Musician-turned-director Flying Lotus (Kuso) recently directed a segment in Bloody Disgusting’s V/H/S/99, and his next project is the sci-fi thriller Ash. Deadline reports today that Amazon Prime Video has shelled out a whole bunch of money to acquire international rights.
Deadline reports, “In the biggest acquisition to emerge so far at the nascent EFM, we understand Amazon Prime Video has sewn up a deal with XYZ for international rights.”
The deal is said to be a “high-seven figure pact, nearing $10M.”

Exclusive: In the biggest acquisition to emerge so far at the nascent EFM, we understand Amazon Prime Video has sewn up a deal with XYZ for international rights to Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) sci-fi thriller Ash, the sophomore feature from producer, rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Kuso).
We hear this is a high-seven figure pact, nearing $10M. Talks had been underway for a little while and the deal closed up this week.
Gonzalez will play a woman who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. She must decide whether she can trust the man (Paul) sent to rescue her. Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott also star. The movie is in post-production.
As we previously revealed, Flying Lotus is composing an original score for the movie, which is based on an original screenplay by Jonni Remmler.

Being an actor since she was a child, Jena Malone has been on her fair share of film sets. And what she’s learned is that working with first-time filmmakers is what she enjoys the most.
“I think, throughout my career, my number one favorite activity is working with first-time filmmakers that have a very unique vision,” Malone explained. “And [who] support innovation and clumsy emotion, and have just a unique perspective on humanity, you know?”
As his first feature film, Begert admitted at TheWrap’s Sundance Portrait and Interview Studio presented by Nfp that it started “just as a bit of a writing experiment,” and evolved from there into a short film and, eventually, into this feature. For Malone, working on this film was “amazing.”

Released through the Shudder streaming service last October, the horror anthology film V/H/S/99 quickly became the most-watched film in the history of Shudder. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for this year. But while we wait to see how V/H/S/85 is going to turn out, Rlje Films has given V/H/S/99 a Blu-ray, DVD, and steelbook release – and copies can be purchased at This Link.
The story segments that make up V/H/S/99 were directed by Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream). Here’s the synopsis: V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium. In V/H/S/99, a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to a series of horrifying revelations.
Josh Goldbloom produced V/H/S/99 for Cinepocalypse.

Levin’s opening segment in V/H/S/99 captures a ’90s MTV-style energy and aesthetic as it follows a group of pranksters with a Cky-like video series. The teens decide to break into an abandoned music venue for their latest mission for fame, and horror ensues.
In V/H/S/99, the follow-up to last year’s hugely successful V/H/S/94 – #HailRaatma – a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to horrifying revelations. Capturing the final days of analog as it heads into a new millennium, V/H/S/99 delivers a punk rock attitude and wild horror throughout its five segments.

Following his Oscar win with Summer of Soul, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and his Two One Five Entertainment have signed on for a new nonfiction project about late music producer J Dilla.
Dilla Time will document, according to the project’s description, “the brief life and pervasive and largely uncredited influence of music producer J Dilla.” Dilla worked with some of hip-hop’s biggest names throughout the ’90s and into the early ’00s, including Questlove, as well as Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Erykah Badu. Other collaborators include Ye, Dr. Dre and Pharrell Williams, and his influence can be heard in the newer generation of hip-hop like Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Thompson and Two One Five will reteam on the doc with Summer of Soul producer Joseph Patel, who will produce and co-direct with Darby Wheeler.

I love horror anthology movies ... at least in theory. I really love the idea of an anthology — a series of short films tied together in one neat package. But the truth is, there are more bad horror anthologies than good. Even the best of the best almost always have at least one segment worth skipping. The "V/H/S" franchise might be the worst offender — there are five films in the series so far, and I can count the number of good segments on one hand. The best of the best is, without question, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2," a brilliantly-conceived and genuinely scary story about a death cult. But nothing else in the series has ever come close to that tale.
In fact, I've found the series so miss-heavy that I kind of gave up on it. And then came "V/H/S/94," which ended up being my favorite in the entire franchise.

The odds are not good for “V/H/S” — which is to say it’s the even-numbered entries in this horror omnibus franchise that have been by far the best to date. As No. 5, “V/H/S/99” unfortunately maintains that pattern, providing an uninspired extension of the series that had rebounded after a seven-year lull with last fall’s “V/H/S/94.”
That installment was typically uneven, but the better segments were terrific. Here, nothing stands out: The best episodes are merely good enough, and the worst just tiresome. Nonetheless, this brand has proven viewer appeal for genre streaming platform Shudder, where it should do well when launched in various territories on Oct. 20. Set in 1999 — the tail of the titular format’s commercial reign, since DVDs were introduced two years prior — the film is unlikely to be the series’ last.
If this “V/H/S” has any binding theme, it would appear to be bullying. All...

"V/H/S/" has been a formidable mainstay in the horror genre ever since its first entry back in 2012. Since then, three sequels have been released, with last year's "V/H/S/ 94" being exclusive to the genre streaming service Shudder. Despite the longevity of the franchise, it has never strayed away from its core creative manta: hire up-and-coming horror directors to direct a found-footage short film, then present them as long-lost videos that connect to a larger story. This draw helped launch the careers of several now-prominent genre directors, such as Radio Silence ("V/H/S/"), Timo Tjahjanto ("V/H/S/ 2"), Justin Benson ("V/H/S/: Viral"), and Chloe Okuno ("V/H/S/ 94").
Now, the franchise is back, and it wants to party like it's 1999. That's because it technically is; "V/H/S/ 99" will take place at the turn of the new millennium amidst the decline of VHS recording and the omnipresent threat of Y2K. With...

“I couldn’t have hoped for a more appropriate opening night film than Weird: The Al Yankovic Story — a beautifully deranged biopic made in the great Midnight movie tradition of challenging conventions and forging one’s own path, no matter how weird,” Midnight Madness curator Peter Kuplowsky said in a statement Thursday.
The latest additions to the Toronto Film Festival also include the lineups for the Discovery and Wavelengths programs unveiled Thursday.
