Often in cinema, and certainly in the documentary format, there is an expectation that is projected onto audiences, of an unashamed desire for conflict. Perhaps aided by the rise in True Crime mini-series on the likes of Netflix, with a popularity that suggests a thirst for morbidity amongst viewers. But there is something to be said about simply delving into the life of an inherently good-hearted, affable (and unproblematic) subject. On this occasion the aforementioned individual is former footballer Jermain Defoe, who hung up his boots in 2022 after a decorated and illustrious career, scoring goals, and a lot of goals at that, for both club and country.
Directed by James Ross, there’s an in-built affection here for his subject, as we follow Defoe in his life post-retirement, as he, like all other ex-pros, must mould a new path for himself, be it in the sport, with opportunities in punditry and coaching,...

The West Ham and Tottenham striker considers a rags-to-riches career that began as a schoolkid, and the scandals that followed, with unusual openness
On the face of it Jermain Defoe, former Tottenham and England goal ace, is perhaps a slightly unlikely figure to get his own documentary, even in this era of wall-to-wall streaming events. He never quite achieved the super-elite status of his England colleagues Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard; nor has he established a similarly fond niche in the public imagination as Peter Crouch, whom he partnered up front at both Portsmouth and Tottenham. In fact, Defoe’s story, as outlined here, is in some ways the rags-to-riches tale common to many footballers in the modern era, though perhaps more turbocharged than most given his obvious precocity as a schoolkid.

As an Arsenal fan, I almost feel like a traitor for simply watching this documentary. But I do love a good documentary on almost any subject, football ones even more so. There’s been a lot of good Arsenal documentaries too, from 89 to ‘Invincible’ to Rocky and Wrighty: From Brockley to the Big Time, I’ve seen and enjoyed plenty. There’s also an incredible amount of documentaries on the top stars of the game – Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Gazza, the list goes on – so it’s good to see a film on – for want of a better term – a slightly less ‘big time’ player.
That might sound a little harsh on Jermaine Defoe, who has played for many years in the Premier League and in the World Cup for England. He is no doubt a high-profile footballer.

The story of footballer Jermain Defoe is being told in a new documentary feature, coming to UK cinemas in February.
The latest sporting figure to be the subject of a feature documentary? That’s Jermain Defoe, the former football star who played for clubs such as West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Rangers and Portsmouth in a career that spanned nearly 25 years.
Defoe was awarded an OBE in 2018, for his work with the Jermain Defoe foundation, that supports vulnerable and homeless children.
The documentary feature has been directed by James Ross and produced by Naomi Notice. Defoe contributes to it as well, alongside names such as Sandra Defoe, Gemma Lowery (the mother of the late and inspirational youngster Bradley Lowery), Harry Redknapp, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch.
Kaleidoscope is distributing the film, which will be in UK cinemas on February 29th 2024. If it follows the usual pattern of these things,...

Banijay is pushing into the sports game, while CEO Marco Bassetti has criticized private equity firms for “raising expectation into the market.”
Bassetti announced at Content London this afternoon that the Big Brother powerhouse will broaden efforts in sports partnerships, content investments and M&a. It will focus on docs, digital and “sportainment” via the Banijay Sports division, while not venturing into broadcast and streaming rights.
Bassetti pointed to the likes of Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+’s recent move into sports shows. “They don’t just want [sports] matches they need to do more,” he added. “Leagues and tournaments need a lot of content but we are also thinking about the guys who buy the shows.”
Bassetti said the move represents his desire to transform Banijay from production companies to a “media powerhouse” and the “biggest European studio.”
“That means we have to diversify but also expand our business,” he added.

There aren’t many revelations here but the gawky striker is eminently likable and there’s plenty to enjoy in his story of success against the odds
In an era when anyone with a chunky social media follower count can get their own documentary, it’s bit of a relief that someone as eminently likable as footballer Peter Crouch is subject to the streaming-platform treatment. In truth, this film is basically a bit of brand enhancement, following on from Crouch’s post-football podcast and Crouchfest live show, and as such doesn’t go anywhere particularly unexpected.
Crouch, of course, was the gawky striker who, in the footballing parlance, proved the doubters wrong by making it into the Premier League, winning the Fa Cup with Liverpool, scoring a hat-trick for England and – most potently for the legend – improvising that dopey robot-dance goal celebration and marrying model Abbey Clancy. (Not for nothing...

Kim Woodburn has said that Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield should have been fired from This Morning over “queuegate”.
The Celebrity Big Brother star, 80, shared her thoughts on the drama during a recent appearance on the Not My Bagg podcast.
Last year, the ITV presenters found themselves in the middle of a scandal – dubbed “queuegate” – after they were accused of “jumping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying-in-state before her funeral.
Both Schofield and Willoughby denied the accusations, stating that they would “never jump a queue”.
ITV supported the pair, claiming that they were “there in a professional capacity as part of the world’s media to report on the event”.
Speaking about the incident, Woodburn told hosts Joe and George Baggs: “They were not asked to cover the Queen’s funeral.

Holly Willoughby fell prey to an unexpected on-air prank by This Morning co-presenter Phillip Schofield.
Schofield’s stunt caused Willoughby to walk off set in humourous admonishment, while viewers claim to have heard the host use explicit language in her immediate reaction.
The incident took place during Thursday’s (26 January) episode of the popular ITV morning show, when the presenters discussed M Night Shyamalan’s new horror film, Knock at the Cabin.
Introducing the next segment, which featured interviews with castmembers Rupert Grint and Ben Aldridge, Schofield suddenly yelled out mid-sentence, causing Willoughby to react in shock.
While Willoughby cannot be heard clearly swearing, she makes a sound that closely resembles the start of an “F-bomb”, and then immediately covers her mouth with her hand.
“I haven’t done that for a while,” Schofield said, as his co-star looked around in shock. “It’s perfect.”

Paul Weller has hit out at The Cure frontman Robert Smith in a recent interview, calling him a “fat c***” and suggesting he would “slap him”.
Weller’s comments were made when an interviewer suggested that a song from Noel Gallagher’s forthcoming album sounds like “A Forest” by The Cure.
This then seemingly propelled Weller into a state of what the writer described as “revulsion”.
"Really??!“ Weller replied in the cover story interview with Record Collector.
"I can’t f***ing stand them. F***ing fat c***, with his lipstick and all that b*llocks. He is my age as well, isn’t he?" Weller said.
"He’s a f***ing kn*b end," he continued. "I don’t like him. There you go. There’s someone I would work with. I’d f***ing slap him, or something."
The Independent has contacted representatives of Weller and Smith for comment.

In a far-reaching interview with former soccer player Peter Crouch, the English singer Ed Sheeran made the shocking reveal that he was fired from making a song for the James Bond movie No Time To Die in favor of Billie Eilish when directors for the project switched.
Sheeran was speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, and also talked about some of the worst music gigs of his life, bringing his children on a concert tour, and moving back to his hometown of Suffolk.
On the James Bond gig, Sheeran revealed he almost got the iconic opportunity by saying rather crudely, “I was within a f––king gnat’s pube of doing one.”
He went on to clarify, “They changed directors, and then they just changed scripts, and that was it. But we had done all the meetings, I had started writing it.”

It's almost unfathomable to think about how long James Bond movies have been around, but after six decades and seven different incarnations of the character, the series is an absolute cinematic treasure. Not only are the films some of the most beloved throughout history, but the music has also been consistently phenomenal, so much so that /Film's own Jeremy Smith considers the music to be the most powerful throughline of the whole franchise. The most recent Bond film, "No Time To Die," marked the farewell of Daniel Craig as the titular character, and brought on sadgirl pop sensation Billie Eilish to perform the titular track. Eilish's eponymous theme nabbed her a Grammy, Golden Globe, and an Academy Award, allowing the final three Daniel Craig Bond films an Oscar hat trick for "Best Original Song."
As it turns out, Eilish almost didn't get the Bond gig, as musician and "Game of Thrones...

Dino Sofos might not be a household name in the same vein as Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart lecturer Emily Maitlis or former BBC North America Editor Jon Sopel, but he has had a mighty impact on the British broadcasting news landscape of late.
The creator of the hugely-popular Brexitcast, Americast and Newscast BBC Sounds podcast franchise exited the BBC after 15 years last November to set up his own production outfit, Persephonica, with Tom O’Hara, and has since had a hand in tempting BBC lifers Maitlis and Sopel away from the corporation, amidst a wider talent exodus that has left Broadcasting House bosses nervous.
Along with another ex-bbc heavyweight, Policy Editor Lewis Goodall, Persephonica is gearing up for the launch of Global podcast The News Agents, a daily audio show “holding power to account without fear or favor,” according to Sofos, who speaks to Deadline in the weeks before the launch.

“My perspective is about other people that cinema doesn’t necessarily cater for,” says director Remi Weekes, whose debut His House recently arrived on Netflix. It’s an extremely accomplished first film which tackles big social issues while leaning hard into horror. In the run up to the film’s release talk of awards was being bandied about. The movie landed on Netflix on October 30 – just before Halloween, certainly, but also traditionally the start of the run up to the big awards push. 2020 is of course a trash fire, with awards season shifted till later in 2021 but we wouldn’t rule out attention falling on Weekes’ film, cast and crew.
“I think there’s a bit of confusion as to which box to put it in,” says Weekes.

Absurdly fun comedy show Taskmaster, in which comedians are set and awarded points for completing a series of brilliantly nonsensical challenges, is a tonic for heart-heaviness. It is joyful nonsense and precisely the cleanse required for those occasions when the real world gets a bit much. Watched the news? Dismayed by Twitter? Let Noel Fielding disguised as a banana make it all better.
Series 10 is currently filming and being readied for its new home on Channel 4 following last year’s move from Dave. Den of Geek chatted to the Taskmaster and Little Alex Horne to find out how social distancing measures will affect the finished series.

Out of the frying pan, through the fire and into the hellish, demonic inferno of British low-income public housing. For husband-and-wife Sudanese refugees Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku), every stage of their journey from their war-torn African village hometown to the dehumanizing limbo of a U.K. detention center via a perilous ocean crossing that claims the life of their little girl, seems progressively more fraught than the last. But in writer-director Remi Weekes’ debut feature, , it’s the final move — the one that should at last deliver them from evil — that cues the greatest evil of all.
Beautifully played by Dirisu and Mosaku, who bring a grounded, emotional sureness to the depiction of a real marriage crumbling under the most surreal of circumstances, the couple arrive at their newly billeted council house with hopeful hearts. And though the ugly home, shown to them with casual brusqueness by...

Amazon has announced that more than 40 presenters and former professionals will be part of its English Premier League lineup, with its coverage of the soccer competition kicking-off in December.
Amazon secured rights to show the Premier League in the UK last year, and will air 20 matches a season. Coverage will launch on December 3 with mid-week fixtures, before it shows 10 matches on December 26-27.
BBC presenter Gabby Logan will anchor the Sunset+Vine-produced action, alongside Eilidh Barbour — a BBC and Sky broadcaster — and Jim Rosenthal, a veteran who has covered the world’s biggest sporting events for major UK broadcasters.
Logan is already hosting weekly Amazon soccer show Back of the Net, but her presence on live coverage is still a coup for the Jeff Bezos-owned streamer. Logan is one of the BBC’s highest-profile presenters, taking home a salary of more than £290,000 and hosting shows including Sports Personality of the Year.

Time is running out for Aston Villa. They might not be in the bottom three – thanks in part to the abject performances of some of their rivals at the foot of the league – but they simply cannot score and the clanging chimes of doom are getting louder as every game passes without hitting the net. You cannot avoid relegation if you don’t have it in your side to decide your own fate, and that’s precisely the power of goals.
Right now Villa’s front-line looks thread-bare: Christian Benteke has gone from being a sensation to looking lazy, Gabby Agbonlahor looks more of a threat running from deep (and doesn’t score enough) and Andi Weimann has quickly become a figure of fun (at best) thanks to some comically poor performances this year. She said: ''I think pregnancy's such a weird thing. One part of your brain is going, 'Oh my God, I'm so blessed, it's a miracle', and the other half is going, 'I can't bear this. I'm so fat. I'm ugly. I've got headaches. I've got spots. I feel sick!' ''Pete's not too happy with me moaning every two seconds, but it is weird...

Strictly Come Dancing champion Abbey Clancy has spoken to Jonathan Ross about the numerous rumours about her relationship during her time on the BBC reality show, insisting that she's still happily married with her footballer husband Peter Crouch.
Clancy described the Stoke City striker as her "best friend" and a "great dad", insisting that her partnership on the dancefloor with pro dancer Aljaž Skorjanec was purely professional.
Speaking about the tabloid speculation, the model said: "I think it was one of the reservations I had about it really.
"I know what went on and he knows what went on, so it's not like that, you're just learning to dance."
When asked about family life with Crouch, she said: "He's incredible. He's a better dad than I am mum. I was a bit worried when I got pregnant because he's not used to being around kids, whereas I am.

Sunderland emerged victorious at the Stadium Of Light in the Premier League for the first time since November 10th as they defeated Stoke City by one goal to nil.
Adam Johnson got the only goal of the game after 17 minutes when he pounced on a rebound to poke home from close range. In the second half, Nzonzi was dismissed early on for a second bookable offence and Vito Mannone made vital saves to deny the visitors onslaught.
Sunderland enjoyed most of the possession in the opening exchanges as Sebastian Larsson forced an early save from Asmir Begovic. At the other end, Vito Mannone had to be alert to collect Ki Sung Yeungs dangerous header back to goal.
As the game approached the 20 minute mark Sunderland took the lead. Begovic can’t hold Borini’s initial effort and Adam Johnson rounded the hapless keeper before poking home...

Jose Mourinho tried to play down the pressure on his side after his side was drawn to play away at Manchester City in the fifth round having overcome Stoke one-nil at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“It’s good. Our priority for the season is to improve, and to improve you need difficult games. We take on the best team twice in fifteen days. We travel to the best stadium, where they smash every team, where they have scored four, five goals against the big teams like Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United.”
“We have nothing to lose.”
The Blues boss felt his deserved to win more comfortably than the one-nil score line as Chelsea beat Stoke at Stamford Bridge to progress to the fifth round of the Fa Cup on Sunday.
“We played a very good game. The one-zero does not reflect the quality and dominance of our game.

Stoke City won their last meeting with Chelsea in December, but it was their first victory in 13 attempts. In among those encounters were ten Blues wins, including a 7-0 and 4-0.
Mark Hughes thus achieved something predecessor Tony Pulis never did by beating his former club. Now the Potters travel to Stamford Bridge in the last tie of Fa Cup fourth round weekend. Stoke reached the final in 2011, but were runners-up to Manchester City.
No team in England has dominated this competition like Chelsea in recent years. They have featured in four of the last seven Fa Cup finals, winning all of them. The first of those came in 2007 during Jose Mourinho’s first spell as Blues boss.
The Potters have lost four of their last six matches, but their single recent win came in the cup when they knocked Championship leaders Leicester City out in the last round.
