Netflix recently added Survivor Season 32 to its streaming library, introducing a new group of people to the Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty cast, including the season’s winner Michele Fitzgerald. Michele is a bit of a controversial figure in the Survivor community. But despite the pushback she received after the season 32 finale aired, Michele has continuously proved why she deserved to win in the years following her first television appearance.

Over the past 40 seasons of “Survivor,” men have won 25 times while women have only prevailed 15 times. (See the “Survivor” winners list.) The past six cycles in a row have all resulted in male champions, with the most recent woman winner being Sarah Lacina in Season 34. With the Season 41 finale set for Wednesday night, all eyes are on whether one of the last two females on the island (Erika Casupanan or Heather Aldret) can break the curse this year. Or will one of the three men prevail instead?

(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the Season 40 finale of “Survivor.”)
The 40th season of “Survivor,” a.k.a. “Survivor: Winners at War,” came to a close with a supersized finale on Wednesday that saw one competitor walk away with a $2 million check and become the long-running CBS competition’s newest two-time “Sole Survivor. “
Tony Vlachos was the player with the honor of winning “Winners at War,” having previously been crowned the champion of Season 28, “Survivor: Cagayan.”

It seems like only yesterday the 20 returning “Survivor” champions returned for an epic clash in “Winners at War,” but now we’ve already reached the Season 40 finale. Heading into Wednesday’s three-hour event, only five castaways remained in the running to win the $2 million prize: Ben Driebergen, Denise Stapley, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina and Tony Vlachos. But there were 14 players living on the Edge of Extinction who were itching for their chance to return to the game: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, Yul Kwon, Wendell Holland, Adam Klein, Tyson Apostol, Sophie Clarke, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Jeremy Collins and Nick Wilson. The 20th contestant, Sandra Diaz-Twine, quit after being voted out on Day 16.

Last week after Sophie Clarke‘s shocking blindside, the Top 8 contestants of “Survivor: Winners at War” were determined: Jeremy Collins, Ben Driebergen, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Denise Stapley, Tony Vlachos and Nick Wilson. With so much infighting and mistrust between the remaining players, there was no telling who might be eliminated this week. So how did everything play out, and whose torch did Jeff Probst snuff at the end of the hour?

“I’m captive right now, but I’m plotting a way to escape this wretched prison that they call the Edge of Extinction,” declared Wendell Holland just moments after his elimination from “Survivor: Winners at War.” This former winner of “Survivor: Ghost Island” was voted out of the newly merged Koru tribe by a 9-3 vote over Adam Klein. “Once I get out of here I’m gonna do what I need to do,” Wendell promised in his end-of-show exit interview. “The war is not over.”

The highly anticipated “Survivor” return challenge is coming up soon, which means one of the inhabitants at the Edge of Extinction is about to re-enter the game for a shot at winning the $2 million prize. With Sandra Diaz-Twine calling it quits last week, there are currently eight voted-out castaways living on Extinction Island: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Tyson Apostol, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow and Yul Kwon. However, thanks to Season 40’s new fire token twist, both Boston Rob and Natalie might have an edge — pardon the pun — in the return challenge because of their growing piggy banks.

Oh, we had such hopes. Only one person can win “Survivor,” so 95% has to lose, but some lose harder than others. Some players look great on paper but utterly flame out once they start actually playing the game. Others do well for the majority of the season but end up choking in the end. Then there are those who play fantastic games on their first seasons but are not able to replicate that success on future iterations. Above, tour our guide of the most spectacular flameouts in “Survivor” history.
People like Amanda Kimmel and Russell Hantz have done well in multiple seasons, getting to Final Tribal Council not once but twice. But neither was able to convince the jury to vote for them to win in the end, with Amanda in particular seeming like a frontrunner to win only to flounder like a fish out of water in front of the jury.

Sandra Diaz-Twine was just voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War” in the one of the most cutthroat reality TV blindsides of all time. After a confident Sandra gave her hidden immunity idol to Denise Stapley in exchange for her fire tokens, Denise ended up using the idol to send home the “Survivor” Queen. “And now the question will be, how much gas does Sandra have in her tank?” host Jeff Probst wonders in his weekly recap video (watch above). “Does she want to fight to get back in?” he asks aloud. Um, Jeff, what exactly are you suggesting here?!

After six episodes of “Survivor: Winners at War,” two castaways are tied with a leading four fire tokens apiece: Michele Fitzgerald and Natalie Anderson. (See the updated list of “Survivor” advantages.) These wooden coins can be used to purchase things like food, comfort and advantages, as seen this week when Tyson Apostol bought peanut butter with his newly acquired fire token. Michele and Natalie are now essentially billionaires in the game of “Survivor,” which makes them huge targets going forward.

Heading into Wednesday’s double elimination episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out were Adam Klein and Parvati Shallow. These two placed at the bottoms of their Yara and Sele tribes, respectively, following last week’s tribe swap, while Sandra Diaz-Twine was the likeliest to go home from Dakal. So who were the seventh and eighth castaways to have their torches snuffed by Jeff Probst?

When the sixth episode of “Survivor: Winners at War” airs Wednesday, March 18, the Edge of Extinction inhabitants will receive yet another clue to acquire fire tokens. Four of these voted-out players already have fire tokens from their log challenge, while the other two (Tyson Apostol and Rob Mariano) are hoping to restart their piggy banks. In CBS’s latest sneak peek video (watch above), puzzle master Boston Rob believes he’s uncovered something in the clue that will lead him to the advantage — is he right?

Rob Mariano may be one of the most well-known “Survivor” players of all time, but that wasn’t enough to save him from an early exit on “Winners at War.” As Gold Derby predicted, Boston Rob became the sixth person voted out of Season 40 during Wednesday’s tribe swap episode after he found himself on the new Yara beach with two former enemies (Ben Driebergen and Adam Klein) and two complete strangers (Sarah Lacina and Sophie Clarke). After having his torch snuffed, Rob bequeathed his two fire tokens to his best buddy Parvati Shallow, bumping her up to four total. That number now ties her with Natalie Anderson, making Parvati and Natalie the richest players in the game.

Heading into Wednesday’s fifth episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out were Rob Mariano, Adam Klein and Parvati Shallow. On this week’s episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 15 champions still in the game will face the first tribe swap of the season, an event that can save those at the bottom of their current tribes or even tank the chances of another player at the top of theirs. Meanwhile, for the five eliminated players currently inhabiting the Edge of Extinction the tribe swap means nothing. Instead they’ll continue to find opportunities to earn fire tokens, the only glimmer of hope they have as they await more information about how and when exactly they’ll get the chance to re-enter the game.

As “Winners at War,” the 40th season of the landmark reality TV competition series “Survivor,” continues to heat up we take a look back at some of the sexiest women to play the game in its first 20 years (see above). “Survivor: Winners at War” host Jeff Probst is standing up for Adam Klein, a current Season 40 castaway who’s gotten so much hate online he’s had to temporarily disable social media. Adam’s troubles began when his alliance’s plan to blindside Parvati Shallow backfired after Adam spilled the beans to Rob Mariano. I never thought I would write this sentence about “Survivor: Winners at War,” but the action on the Edge of Extinction was far more compelling than what was happening on the mainland this week. When this limbo land where voted-out castaways could get a second chance to return to the game was first introduced on Season 38, there wasn’t much going on save for some lame clues to finding advantages on the barren island. About the most interesting thing was when Reem Daly, the first resident to wash up on the shore, would berate the newly arrived contestants who had voted her out previously like some kind of sea witch.
Even more distressing to longtime fans was the fact that the winner of that season, Chris Underwood, was the third player to be voted out. Because of the twist, however, he managed to rejoin the action, participate in the finale...

As Gold Derby predicted, Tyson Apostol was voted out of “Survivor: Winners at War” in this week’s fourth episode. This former champion from “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” was anticipating an “easy vote” at the Dakal camp after everyone said they’d be on board with Nick Wilson going home. After three episodes and four tribal councils on “Survivor: Winners at War,” the 40th season in 20 years of the landmark reality TV competition series, the Dakal tribe has established itself as the dominant tribe, forcing the opposing Sele tribe to vote out three players while only having to sacrifice one of their own (Amber Mariano). In part two of the season premiere Dakal went to their only tribal council where they stuck mostly together as a tribe to eliminate Amber, leaving Kim Spradlin-Wolfe in the dark about their decision to split the votes between the two women.
Now, heading into Wednesday’s fourth episode, nine players remain at Dakal: Tyson Apostol (“Blood vs. Water”), Sophie Clarke (“South Pacific”), Sandra Diaz-Twine (“Pearl Islands” and “Heroes vs. Villains”), Wendell Holland (“Ghost Island”), Yul Kwon (“Cook Islands”), Sarah Lacina (“Game Changers”), Kim Spradlin-Wolfe (“One World”), Tony Vlachos (“Cagayan”) and Nick Wilson (“David vs.

“Survivor: Winners at War” sees 20 winners of the game return to duke it out. It’s the greatest crop of contenders the show has every seen. And in my “Battlelines” recap each week I will diagnose its casualty and declare both who I think won the episode’s battle and who is best positioned to win the war. Please feel free to give your thoughts in the comments below.
Casualty
Ethan Zohn: ‘Out of Africa’ and out of the tribe
The biggest delight of this season was the return of “Survivor: Africa” winner Ethan Zohn. He won the game longer ago than any returning player – 18 years (37 seasons). Since then he has been a survivor in the truest sense of the world. He returns to the game after a hard-fought battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Seeing Ethan play the game again with humor, fun and positivity was such a joy.

Rob them exposed Adam’s plot to the other “new schoolers,” which is when they instead voted out Ethan Zohn as a way of punishing Adam for going against them. Watch the sneak peek video above.

Right now, the returning castaway who has risen to every challenge facing her so far on “Survivor: Winners at War” is Natalie Anderson (see above), the first player to be banished to the Edge of Extinction. When the member of the blue Sele tribe first arrived on the then-deserted isle, she found a hidden immunity idol that was good for three tribal councils at the very tippy-top of a steep mountain path — a testament to her strength, smarts and agility. She sent it to Sandra Diaz-Twine of the blue Dakal tribe, who purchased it with a fire token (a kind of currency this season).
Natalie also showed off her smarts after she figured out that an advantage was hidden in the island’s water well long after Amber Mariano, the second player to decide to wait out her fate on the Edge of Extinction, walked away from it. Natalie sent...

Much like “Survivor” island, the internet is pretty much full of only two things: snakes and rats. Unfortunately, one “Winners at War” castaway in particular has experienced so much poison that he’s temporarily disabled social media: Adam Klein. “The intensity of comments online can be overwhelming to those that choose to play the game, and I am not immune to that,” this winner of “Millennials vs. Gen X” wrote on Instagram. Adam added he’s “choosing to focus” instead on his family and his father’s upcoming wedding, and then urged the “Survivor” community to “be kind to each other.”

After two decades of buildup, “Survivor: Winners at War” finally debuted February 12, 2020 on CBS. In the two-hour season premiere, 20 fan-favorite champions returned for a shot at a record high prize of $2 million. The first two voted-out players were Natalie Anderson and Amber Brkich Mariano, but they’re hardly the only ones to feel the agony of having their torches snuffed by Jeff Probst. If you’re looking for Season 40 spoilers on every elimination so far, you’ve come to the right place. Tour our photos above to see the updated “Survivor” bootlist.
For this all-winners installment the controversial Edge of Extinction is back in play, aka the deserted island where ousted players live in isolation and wait for their chance to return to the game proper. After winning “Survivor: Africa” and competing in “Survivor: All-Stars,” fan favorite contestant Ethan Zohn had to step away from the game for 16 years because of his cancer diagnosis. Now in remission, Ethan finally returned in “Survivor: Winners at War” … only to be voted out in the third episode when his “old school” alliance with Rob Mariano and Parvati Shallow was targeted by the “new schoolers.” “I’m not afraid of Edge of Extinction, because I’ve been to the Edge of Extinction having to go through cancer,” Ethan declared in his post-show exit interview. “I think I have the mental strength to get through it.”

Thanks to the Edge of Extinction twist, Survivor: Winners at War is still anyone’s game. As a result of last week’s messy tribal (which sent Survivor: Guatemala champ Danni Boatwright to the Edge), it’s looking like the “new school” players are particularly out for blood. If Sele loses another immunity, will Adam be able to jump-start an underdog revolution and blindside Boston Rob or Parvati? This season, anything’s possible and you can bet someone’s got a blindside brewing.

After three eliminations on “Survivor: Winners at War,” the red Dakal tribe had a slight nine-to-eight numbers advantage over their blue Sele counterparts. Heading into Wednesday’s episode, Gold Derby readers predicted that the castaways most in danger of being voted out next were Ben Driebergen of Sele and Tyson Apostol of Dakal. Did their predictions come true? And which Edge of Extinction inhabitant found this week’s all-important advantage that they sold to a player still in the game?

‘Survivor: Winners at War’ battlelines: ‘Stealth Bomber’ crashes while Adam Klein wins tribal battle
“Survivor: Winners at War” sees 20 winners of the game return to duke it out. It’s the greatest crop of contenders the show has every seen. And in my “Battlelines” recap each week I will diagnose the casualty of the week and declare both who I think won the episode’s battle and who is best positioned to win the war. Please feel free to give your thoughts in the comments below.

In Wednesday’s third episode of “Survivor: Winners at War,” Amber Mariano ditches her Edge of Extinction co-inhabitants Natalie Anderson and Danni Boatwright when they’re out hunting for clues. “Amber’s figured out something,” Danni proclaims in CBS’s preview trailer (watch above). We then see a shot of Amber running along the beach, with Natalie shouting, “Amber, where are you going?!” Has Amber found the location of the next advantage that she must sell to someone in the game for one fire token?

In theory a game of “Survivor” featuring only champion players should mean that the two tribes start on an even playing field, but after three episodes of “Survivor: Winners at War” it seems the Sele tribe players are on a quickly sinking ship. Plagued by a does-it-or-doesn’t-it-exist divide between “old school” and “new school” players, Sele has failed to come together to win two of the three immunity challenges in the game so far, forcing them to attend tribal council where they voted to send Natalie Anderson and Danni Boatwright to the Edge of Extinction.
Now, heading into Wednesday’s fourth episode, eight players remain at Sele: self-identified “new school” players Jeremy Collins (“Second Chances”), Ben Driebergen (“Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers”), Michele Fitzgerald (“Kaoh Rong”), Adam Klein (“Millennials vs. Gen X”) and Denise Stapley (“Philippines”) and self-identified “old school” players Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”) and...

In quite possibly the most entertaining “Survivor” deleted scene of all time, Ethan Zohn realizes he’s “not the greatest liar in the world” so he goes to Parvati Shallow for advice. “Parvati and I needed to role play a little bit,” Ethan admits in the hours leading up to Danni Boatwright‘s elimination from “Winners at War.” When he pretends to be nervous about lying to Danni, Parvati slaps his face and scolds, “Bad Ethan!” (watch above). Legendary two-time “Survivor” winner Sandra Diaz-Twine has a unique strategy in “Winners at War,” and it’s sure to ruffle a few feathers. When “Survivor: Winners at War” premieres Wednesday, February 12 on CBS, the 20 returning champs will be divided into two tribes: red Dakal (see above) and blue Sele (see below). How the tribe designations might affect the game remains to be seen, but there are several things to note about who ended up on what beach. For starters, married couple Rob Mariano and Amber Mariano have been understandably split up — he’s on Sele, she’s on Dakal. Of course, that still may not matter when it comes to their fellow players seeing the pair as the ultimate threat.

On “Survivor” Season 40 there may be 20 “Winners at War” with one another, but each of them comes to the island with their own identity, hurdles and legacy to fight against.
