This is the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s Music in Crisis series, which looks at how people all across the music industry are coping with the coronavirus pandemic.
While Covid-19 cases in the U.S. continue to surge and cripple live music, Norwegian musician Sondre Lerche is busy playing shows in his home country, crediting his ability to do so with an untranslatable Norwegian word.

As was covered in our previous article about the event, the First Time Fest gives new filmmakers the opportunity to get their film established and distributed so that their efforts may be recognized for their future works. With the winner receiving full distribution of their film from Cinema Libre Studios as well as support on their future projects. All filmmakers received expert advice from filmmakers who had trouble getting their start and the special winners would also receive a trip to Scandinavia, because why not? The closing night ceremony was held at the 42West Nightclub in New York City and featured the filmmakers in the competition as well as Julie Taymor getting honored for her cinematic contributions.
Taymor received the John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema for her career ever since she started with Titus, a Shakespearean adaptation starring Anthony Hopkins in the lead role. She continued to...

#5. Love Is Strange
Big-screen romance has moved far beyond cigar smoking gentlemen with obscenely chiseled jaw lines holding doors for iconic beauties that don’t mind being called “darling”. Slowly but surely, cinema has come to honor the wonderfully varied ways in which we connect. Yet there remains an obsession with aggressively youthful lovers (critically acclaimed Blue is the Warmest Color being a recent example). Ira Sach’s Love Is Strange portrays lifetime lovers Ben and George, beautifully performed by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina respectively, who finally tie the knot in a quaint lower Manhattan ceremony. The heartfelt portrait does not earn its praise simply because older gay couples have been underrepresented, but for capturing, with honesty, the tender intimacies shared by people that have spent 39 years in love. With the warmth of its domestic settings and slice-of-life sensibility, Love is Strange maintains its subtlety while delivering an emotional wallop.

They range in age, amount of screen time, supporting or principle characters, and have previous (television work, stage and or bit parts in Hollywood/Indiewood productions or next to no film experience at all. In essence these folks have a special gift and have essentially broken out. I had the fortune of having a team of four journalists (Caitlin Coder, Jordan M. Smith, Nicholas Bell and myself) covering the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and when you got a small army covering a major fest it ensures that fine performances from a new crop of acting talents don’t go undetected. Michael B. Jordan, Robin Weigert and Miles Teller (who follows up The Speculator Now with a dramatically and physically charged perf in the marvelous Whiplash) were just some of the new faces included on our top list last year.Worthy mnetions that did not break into our Top 10 include Fishing Without Nets‘ Abdikani Muktar,...

Last week we brought you word that Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Beastie Boy Ad-Rock where bringing their musical skills to a couple of films headed to Sundance by providing a score (Lynn Shelton's "Laggies" and the baseball flick "No No: A Dockumentary," respectively). Well, that's just the tip of the iceberg. As you might suspect, the worlds of indie film and indie music aren't so far apart and there will be a lot of music to be heard in the films headed to Park City next week, so let's dive in... We previously reported it, but here's another reminder: Jenny Lewis alongside her boyfriend Johnathan Rice are providing the tunes for Anne Hathaway's "Song One" about a PhD student who becomes romantically involved with her brother's favorite musician. First look at the film here. Norwegian singer Sondre Lerche and Kato Ådland have teamed for "The Sleepwalker,...

For those of you who have seen the superb documentary Searching For Sugarman or if you’re still thinking about seeing it, here’s some news about the film. It will be featured in a piece on October 7′s edition of the long-running CBS news magazine TV show ” 60 Minutes “. Now if you’re going to record it with a DVR device be sure and allow extra end time in case the football game runs over ( 30 minutes would be safe, I think ). Here’s the press release:
New York (October 3, 2012) . CBS .60 Minutes. correspondent Bob Simon will spotlight artist/musician Rodriguez and director Malik Bendjelloul.s critically-acclaimed documentary Searching For Sugar Man on the show this Sunday, October 7th at 7pm Et/Pt. The film was released by Sony Pictures Classics on July 27th and is continuing to expand nationwide. The film’s soundtrack album is now available from Legacy Recordings/Light In The Attic.

In celebration of the Sondre Lerche’s 30th birthday in September, the Norwegian-born artist will be releasing a new live album, titled Bootlegs, on Sept. 4. Lerche discusses the album in a press release: “For 12 years I’ve had to endure the constant disappointment of hearing professional multi-track live recordings of my shows … This was the first time I had actually felt excited upon hearing a recording of one of my shows … The crowd is enthusiastic but easily distracted and rowdy; it’s a Saturday night in Norway.”...

Usually when people make Christmas presents instead of buying them, the presents are useless and/or ugly and/or Iou breakfast in bed cards which are real cop-outs. No one ever collects on those! But this Christmas eve, Sondre Lerche made us a gift in his father-in-law's basement, and probably because he's a talented, popular, professional musician, it's really good! Lerche -- who covered Owen Pallett exactly a year ago and Animal Collective the year before that -- wrote on his Web site that Christmas covers of his favorite songs of the year are now "officially a tradition." This year, it all came down to "Changes," by Sandro Perri and Beyonce's "Countdown," which he went with. Because everyone loves when white people cover Beyonce!

That's right. My Morning Jacket played Madison Square Garden. Not just in your dreams. And on Dec. 14, Jim James brought a little Bing Crosby with him. The lead singer performed a slow, cokey version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas." Check it below, and see the band's cover of Gil Scott-Heron (Rip) while you're at it. Sondre Lerche didn't cover a Christmas carol, per se, but his gift to the world this 2011 holiday season is a cover of Beyonce. Music and Muppets go hand in hand and if one song from Kermit can reduce grown men to tears then as the new Muppet movie nears our cinemas it’s time for some of the popular tracks from the Muppets’ previous movies and episodes to get the cover treatment with The Green Album.
There are some old favourites among the new tracks with Ok Go’s rendition of the Muppet Theme getting the whole shebang off to an unconventional start, proving a divisive version of the classic tune. Alkaline Trio’s Movin’ Right Along is a jaunty punk cover of the Fozzie/Kermit duet from The Muppet Movie and it demands a replay or two and will end up in your head but leave it to The Fray to cover the infamous Mahna-Mahna which is likely clamped to your subconscious already. You got to love the Chicago based band Ok Go taking on their own veriosn of the classic Muppet theme song. If you haven’t heard it yet, now you can. The track featured below is taken from The Green Album, for which a collection of current bands covered a host of classic Muppet tunes. The disc hit stores today. Check out the full tracklisting below. Also worth noting: In the video they make an inside joke to a previous video they made featuring dogs. That video is one of my all time personal favorites, so I’ve decided to include it below. Enjoy!

When a friend of ours originally posted the tracklist for "Muppets: The Green Album" on Facebook, it was with the note "Hipsters ruin everything." Ok, actually, it was "Hipsters [bleeping] ruin everything," but you get the idea.
So we were all ready to get up in arms about it too, but then we saw the words "'Bein' Green' performed by Andrew Bird." And we were completely won over. Sublime.
And since "Rainbow Connection" has long been our choice if aliens came down and demanded we sing one song on national television or they would destroy the world, the Weezer rendition (with an assist from Paramore's Hayley Williams) got a pass where it otherwise might not have.
Not to say that they're all our ideal matches. We could live without ever hearing Ok Go's take on the "Muppet Show Theme" again but no one can ruin "Mahna Mahna," and that includes The Fray.

It seems that Disney is finally catching on to the idea that commercial success can hinge on the older demographics.
It started with Almost Alice, which featured songs from the likes of Fall Out Boy, Owl City, All Time Low and more. The album was released alongside of their Alice In Wonderland reboot and not only did it generate quite a bit of fervor over the movie itself, but it also managed to reach the #1 spot on the Billboard Rock and Alternative charts.
Disney is apparently hoping to duplicate last years success story with the release of Muppets: The Green Album. The album, which will be released 3 months prior to the The Muppets, will include a host of Muppets songs as interpreted by various mainstream and indie artists. Whereas Almost Alice seemed to be targeting the teen demographic, The Green Album‘s roster implies that this time they are instead targeting the 20-somethings.

Recently we’ve been posting the Track of the Day, showcasing some of our favourite music. If you’ve been keeping up, you now know we don’t necessarily listen to mainstream fare. The reason I bring this up is because now we have another reason to be excited for The Muppet movie. We know we can already expect some great musical numbers from Jason Segal and Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie who is the music supervisor for the film. But what we didn’t know, was that a tribute album of covers would be released in honour of the film. The CD titled Muppets: The Green Album, will be arriving in stores by the end of the summer and it boasts some great choices including My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Paramore‘s Hayley Williams and Andrew Bird who gets to sing “Bein’ Green.”
The disc will hit stores August 23rd.

Sondre Lerche is a singer-songwriter at heart, turning his first-person poetry into little nuggets of personal pop that are appropriate for just voice and acoustic guitar. But the 28-year-old Norwegian has kept things interesting by consistently inviting company into the studio, going as far as giving his assistants band names on a couple of releases. He also likes to play dress-up, dolling up his songs in jazz, folk, rock, and other styles over the course of six proper studio albums. Lerche seems to be making some sort of career-defining statement by naming his latest after himself, but the music itself ...

Sondre Lerche's brand of pop and rock music has always had a distinguished, fully ripened sensibility about it; but for the songwriter himself, he feels like he's only just entered into a coming-of-age. The 28-year-old Norwegian describes his transition between writing his previous "Heartbeat Radio" and forthcoming "Sondre Lerche" as "going from being somebody's son to becoming your own man." "I got very personal, and was dealing a lot with identity," he tells me from the lobby of an Austin hotel at this year's South By Southwest music conference. Over last few years, Lerche's transitioned from jet-setting to settling, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn,...

41 Songs were declared eligible for Oscar's least cinematically relevant prize a short while ago. Wheeee!
We only didn't share them yesterday because every single damn thing happens in the same week. I'd be more excited about this category if recent years hadn't seen the big show trending away from original performers singing their original songs. If I can't see Cher doing her Burlesque number(s) on Oscar night, someone is going down.
The Academy will choose up to 5 of these songs as nominees, depending on how their voting goes. I've included video accompaniment when available - listen (and watch up).
Which are you rooting for?
Please god no. No more honors for this eyesore movie.
"Alice" from Alice in Wonderland "Forever One Love" from Black Tulip "Freedom Song" from Black Tulip
oooh, now this is more like it. Sadly, it's only a partial video.
"Welcome to Burlesque" from Burlesque

There is a very important lesson we all must learn, and the Dinner For Schmucks soundtrack has come along just in the nick of time to teach us. It is thus: oompah music equals chuckles.
If, by some twist of fate, you are called upon to create the score to a mainstream American comedy starring Luke Wilson and Ben Stiller about, oh, let’s say, two hilariously competitive beekeepers who drive each other nuts with how crazily competitive they both are (they’ll be accompanied by a gorgeous-slash-ditsy female lead who they’re both desperate to date, played by any one of Michelle Monaghan/Isla Fisher/Heather Graham, because if Hollywood has taught us anything it’s that actresses in mainstream comedies are completely and universally interchangeable), put away your electric guitar. Cast aside your castanets and burn your sax. Pick up your tuba. Oompah is your path to glory.

Dinner for Schmucks
Directed by: Jay Roach
Cast: Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Jemaine Clement, Zach Galifianakis
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: July 30, 2010
Plot: In order to win over the hearts and minds at this company, Tim (Rudd) must find a “special guest” (Carell) for a dinner hosted by his boss that gives the spotlight to the world’s biggest idiots.
Who’S It For? Adults. There is tons of sex talk here. Also, it’s for those who like to find dead mice, and dress them up, your movie dreams have finally been answered. While Rudd has a good fan base as well, this really is Carell’s show. You’ll get to laugh at, not with, and not be worried about it being too mean. There’s an odd sweetness to it.

And the title may also advertise a plural amount of “schmucks,” but don’t write this off as a positively dumb movie just yet. Dinner for Schmucks is a moderately smart movie that exercises idiotic humor. That being said, the movie is also for mouse taxidermists everywhere.
Expectations: It’s been five years since Carell and Rudd had an outing together (40 Year Old Virgin). Since then they’ve been making both credible and less-credible funny flicks.

Austin, Texas — It was unseasonably cold deep in the heart of Texas on Saturday night, as winds howled and low-hanging clouds swallowed up the moon. It was the kind of weather that seems to lend itself to mourning.
But inside venerable Austin blues bar Antone's, mourning wasn't on the menu (there were, however, tacos). Instead, friends, colleagues and disciples of the late Alex Chilton, who died earlier this week of an apparent heart attack, had gathered to pay tribute to the man and his music. And while there were a few tears shed, this was a night very much dedicated to celebration.
Originally scheduled as a South by Southwest closing concert by Chilton's influential power-pop band Big Star, the Antone's gig instead became a memorial show.

When you’re 24 and your discography already contains both a smooth-jazz record and the soundtrack to Dan In Real Life, it’s going to be hard to earn back the trust of discerning music fans. On Heartbeat Radio, Sondre Lerche’s redemption strategy is not just to return to form, but to go completely overboard in the process. Orchestration once made Lerche’s feather-light songs even lighter, but this record is straight-up chamber-pop—Sean O’Hagan of The High Llamas even shows up to arrange horns and strings. Radio sprinkles in everything from trombone to banjo, and the increased ...

Musical shape-shifter moves toward orchestral pop
Sondre Lerche has proven himself remarkably malleable in his short career, sliding effortlessly from unassuming singer/songwriter pop and classy jazz balladry to elbow-throwing guitar rock and movie scores. But while he’s become a master excavator, he has yet to find creative ground to claim as his own. Still only 26, the Norwegian neo-pop classicist inches a bit closer to that goal with Heartbeat Radio, his fifth album and the first on which he simultaneously indulges all the sides of his songwriting persona.

Sondre Lerche, whose new album, "Heartbeat Radio," comes out Sept. 8, will hit the road in support of his new Rounder album in early September. The Norwegian Lerche, whose last project was the soundtrack to the Steve Carrell film "Dan in Real Life," will hit the road solo for the month-long outing. That might make it hard to recreate the songs on "Heartbeat Radio" since the label describes the album as a mix of "acoustic guitars and grand orchestral pop," drawing upon his influences ranging from '50s jazz to '70s psych-folk (whatever that is).
