Writer-director Daniel Brown’s Your Lucky Day offers a twist-laden take on the hostage crisis film. Set almost entirely within a convenience store, the story revolves around a $156 million-winning lottery ticket and how it triggers a bloody series of events. A young drug dealer, Sterling (the late Angus Cloud), pounces on the opportunity and robs the unlucky winner right before a policeman emerges from the bathroom. Faced with too many loose ends to simply leave and collect the money, Sterling opts to cut in the witnesses that he initially takes as hostages, as long as they help him cover up his crimes.
For a thriller, Your Lucky Day’s atmosphere is oddly and refreshingly relaxed. For one, the characters don’t need much convincing when it comes to going with Sterling’s plan. Some, like the pregnant Ana Marlene (Jessica Garza), even prove quite adept at scheming as they puzzle...

"This could be our chance at a better life..." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Your Lucky Day, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Dan Brown (not the author). This just premiered at Fantastic Fest a few weeks ago, and it's opening in November. After a dispute over a winning lottery ticket turns into a deadly hostage situation, the witnesses must decide exactly how far they’ll go—and how much blood they’re willing to spill—for a cut of the $156 million prize. Greed and desperation rules America. Ff describes it as "pressure cooker of a morality tale. Effortlessly charismatic, with a canny ability to telegraph the contradictory emotions & restless impulses of marginalized characters, Your Lucky Day marks one of the final performances of the unique young talent whose life was tragically cut short in July of this year." The film...

Before Angus Cloud’s death at age 25 in late July, the Euphoria actor completed work on Daniel Brown’s Your Lucky Day, an intense-looking thriller featuring Cloud as a trivial criminal whose plan to steal a winning lottery ticket spirals out of control. In the Your Lucky Day trailer, Brown depicts how a split decision to seize an opportunity to change your future can turn deadly.
In the promo, Cloud’s desperate character, Sterling, spontaneously decides to rob a lottery winner at a local convenience store. As the conflict intensifies and push comes to shove, Sterling does the unthinkable by killing a rookie cop, landing himself in a position to take hostages or risk incarceration. With $156 million on the line, Sterling and the survivors of the incident enter a pack to split the money after covering Sterling’s tracks. “Nobody ever got rich without doing no crime,” Sterling says in...

Angus Cloud is appearing onscreen for one of the last times in heist movie “Your Lucky Day.”
The “Euphoria” star, who died at age 25 in July 2023, leads writer-director-actor Daniel Brown’s feature directorial debut. Cloud plays drug dealer Sterling, who holds a convenience store hostage after he witnesses an older wealthy man win a $156 million lottery. Jessica Garza, Elliot Knight, and Mousa Hussein Kraish play witnesses, with Sterling Beaumon cast as a cop. The film is adapted from writer Brown’s 2010 short film of the same name, with Rider Strong in the role of Sterling.
“I had written the character based on people I had grown up with: guys who sold drugs and would start fights with frat boys or their stepdads, but who were also super protective and loyal to their friends,” Brown told Entertainment Weekly. “[Cloud’s] stories and outlook were so right on for the character, I just had to go for it.

Before his death at age 25 in late July, Angus Cloud — known for playing Fezco on the hit HBO series Euphoria for two seasons — finished filming a star turn in writer-director Dan Brown’s thriller Your Lucky Day.
The trailer for Brown’s lotto-win hostage flick, which dropped on Friday, reveals Cloud as Sterling, a petty criminal-turned-hostage taker in one of his final film performances. In Your Lucky Day, a dispute over a $156 million winning Megaball Jackpot lottery ticket has a masked and hooded Sterling launching a deadly hostage situation in a small convenience store on Christmas Eve that leads to a rookie cop being shot and the winning ticket holder killed by gunfire.

“America doesn’t care how you get your money.” That line serves as a bleak thesis statement for “Your Lucky Day.” The feature debut from writer-director Dan Brown proceeds from the assumption that in America, nothing — not family, not integrity, not your personal safety or the safety of others — is more important than getting rich. And once you are rich, nothing else matters, including how you got that way. You can pay for lawyers to take care of all that, as sensitive stickup kid Sterling (Angus Cloud) tells his hostages early on in the film.
Sterling’s plan to get rich is, to put it bluntly, short-sighted. He’s one of a handful of people who overhear a pushy, racist...

Writer/Director Dan Brown’s feature debut, Your Lucky Day, elevates a simple concept with palpable tension and intense confrontations. A convenience store at Christmastime transforms into a harrowing battleground when a winning lotto ticket emerges, creating an intense thriller filled with surprise escalations and propulsive action. It’s not just the narrative turns and bleak authenticity that makes Your Lucky Day winsome, but the Christmas caper’s daring commitment to nihilism.
An average night becomes anything but for six strangers at a convenience store around Christmas. A criminal, Sterling (Angus Cloud), arrives at the store in a foul mood, having just lost valuables to thieves. When a wealthy man discovers he’s just won the $156 million jackpot, Sterling holds him at gunpoint. Rookie cop Cody (Sterling Beaumon) attempts to intervene but botches it so spectacularly that it winds up becoming a lethal hostage standoff that also traps the store’s owner,...

Your Lucky Day, the horror thriller featuring one of the final performances of Euphoria breakout Angus Cloud, has secured a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement for publicity ahead of its Fantastic Fest premiere, Deadline has learned.
As with all projects under agreements of this sort — Michael Mann’s Ferrari and the Sean Penn-Dakota Johnson starrer Daddio being just two other prominent examples — we’ll have to wait and see who will, in fact, agree to participate in promotional activities amidst the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. A prominent genre festival based in Austin, TX, Fantastic Fest takes place this year from September 21-28.
Dying of an undisclosed cause on July 31st, at his family home in Oakland, CA, aged 25, Cloud’s co-stars in Your Lucky Day included Jessica Garza, Elliot Knight, Jason O’Mara, Spencer Garrett, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Jason Wiles and Sebastian Sozzi.

What do you get when you mix Manhattan district attorneys, corrupt billionaires, and Silicon Valley unicorns? Well, apparently that all adds up to Quentin Tarantino.
The “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” auteur signed on to narrate Showtime’s limited series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” premiering February 26 — and that’s mostly because of his love of co-creators David Levien and Brian Koppelman’s work on “Billions.”
“Super Pumped” tells the story of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Uma Thurman portrays Arianna Huffington, while Hank Azaria stars as Apple’s Tim Cook. Kyle Chandler, Baba Tafti, Kerry Bishé, Mousa Hussein Kraish, and Elisabeth Shue round out the cast. “Super Pumped” hails from Levien and Koppelman, as well as Beth Schacter, who serves as the current showrunner on “Billions.”

Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

American Gods is canceled, but it may not be dead yet.
EP Neil Gaiman responded to the cancellation after Starz swung the axe, and it's clear the author envisions a future for the series.

Starz confirmed the cancellation on Monday, just a week after the third season finale, which left fans pondering what would become of the characters at the wheel of the story.

The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.

To call the production of American Gods’ first two seasons problem-plagued is to put it mildly; Old Testament Egypt had fewer problems with plagues.
After a successful first season, showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed, followed by actors Kristin Chenoweth and Gillian Anderson. In February 2018, Jesse Alexander and original series author Neil Gaiman were announced as co-showrunners for the second season, but Alexander was removed in September 2018 and the lion’s share of the second season was guided by directing producer Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner. Season 3 now brings new showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee, who reunites with Gaiman and deals with another big cast turnover: New Media (Kahyun Kim), the Djinn (Mousa Kraish), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), and Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones) have all departed from the show, with the lattermost cast member doing so in explosive fashion.

American Gods, old and new, are coming back to life in the new year, at least on the small screen. It’s timely too, because “the struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of American Gods are the struggles of America,” according to author Neil Gaiman.
The series starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane, based on EP Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel, will debut its third season on January 10 on Starz.
With former Walking Dead EP Charles “Chic” Eglee in the seemingly ever-changing showrunner seat, the 10-episode new season will take viewers to one of the chiller parts of the divinely inhabited book.
The teasing art work that Starz dropped today reveals not only the debut date of the new season, but a visual reference to Lakeside Clunker Board from Hinzelmann’s shop, a pretty heavy piece of knowledge for fans of the book and the show.

SAG-aftra is expanding the scope of an investigation into the firing of “America’s Got Talent” host Gabrielle Union. It will now take a deeper look into producer Fremantle after Orlando Jones claimed he was fired from “American Gods,” another Fremantle series, for racist reasons.
The talent union, which represents 160,000 actors, journalists, performers, and other media professionals, announced the expanded investigation in a statement Friday.
“After initial meetings with Gabrielle Union and her representatives about her experiences on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ and after learning more about Orlando Jones’s experience on ‘American Gods,’ SAG-aftra is expanding its investigation of Fremantle Media. Our enforcement actions are handled confidentially to protect the members involved, and we typically do not publicize these matters unless the affected members request that we do so,” it reads. “We have nothing further to report at this time.”

American Gods is going in a different direction with its third season.
Mousa Kraish is bowing out of the Starz drama series, with the actor revealing he will not appear in the forthcoming season.
“I can confirm that I wasn’t asked to come back this season,” he tweeted.
“It has been an honor to play the Jinn and live in his fiery eyed skin… This character has introduced me to so much and I was proud to represent not just the Middle Eastern community in such a positive role you don’t normally see television but also the Lgbtq community that supported this character of color that you don’t see on television.”
The actor did not give a reason for his ousting from the popular series based on the book by Neil Gaiman.

Orlando Jones’ character Mr. Nancy was a fan favorite on “American Gods,” but neither he nor Mousa Kraish’s Jinn will appear in Season 3 of the Starz show. Both actors tweeted that they would not be returning for Season 3 over the weekend and Jones claimed he was fired for “sending the wrong message to black America.”
Jones, who became a series regular in Season 2 and also wrote and produced that season, published a video alleging that Charles Eglee, the new showrunner for the Fremantle-produced series’ upcoming third season, didn’t want his character’s “angry get shit done” attitude.
“This white man sits in that decision-making chair and I’m sure he has many black bffs who are his advisors and made it clear to him that if he did not get rid of that angry god Mr. Nancy he’d start a Denmark Vesey uprising in this country. I mean,...

Orlando Jones had held his tongue for months about being let go from “American Gods,” and how his departure was handled by producer Fremantle and the Starz network. But, in an interview with Variety, Jones said he finally decided to stand up for himself and set the record straight on why he won’t be seen in Season 3 — and how he feels he was disrespected by not getting the full truth for months, time that he could have spent working on other projects.
“I assumed at some point, somebody would say that I wasn’t going to be in season three,” he said. “And I imagined that someone would reach out or, there would be some sort of press release out to respond to that in some meaningful way.”
But there wasn’t, and so Jones said he decided to come clean about his experience after a clip of him as Mr.

"His 'get out of jail' card is going to jail." IFC Films has debuted an official Us trailer for the dark comedy The Day Shall Come, the new film from acclaimed British filmmaker Chris Morris, who last made Four Lions in 2010. The UK trailer debuted a few weeks ago, but this one just a bit better. This initially premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. Based on 100 true stories, the "explosive" film is an emotionally gripping, laugh out loud thriller that exposes the dark farce at the heart of the homeland security project: It is harder to catch a real terrorist than it is to manufacture your own. A preacher in Miami is tricked into becoming the liaison between the FBI and a real terrorist. Marchánt Davis stars as Moses, joined by Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks, Denis O'Hare, Kayvan Novak, Jim Gaffigan, Pej Vahdat, Mousa Kraish, Miles Robbins, James Adomian, & Malcolm M. Mays.

Based on the Neil Gaiman books, the Starz drama of modern deities American Gods is currently in its second season and has been renewed for a third. At The Contenders Emmys, Deadline’s Dominic Patten talked to show stars Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning, Pablo Schreiber, and Ian McShane, who also serves as Executive Producer, about the current season, how the fantasy translates to issues in real life and expanding the universe of Gods.
Currently in its second season, McShane, who plays Mr. Wednesday, said that the show is going back to the books more as they dive deeper into the New and Old Gods. “You have to get back to the source material to get to know the people,” he said. McShane also teased that the upcoming season will take place Lakeside — and for diehard fans, that’s a huge deal.

“American Gods” is returning with a new showrunner.
The Fremantle-produced Starz television series based on the Neil Gaiman novel has officially been picked up for a third season and has tapped Charles “Chic” Eglee to lead the season as showrunner and executive producer. The news comes less than a week after the show launched its second season.
Eglee’s credits include “Hemlock Grove,” “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter,” and “The Shield.” He is repped by CAA and Gendler & Kelly.
He will now be the third showrunner at the helm of the series. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green served as co-showrunners during the first season but departed over clashes with Fremantle over the show’s budget and creative direction. Jesse Alexander shepherded “Gods” through its second season, but he was reportedly sidelined during production without being officially let go.

Exclusive: Nothing is written on stone tablets yet, but a third season of American Gods looks to be a divine certainty. “We didn’t make Season 2 of American Gods not to make a Season 3,” a source close to the production told Deadline of the Starz series based on Neil Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel. “It’s a big book.”
With that top of mind, the premium cabler is searching to find a showrunner for a third season, I hear.
