Color grading system developer FilmLight announced the nominees for its Color Awards, which recognize the work of colorists on movies, TV and short-form content.
In their third year, the competition attracted roughly 400 entries. Winners, which will be selected by a jury led by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker), will be announced Nov. 12 at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography film festival.
“The diversity of talent and work is, as expected, very high. Our jury meetings so far, with talented cinematographers, colorists and filmmakers, have illuminated how fundamental the colorists’ work is in the filmmaking process and it’s been a complex job to determine the nominees. Everyone that has made it through these early rounds has, in our eyes, already won.”

Barbie leads the feature competition of the annual Hpa Awards, whose nominations in features, TV, documentaries, commercials and restoration were announced Tuesday.
The postproduction community nominated Greta Gerwig’s hit film for outstanding color grading, editing and sound. Close behind with two nominations apiece in the feature categories are Oppenheimer (color grading and editing), Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (sound and visual effects), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (color grading and editing), Tár (color grading and editing) and Avatar: The Way of Water, for which teams at Weta FX and Industrial Light & Magic were both nominated in the VFX category.

Not having NBA permission to use basketball archival footage turned out to be a blessing in the making of Adam McKay’s HBO series, “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” (releasing new episodes on Sundays). It compelled McKay (who directed Episode 1), co-cinematographers Todd Banhazl (“Hustlers”) and Mihai Malaimare Jr. (“The Harder They Fall”), and Oscar-nominated editor Hank Corwin (“Don’t Look Up”) to get creative in evoking the ’80s as a cultural snapshot filtered through the game-changing Los Angeles Lakers dynasty, led by charismatic phenom Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah). The drama is a surreal and often absurd variation on McKay’s “Succession,” with the Lakers’ glitzy, entertaining Showtime persona masking a dysfunctional family run by outlier owner Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly).
