Microsoft will finally pull back the curtain on its upcoming Project Scorpio, the upgraded Xbox One console first announced at last year’s E3, this week. Whispers have been circulating for a while suggesting that the software giant had been planning such an event, although official confirmation comes today by way of Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry. The tweet, which you can see below, confirms that the site will have an “exclusive Xbox Scorpio reveal” on Eurogamer this Thursday, April 6 at 6 am Pst/9 am Est/2 pm BST.

Though the unveiling of the Xbox One S took priority for Microsoft at E3, the hardware giant also confirmed the existence of a new, embryonic system known as Project Scorpio. Touting six teraflops of computing power, the yet-to-be-revealed console is a marked leap forward from the Xbox One, opening up the ability to render games in native 4K resolution, be compatible with Vr/Ar devices, and more.
That’s a point of contention that has gained a lot of traction online, particularly now in the aftermath of Sony’s somewhat mooted unveiling of its own mid-gen hardware refresh, the PS4 Pro. Spec sheets reveal that Scorpio is, on paper at least, more powerful that Sony’s Pro Sku, with Xbox director Albert Penello even going so far as to say the technical disparity between both systems will be “obvious.”

Microsoft’s decision to open up its catalog of first-party titles for PC with the Xbox Play Anywhere program doesn’t necessarily detract from the console gaming experience.
First showcased during E3 in June, the incentive offers players a cross-buy service across both Windows 10 and Xbox One, meaning you only need to buy one copy of a first-party game such as Gears of War 4 – select third-party titles are also valid – to access it across the two platforms.
It’s all part of Microsoft’s unification strategy, and while appearing on the Inner Circle Podcast (per GameSpot), Executive Albert Penello offered some fresh perspective on the Xbox Play Anywhere program and why it doesn’t spell the death of Microsoft’s console business.

Social functionality has been one of the key selling points of the next generation of consoles: Sony and Microsoft have spent a great deal of time touting how gamers will be able to share their experiences with other gamers through streaming and clips. Well the Xbox One vision for social gaming may held up just a little bit as Microsoft explains that clip sharing will only be available via Xbox Live at launch with other social networks to follow next year, according to a piece in Destructoid.
In Destructoid's look at the revamped Ui for the Xbox One, Destructoid spoke with Microsoft senior director of product planning and management Albert Penello, who said that sharing to sites like YouTube and Facebook wouldn't be available until sometime in 2014.

Those who plan on owning both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, yet have no idea how they'll fit amongst existing hardware (virtually everything connects via Hdmi these days, yet most displays only sport a small handful of ports), were all excited by a revelation made during Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show presentation.
Ms stated that the Xbox One's Hdmi pass-through would support pretty much any kind of device that sends out a video/audio feed via Hdmi. Including the PS4.
According to GameSpot, Albert Penello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, noted the One's ability to snap applications to the side of the screen while playing Xbox One games. Yes, even PS4 games:
"Any application can be snapped to a game…this could be the live TV feed, so if you wanted to be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, you could snap that."

One major point of contention cited among those who are on the fence about Xbox One ownership is the lack of backwards compatibility.
While it true that the PS4 has the same issue, Sony has proposed a method to allow to enjoy older games via streams (though admittedly, these plans have yet to be detailed the least bit).
Though as it turns out, Microsoft says it might be possible on their upcoming machine as well, and via the same means as well by the sounds of it.
As Joystiq points out, when speaking with Gamespot, Microsoft Senior Director Albert Penello notes that backwards compatibility may eventually happen thanks to their Azure cloud service:
"That's one of the things that makes [the cloud] at the same time both totally interesting and hard to describe to people. Because what the cloud can do is sort of hard to pin… Using our Azure cloud servers,...

While on paper Sony's Playstation 4 next-gen video game console has seemingly more obvious hardware power than Microsoft's upcoming rival console Xbox One, how much that potential power difference has on actual gaming isn't really known at this time to the public.
The only group who have had some experience with the two machines so far are game developers themselves, and now one of them - former People Can Fly creative director Adrian Chmielarz - set off a social media firestorm over the weekend when he tweeted:
"I know that pure hardware specs are not the whole story, but man, all next-gen Aaa devs I talk to say it's 50% speed difference... It's PS4 that is more powerful."
He didn't stop there though, clarifying his comments in a statement to NeoGAF. Here's an abbreviated version:
"First, yes, devs I know — and as someone has shown it before in this thread, some other...

One of the more disappointing aspects to the upcoming next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony is that current generation games — both physical and digital — are not compatible with the new hardware. Sony has already confirmed their plans to launch a backwards compatibility solution for the PS4 next year with their Gaikai streaming service, and now it looks the Xbox One might one day do something similar via the power of “the cloud.”
Speaking to Gamespot this past week, Microsoft Senior Director Albert Penello mentioned that Xbox One backwards compatibility is theoretically possible using the Azure cloud service, and it could be something that the company looks at in the future.
“That’s one of the things that makes [the cloud] at the same time both totally interesting and hard to describe to people. Because what the cloud can do is sort of hard to pin. When you say to the customer, we...

A few new smidgens of Xbox One-related news have surfaced, and we round them up here...
Microsoft's Xbox One is the subject of a lot of updates at the moment, so we thought we'd take a look at some of the more interesting snippets of info that have emerged recently.
First up is the emergence of a Forza 5 bundle. Some retailers, including Game, started to offer an alternative Day One Edition bundle for those who aren't particularly taken by football. Microsoft's premier driving sim was instead served up as a free accompanying game for the special edition, which then duly sold out in no time at all in some outlets. At the time of writing, Woolworths.co.uk still had stock left. So, if you'd prefer some rubber-burning action free with your Day One Edition, you may want to go check it out.

In the ongoing social media war over who has the better next generation console, one of the often referred to pieces of future tech that was seen as a big advantage in Microsoft's corner was 'Illumiroom'.
The experimental technology essentially turns a living room into a gaming display by projecting the screen onto the walls surrounding a TV where your game is playing.
Now though, Xbox One's head of product planning Albert Penello says he doesn't expect you'll see the device in homes due to the expense. He tells AusGamers:
"I wouldn’t expect you’ll see that. It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things. It’s really super-neat if you’re in the lab and you’ve got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but... we looked at it, but for an average customer it’s,...

In yet another major pre-launch policy change, Microsoft has decided to let people turn off their Kinect 2.0 while playing games on the Xbox One.
According to Chief Xbox One Platform Architect Marc Whitten, there will be an option to switch the Kinect off through a settings menu. It will still be able to communicate with the Xbox One controller’s infrared sensor, but will no longer respond to aural or visual cues.
The strict always-on policy for the Kinect 2.0 is only the latest in a series of originally stated Xbox One policies to fall under the weight of consumer backlash. News of major corporations stockpiling information (Skype logs, emails, text message, etc.) for the Nsa has left people more concerned than usual about their privacy. Coupled with the now-defunct online policy, this exacerbated these concerns.
Hysteria ensued when the Kinect announcement was first made, with some even going so far...

Microsoft will begin an open beta for the new Xbox 360 dashboard next month. In an interview with Gamasutra, Microsoft's Albert Penello outlined what users can expect from the new Xbox 360 dashboard when it enters the open beta, describing it as "probably as big, if not bigger, in terms of what [the company] did around Nxe in terms of a significant change to the Ui". "The definition of a games console is changing over time. What people expect and want is changing," Panello said. "This update gets us into a place where we can expand more rapidly without breaking the experience for people who are primarily there to play games." The new dashboard layout displays a number of channels which can be flicked through using (more)...

Microsoft has said that the slim Xbox 360 will help put its hardware record behind it. Senior director of global marketing Albert Penello was asked about the removal of the 'Red Ring of Death' on the latest system, which signalled hardware failures on previous consoles. "Well, you know it's unfortunate and, believe me, it’s my least favorite thing to talk about, part of our history. I think most people agree it’s become a little bit of an Internet meme now, just a thing to say," he told IndustryGamers. "I feel bad for the customers that have had to go through the experiences that they've had, but, fundamentally, almost everybody will tell you that consoles purchased in the last two or three years, that problem doesn’t occur. It's really people that had launch consoles and some of the early hiccups in getting those repaired (more)...
