- In December 1924, he was attending a meeting of the Pan-American Federation of Labor in Mexico City. With his health deteriorating, he expressed his wish to die on American soil. He was taken by special train to Texas and died in San Antonio.
- A founder of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in 1881. In 1886, the group was reorganized as the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and Gompers was elected president. Except for the year 1895, he was president of the AFL until his death.
- Buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, in Sleepy Hollow, New York.
