While a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn't officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show's stars however has been told that there won't be a second season.
The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood's security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren't as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.
Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49...

Though ABC didn't have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren't exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network's promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

"The Gates" is the latest entry in the vampire craze that has overtaken the visual media in recent years, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it brings nothing new to the table.
It’s fitting that the show is set within the confines of a gated community, a society completely sheltered from the problems of the real world where private sector police monitor every street corner and every backyard with 24/7 surveillance, kids are schlepped off to exclusive schools, and nobody comes and goes without passing through the massive, wrought-iron gates. And while this slice of manufactured paradise seems like picture perfection, there’s more than one dark secret lurking in the shadows.
Even if you’ve been ignorant of ABC’s media blitz surrounding this summer series, the show blows its supernatural wad in the opening minutes through the introduction of Claire Radcliff (Rhona Mitra - the future Ms. Fini, surely), a vampiric...

Chicago – After years of simply giving up to cable networks like AMC, USA, and TNT, the broadcast networks are trying to reclaim summer viewers; none more aggressively than ABC with three new shows debuting this week — “Scoundrels,” “The Gates,” and “Rookie Blue.” We’ve covered the first dramedy and will get to the cop show later this week but now is the time to break down the supernatural thriller in the middle that stands as the best of the three.
TV Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Gates” is a blend of the hit ABC soap opera “Desperate Housewives” and the country’s obsession with all things vampire from “Twilight” to “True Blood.” At its best, the show recalls a much earlier cult hit with a twist: The legendary “Twin Peaks.” At its worst, it feels like the countless copycats that followed David Lynch’s hit show.

ABC is launching a bout of hot new summer programming, in an attempt to make summers the breeding ground for more great scripted TV. Last year, they tried to do this with the Canadian astronautical series Defying Gravity, which was one of my favorites until it was cancelled due to low ratings. However, ABC is trying again with several new shows that will take over the timeslots of their major shows after their seasons conclude.
One such show is the new series The Gates, which will be ABC's response to the CW's The Vampire Diaries. The Gates, however, is less creature specific than Vampire Diaries, in that it centers on a myriad of supernatural creatures. There are werewolves, witches, vampires. In fact, it sounds like a True Blood meets Desperate Housewives situation. Here's the show's press release:
