriller Rogue Agent (co-written with Michael Bronner who wrote the original unpublished article on the case) and shot by Larry Smith. We are informed that for an instant connection we should look into a stranger’s eyes exactly long enough to register their colour. Good spies hide in plain sight. Most effectively, they find out which story the other person is dying to be told.
Adam Patterson with Declan Lawn and Anne-Katrin Titze on James Norton’s specialty dish: “The bolognese came at the script stage and then it won well because James in real life is a great eater.

Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson’s Rogue Agent star James Norton with Anne-Katrin Titze: “We didn’t want it to feel like a predictable charm, the kind of suave spies in the James Bond vein.”
In Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson’s percipient Rogue Agent we first encounter James Norton (the tutor John Brooke in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Oliver Ashford in Amma Asante’s Belle) as Robert Freegard in the process of applying for a job as bartender in a rural English pub, located near a small agricultural college.

Shot by Larry Smith, the year is 1993, the Ira bombings flood the news and we learn that MI5 is recruiting freelance spies to inform on those suspected of plotting terrorist activities.

The Spy Who Loved My Money: Patterson & Lawn Get the Grifter in Seductive Drama
Scribes Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson present a smoothly administered expose of a con-man in their narrative directorial debut Rogue Agent. Detailing the exploits of a tenacious target whose perseverance took down the con-man who fleeced her (and countless others) by posing as an MI5 agent, both the script (co-written by The Mauritanian writer Michael Bronner) and a pair of lead performances from Gemma Arterton and James Norton, elevate this familiar recipe of emotional and economic predation.

James Norton is no stranger to playing less than salubrious characters thanks to his turns as psychopath Tommy Lee Royce in “Happy Valley” and a Russian mafia boss’s son in “McMafia.” In “Rogue Agent” he once again steps into the skin of a man whose moral compass is, to put it lightly, skewed. Based on a true story, “Rogue Agent” tells the almost unbelievable tale of Robert Freegard, a British car salesman who seduced at least seven women and exploited many more (including two men) in the 1990s by claiming he was an MI5 spy looking for new recruits.
As well as conning his victims out of more than a million pounds, Freegard also isolated them from their families, made them undertake bizarre “training missions,” such as sleeping in the street for days at a time, and persuaded them to go on the run with him, claiming they were being pursued by terrorists.

I’m surprised the studio gives up the game in its marketing materials; Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson’s Rogue Agent is built in such a way that allows the ruse to stand as truth until a midway-point revelation. It’s a case where not watching a trailer probably augmented my enjoyment of the piece—I genuinely didn’t know where things were going or who to believe. Was Robert Freegard (James Norton) really an MI5 agent who fell in love and thus must suffer the agency’s cruel vetting process of throwing dirt to see if his lover will remain loyal? Or was he a conman shrewdly covering his tracks to keep Alice Archer (Gemma Arterton) on her heels before stealing her money? It really could’ve gone either way.
Watch the trailer, though, and it’s a con from the start. Thus I wonder if the film’s...

One ballsy man’s spectacular real-life scam that endured in the UK for nearly a decade makes for pulse-quickening escapism in Rogue Agent. This is a story so far-fetched that you’d have trouble buying it in a film unless it really happened, and such is the case here in a yarn that intrigues from the very beginning and only momentarily towards the end loses a bit of its footing. Graced by strong and alluring performances by leads James Norton and Gemma Arterton, this most engrossing drama is an IFC Films release in the U.S., where it will also be available for streaming on AMC+, while Netflix will broadcast it on home turf.

Spy tales and romantic stories make for strange if complementary bedfellows. Both, after all, depend on a building of trust between individuals. A spy is only as good as how well they can quickly and efficiently connect with strangers, often creating a makeshift intimacy that’ll be nurtured in due time. The terms may be different during a romantic meet-cute but the comforting sense of being seen by someone you just met — not to mention the thrill of what they may bring out in you and how they may change your life — is not too dissimilar.
In Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn’s diligently crafted British caper “Rogue Agent,” the lines between a rakish spy and a dashing lover are blurred in the figure of Robert Freegard (James Norton), a real life individual who leveraged his alleged spy credentials toward less than savory ends.
“Rogue Agent” opens with some requisite historical context.

Because there are two screenplay categories at the Oscars — one for original scripts, and one for scripts adapted from other sources — they open the door for more films to be recognized and have often given us surprising and gratifying nominees that don’t show up in any other categories, including “Nightcrawler” (2014), “The Lobster” (2016), “20th Century Women” (2016), “The Big Sick” (2017), “Logan” (2017), and “Knives Out” (2019), to name a few in recent years. So before the Oscar nominations are announced on March 15, let’s consider some of the films that I think could land that lone screenplay nom.
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” — The comedy sequel by all means might not only be a writing nominee. Maria Bakalova remains a strong contender for her breakthrough performance as Borat’s daughter, and the film’s original song “Wuhan Flu” made the Oscars shortlist. But in case the outlandish satirical comedy is still too out-there for the academy in those categories,...

Around the world, the vast majority of people are strongly opposed to the continuing existence of the US detention facilities in Guantánamo Bay. In the US, however, polls have continually shown strong public support for it. This is probably what dissuaded Barack Obama from closing it down when he took office in 2009 and it may yet dissuade Joe Biden, who has expressed similar intentions. Despite that support, however, most US citizens now acknowledge that it practises torture. This is in significant part thanks to Mohamedou Ould Salahi, whose memoir, Guantánamo Diary, described his experiences during the 14 years that he spent there without trial. In The Mauritanian, Kevin Macdonald sets out to tell his story and that of the legal battle for his release.

When Kevin Macdonald set out to make “The Mauritanian,” the director must have found himself identifying to some degree with defense attorney Nancy Hollander. The lawyer, played here by Jodie Foster, braved insult and scorn when she took up the case of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was arrested in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. At the time (and likely to this day), many in the U.S. military believed Slahi to be involved in aiding and perhaps even recruiting the hijackers who flew the planes into the World Trade Center. He had confessed as much under torture — but then, who wouldn’t?
For Hollander, taking Slahi’s side was an extremely unpopular position, and one that Macdonald — a Scottish filmmaker who has been repeatedly drawn to hot-button political topics and controversial characters — embraces with a righteous fervor. No one can accuse Macdonald, who is not American, of being unpatriotic,...

Late to the Oscar race is drama “The Mauritanian,” which finally settled on the title director Kevin Macdonald always wanted for the BBC film he started shooting in December 2019 under the working title “Prisoner 760.” Based on Mohamedou Ould Salahi’s bestselling 2015 memoir “Guantanamo Diary,” STXfilms will release the movie February 19, just in time for the Oscars. That outcome was far from certain.
“We had no distributor in place,” said Macdonald on the phone from London. “We couldn’t get the music score correct, so we were not finished as soon as we should have been. And Covid complicated things. We filmed this labor of love for no money, so we always wanted an awards film. It was the only way we felt to get attention.”

Here’s how much Jodie Foster cares about preserving justice: In her new film “The Mauritanian,” Foster plays an attorney who decides to defend a man suspected of being “the head recruiter of 9/11” — or, as one general puts it, who “recruited the guys who flew your friend’s plane into the South tower.”
The man at the center of it all is Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), and he’s been languishing inside a prison cell at Guantanamo Bay without formal charges brought against him and with no expectation of a fair trial. But as Foster goes toe-to-toe with a military prosecutor played by Benedict Cumberbatch, they soon find out there’s a lot more at stake than just one man’s life.
“I’m not just defending him, I’m defending the rule of law,” Foster says in a conversation with Cumberbatch. He replies, “You haven’t seen what I’ve seen.

STXfilms has decided to enter this unconventional awards season with a mighty and timely drama, “The Mauritanian,” formerly called “Prisoner 760,” from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald. The film will be released on Feb. 19, 2021, and could echo the same late-breaking awards success that past movies like “Million Dollar Baby” were able to execute. With an impressive cast that includes Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch and Shailene Woodley, the inspiring true story could resonate with AMPAS voters, especially its large international membership.
“The Mauritanian” tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Rahim), who was held captive and tortured by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 10 years without a charge or trial. Losing faith, he finds hope in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Woodley), who face countless legal obstacles in their pursuit of justice.
