CBS’ How I Met Your Mother is as synonymous with music as it is with questions about Ted’s future wife.
From Robin Sparkles to “You Just Got Slapped,” the show has served up plenty of its own original songs. But it’s also made smart, clever use of popular tunes to create many unforgettable, emotional scenes.

Toronto politics have historically never been of much interest to Torontonians let alone the rest of the world. But Mayor Rob Ford's ongoing crack scandal has enraptured even the self-obsessed American media, ranging from that pretentious editorial in the New Yorker to segments on NBC's “The Today Show” to late-night punchlines from Jon Stewart, Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel.
But not everyone is laughing that Rob Ford has become the sweaty (alleged crack-smoking) face of Toronto.
“It's not funny, it's embarrassing,” says Kevin Drew, singer and co-founder of Broken Social Scene, an expansive musical collective that names Feist and members of Stars and Metric among its crew and during the 2000s became Toronto’s musical ambassadors to the world. “I mean, where are our leaders? It's like there's a giant baby running the city.”

4 (four; /ˈfɔər/) is a number, numeral, and glyph. It is the natural number following 3 and preceding 5.
There it is then.
Four.
The number.
Just another number. One of an infinite amount in fact. So what’s its significance? Why should Bloc Party use it as the title of their latest release? Their comeback album even. Well, I mean there’s the glaringly obvious fact that this is their fourth album. Though that’s too easy for Bloc Party, too straightforward. I mean there could well be a basis in that simple fact, but it seems more significant than that.
Given the tensions running through the band around the time of their last album, Intimacy, subsequently leading to the hiatus that this album sees them returning from, Four as an album has more of an importance to the band and their career, than just any other fourth album.

Chicago — The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys and English indie darlings Florence and the Machine will headline this year's three-day Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, Jane's Addiction lead singer and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell announced Wednesday.
"Every year it's kind of a nail biter putting a lineup together," Farrell said in an interview. "There were moments when I looked at it and I was beside myself. I didn't know what to do."
But with the final list also including acts such as Black Sabbath, Jack White and Sigur Ros, "that lineup is just going to be so exciting and it's so diverse. I think it works so well," Farrell said.
The festival in Chicago's sprawling Grant Park begins Aug. 3.
The schedule of more than 120 bands features Lollapalooza's signature mix of mainstream headliners and indie bands. The global factor is strong with acts from across Europe, Chile, Australia and Malaysia.

The L.A.-based rock band and the Gorillaz/Blur frontman (who recently reunited with his Blur bandmates on-stage at the 2012 Brit Awards) have both announced new albums, entitled "Neck of the Woods" and "Dr. Dee", respectively. Akin to those star-crossed lovers kept apart by feuding families in a nondescript 16th century play by a popular bard, myself and The Maccabees have faced similar opposition to our relationship. In our case though, unfriendly relatives were replaced by – a festival set in a sweaty tent by DJ Sub Focus whilst wiping dust from my teeth; bleeding the last drop of my heart out to synthpop duo Hurts in a similarly sweaty tent, with a little less dust; and failing to turn up at a Bloc Party gig in New York (The Maccabees were supporting). Martin Solveig may very well be one of the greatest athletes in dance music. And if you were one of the more than 22 million people who viewed his music video for "Hello" on YouTube — you know, the one where Solveig comes all the way back from a 6-love, 6-love deficit against fellow Frenchman Bob Sinclar, only to throw the tennis match due to a broken heart — then you know exactly why. And now Solveig has released his latest homage to sports with his video for "Ready 2 Go," which premiered Friday (April 15).

"Into the Wild" star Emile Hirsch hasn’t been around much since 2009’s "Taking Woodstock," and now, perhaps we know why: He's been working real hard on his directorial debut ... a music video for Daft Punk's "Alive," a song that was released 14 years ago.
We're not really sure why Hirsch chose the song — which comes at the tail end of Daft Punk's epochal 1997 album Homework — but we've got to admit, he's got quite the directorial flair: His video features a scrawny, skeevily-moustached Ace Norton (a director in his own right, having done clips for the likes of Norah Jones, She & Him and Bloc Party), as a amateur weightlifting enthusiast gearing up for battle against a more toned opponent, actor Frankie Levangie.
So, of course it features plenty of montages, including some spirited beach workouts, a touch of skateboarding, extreme Creatine chugging, and, of course, an epic final face-off,...

Texan festival is known for making or breaking acts
A roster of new acts hoping to export their British brand of music to big-spending audiences across the Atlantic are heading to the Texas city of Austin this week to play their hearts out in bar-room gigs that could help them make it big in America.
The South by Southwest festival, acknowledged as the biggest international melting pot for new ideas in technology, film and music, is seen as a rite of passage for bands trying to crack the lucrative American market, luring dozens of emerging acts, many on the brink of emerging as household names at home.
Among those packing their six-strings and swagger will be the Vaccines, a four-man troupe of indie rockers from London; Chapel Club, a downbeat rock band touted by the NME; and Leeds alt-rockers Dinosaur Pile-Up, who have already notched up success touring with the Pixies.

After a deluge of populist, crowd-pleasing films mixed in with the usual year-end awards bait, the first Friday of 2011 finds an awfully unusual lineup of cinematic offerings at your local movie theater. Gwyneth Paltrow's music-centric road movie "Country Strong" goes wide today, which will give more people the opportunity to enjoy Paltrow's refreshingly excellent singing voice. If you prefer your music films a little more political, this week also marks the release of "Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune," a sharp documentary about the extremely popular and influential protest singer. (It's a fascinating, clear-eyed portrait of an underrated artist and a complicated man.) But if you find yourself in the mood to watch Nicolas Cage spit lines like "I have no such yearnings for home" while making his way through the Crusades, then "Season of the Witch" will cure what ails you.

It’s a savvy, increasingly common model for emerging electronic artists: Instead of hyping self-written music, take songs people already like, give them a creative remix, and hope fans of the originals check out the results. It’s worked for Gold Panda, who, after high-profile remixes of Bloc Party, Health, and others, found a market for a solo full-length. The biggest success of Lucky Shiner, however, is revealing its maker as much more than just a guy who twists knobs during other bands’ music; these subtly eccentric songs drift off the dance floor in a Pollock-style swirl of emotion. Bloc Party and Ash guitarist Russell Lissackwas hospitalized during a recent trip to South Africa after he was bitten by a lion. The British musician, who is playing with Ash while Bloc Party are on hiatus, was in the country with his new bandmates earlier this month for a series of shows.
They took a break from work to visit a local animal sanctuary, but Lissack was left needing urgent medical attention after a lion cub sank its teeth into his hand. The rocker was admitted to hospital where doctors treated the wound and gave him a tetanus shot, according to Spinner.com.
According to NME, Lissack was fine after the attack, but the hospital itself was closed down while he was there after the deaths of two men from an unidentified virus. Together with Ash, Lissack is now back in the U.K.

The new album from Gang of Four, "Content," is the first from the band in 16 years. Founding members Jon King and Andy Gill wanted this new album to prove that they still can deliver intelligent, powerful and liberating rock & roll that is both provocative and simply thrilling.
The Leeds-based, post-punk band will release "Content" on January 25th via Yep Roc. The upcoming release was written by King and Gill. This is the band's first album of new material since 1995's "Shrinkwrapped" and was recorded and produced by Gill, as well.
"What we're trying to do is keep it totally stripped down, where everyone in the band makes an equally intense contribution," King said in a statement. "What I've been thrilled by over the years is that our music still seems to make sense to our audiences, however old they are, and these days they're mostly under 30. The next few days promise to be a busy and bizarre weekend at your local movie theater. There are three high-profile titles making debuts this weekend, each of which seem to be attracting a very specific audience. Fans of classic action movies and wall-to-wall violence can amuse themselves with "The Expendables," while comic book fans and nerds on the fringe can gravitate to "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," an adaptation of the much-adored comic book directed by Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz"). For everybody else, there's "Eat Pray Love," the adaptation of the best-selling memoir starring Julia Roberts.
"Eat Pray Love" tracks the story of writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who ends her relationship with her husband and travels the world to find herself. The trip takes her to Italy, India and Bali, where she is able to find some semblance of inner peace through food, spiritualism and Javier Bardem.

He makes a strong declaration of independence in the opener, “Walk Tall,” where he roars over a ferocious synth saw, “Cut your ties to the past and wave it goodbye.” The second track seeks to sever his indie-rock ties altogether, with his pitch manipulated into a high squeak and layered over old-school breaks. But while The...

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has been full of revelations lately, first coming out of the closet, now releasing a solo album on which he sets aside his guitar in favor of banging club beats. Then again, for those paying any attention to Okereke over the years, none of this should come as a surprise, with gay rumors being the way they are, and Bloc Party not being afraid to go electro when it felt the urge. Produced by XXXchange (Spank Rock, The Kills), The Boxer sets its dance-friendly agenda early, barely coming up for air during an opening trifecta ...

Kele Okereke has admitted that he was reluctant to discuss his sexuality when he was still an active member of Bloc Party. The singer, who released debut solo single 'Tenderoni' this week, confirmed that he is gay to Butt magazine in March 2010. Okereke told The Guardian: "The band was a band, it wasn't just me. I didn't want to talk about it and I don't think they wanted it to be an issue. In fact I know they didn't, because one of them told me once. I didn't want to be seen as a spokesperson for something." Asked what changed since then, he replied: "You learn, don't you? I've learned that (more)...

On June 21, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke will release his debut solo album. It’s called The Boxer, and it’s dancey! It’s also probably the best music he’s released since his nervy post-punk band broke through with Silent Alarm all the way back in 2005. As an artist who seems influenced by everything from U2 to Hot Chip to, uh, Bobby Brown (his first single is called “Tenderoni”), Okereke is a man whose ears we trust. Here’s what he’s listening to and loving....

But now Okereke admits there's a small chance a reunion will happen - and it could be a long while before fans hear of any firm plans to make new music. He tells NME.com, "Who knows how we'll feel about anything in a year's time. I'm not very good at restarting things in my personal life - like if I break up with someone,...

It's Friday, June 11, which means it's time to check out "The A-Team." The film adaptation of the classic television series that made Mr. T a household name features an all-star cast (including Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, "District 9" breakout star Sharlto Copley and former Ufc light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson) and direction by Joe Carnahan (known for his brutally realistic crime dramas like "Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane" and "Narc"). The story follows four soldiers — Hannibal (Neeson), Face (Cooper), Murdock (Copley) and B.A. Baracus (Jackson) — who are are wrongly imprisoned as war criminals and must rely on their mercenary nature to prove their innocence, clear their names and blow a lot of stuff up along the way.

It’s finally sunny here in London! The mercury is on its way to 28 (centigrade of course) and I’m sitting in my garden, listening to soon-to-be-defunct BBC Radio 6 music (which makes me sad). But fear not – there were enough cold hours for me to sit in front of the telly and bring you news of what the devil’s been going on in Britain.

The documentary featured Gareth’s coming out party attended by Dr. Christian Jessen of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies, and singer Will Young, presenting partners Colin and Justin. Please note, I feel very resentful of that as I didn’t have a comin gout party.

Bloc Party's frontman Kele Okereke has silenced rumors the band is over, by confirming plans to record a new album. The singer sparked gossip the "Helicopter" hitmakers were heading for a break-up in 2009 when he admitted they "might never make a record again".
The speculation was fueled when Okereke went on to record a solo album, "The Boxer", but he is adamant he has every intention of keeping Bloc Party together. He tells Britain's NME magazine, "I used to be in the band, and I will be again. I'm looking forward to seeing the other guys and making music with them. I just don't know when that will be."
"Now is about now, and it's all about having fun, it's the only reason I'm doing this. The last year of Bloc Party was really hard work. I don't have anything to prove and I have nothing to be nervous about.

With 2009's Kaleidoscope, Dutch electronic music icon Tiësto made his first major foray into collaborative music making. Bloc Party's Kele Okereke, along with other acts including The Prodigy, Florence & The Machine and Dizzee Rascal, will perform at this year's Ibiza Rocks series. The Spain based music series is held at the Ibiza Rocks hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza.
Ibiza Rocks, which is a weekly summer series beginning in June, will see front man Okereke take the stage on his own. The Bloc Party singer announced last October that he was taking a hiatus from the band to pursue individual projects.
Speaking to the BBC back in October, drummer Matt Tong said: "Unfortunately that is going to be it for the time being." He added: "We definitely need to have a break and gain a bit of perspective on life outside of the band. Hopefully if we do reconvene at some point in the future we'll be refreshed and have so many ideas to bring to what it is we do.
