The 2nd edition of the Urban Lens film festival will screen over 35 non-fiction films from India, South Africa, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Canada, in an attempt to engage with how the ‘city’ has found a cinematic expression in non-fiction films over a period of time.
The festival will be held from September 26-28, 2014 at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (Iihs), Bangalore City campus. This year, the festival will also feature specially curated package of films from the Films Division archive, special screenings and a public talk. Entry to all films is free.
Each film that is part of this festival will explore different facets of what the city produces – whether political, social, economic or cultural. Deepa Dhanraj’s classic documentary film Kya Hua Is Shehar Ko looks at the communal riots of Hyderabad while Saba Dewan’s The Other Song chronicles the life of the singer Rasoolan Bai from...

★★★★☆ The recent DocHouse UK premiere of Dara Kell and Christopher Nizza's Dear Mandela (2011) heralded a surprisingly strong and impacting documentary that depicts the current climate of the first South African post-apartheid generation, who have found themselves suffering at the hands of the African National Congress. Known as the Abahlali, many of these these Shanty town inhabitants have started to rally together and stand up to South Africa's first democratically elected government.

Next week, the Sundance Film Festival will unveil the 100+ features titles for their 27th edition (with the short film announcements made usually get release the week after) and this can only mean one thing: this past week was the official nail-biting, living next to the phone type of deal for several first time filmmakers. Though Redford's festival is the holy grail of U.S indie festivals, my word of advice to those who've received a "nay" type answer...you'll have other great opportunities to premiere your film. Every year I'll find some great examples of American indie debut films and then rhetorically ask why this didn't play in Park City? and this will surely be the case for a good number of the 60 predictions we made over the previous weeks and that are mentioned below (click here to commence the countdown or click on the individual titles below for a...

#04. Dear Mandela - Dara Kell & Christopher Nizza Proving that there is a dark side to major international sporting events in host countries with atrocious human rights records, I think that this Ifp and Sundance supported feature-length documentary from filmmaker tandem Dara Kell (an editor on Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady's Jesus Camp and 2009 Sundance title, The Reckoning) and Christopher Nizza (an Emmy Award-winner) might find a welcoming slot in Sundance's Documentary Competition. Update: This much anticipated doc is still in post-production and I'm told hasn't been submitted to the festival. Dear Mandela shows South Africa as it hosts the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the government aims to ‘eradicate the slums’ by evicting families from their homes at gunpoint. Dear Mandela chronicles the rise of three young leaders from the chaos on the streets to the highest court in the land as a new generation puts Nelson Mandela’s promise of...
