One week before production is scheduled to start on writer-director Ondi Timoner’s “Mapplethorpe,” the biopic starring Matt Smith as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, “Imposters” actress Marianne Rendón has been cast as Patti Smith, IndieWire has learned. The role was originally slated for Zosia Mamet until she dropped out over scheduling conflicts.
What the film doesn’t have, however, is the support of Patti Smith.

Music documentaries are a genre unto their own – sometimes they give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your favourite band, and sometimes they’re about someone you’ve never heard about who become your favourite band. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of the Top 10 Best Music Documentaries of all time:
Anvil! The Story Of Anvil
An opening of Heavy Metal icons such Slash, Lemmy and Lars Ulrich singing the praises of a band you’ve never heard of makes you think it’s all just a Spinal Tap style spoof. But no, after never quite hitting the big time in the early 80s, Canadian Metal band Anvil have still been plugging away despite the lack of success – at the beginning of the film frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow is having to make a living delivering school dinners in Toronto! It’s a heart-warming underdog tale of never giving up your dream.

50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

Asif Kapadia's breathtaking documentary Amy is already wowing critics and fans, so its official release this week makes it a good a time to be reminded of some other great music documentaries.
There's David Byrne's giant suit and Bob Dylan's oversize shades. Two films from Martin Scorsese but just one from Julien Temple. Punk rockers and pop superstars. We count through ten leading music documentaries below.
10. The Filth and The Fury (2000)
Julien Temple's first Sex Pistols film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle was Malcolm McLaren's make-it-up-as-you-go-along take on things. Twenty years on the same director gave the group the right to reply, including Sid Vicious with some beyond-the-grave archive footage.
9. In Bed with Madonna (1991)
Known as Madonna: Truth or Dare in the Us, this absurdly naughty chronicle of the Queen of Pop's infamous 'Blond Ambition' tour is arguably her greatest on-screen moment. Bitchiness, bottle-fellating...

What goes on tour stays on tour – unless it's caught on camera. With classic Beatles comedy A Hard Day's Night returning to UK cinemas on July 4, and Metallica's triumphant set at Glastonbury reminding us how far they've come from darker days, now feels like the time to look back on some of the movies that prove that maxim.
Below, we catalogue the craziest music movies ever made, helpfully divided into four distinct categories of weirdness.
Bad Behaviour
Beginning with its 70-something subject attacking the director with his walking stick, Beware Of Mr Baker (2012) introduces a man – ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker – so bellicose he's made the whole world his practice kit. Like Brick Top from Snatch with even greater anger-management issues, Baker is a bitter old codger who "communicates more through his drums than his words", according to his long-suffering daughter. He certainly doesn't mince the latter.

Anthony Bourdain — the notoriously snarky chef, writer, and world traveler — is returning to CNN on April 13th with a new season of Parts Unknown, where he will continue to excavate local gastronomy in global locales, from street food in the Punjab to quotidian grub amidst the drug wars in Mexico. “We try to make each episode look as different as possible, with different physical cinematography," Bourdain says. "We'll use different equipment, different lenses, a different sort of reference of films - specifically tailored to each episode. We want each episode...

A mysterious black horse and a cloaked death-like figure travel through the dreams and nightmares of a young boy in “Evil Things,” the new video from dark psychedelic rockers The Black Angels. Directed by artist/photographer/filmmaker Kevin Castanheira, the film's haunting imagery compliments the droning, pulsing cosmic tones and heavy, Sabbath-style rhythms that permeate the band's critically-acclaimed new album Indigo Meadow. The Black Angels hail from Austin, Texas, and recently played South By Southwest on the heels of a Winter tour with the legendary Roky Erickson (one of the giants of postmodern rock). They will be curating their own seventh annual Austin Psych Fest on May 2nd through 4th, featuring bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Loop, The Dandy Warhols and Panda Bear. Be sure to also check out the Psycho-inspired video for Melinda Ortner's “One More Day,” which debuted on Fearnet to coincide with the Season 2 premiere of Bates Motel.

Following great acclaim at Sundance and festivals around the world, Searching For Sugar Man comes to UK cinemas this month and definitely falls into the former category. You’ve probably never heard of Sixto Rodriguez – he was meant to be the new Bob Dylan, but he quickly disappeared back into obscurity. Yet not in South Africa – where he went on to be bigger Elvis. All this success went completely unknown to Rodriguez himself, and the film is the remarkable story of two South African fans trying to find out what happened to their hero.

The first thought that came to mind upon arriving to director Buddy Giovinazzo’s then-shooting supernatural horror flick Ginger on Sunday, December 18 of 2011 was, “This looks like some place Charles Manson would have frequented back in the Sixties.” As I was to find, I was correct in that assumption, and as it turned out, Giovinazzo himself, too, was working hard to add yet another creepy chapter to the location’s storied past alongside Ginger stars Marc Senter and Elissa Dowling.

Most rock-centric documentaries fall into one of two camps: the hagiographical tributes to artists that frame and justify a performer's failings within the larger picture of his battles for success, and the warts-and-all examinations that tend to use the excesses of said performers as evidence of the inherent vapidity in the field. A good example of the former is pretty much any episode you ever saw of VH1's "Behind the Music," which today airs sporadic episodes profiling chart-toppers like 50 Cent but between 1997 and 2006 would spend 44 minutes running every conceivable artist through the same template of success-excess-redemption. For the producers of the series, drug abuse and infighting were an end in themselves. On the other side of the spectrum, you've got fascinating documentaries like Dig!, a riveting look at the egotistical brawling between the members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. The film is utterly engrossing, but...

At one time or another La's western psyche posse, Spindrift, has been associated with just about every big psyche band from Austin to San Fransisco. Early players included members of Psychic TV, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Warlocks. Founding singer-songwriter, Kirpatrick Thomas, has close ties with Dead Meadow, The Dandy Warhols, and has toured with more bad ass stoned-out groups with the word black in their name (The Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Mountain...) than you can shake a tambourine at.

Acclaimed documentarian Ondi Timoner has a knack for picking wildly unpredictable subjects and then going all in, detailing the drama of self-destruction from an insider’s vantage point. Both Anton Newcombe, the fiery frontman of cult-rock mainstays The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Josh Harris, dotcom entrepreneur and Internet stunt artist, were brilliant, fascinating personalities dancing along the edge of personal and professional annihilation in Timoner’s previous Sundance Grand Jury Prize–winning films, Dig! (2004) and We Live in Public (2009). So one imagines the intrepid documentarian hunting around for another larger-than-life character to hitch her cameras to, a mad scientist, perhaps, who’s also a personal catastrophe-waiting-to-happen. Instead, in best-selling Danish author Bjørn Lomborg (The Skeptical Environmentalist), Timoner found a paragon of pragmatism whose controversial ideas about climate change belie the fact that he’s got a solid head on his shoulders.

Teen sensation Justin Bieber has received an unlikely honor - he has topped a list of the most bizarre concert cancellations. The "Baby" hitmaker's show in Sydney, Australia in April was axed by police over safety fears when thousands of young fans descended on the area and hundreds became "distressed" amid frenzied scenes.
The incident saw off competition from British singer Morrissey - his decision to cancel an entire tour of Canada last year in protest at the country's seal hunting came second in the poll for men's magazine Esquire. Meat Loaf came third after he cut short a gig in Newcastle, England in 2007 due to "exhaustion" - then announced he was retiring from music immediately. The "Bat Out of Hell" hitmaker changed his mind a few days later and resumed his tour.
