NBC viewers were already seeing a lot of Maria Taylor on Sundays. Now they can be assured of seeing even more.
Taylor, the up-and-coming sportscaster who left ESPN last year for NBC Sports, was named host of “Football Night in America,” the show that precedes “Sunday Night Football” and garners one of the network’s biggest weekly audiences. She becomes the series’ first full-time female host, and becomes the latest in an impressive series of sports announcers to fill the role, including Bob Costas and Dan Patrick.
Taylor picks up lead duties on “Football Night” after Mike Tirico was named to provide play by play on “SNF” following a decision by Al Michaels to jump to Amazon to call “Thursday Night Football.” Last year’s “Football Night” crew included Tirico and Taylor along with Tony Dungy, Drew Brees, Chris Simms and Mike Florio, with Jac Collinsworth and Rodney Harrison holding forth from the game site.

Peyton and Eli Manning have more yards to gain for Walt Disney Co. and ESPN.
The two football brothers, whose “ManningCast” alongside ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” has gained significant notice this season, have extended their relationship with the sports-media giant. Under a new deal, the brothers will add a fourth year of their “Monday Night Football With Peyton and Eli,” so that it extends through the NFL’s 2024 season. The agreement, struck with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, also calls for the creation of similar programs alongside UFC matches, college football and golf, using other hosts and produced by Omaha in collaboration with ESPN.
“I’ve always loved talking football with my brother, and it was even more fun to do it while watching ESPN’s ‘Monday Night Football.,” said Peyton Manning. “Eli and I are excited to sign on for another season, and the entire Omaha team is...

Al Michaels, the giant of sports broadcasting who is nearing the end of his contract with NBC for Sunday Night Football, seems increasingly likely to be the first marquee booth hire at Amazon.
The play-by-play man all but confirmed the shift during a podcast interview with Sports Illustrated, which was posted this morning. Several other media reports in 2021, including several by the New York Post, have indicated the likelihood of Michaels landing at Amazon. The tech company shelled out billions for exclusive NFL rights starting next season and is ramping up an entire broadcast operation. It has streamed games for years, but using feeds handled by established linear networks rather than mounting full-fledged, original productions.
Asked directly about his potential new work address, Michaels did not throw any cold water on the idea that it would be at Amazon. He called streaming “the new frontier” and said the NFL has...

Tom Brady’s record-setting moment on the gridiron delivered big ratings for NBC during Week 4’s “Sunday Night Football” game last night. Viewership of the match-up between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium scored a 6.0 in the key, ages 18-49 demographic and garnered about 22 million eyes in the non-adjusted fast affiliate Live+Same Day numbers from Nielsen. Once time-zone adjusted digits roll in— likely later this afternoon —we could see a significant increase in total viewership.
Brady, quarterback for the Bucs and former Patriots star, added another impressive NFL stat to his resume as he set a league NFL career passing record during the game. He only needed 68 yards to surpass the previous record of 80,358 passing yards set in 2018 by New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees, according to ESPN.

After hosting “Jeopardy!” during a turbulent offseason with the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers was hoping to begin a championship season on Sunday. Instead, he and the Packers got blown out 38-3 by the New Orleans Saints — and the “Jeopardy!” jokes began to flow on Twitter.
“I can’t believe I drafted a Jeopardy host for my fantasy team,” read one tweet, while another joked that the NFL quarterback has passed Alex Trebek for the most interceptions thrown by a host of the venerable game show.

The Fighting Irish football faithful will have to pay up to watch Notre Dame’s home opener against Toledo next month. NBC, which has broadcast every Notre Dame home football game since 1991, will sit out the Sept. 11 matchup in favor of NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.
The game will be available on Peacock’s premium tier, though NBC is going to give out a small discount ahead of time. This will be the only Notre Dame game that Peacock will have exclusively; the rest of the Fighting Irish’s home schedule, including the annual matchup against USC, will be available on both Peacock and NBC.
Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees will make his debut in the broadcast booth alongside Mike Tirico.

Kicking off its upfront day with an action-movie parody featuring Aidy Bryant, Kenan Thompson, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and others rushing to make it to the (ultimately virtual) event, NBCUniversal showcased its wares for the upcoming TV year by spotlighting streaming service Peacock to a nation emerging from the past pandemic-ridden year.
The event got underway hours after the mega merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia was formally unveiled to Wall Street, sending shockwaves through the industry.
“Our No. 1 goal is to bring the our audiences the best shows,” said NBCU TV and streaming content chief Susan Rovner in a sit-down with Hoda Kotb on the “Today” set. That pseudo-interview setup threaded through the company’s entire presentation: Kotb interviewed Rovner, then Kelly Clarkson interviewed Renee Zellweger and Nicole Byer about drama “The Thing About Pam” and comedy “Grand Crew,” respectively, from the set of her own talker. The video starred Baylen, 12, Bowen, 10, Callen, 8, and Rylen, 6, sitting on the couch as they each recited their lines. Wearing their dad's No. 9 Saints jerseys, his three sons took turns saying, "After 15 years on the Saints and 20 years in the NFL..." "Our dad..." "is finally going to...

Sunday’s Super Bowl battle between the Kansas City Chiefs’ hot-shot Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, the NFL’s winningest quarterback of all time, highlights the wave of young QBs who are bringing sizzle to the gridiron and grabbing the attention of Madison Avenue and Hollywood.

That has set up a generational test of wills between the Chiefs star and Brady, who is going for his seventh Super Bowl ring and his first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just before kickoff in the New Orleans Saints’ divisional playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccanneers last week, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Saints quarterback Drew Brees would retire after the season. The news forced an adjustment by the Fox team broadcasting the game. Speculation about Brees’ future had circulated all season long. But the new apparent certainty about that future would need to be addressed should the Saints lose, ending their season and Brees’ career. Once New Orleans fell behind by 10 points in the latter part of the fourth quarter, lead announcers Troy Aikman and Joe Buck turned their attention to Brees’ legacy.

Brady also spent some time with the 42-year-old's four kids—sons Baylen, 12; Bowen, 10; and Callen, 8 and daughter Rylen, 6—and even threw a touchdown pass to one of the boys. "We could have used you tonight," he quipped in a video posted by NFL Network correspondent James Palmer. After sharing a few brief words with his fellow sports star,...

Fox dominated Sunday ratings with the Nfc Divisional Playoff game between Tampa Bay and New Orleans, which earned an 8.0 in the adults 18-49 demographic while a staggering 28.8 million viewers tuned in to watch the Buccaneers defeat the Saints 30-20 to advance to the Nfc Championship.
The possibly final matchup between future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Tom Brady and Drew Brees — the latter is rumored to be retiring — was the top-rated telecast of the weekend and the top-rated NFL broadcast since Super Bowl Liv in February. It drew a 21.2/39 overnight rating, Fox said today.
The game was a solid lead-in to Fox’s freshman animated series The Great North, which skyrocketed to a 2.6 in the demo and netted 8.42 million viewers since its premiere. Family Guy also saw a surge since its last fresh episode, delivering a 1.1 in the demo and 3.34. These fast-affiliate numbers are preliminary and likely will be adjusted in finals.

Nickelodeon’s special broadcast of an NFL playoff game on Sunday was not only a hit on social media. The Chicago Bears-New Orleans Saints matchup drew more than 2 million viewers for the kids-focused network, marking its biggest audience in nearly four years.
On CBS, the game was watched by 28.6 million viewers, bringing the total between the two networks north of 30 million. That made it the most-watched game of the entire weekend, which featured six games for the first time. CBS also aired the Indianapolis Colts-Buffalo Bills game on Saturday afternoon.
The Nickelodeon broadcast featured its own announce team, filled with stars from “All That,” as well as Nick-themed graphics including “Spongebob SquarePants” and that trademark Green Slime.
Some of the differences also included an explanation of NFL rules by “Young Sheldon” star Iain Armitage, and comparisons of Saints quarterback Drew Brees and teammate Taysom Hill to SpongeBob and Patrick.

Once again, NBC’s Sunday Night Football topped primetime last night, delivering a 4.1 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 13.77 million viewers who tuned into watch the New Orleans Saints trample the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-3. This game pitting future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Tom Brady and Drew Brees grew two tenths in the early Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers compared with last week’s dud Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles matchup. As with all live sports, last night’s numbers will likely be adjusted in finals.
CBS meanwhile saw the return of its NCIS franchise after a pandemic-delayed start to the fall schedule. The Season 12 premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles (0.9, 7.04M) was up about two-tenths over its Season 11 average, and was the night’s most-watched scripted program. It was followed by the return of NCIS: New Orleans, with its Season 7 kickoff on par with last season’s average in the demo.

The “NCIS: Los Angeles” season premiere proved dominant over the one for “NCIS: New Orleans,” according to early Nielsen data. But CBS’ west coast-set “NCIS” spinoff, airing at 8, also received a nice lead-in from an NFL-boosted “60 Minutes.” NBC had Tom Brady vs. Drew Brees, but the former was totally blown out by the latter. It was a good win for the Green Bay Packers, but maybe even a bigger win for Sunday Night Football last night – at least compared to last week.
As well as breaking news from the New York Times of the long hidden reality of Donald Trump’s taxes and finances, Green Bay’s match up with the New Orleans Saints faced the determining game of the NBA Eastern Conference finals on ESPN on Sunday. The Miami Heat’s Game 5 win over the Boston Celtics sets up a classic Finals with the Florida team taking on LeBron James and the LA Lakers starting later this week. Last night, there were also high- profile debuts further up the cable dial with Season 4 of Fargo on FX and The Comey Rule on Showtime potentially nipping away at Snf.
Still, with all that, early numbers for Snf are almost the same as last week...

“The Simpsons” premiered its record 32nd season on Sunday night to big numbers, mainly thanks to a strong NFL lead-in.
The return of Homer, Marge and co. delivered a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 and drew 5.5 million total viewers. That’s more than double the previous season premiere on both metrics, with the caveat that the football gave it a 4.8 and 15 million viewer lead-in. The rest of Fox’s Animation Domination Sunday schedule also put up good numbers. “Bless the Harts” kicked off season 2 with a 0.8 rating and 2.2 million viewers, an improvement on its series premiere from 2019. “Bob’s Burgers” and “Family Guy” both scored a 0.7 rating, with the former drawing 1.8 million viewers and the latter 1.7 million.
NBC easily won the night overall thanks to “Sunday Night Football,” which was ticked up around 5% from last week’s fast national numbers, coming in with a 4.4 rating and just under 15 million viewers. Those decent figures are hardly a surprise,...

The National Football League’s Week 2 of its schedule again saw teams staying off the field when the national anthem was played, continuing the pattern seen in last week’s openers. However, several teams appeared to be surprised and caught on the field when the song unexpectedly started playing.
The New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins all were out of sight during the Star-Spangled Banner. The San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions were present during the song, with some players taking a knee or raising a fist.
Some of the team plans seemed more haphazard than Week One’s careful coordination. The Tennessee Titans were in the middle of pre-game warmups when the song started, causing the team to rush to the sidelines.
Titans linebacker Rashaan Evans, safety Kenny Vaccaro, and defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney took a knee,...

Update, 9:45 Am: Sunday Night Football’s official season debut saw a win for the LA Rams against the always hyped Dallas Cowboys, but a loss for NBC and the NFL.
Actually, now the final numbers are in, make that a multi-year loss for the league and the Comcast-owned network.
With just 18.94 million viewers tuning in to watch the big game on NBC on September 13, Snf is down 15% from the 2019 opener of the flagship NFL show.
In fact, with no fans in the seats at the Rams’ high-tech stadium due to coronavirus safety protocols, the kickoff for Snf’s 2020-2021 season is at least a decade linear viewership low, according to Nielsen. The 6.2/33 rating the game drew among adults 18-49 easily won the night, but was also down double digits from early years.

Update: In the later NFL games, veteran New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who created a storm of controversy by saying he would not kneel because he didn’t want to disrespect the flag or military, stood during the national anthem. But he wore a t-shirt during warmups that said “Say Her Name,” a reference to the police shooting of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky.
In Maryland, the Philadelphia Eagles remained in the locker room during the national anthem, while the Washington Football Team stood on its sideline.
In Foxborough, Mass., all of the New England Patriots stood for the anthem, while their opponents, the Miami Dolphins, remained in the locker room. New England quarterback Cam Newton wore cleats saying “7 Shots” and “No Justice No Peace.”

Updated, 12:25 Pm: The game ended over 12 hours ago and now the final numbers are in from last night’s NFL season opener. The primetime matchup between the victorious Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans snared 19.3 million viewers on NBC.
That’s a fumble of 12.3% from the Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears opening game of the 2019-2020 season on September 5, 2019. With racial justice center stage at the beginning of last night’s game, the contest between the reigning Super Bowl champions and the Lone Star state team is up just a touch over the nine-year low of the weather-delayed 2018 season opener in total sets of eyeballs.

Updated Exclusive: While NFL players debate the severity of punishment that might come the way of Philadelphia Eagles Wr DeSean Jackson for tweeting anti-Semitic comments and evoking Adolf Hitler in a widely derided social media rant, team owner Jeffrey Lurie coincidentally launched his new production company Play/Action Pictures with what might be an ideal teaching tool for the player.
Lurie has teamed with Cinetic Media for their inaugural project The Meaning Of Hitler. Directed by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, the film uses the title of the bestselling book from 1978 to put a provocative spotlight on our culture’s fascination with Hitler and Nazism as it sets itself against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy, the normalization of antisemitism and the weaponization of history itself.

Spike Lee has been confronting American society and speaking truth to power his whole career. From the up-close depiction of police brutality in “Do the Right Thing” (which preceded the existence of amateur footage) to the Charlottesville riots that brought the ending of “BlacKkKlansman” into the real world, Lee’s filmmaking is steeped in drawing attention to the injustices facing black Americans, while fixing historical misperceptions they have endured for ages. His latest, “Da 5 Bloods,” epitomizes that trend — the film is a breakthrough in the depiction of black Vietnam vets as the central characters of the plot — which is one of the key factors making it a genuine Spike Lee joint.
“A black Vietnam vet who saw the film, said, ‘Spike, what the fuck took you so long?” Lee said in an interview with IndieWire, recalling a set of New York test screenings attended by veterans in recent months.

If the 2020 NFL season kicks off on schedule, the Washington Redskins and the league will be met with some added pressure from a new documentary called “Imagining the Indian” that aims to change the team name that’s long been considered a “racial, derogatory, disparaging slur.”
“Imagining the Indian” is currently in production from director Aviva Kempner and The Ciesla Foundation, which has worked to erase the history of Native American names, logos and mascots from sports teams and beyond, though as it’s named in the first trailer for the film, the “R-word” has still persisted.
“When you think of a brave or a warrior, do you think of somebody who is the director of a museum? Do you think of somebody who runs a tribe, who runs multi-million dollar industries? Of course you don’t,” a subject in the documentary says in the trailer. “It dehumanizes human beings.

Here is the sports clause, which makes no mention of collegiate athletics:
Professional sports in California may resume training and competition without live audiences, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020 and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdiction of operations following their review of local epidemiological data including cases per 100,000 population, rate of test positivity, and local preparedness to support a health care surge, vulnerable populations, contact tracing and testing. The National Football League is now encouraging its players to “speak out and peacefully protest,” while admitting “we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier.”
“We, the NFL, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of Black People,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday in a video posted to the NFL’s Twitter account. “We, the NFL, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest.”
Goodell’s comments did not specifically mention the player protests of silently taking a knee during the national anthem that was started by Colin Kaepernick during the 2016 season, nor did Kapernick’s name come up at all. Kaepernick has not been signed since that 2016 season.

Charles Barkley reacted to the uproar over New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees’ comments about athletes kneeling during the national anthem, saying he didn’t agree with Brees at all, but found the “vitriol” against him to be “overkill.”
“Drew’s original statement, I thought, was insensitive,” Barkley explained during a panel discussion on NBA on TNT Thursday night.
He went on, “It was very insensitive, especially during this time, but I thought the negative reaction from every talking head on television and some of his teammates was overkill. I’ve never heard a bad word about Drew Brees in my life. He made a mistake but we’ve got to a point in society where everybody on social media thinks they are God, judge and jury.”

Several of the most prominent stars in the National Football League posted a video demanding the league condemn racism and admit it was wrong to silence protesting players.
The video comes after the death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes, after Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. Organizations around the country, including the NFL, shared statements of support after Floyd’s death.
However, some people viewed the NFL’s statement as insincere, after quarterback Colin Kaepernick faced backlash for kneeling during football games to protest police brutality and the oppression of Black rights.
“It’s been 10 days since George Floyd was brutally murdered. How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players? What will it take? For one of us to be murdered by police brutality? What if I was George Floyd?” the players ask in the video.

The schedule for what promises to be one of the stranger National Football League seasons was unveiled tonight, as the league highlighted the big games planned for its 2020 regular-season schedule.
As other sports leagues scramble amid the coronavirus outbreak, the NFL still plans to kick off in the fall. And the league didn’t offer anything today in the way of contingencies.
The league’s full 2020 schedule — 17 weeks, 256 games — is planned to start September 10, the same week as usual. In that opening Thursday Night Football game, the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will open at home in Arrowhead Stadium against the Houston Texans.

The NFL released its 2020 schedule on Thursday, which came with a massive asterisk due to the uncertainty surrounding live sports amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will tentatively kick off the season on Thursday, Sept. 10, against the Houston Texans. Other games of note include the unveiling of the new, glitzy SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which will play host to the Rams and the Chargers. The Rams get the inaugural game, where they will host the Dallas Cowboys in the first “Sunday Night Football” matchup on Sept. 13.
The newly-christened Las Vegas Raiders will begin their tenure in Sin City against the Carolina Panthers, with their first home game in their new city set for “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 21. Tom Brady’s first game as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer will come against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, with his homecoming a week later against the Panthers.
