The Berlin Film Festival has just three Indian narrative fiction features in the 2024 lineup, but all of them are sophomore efforts by filmmakers who have already won global acclaim for their debuts.
Raam Reddy burst onto the international scene with “Thithi” (“Funeral”), which won the Golden Leopard — Filmmakers of the Present and the First Feature awards at Locarno in 2015. Reddy’s ”The Fable,” which screens in Berlin’s Encounters strand, follows a happy family who live as owners of a vast Himalayan orchard, until a series of mysterious fires bring into question who they really are. The cast includes Manoj Bajpayee, Priyanka Bose, Deepak Dobriyal, Tillotama Shome and Hiral Sidhu.

Singapore, July 5 (Ians) Pranavi Urs continues her globe-trotting season as she tees up in the Trust Golf Singapore Ladies Masters, in a fourth continent in just over six months of 2023, here on Thursday.
The 20-year old Pranavi is one of the three Indians in the field of 129 players with 111 professionals and 18 amateurs. The other two are amateur Avani Prashanth and Seher Atwal.
Pranavi, who topped the Women’s Pro Golf Tour of India in 2022, played in Ladies European Tour events in South Africa at the start of 2023 and then headed to the US for the Epson Tour, which is one level below the Lpga.
She then went over to Europe for a few events, again on the Let, before coming to Singapore for the first-ever Chinese Lpga event outside China.
It has been a season of great learning for Pranavi.

Interview with Xiaodan He: I wish to give comfort and hope to the people who don’t give up happiness
Born in Dazu, China, Xiaodan He has studied film production at the Beijing Film Academy and later worked as an assistant producer and director. Her short film “Cairo Calling” and her documentary “The Fall of Womenland” have been screened at many international festivals, for example the Asian American International Film Festival, where she also earned the award for best emerging director.
Her new feature film “A Touch of Spring” is screening at Asian Pop-up Cinema Fest 2020 and tells the story of a woman whose marriage has deteriorated and she decides to return to her home country for a while reconnecting with her family and friends.

To many, immigration, especially nowadays with so many people trying to escape war, hunger and persecution, is closely linked to the idea of finding a new home, starting a new life. In the era of globalization the idea of regarding the whole world as your home may sound almost romantic, but then again the reality is somewhat different, hidden behind the veil or politics, economics and, perhaps even more significantly, tradition and (self-)expectation.
