The average indie web series runs for single-digit episodes, but that is far too few for Smoke Break, a new offering from writer and director Kendal Sinn. Instead of playing out across a few long installments, Smoke Break will delve into its 40 characters' lives across 115 short vignettes, each one taking place in the alleyway behind a nondescript office building. Smoke Break's characters are all employees at Pennidyne, which sounds like it was spat out of an evil corporation name generator. Each episode ranges from two to five minutes and features a conversation between two to four characters, all of whom have stepped out for a quick smoke. The writing is sharp, but it's the round characters who make Smoke Break shine. There's Ryan, a disillusioned office slacker; Bill, a deceitful and sarcastic gentleman; Bobby, a passive, unassuming future husband; and many, many more. Though these characters only spend a few minutes on screen,...

Ever have one of those days where the universe just relentlessly takes one big steaming dump on you after another? From our character’s perspective, that’s Nailbiter in a nutshell.
Sure, all horror movies deliver characters in terrifying and evil scenarios, but Patrick Rea, director of 25 some odd shorts, and writer Kendal Sinn really just kick their spotlighted family every chance they’re down, starting simply with showing an alcoholic mother questioning the sobriety she’s been working towards for gosh knows how long. Such an insignificant detail once the tornadoes and horror kick in, but we watch as the low-blows keep snowballing into one gigantic rolling ball of despair.
In Nailbiter, Rea has crafted a tense and curiously inviting thriller in which the Maguire family are forced to take shelter in the basement of the nearest house when a tornado touches down in hot pursuit of their speeding car.

Nailbiter is only writer/director Patrick Rea’s second feature film, but he’s already an accomplished filmmaker, having directed somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 shorts. I’ve seen many of his short films and they are nothing short of amazing, with Nailbiter being no exception. This indie film admittedly has a limited budget, but you couldn’t tell that by watching the film. The movie is so slick and well-made; it would be very easy to mistake it for a big-budget Hollywood production.
As someone that lives in the Midwest, I know first-hand how utterly terrifying tornadoes can be. Rea combines the fear that a ravaging tornado brings with something much more sinister.

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by director Patrick Rea. Director: Patrick Rea. Writers: Patrick Rea, and Kendal Sinn. Cast: Joicie Appell, Emily Boresow and Jason Coffman Nailbiter is the latest indie film production to be developed by SenoReality Pictures. SenoReality is a production company created by director Patrick Rea and partner Ryan Jones. This film production company generally focuses on horror shorts with Nailbiter this company's second full feature. This film is this reviewer's first exposure to SenoReality's style of filmmaking and the wait has been worth it. Nailbiter is a production that, while indie, manages to develop a terrifying story. That story shows some influences from the later "Twilight Zone" (1985) television series, "Outer Limits" (1995) and perhaps even the more recent "X-Files" (1993). There is something bizarre and foreboding in that approaching tornado! And the Maguire family must seek shelter before it touches...

Part of the fun of Texas Frightmare Weekend comes from experiencing the new voices in independent cinema. Patrick Rea's movie Nailbiter serves as a great example of this. Before directing and co-writing his first feature, Rea has made a name for himself writing and directing award-winning short films, including Time's Up, Eve and Get Off My Porch. His writing and his meticulous work behind the camera put him ahead of his peers.
When writing Nailbiter, Rea and co-writer Kendal Sinn start by playing off our natural fear of Mother Nature. A family traveling through the Midwest becomes stranded in a random basement by a tornado. Immediately, we find that not all is well as a mysterious creature and a dark secret are attacking family members, one by one.
The camerawork shines above all else in this thriller. Rather than using the now-tired "dirty camera" to excess, the lens glides...

SenoReality Pictures and Ministry Machine are co-producing the upcoming indie horror feature Nailbiter. This film combines two terrors in one as a tornado bears down on a mother and her three kids. Their hiding space turns out to be a poor choice with something waiting below. Hopefully that something is not a backed up septic tank. As well, the poster does not give too many clues as to what that something is; however, this first graphic does warn viewers: "in the shadow of the storm it waits." And horror fans will not have to wait long for Nailbiter to release. 2011 is the expected launch date for this terror filled pic'.
As well, SenoReality Pictures is a film production and editing company based in Lawrence, Ks, which has recently completed the films Torture Porn, Next Caller and the award winning Woman's Intuition. Nailbiter continues the SenoReality strategy to create strong thrillers with interesting scenarios.

With regard to "Rhino", Rea and SenoReality Pictures will begin shooting the drama-thriller about drug dealers in a college town on April 21st. The short film stars Malcolm Goodwin of A&E’s new series “Breakout Kings” and Keith Loneker (Leatherheads, Lakeview Terrace). Principal photography will take place in Lawrence and Overland Park, Kansas.
As for Rea's anxiously awaited indie horror feature Nailbiter, he tells Dread Central that post-production is on track. The $200,000 budgeted film was shot in Lawrence, Kansas, and the Kansas City area and is hoping for its first screening in the late summer. Currently co-producer Ryan S. Jones is hard at work on sound design while composer Julian Bickford is scoring the film.

SenoReality Pictures and Ministry Machine present Nailbiter. Nailbiter is a short horror film directed and produced by experienced genre vet Patrick Rea and starring Erin McGrane, Meg Saricks, Emily Boresow and Sally Spurgeon. Nailbiter deals with a mother and her three daughters getting caught up in a tornado and taking shelter in a storm cellar....
They are trapped inside the cellar with nowhere else to go. They quickly discover that they are not alone. Could it be something supernatural? Could it be something more literal like a monster? Or is it a stark raving mad killer? We'll just have to wait and see what terrors unfold in Nailbiter. The film's screenplay is by Kendal Sinn. The production is currently deep into post production and will hopefully be completed early next year. Stay tuned for further developments on this project.

When most students finish film school, they immediately set their sights on moving to Hollywood to start making movies. For director Patrick Rea, as well as the entire group behind SenoReality Pictures, it wasn't a hard choice for them to take on the industry straight from the heart of the Midwest.

But being where we are allows us to feature some really great locations and do more with our budgets. I think we also have more of a presence by being here and not being swallowed up in Los Angeles."

We've been waiting with bated breath, and yes, bitten nails, for further news about Patrick Rea's second feature film, Nailbiter, and our patience paid off today when Rea sent over the flick's second teaser trailer. From the looks of things, a storm is coming indeed!
Rea also provided the following update: Editing on what we shot over the five weeks in the summer has begun. We're on [filming] hiatus now till the spring [with] only about 16 pages of script left to shoot. We are aiming to have the film completely finished by the fall 2010. Post-production is going to take some time. We suspect the main factors contributing to Nailbiter's long post process are the monster effects sequences we've been promised since first hearing above the project.

Shadow Falls Memorial is ready for its next round of screenings, and the picture is locked. Our working relationship with writer/director Kendal Sinn and his frequent collaborator Patrick Rea goes back several years, just about to 2001, which is when Sinn first started conceptualizing Shadow Falls, an Internet horror/sci-fi serial about eerie goings-on in a creepy Kansas town. His end goal was to have 36 short films and then finish with a feature. Instead of working on the shorts, however, Sinn jumped ahead to the finale, and thus, we have Shadow Falls Memorial.
Why the change in plans? His first season of short films about “Shadow Falls, Kansas” was a critical and popular hit when it debuted online in 2003, and Season Two was supposed to go up in 2006. But things didn't work out that way, and Sinn decided to end the series to focus on other films. He explains, "I got married [to producer Sally Cummings] and we had a baby, and [while] we were shooting all of these other films,...

Kansas City-based filmmaker Jeff Chitty gave Fango an exclusive look at a promotional trailer he recently shot for his road movie/horror film Devil’S Fork. You can see it below the cut.
The trailer is part of Chitty’s plan to raise financing for the movie, and showcases the cast who have already committed to star in the feature: Allen Lowman from Bonnie And Clyde Vs. Dracula, Fango Radio’s own Debbie Rochon, Bad Biology’s Tina Krause and newcomer Jared Cyr. Lowman and Rochon play a couple driving home from a wedding reception who encounter a strange hitchhiker named Autumn (Krause) and her companion, Preacher (Cyr), resulting in what Chitty calls “a true road trip from hell!”
Originally intended as a short to be included in an on-line series called Heartland Horrors, Devil’S Fork proved to be too graphic for the backers, and Chitty and his co-scripters...

Kansas-based filmmaker Patrick Rea sent along the exclusive pic seen below of a creature effect created by Allan Holt for his upcoming fright feature Nailbiter. The creator of numerous short horror movies (including Disturbances and A Man And His Finger, which appeared on the first Fangoria Blood Drive DVD) hopes to begin shooting this project in summer 2009.
“We’re still working on raising the money,” Rea tells Fango. “The film has had some false starts, and we made five shorts this year which equaled the length of a feature, so I didn't have much time to devote to pushing Nailbiter into production.” To help raise funds, Rea put together a teaser for the movie, which you can see at the official website of his SenoReality Pictures, along with a number of their minimovies.

It's been a year already since we first heard about Nail Biter, the next feature on indie filmmaker Patrick Rea's slate, and finally we have a taste of what's coming thanks to the teaser trailer that just showed up on SenoReality Pictures' website.
Rea previously described Nail Biter as "a horror film that combines classic monster movie elements set within the backdrop of unpredictable Kansas weather." He co-wrote the script with Kendal Sinn and will direct with support for the project being provided by local television company Free State Studios, a division of the privately held World Company, and Kansas City-based Take Two Entertainment.
They are still putting the final funding together, but this trailer shows Rea & Co. are off to a good start. Click the image below to see it for yourself!
