He was first a journalist at the "Egyptian Gazette". In 1951, he went into exile and lost his Egyptian nationality. He became a Frenchman. After working for AFP, he became a specialist of the Middle East for "Le Monde". He interviewed many chiefs of state and politicians including Gamal Abdel Nasser and Moshe Dayan.
