“Parasite” became the first foreign language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars to go with three other victories for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. but that’s not the only history it made on Sunday. Here are all the barriers the South Korean hit has broken.
1. First foreign language film to win Best Picture
“Roma” came close, but “Parasite” crossed the line. “Parasite” was only the 12th film not in the English language to be nominated for Best Picture and the first from South Korea. Bong Joon Ho and Kwak Sin Ae are the first Asian producers to win Best Picture.
2. First South Korean film to win Best International Feature Film
Hard to believe, but no South Korean film had ever been nominated for Best International Feature Film, fka Best Foreign Language Film, until “Parasite.” And now the country is 1/1 in a category that historically favors European films.

After its victories over the weekend at the Writers Guild of America Awards and BAFTAs, “Parasite,” written by Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won, has eclipsed Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” for the top spot in our Best Original Screenplay Oscar odds. If they indeed walk away with the prize on Sunday, Bong and Han would be the first people of Asian descent to win for writing in either category.
Unsurprisingly, there have not been a ton of Asian writing nominees in Oscar history, but nearly all of them have come in Best Original Screenplay. Hanif Kureishi, who is of Pakistani descent, was the first, receiving a nomination for “My Beautiful Laundrette” (1986). Thirteen years later, the Indian-born M. Night Shyamalan was shortlisted for “The Sixth Sense” (1999). Iris Yamashita, who’s Japanese-American, shared a bid with Paul Haggis for “Letters from Iwo Jima” (2006). Nearly a full decade later,...

Ever since Universal-DreamWorks’ “1917” debuted, reporters have seemed fascinated with the fact that women played key creative roles in the film. The list included Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who co-wrote it with director Sam Mendes, and producers Pippa Harris and Jayne-Ann Tenggren.
The surprise is surprising.
Neal Street Prods., which Harris, Mendes and Caro Newling formed in 2003, has always maintained a 50-50 gender balance. “It’s in our company’s DNA. Plus, Sam didn’t want production of ‘1917’ to be a macho environment,” says Harris.
Further confounding stereotypes, the film’s strong emotions were not a “feminine touch” but came from both writers, Wilson-Cairns and Mendes, while she was the expert on all things dealing with World War I.
This shouldn’t be a shock because Hollywood history is filled with women who helped create some of the greatest “male-driven” films ever. In 1921, June Mathis scripted “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,...

On Wednesday, Agc Studios founder Stuart Ford, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Harald Kloser unveiled to buyers at Cannes’ Carlton Hotel one of the biggest-budgeted movie projects ever to be offered on the open market: Emmerich’s “Moonfall,” a $150 million sci-fi action-thriller.
To raise “Moonfall’s” finance, alongside partners CAA, Agc Studios by Wednesday morning was “already immersed in a wide range of discussions and negotiations from sources ranging across major studios to the big independents to Chinese and international equity investors, to local Chinese distributors,” Ford said.
Agc held a standing room-only informational meeting packed with a reported 500 international attendees — hailing from Brazil, China, Japan and France, to name a few places — at a chandelier-lined ballroom in the Carlton Hotel, which overlooks the Mediterranean and the Croisette.
The team hopes to finish “Midway,” currently in the final stretch of post-production, by mid-September, then begin prepping “Moonfall” in...

Kumail Nanjiani was best known as a stand-up comedian and one of the stars of HBO’s “Silicon Valley.” But he took that classic advice to “write what you know” literally and penned “The Big Sick” with his wife Emily V. Gordon about how they met and fell in love, and how in the midst of that she fell gravely ill. Now the couple is nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and if “The Big Sick” wins not only would it be a fairy-tale ending for the pair, but Nanjiani would make history as the first person of Asian descent to win for writing.
Hanif Kureishi, who like Nanjiani is of Pakistani descent, made history as the first Asian writer nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “My Beautiful Laundrette” (1986). Then Indian-born M. Night Shyamalan revolutionized storytelling with his original screenplay for “The Sixth Sense” (1999) and reaped a nomination 13 years later.

And the Oscar nominees are ... the whitest since 1998.
That's the truth as far as the acting categories are concerned. For the first time in 17 years, not a single person of colour stands to win an acting Oscar. [The Atlantic says the last entirely white Oscar nomination list was in 1995. We'll let them duke out which year it is.]
We here at Moviefone Canada looked at Oscar winners and nominees from the past decade to see how they stack up against the upcoming 2015 ceremony. We restricted ourselves to the acting, directing and screenwriting categories.
The definition of "people of colour," of course, varies widely. But when it comes to Oscar nominations, we largely considered people who don't come from an all-white heritage within the last couple of generations.
We plugged the numbers ... and 47 out of 350 nominees in the past 10 years went to people of colour.
That's 13 per cent ... and it's not enough. Especially when U.S. government statistics show that white people (excluding Hispanics or Latinos) make up only 62.6 per cent of the country's population.

Fast 5 director Justin Lin has teamed up with KevJumba (Kevin Wu) and NigaHiga (Ryan Higa) to launch the Yomyomf Network, one of YouTube's slate of funded original channels announced last October. Today Yomyomf launched a promo video "Bananapocalypse" which stars KevJumba, Higa, and Chester See in what could be best described as a massive pillow fight without the pillows. The crazy video features appearances from Jessica Alba, Tyrese, Sung Kang (Fast Five), Masi Oka, Wayne Brady, Harry Shum Jr. (Glee), and a bunch of puppets. "This is where the magic is made and all of Google's money is spent—on cool stuff like Jessica Alba washing a car with her sexy friends," KevJumba says in the video. Lin, whose directing credits also include MTV's Better Luck Tomorrow,Universal's Fast & Furious and episodes of the NBC comedy Community, created the Yomyomf channel out of YouOffendMeYouOffendMyFamily.com, an Asian American pop culture...
