This time next month will see the last area of Ghibli Park – Valley of Witches – open and to celebrate, Studio Ghibli today released an animated promotional video inspired by the new area’s theme – Howl’s Moving Castle . The staff behind the classic Ghibli film returned to produce the short, including Hayao Miyazaki drawing the storyboards! Along with Miyazaki on the storyboards, Howl’s Moving Castle animation director Akihiko Yamashita directed the promo alongside Noboru Yoshida as the art director, who was in the same role on Howl’s and the latest flick from the anime studio, The Boy and the Heron . Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

Hayao Miyazaki just won't stop. The animation maestro has retired then unretired so many times it is just silly now, with his latest movie "The Boy and the Heron" being released in Japan with no trailers and being billed as his last goodbye — until it was revealed he was already throwing around ideas for his next project. "He's thinking about this next project every day, and I can't stop him -- in fact, I've given up," studio co-founder and long-time producer Toshio Suzuki recently said in an interview with French outlet Liberation.
But while the idea of more Miyazaki is exciting, what's somewhat troubling is the future Studio Ghibli is headed toward. After all, this is the greatest animation studio in the world, responsible for all-time classics like "Kiki's Delivery Service" (which ended up on our list of 100 best movies ever) and "Princess Kaguya," and which gifted us Totoro and tanuki testicle transformations.

Studio Ghibli has a new lead shareholder in the shape of Nippon Television Holdings.
A joint statement noted Nippon, one of Japan’s leading media and broadcasting congloms, was acquiring 42.3% of the Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro studio, according to Reuters. This gives Nippon a leading position in the famed anime house. No financial details were disclosed.
The statement revealed Studio Ghibli and its director and founder Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki had been looking at succession plans before the Nippon deal was struck.
Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki, had been looked at as a candidate to take the business forwards a number of times but he believed it would be difficult to lead the studio into the future and declined a role, the statement added.
At this point, Nippon TV stepped in and acquired the stake through its Nippon Television Network Corp subsidiary. Nippon and Studio Ghibli have a long-running partnership.

Yesterday, we received the huge news that Studio Ghibli was going to do some sort of collaboration with Lucasfilm, in what could be the biggest Ghibli news since Miyazaki un-retired for the tenth time. Speculation on what shape that collaboration could be was all the rage on the internet, with thoughts of an "Indiana Jones" animated movie, a "Star Wars" movie, a segment on the upcoming second season of "Star Wars: Visions," or the worst possible outcome: anything directed by Goro Miyazaki.
The prospect of any sort of Goro-less Ghibli/Lucasfilm collaboration is very exciting. "Star Wars" is often at its best when it is animated, as the medium is perfectly equipped to capture the full magic and fantasy of the universe created by George Lucas. "The Clone Wars," and "Star Wars: Visions" proved this, which managed to both expand what we thought of the franchise with poignant and thematically complex stories,...

Goro Miyazaki's film "Earwig and the Witch" is a notable oddity in the Studio Ghibli catalogue, mainly for its medium. Ghibli became famous for its hand-drawn style, and it remained a traditional cel animation studio up until 2020. "Earwig" was the first Ghibli film to be made entirely using CGI, offering a drastic visual departure from their usual fare, offering sphere-headed characters, wiry 3D hair, and detailed and textured backgrounds. The look was infamously rejected by most audiences, with most critics citing "Earwig" as a lackluster effort from a studio known for its stellar track record.

Dear Comrades! (Andrei Konchalovsky)
The gears of oppressive government bureaucracy are designed to crush homegrown opposition before it becomes too threatening. In that sense, institutions and policies put in place by Hitler’s Third Reich and Trump’s Maga cult have a lot in common with those of 20th century Communist Russia, an ideological rope-a-dope that publically posited figureheads like Stalin and later Khrushchev as warriors of the people while privately undermining any citizen-led resistance with brutal force. Andrei Konchalovsky’s great new film Dear Comrades! depicts such a response with the sobering understanding that historical events of any magnitude can be easily manipulated to match the motivations of those in power.

Those familiar with Diana Wynne Jones’ children’s book Earwig and the Witch will be surprised to find Gorô Miyazaki’s cinematic adaptation beginning with a chase scene pitting a red-headed woman on a motorcycle against a yellow Citroën on her tail. They weave in and out of traffic with impossible speed and maneuvering before we see the first bit of magic used to create some extra distance. That’s when a cut occurs for us to watch the unknown redhead walk through a cemetery towards a large orphanage. With a rushed goodbye she leaves a baby at the door. All that’s with her to give any sign of identity is a cassette tape and a note asking for shelter until her mother’s promised return … even if it takes years.

After directing the television series Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter for Japanese network Nhk Bs Premium, Gorô Miyazaki returned to his roots at Studio Ghibli, looking to take on his first film in “full 3D CG.”
For the son of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki—who helped turn Ghibli into an internationally respected animation studio—that project would end up being an adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones’s novel, Earwig and the Witch.
“Hayao and [producer] Toshio Suzuki came to me with the suggestion that this novel was likely a good story for a film adaptation,” the younger Miyazaki says. “I loved the fact that the protagonist wasn’t your typical ‘good girl,’ in the sense that she’s always right, and does the correct thing. She’s very fun.”

After retiring from feature-length films and closing Studio Ghibli this past November, Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki is making a CG animated short film for the Ghibli Museum in Japan. According to the Anime News Network, his son, Goro Miyazaki, made the announcement at a talk show event in June. This will be the first time that Miyazaki will be venturing into CG animation after hand drawing all of his films. The story for the short film has yet to be revealed and while being 10 minutes long, the film has taken three years to make.
Most Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki fans are probably still upset that there are no more films coming from them, especially since they both created many masterpieces together such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, just to name a few. But this news just shows that there is still great work to come from Miyazaki.

Studio Ghibili’s legendary Hayao Miyazaki, who announced his retirement last year, will be making the transition to computer animation, according to a report posted on Anime News Network: "Studio Ghibli's Goro Miyazaki … revealed at a talk show event on June 16 that his father, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, is making a CG-animated short for the Ghibli Museum."Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki said the short will be ten minutes long. It apparently took three years to complete, which, if true, is really impressive — Miyazaki managed to work on a film for three years in complete secrecy. Discussing his honorary Oscar last year, the famed Japanese filmmaker said: “I think talent decides everything. More than the method, what's important is the talent using it. There's nothing inherently wrong or right about a method, whether it be pencil drawings or 3-D CG. Pencil drawings don't have to go away, but...

Because this is not a Japanese film site, Japanese film news tends to slip under the radar. So while Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter was announced in February as something new and sparkly and unique – a Studio Ghibli TV series, headed up by Goro Miyazaki (son of Hayao), to be done entirely in CGI – it was mostly forgotten about in the post-February world. Only now, several months later, has Ronia has peeked its head above the Tokyo skyline, and it’s here to show us what traditional Ghibli animation looks like when hauled screaming into the third dimension. The results? They’re Ok, I guess. The series, based off a children’s book by “Pippi Longstocking” author Astrid Lindgren, tells the tale of a young girl who lives in the woods with her father’s clan of thieves and mercenaries. Adorable criminal hi-jinx ensue. Oh, and for those wondering if the narrator says anything of note, here...

When Hayao Miyazaki retired last year at the age of 73, animation lost one of its most accomplished and dedicated practitioners. His work, comprising 11 features and numerous shorts, needs little introduction: films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle have long since etched themselves on the minds of audiences all over the world.
Miyazaki's final film, The Wind Rises, was a bravely individual parting shot. A drama about the designer of the legendary Japanese fighter plane, the Mitsubishi Zero, it felt like a final, heartfelt statement from a truly great artist - and a fitting capstone to a remarkable career. But with Miyazaki having set aside the painstaking work he put into animating his films over the course of some 48 years, the inevitable question...

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2011, and a great year for lesser-seen gems...
Even a cursory glance at the top 10 grossing films of 2011 reveals something strange: nine of the entries are sequels. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought the fantasy franchise to a close with a staggering $1.3bn haul. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon wasn't too far behind with just over $1.1bn. On Stranger Tides continued the Pirates Of The Caribbean series' wave of success, despite mixed reviews.
Elsewhere in the top 10, you'll find another Twilight, a fourth Mission: Impossible, a second Kung Fu Panda, a fifth Fast, another Hangover, and further Cars. Standing alone on the list is The Smurfs, the adaptation of Peyo's Belgian comic strip. In fact, 2011 saw the release of no fewer than 28 sequels - the most we've yet seen in any given year.

It couldn’t have been easy being Hayao Miyazaki‘s kid. Dad is heralded as an unparalleled genius; the pressure for a young Goro Miyazaki to do the same must have been astounding. It’s probably why, at a young age, he cast aside a career in animation for the completely unrelated field of landscape agriculture. Yet eventually the call of anime became too great (or he may have stumbled upon some mystical forest spirit that willed him to change careers), and about ten years ago Goro began directing animated features of his own. With the retirement of the elder Miyazaki, all eyes are on Goro. What will he do next? Where will he take Studio Ghibli? Now we know: a 3D CGI television series. Gasp and faint accordingly. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the younger Miyazaki will direct a series entitled Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, an adaptation of a similarly-titled children’s book by Swedish...

Whether or not the legendary Hayao Miyazaki returns from his apparent retirement following his recent “final” film “The Wind Rises," the future of Studio Ghibli still remains bright. Miyazaki’s cohorts Isao Takahata and Hiromasa Yonebayashi have each lent their directorial talents to Ghibli films in the past (“My Neighbors The Yamadas," “The Secret World of Arietty”), but Hayao’s son Goro Miyazaki has also thrown his hat into the ring as well, and now he plans to take the studio into new territory on the small screen. In a post on the studio’s Facebook page, Studio Ghibli announced their first-ever foray into television with a Goro Miyazaki-directed adaptation of a book by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren – best known for her Pippi Longstocking and Karlsson-on-the-Roof books. "Ronja the Robber's Daughter" ("Sanzoku no Musume Ronja") follows a young girl, Ronia, who lives with her thief father in a castle...

The Japanese animation studio is developing a new television series, to be directed by Goro Miyazaki...
Arriving on Japanese television this autumn will be a Studio Ghibli adaptation of Swedish children's book Ronia, The Robber's Daughter, directed by From Up On Poppy Hill and Tales From Earthsea's Goro Miyazaki and written by Reservoir Chronicle's Hiroyuki Kawsaki.
The adventure tale, which tells the Romeo and Juliet-ish story of a growing friendship between the offspring of two warring families in medieval Scandinavia, was written by Pippi Longstocking creator Astrid Lindgren and published in 1981. A successful live-action fantasy film adaptation, Ronja Rovadottar, was made by Swedish director Tage Danielsson in 1984 from a screenplay by Lindgren, but this will be the story's first television outing.
Ronia will be a Ghibli/Polygon animation co-production. To whet our appetites, here's the first image released by the studio:

Studio Ghibli and Polygon Pictures are teaming to produce the animated TV series "Ronia the Robber’s Daughter".
Based on the novel by "Pippi Longstocking" author Astrid Lindgren, the story is set in medieval Europe. Ronia is the only child of a robber clan's chief who live in a large, ancient castle in grand woodlands.
Under the loving care of the clan, she grows to be a strong and active girl. One day, she is finally allowed to go into the woodlands for the first time and discovers the many mysterious creatures who live there.
She learns how to live in the wildness with the help of her parents, and has a fateful encounter with a boy named Birk.
Goro Miyazaki ("From Up on Poppy Hill," "Tales from Earthsea"), son of acclaimed filmmaker and Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, will direct the series. Though the show has a Ghibli-style look, Polygon Pictures ("The Clone Wars,...

★★★☆☆ Directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Studio Ghibli figurehead Hayao Miyazaki, From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) is a delightful coming-of-age drama, made in a similar vein to 1995's Whisper of the Heart. A classic tale of boy meets girl set in 1960s Japan, Umi (Masami Nagasawa) and Shun (Junichi Okada) first cross paths when the former helps the latter up after he recklessly jumps from their school's rooftop in protest to the planned closure of their dilapidated clubhouse. The pair's coastal suburb of Yokohama is being drastically altered due to the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics, modernising the town beyond recognition.
However, a small group of wise-beyond-their-years teenagers believe that preserving the areas rich cultural heritage is more important than constructing a aesthetically pleasing veneer for this upcoming global celebration of sport. The pair soon become closer when Umi begins assisting at the school’s newspaper, however a shocking revelation puts their blossoming romance on hold indefinitely.

Chicago – As “The Wind Rises” plays film festivals this month and plans for a stateside release (we truly hope) by the end of the year, it has been announced that the Studio Ghibli film will be the last directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. One of the most important creative voices in the history of cinema is closing the book on his career, although his influence will be felt for decades to come, especially as his son, who directed the recently-released on Blu-ray and DVD, “From Up on Poppy Hill” carries on his legacy.
The romantic soap opera story of “Poppy,” co-written by Hayao from a comic book, feels a little slight but Goro certainly understands his father’s emphasis on the visual, crafting a strikingly beautiful film that truly looks great in HD. Although it's causing something of a storm in Japan, where wartime matters are still controversial, “The Wind Rises,” the latest film from animation legend Hayao Miyazaki (read our review) is already a huge critical and commercial hit, as is par for the course for the great director (if case you hadn’t heard, he’s retiring). His son, Goro Miyazaki, has always been given a much rougher ride with Japanese audiences, often laboring in the shadow of his illustrious father. “From Up on Poppy Hill” marked a serious turning point though, picking up a slew of good reviews in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, as well as a healthy box-office take and the Animation of the Year award at the Japan Academy Prize (the Japanese Oscars.) The American version is coming to Blu-Ray and DVD this month with a sterling voice cast, including Gillian Anderson, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis,...

Now You See Me The most recognizable title hitting shelves this week is the decent, yet average magician "thriller" Now You See Me, which I recently wrote is getting a sequel, which will likely hit theaters some time in 2015 or '16. This first film was a moderate hit, but strangely the fact it was seen be many doesn't seem to have raised its profile too much. Either that or the people talking about it just aren't in my circle. That said, definitely give it a watch and it may even turn into a film some may want to buy as that sort of mindless movie you throw on at the beginning of a lazy weekend morning. Then again, maybe not.

Being the son of animation’s unequivocal living master who’s body of work ranks among the best cinematic creations ever made, Goro Miyazaki understandably had much trepidation about taking up his father, Hayao’s craft, eventually to be put in comparison to each other, for better or worse. When he finally succumbed to the family business after being approached by Toshio Suzuki, one of Studio Ghibli’s longest running producorial collaborators, neither Ghibli’s seasoned animators or the majesty of the company’s lineage could save Goro’s paltry debut, Tales from Earthsea. Notably missing Hayao’s direct involvement thanks to familiar disagreements, the film, rich with dragons and magic, became one of the least enchanting releases of Ghibli’s generally pristine catalog. Approaching Goro’s sophomore effort with the same apprehension he began his directorial career, with doubts of creative significance lingering in the long, overbearing shadow of his father,...

The announcement came at the Venice Film Festival where his latest (and now final) film, The Wind Rises, just played and received glowing reviews. Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino made the announcement at a press conference where no specific reason was given, which makes me hope this is merely him stepping back and there's nothing wrong healthwise with the 72-year-old filmmaker responsible for films such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and Kiki's Delivery Service. Hoshino added that Miyazaki will hold a briefing in Tokyo soon where further details will be revealed. Right now, no one is making 2D animated features on the level that Studio Ghibli is, and it's due in no small part to the brilliance of Hayao Miyazaki, who has brought us such animated masterpieces as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and the current release creating a stir in Japan, The Wind Rises. From Up on Poppy Hill is proof that the fruit hasn't fallen far from the tree as Hayao's son Goro Miyazaki has now given us his second Directorial effort (from a script written by his father) which is quite a bit better than his still quite beautiful first try, Tales from Earthsea. The story of an imperiled young friendship boasts a huge voice cast of Gillian Anderson, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis, Aubrey Plaza, Christina Hendricks, and more.

A new movie from Studio Ghibli is always something worth seeking out on a big screen, and Goro Miyazaki's delightful From Up On Poppy Hill, out in UK cinemas this Friday, is no exception. A romantic drama set in 1960s Japan, it may lack the fantastical elements more commonly associated with the studio, but it's nevertheless packed full of humour, warmth and exquisite detail. You can read our four star review here, if you're interested.
If you've been wondering where you can see Poppy Hill, you can find a list of cinemas below. Although quite a few of them are in London, it's showing in lots of other cities, too, so there's sure to be somewhere near you showing it.

Studio Ghibli, brings us a slight yet charming romantic drama, From Up On Poppy Hill. Here’s Ryan’s review...
When Goro Miyazaki, son of internationally respected artist and animator Hayao Miyazaki, took on the task of directing the sprawling fantasy Tales From Earthsea in 2006, some critics argued that he’d bitten off more than he could chew. His father had coveted Ursula K Le Guin’s Earthsea books for much of his professional career, and when Miyazaki senior couldn’t direct an adaptation himself, Goro took over - and its middling critical reception must have made for some awkward breakfast conversations in the Miyazaki household.
Seven years later, and Goro Miyazaki’s back in the role of director, this time in a more contained setting. Adapted from the manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama, From Up On Poppy Hill is a slight,...
