Cults and their leaders have always equally repulsed, fascinated, and terrified me. The repulsion and terror are obvious markers for any sane person, but some would rather not have it in their lives at all, thank you very much. This is also a lucid and healthy response. But in horror we look for the cathartic in the carnal; and while Bad Dreams (1988) spends a great deal of effort mining a very similar vein as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), it succeeds in carving out its own modest slice in the late ‘80s landscape.
Released stateside in April by Twentieth Century Fox, Bad Dreams made back its $4 million dollar budget opening weekend, but petered out after it pulled in just over $9 million total. A profit, yes, but not the big numbers they were hoping for based on what they thought was a foolproof Elm Street format. Oh, and...

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed if you haven't watched the season finale of American Horror Story: Cult.
Evan Peters is opening up about his "most difficult" season of American Horror Story yet.
During an exclusive interview with Et on Tuesday, the 30-year-old actor revealed what it was like taking on the lead role of Kai Anderson in Ahs: Cult and how he felt about that shocking season finale.
Over the course of seven seasons, Peters has been cast in a number of villainous roles, like Tate Langdon in Murder House, Jimmy Darling in Freak Show and James March in Hotel. But none have come close to Kai, whom Peters says was probably his favorite character he's portrayed in FX's anthology series thus far.

Last week American Horror Story: Cult managed to become a parody of itself, and became more the American Comedy Story. This week something needed to change, to get it back on track. Thankfully, with the season heading towards the end game, things began moving in the right direction…sort of.
In an act of faith Kai (Evan Peters) decides that his follower should ascend to the next level, and channels some Jim Jones style kool-aid. Ally (Sarah Paulson) puts her plan of revenge in action, and makes moves to protect her son Oz (Cooper Dodson) from danger.
This is the point where there is no getting away from it, Kai is just a boy living his little dream of being a leader. Marching along with his little gang of bros. he constantly puts tests in front of both them and the females of his cult to make sure that they are following his rules.

After four seasons in front of the camera as one of the recurring stars of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story, Angela Bassett has returned to the series -- only this time as director of the ninth episode (“Drink the Kool-Aid”) of Cult. And the actress tells Et that she was honored to helm her second episode of the anthology series, but happy that she had no idea it would be the coveted Halloween episode. “I wasn’t intimidated until last week,” says Bassett, who was pleased with her second opportunity to go behind the camera, adding that the success of the episode all started with the script. “It’s a script you can go buck wild with. I feel fortunate that I got a great script.”

American Horror Story has crafted one of the show's most compelling characters in the form of Kai Anderson. It's a masterful performance by Evan Peters, as unhinged as anything he's done on screen, but with a kind of charm that makes the performance all the more effective. It seems that every season has a character that stands out; we've had the Jessica Lange season, the Sarah Paulson season, the Lily Rabe season, the Denis O'Hare season, and now we're having the Evan Peters season.

This season of American Horror Story sheds light on multiple infamous cult leaders, including Charles Manson, artist Andy Warhol, and Jim Jones, the founder of The People's Temple - one of the most intense and abominable cults out there. Founded in 1955 by the ordained pastor, it was initially used to spread messages of social change and racial equality - sounds sweet, right? During the '60s and '70s, People's Temple had nearly 5,000 members and the support of loads of liberal political figures, including Harvey Milk, California Governor Jerry Brown, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, and even First Lady Rosalynn Carter. In 1974, things took a turn in a way that not many people saw coming (but they probably should have). Related7 Infamous Cults That Are Creepy as F*ck The group moved to a property in Guyana, where they developed a community called Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, also known as "Jonestown.

Jared Leto prepared to play a blind character in the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 by spending his entire time on and off set during the shoot trying to navigate the world without sight.
The actor, 45, told The WSJ. Magazine he “stayed really focused” throughout the shoot.
That’s putting it mildly. The magazine reports that the Oscar winner wore customized contact lenses that made his eyes totally opaque. He was then guided around set the entire time and never saw his costars — not even before or after takes.
“We all heard stories about Jared, how he transforms into the characters.

We knew it wouldn’t take long for episodic television and cinema to begin to reflect the seismic events of American politics that have been reverberating around the globe since the Presidential election in November 2016. Thankfully, one of the first to respond was Ryan Murphy and his American Horror Story team – lining up the seventh season of the highly acclaimed FX series with a focus on the cult of personality.
But aside from theme, the scrutiny surrounding Murphy’s anthology show always centres on the cast, and the characters they’ll play. Thus far, the show’s creator has played his cards very close to his chest, but with the new season set to premiere on September 5th, and rumours and speculation reaching fever pitch, Murphy has provided some clarification during a Q&A session at Fox studios with FX CEO John Landgraf.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series."Finally," says the One-Armed Man a.k.a. Phillip Gerard (Al Strobel) about midway through Part 16 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival, right after a certain FBI Special Agent returns to the world of the living. It's been 13 episodes since we've seen full trace of Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), though even then he wasn't entirely himself. (Being trapped for 25 years in the otherworldly Black Lodge has a way of tempering certain personality traits.) Now, however, he's "one hundred percent" (in his estimation, anyway), and there's certainly plenty of giddy pleasure to be had watching the energetic, Boy Scout-like Cooper of old take charge. But that presumes that this is the Dale Cooper of old, and it quickly becomes apparent that that's not the case.

Ryan Murphy is ready for if – or when – Donald Trump posts a tweet about “American Horror Story: Cult.” Murphy told reporters Friday that he would hope that the president “would have more important things to do.”
But the producer also said he’s realistic: “I would be so shocked if he did, and yet not… My response would be I’m not going to respond to that, because the work speaks for itself. I’m prepared to say nothing.”
Murphy said he expects audiences to have an “emotional response” to “Cult,” especially given that the season kicks off on Election Night 2016. And he knows some right wing critics will dismiss “Cult” because of his politics.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Looking back on the Jonestown massacre today, the horror is almost unfathomable.
On Nov. 18, 1978, Jim Jones orchestrated the mass suicide of 918 members of his cult in a remote commune in Guyana, South America. The men, women and children — members of The People’s Temple — killed themselves by drinking a cyanide solution laced with Flavor Aid, an inexpensive knock-off of Kool-Aid.
It was the single greatest loss of American life in a non-natural disaster until 9/11.
Nearly 40 years later, many people have forgotten the horror — but many people who were close to the cult are speaking out on the Reelz Channel’s docuseries,...

Jeff Guinn doesn’t like the expression “drinking the Kool-Aid.”
First, he says, it’s inaccurate: Most of the 918 people who died in the 1977 Jonestown massacre in a remote commune in Guyana, in South America, actually killed themselves by drinking a cyanide solution laced with Flavor Aid, an inexpensive knock-off.
More troubling to Guinn is the glib judgment implied in that expression — and how it has too simply come to represent the willingness of fools to follow deranged leaders.
As Guinn found out while researching and writing The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, released in bookstores on Tuesday,...

It all started with an innocent picture taken of Meryl Streep cheering on Debbie Reynolds at the 2015 SAG Awards. Little did Streep know, that photo would resurface two years later and be turned into a meme of her yelling the lyrics to your favorite songs. Here she is singing the notorious “Mulan” song. Here she is stealing Whitney Houston’s spotlight. Here she is singing-a-long to the Spongebob Squarepants theme song. Here she is unleashing her inner Rihanna. Here she is singing the most well known verse to Jim Jones’ “We Fly High.” Here she is giving Drake a run for his money.

The Walking Dead has never been shy about showing its influences. The whole point of the show is that it's a George Romero movie that never ends. Negan and the Saviors operate a bit like the Mongol horde did in the glory days of the Golden Horde, riding the open roads in vehicles, taking what they need, and giving communities the choice to either submit or die beneath their superior numbers and firepower—and an adept ability at breaching walls, for that matter.

In the trailer for The Bad Batch, we see Keanu Reeves playing a mustachioed cult leader with a band of machine gun-toting young women, and a shirtless Jason Momoa wandering the desert in white pants and a cleaver holster, but this isn’t just some weird music video. It’s Ana Lily Amirpour’s follow-up to her debut film, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. The A.V. Club previewed The Bad Batch at Fantastic Fest last year, where we learned that what it has in star power, it lacks in cohesive story. In addition to Reeves and Momoa’s Jim Jones- and sensitive cannibal-types (respectively), The Bad Batch also stars newcomer Suki Waterhouse as a young woman finding her way in the lawless land that’s only Texas-adjacent, and Jim Carrey as a sun-ravaged traveler. And that’s Sneaky Pete himself, Giovanni Ribisi, popping up for good...

Mads Mikkelsen has made a career out of taking monsters—Bond villains, refined cannibals, bizarro chicken men—and presenting them sympathetically. So it’s not surprising that the actor asserted that his Doctor Strange character, Kaecilius, is less a villain, and more a man who opposes the hero’s point of view, at a recent press conference for the movie, which hits theaters on November 4.
“I always think of all characters as a hero,” Mikkelsen told Screen Rant, adding that he sees Kaecilius—who wants to open our world to other, potentially hostile dimensions— as a true believer in his ideals. “We tried to make him a man who knows what he’s talking about, a little bit like a demigod, Jonestown, or whatever it’s called, somebody who believes, utterly in what he says,” Mikkelsen said. (Note to Mads Mikkelsen: Most people do not see Jim Jones as...
