Exclusive: After working to construct the House of Bezos as a major player in Hollywood, Craig Berman has exited Amazon.
Following years of shuttling back and forth between Los Angeles and Seattle, the Amazon Studios communications chief actually left the Jeff Bezos-run home of Transparent and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel on November 16, I’ve learned. No replacement, interim or otherwise, has been named so far.
“I have had an amazing 14-year run at Amazon, but I am ready for something new,” Berman told Deadline today. “I am fortunate for the opportunity to build a world-class PR and publicity team, and to lead this team through many remarkable and history-making moments across the entire company,” the now ex-vp Public Relations and Publicity at Amazon Entertainment added of a team now numbering around 250 at the e-commerce and media giant.

Amazon Studios has tapped industry veteran Chris Castallo to serve as head of unscripted television.
Castallo, formerly a programming exec at CBS and NBC, replaces Heather Schuster, who was forced out in August amid an investigation into allegations that she was verbally abusive in the workplace.
Castallo will spearhead unscripted development for Amazon. He will be tasked with shepherding two big projects in the works for Amazon: the revival of Mark Burnett’s “Eco-Challenge” with Bear Grylls as host, and the fashion-centric series to be toplined by “Project Runway” alums Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum. After an extensive executive search that came down to a couple of high-profile candidates, former CBS head of alternative programming Chris Castallo has been named Head of Unscripted Television for Amazon Studios. He will oversee unscripted TV development, reporting to Albert Cheng and Vernon Sanders, Co-Heads of Television, Amazon Studios.
Castallo will fill the void left by the August ouster of former unscripted head Heather Schuster following an internal investigation.
Amazon Studios had limited presence in the unscripted space until the recent regime change at the company; its most recognizable title in the arena was The Grand Tour. The rise of the streamers is being felt on the business side of TV, in the markets where buyers and sellers congregate to trade programming. MipTV in April and Mipcom in October have traditionally been about distributing content territory-by-territory, but the world of TV, and its rights, has changed. That is increasingly evident in Cannes, where the theme this year is “the big shift.”
Laurine Garaude, director of Mipcom organizer Reed Midem’s television division acknowledges the impact of Ott and notes the Cannes markets have reflected that. “It’s been many years since Netflix first came to the show,” she says. All the digital platforms will be in town this year. “They are all present, in different ways,” Garaude says.
Speakers at Mipcom include Gong Yu, founder of Chinese streamer iQiyi, and Jennifer Batty, chief content officer at Southeast Asian Svod service Hooq. Matthew Henick will be talking Facebook Watch.

When Project Runway relaunches on Bravo, it will be without its signature stars, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The Emmy-winning Project Runway hosts are exiting the acclaimed unscripted series after 16 seasons, and will develop, produce and headline a new fashion reality series for Amazon Prime Video, which will premiere globally in over 200 countries and territories.
Few details about the new series are being revealed beyond the fact that it “will continue Klum and Gunn’s 14-year relationship and a commitment to making fashion accessible to a wide audience.” It also will employ major synergies with Amazon Studios’ parent company, which is the biggest online retainer in the world, as Amazon Fashion will create a “shoppable experience” for viewers who likely will be able to purchase designs created on the show. Such a union of entertainment and commerce in the digital age seems tailor made for a company like Amazon.

Heather Schuster, the head of unscripted at Amazon Studios, has left the company, after less than a year in the role, Variety has confirmed.
Schuster was promoted to the job in October 2017, replacing Conrad Riggs who was ousted amid the exodus of Roy Price. According to sources, Schuster’s exit follows an investigation into allegations that she engaged in verbally abusive behavior.
Schuster spent a year with Ryan Seacrest Productions, and then launched her own shingle with All3Media before moving to Amazon as a lieutenant of Riggs.
Amazon has been sparing in its ventures into unscripted programming in the years since launching its original content strategy. The company made a big global bet on “The Grand Tour,” the travelogue and automotive show reuniting the “Top Gear” team of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May last year.

Exclusive: Less than a year after taking over from Conrad Riggs as Amazon’s Head of Unscripted, Heather Schuster is exiting the company, we have learned. It marks the first major executive departure on the TV side since Jennifer Salke was named head of Amazon Studios several months ago. There is no word on replacement.
Amazon Studios is not commenting, but we hear Schuster’s exit came after an internal investigation into alleged inappropriate comments during meetings, and possible misuse of power.
The ex-Ryan Seacrest Productions exec Schuster joined the Amazon fold as a senior creative executive last August. On October 24, 2017, Schuster was appointed the head of unscripted programming. She replaced Riggs, one of two close associates of embattled former Amazon Studios head Roy Price, along with Joe Lewis, to leave shortly after Price’s ouster following sexual harassment allegations.

Rapper Meek Mill, who was just released from prison, will produce a six-part docuseries with Amazon Prime that will follow the rapper and his fight for exoneration while exposing flaws in the criminal justice system.
The untitled series will follow Mill, whose real name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, and his supporters as they attempt to expose the different facets of corruption that lead to his incarceration by the Pennsylvania criminal justice system. Last November, Mill was sent to prison for two-to-four years after being seen on an Instagram video popping a wheelie, which a Pennsylvania judge said was a violation of his probation.
The sentencing was perceived as too severe, and caused widespread outrage and triggered a series of investigations, which the series will explore, as well as the negative effects long tail probation is having on urban communities of color. The show will also feature original music from the rapper.

The series is executive produced by Shawn “Jay-z” Carter, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, Paul and Isaac Solotaroff, and produced by Carter’s Roc Nation and The Intellectual Property Corporation (Ipc).
“I’m grateful for this unique opportunity to share my story and I look forward to collaborating with Amazon Prime Video, Roc Nation and The Intellectual Property Corporation on this incredible series,” said Meek Mill. “Not only will this documentary give viewers an unprecedented look at my life, but it will also allow me to use my public platform to highlight the need for criminal justice reform.”

Jennifer Salke has begun to make her mark on Amazon Studios.
The new head of Amazon’s entertainment division has shaken up her series-development team, naming Albert Cheng co-head of television. The move secures a prominent role for Cheng, who led Amazon Studios as interim chief following the ouster last year of former top executive Roy Price amid sexual-harassment allegations. Cheng, a former ABC digital exec, had previously served as COO of Amazon’s entertainment division, a role he will continue in going forward.
Sources tell Variety that Salke is in the early stages of recruiting a veteran executive to work with Cheng as co-head of television, but that no lead candidate has been identified. Cheng and his fellow TV co-head will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the business, creative and production units.

Amazon Studios is developing a documentary series based on Lorena Bobbitt and they've brought Jordan Peele on board as an executive producer. This seems like a different kind of project for Peele to be attached to, it seems like a subject that he would find comedy in, but this isn't going to be a comedy. They are taking this seriously and giving Lorena the opportunity to tell her story.
The series will be called Lorena and it will "delve into the notorious case of husband and wife John and Lorena Bobbitt. In 1993, Lorena made headlines around the world when she cut off her husband’s penis. She later claimed that she did so after he raped her. The series will examine how the case laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage. It will also explore the national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America.

Amazon has greenlit a documentary series on Lorena Bobbitt with Jordan Peele attached as an executive producer.
The four-part series, titled “Lorena,” will delve into the notorious case of husband and wife John and Lorena Bobbitt.
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele said. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice.

Amazon has ordered a four-part docuseries from Jordan Peele about Lorena Bobbitt.
“Lorena,” which will be directed by Joshua Rofé, “reveals the hidden truths in the notorious case of John Wayne and Lorena Bobbitt and challenges the long-held narrative that surrounded this event,” per Amazon’s announcement, and “provides a fresh perspective on the story of Lorena Bobbitt and how one event laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage.”
“Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. ‘Lorena’ reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong,” said Heather Schuster, head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals.

Conrad Riggs, the exec who oversaw the growth of Amazon’s unscripted programming, has left the company. He’s the latest high-level exec to depart Amazon Studios in recent days as the behemoth looks to reorganize its streaming service.
Riggs’ departure comes a day after Joe Lewis, who was head of half hour and drama series development, left the company. Earlier this month, head of international productions Morgan Wandell exited to join Apple in a new gig. Following Lewis’ departure, Sharon Tal Yguado, who joined Amazon in January as head of event series, was given oversight over all of Amazon’s scripted programming.
The reshuffle comes as Amazon Studios undergoes a massive overhaul following the departure of head Roy Price, who was the architect of Amazon Prime’s programming strategy. Price was put on indefinite leave, and then left the company, earlier this month following allegations that he sexually harassed a producer in 2015. Since then,...
