Composer and flautist who began his career with the Hastings Municipal
Orchestra, then joining the "Buffs" regiment band in 1916 where he soon
became Band Sergeant. A student of the Royal Military School of Music,
in 1930 he became bandmaster (the appointment lasted a decade and a
half) of the Queen's Royal Regiment in 1930. Following thirty years of
service he retired from the British Army in 1946, he began a 22-year
career as director of the London Metropolitan Police Band. His
compositions include over thirty marches and over forty concert
selections. Some of his best-known and most familiar works include
specialized production (mood) music.
