The steaming chaos and viciously hurled epithets of such reality shows as “Top Chef” and “Kitchen Nightmares” thankfully have no place in “Kitchen Brigade,” which sees a gifted chef train eager amateurs with quiet hauteur, exacting shallot-slicing demands and, in time, a dose of kindness. The stakes are higher, too, in director Louis-Julien Petit’s amiable social dramedy: These young apprentices aren’t sharpening their skills merely to stay in a competition, but to stay in the country, threatened as they are with deportation if they can’t acquire relevant skills. The cruelties of the French immigration system lend a bitter back note to Petit’s otherwise upbeat heartwarmer — a mostly palatable affair that can’t wholly sidestep white-savior cliché in a rushed final course.
Petit’s previous three films — “Discount,” “Invisibles” and the Isabelle Adjani starrer “Carole Matthieu” — established his credentials as a maker of socially conscious entertainments, trading...

Paris — Far from a dumping ground, the months of January and February have become synonymous in France with the kinds of highly polished crowd-pleasing comedies that dominate the annual box-office.
This year is no exception, only nestled among the likely blockbusters “Serial Bad Weddings 2” and “City Hunter” is Louis-Julien Petit’s socially minded dramedy “Invisibles.” The story of a group of social workers fighting to keep a woman’s homeless shelter from closing, the film has opened to significant box-office numbers in these early weeks of year, and that’s no accident of timing.
Petit took inspiration from author-filmmaker Claire Lajeunie’s documentary and book about France’s invisible women and built a crowd-pleasing comedy around the subject. Produced by French shingle Elemiah and being sold by Charades, the film mixes well-known comedic stars like Audrey Lamy and Noémie Lvovsky with several non-professional actresses, a number of whom also appeared in the original doc.

"A beast, fulfill a woman like me?" Shout has premiered the official Us trailer for the upcoming release of Christophe Gans' version of Beauty and the Beast, which was released in most of Europe back in 2014, but is just now arriving in the Us. Disney is preparing its own live-action take on the classic story next year (see the first teaser trailer here), but this one is much more fantastical and gothic in its approach. French actress Léa Seydoux stars as Belle, and Vincent Cassel plays the Beast, in this very French take on the classic story. The cast includes André Dussollier, Eduardo Noriega, Myriam Charleins and Audrey Lamy. As much as I'm happy to see a new film by Christophe Gans, this looks filled with way too much CGI and excessively colorful imagery that makes me disinterested. Maybe it's better to wait for Disney's version. Here's the new...

The recent spate of fairy tale movies from around the world has been, at best, a halfhearted effort. On the heels of "Red Riding Hood," "Snow White and the Huntsman," "Mirror, Mirror," "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," "Jack the Giant Slayer," the upcoming "Maleficent" and the television series "Once Upon a Time" comes “Beauty and the Beast”, the new film by French director Christophe Gans ("The Brotherhood of the Wolf"), which follows suit. After being released in Gallic theaters in early February, the movie premiered last week at the Berlin Film Festival. By this point, most viewers know the story by heart, but Gans' version at least starts with a different take: a narrator reciting the tale of a widow merchant (Andre Dussollier), father of six, whose riches were jeopardized by a shipwreck that forced him to move to the countryside. While his jeering older daughters (Audrey Lamy, Sara Giraudeau...

Pauline at the Beach: Fitoussi’s Breezy Caper Good for a Laugh
Director Marc Fitoussi seems inclined toward breezy-haired, bauble headed gamines that get jostled around like seaweed in unpredictable waters. While his 2010 film Copacabana was a notable comedy starring Isabelle Huppert as the comic foil (rather than the ‘straight man’ for once), his latest reunites him with Sandrine Kiberlain, who starred in his 2007 debut, La Vie D’Artist. It’s quite easy to see why he’s attracted such talents as he seems to have a knack for an offbeat drollery with actresses that seem unconventional leads in a comedic vehicle. Inconsequential? Perhaps. But there’s an undeniable delight in watching his funny ladies as they cross in and out of slight frippery. While his features are hard to get a hold of in the Us, possibly because of their very slightness, his latest, like his others, is certainly...

Mélanie Laurent, known up to now as that-girl-from-Inglourious Basterds, makes her directorial debut with The Adopted (Les Adoptés), a story of the ties that bind us in life and love. While it might not be breaking any moulds any time soon, The Adopted is a generally promising if occasionally flawed feature-length debut from first-time director Laurent, with a strong visual imprint and some top performances.
Reserved wallflower and lover of English literature Marine (Marie Denarnaud) has been inseparable from her adoptive family – alcoholic matriarch Millie (Clementine Célarié), frustrated musician Lisa (Laurent) and unreasonably cute son Léo (Théodore Maquet-Fouchet) – since her own parents died when she was young. But this tight family unit is shaken up when Marine meets charming bachelor Alex (Denis Ménochet) and a tentative relationship blossoms between the two. Jealousy and thoughtlessness begin to take their toll as the family struggle to adapt to the new status quo.

Three U.S. films are among the seven nominees for best foreign film in this year’s César Awards, France’s version of the Oscars. Meanwhile, American director Quentin Tarantino has been selected to receive an honorary award and will be at the Feb. 25 ceremony in Paris to accept it, it was announced Friday.
The three American films cited by the Académie des arts et techniques du cinema are Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus,” an Oscar contender in the States last year.
Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods and Men” (“Des hommes et des Dieux”) — not one of the nine films still in contention for the best foreign film Oscar — leads with 10 nominations, while Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” and Joann Sfar’s “Gainsbourg” (“Vie Héroïque”) are also nominated in multiple categories.
Presiding over this year’s awards is American actress and director Jodie Foster.
