A few years ago, after James Cameron finished the first Avatar film, his kids called a family meeting to deliver some notes on his parenting. Some of the kids, who today range in age from 15 to 32, had attended the Muse school in Calabasas that Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, founded in 2006. At Muse, students are encouraged to provide feedback to their teachers, and now the Cameron brood was emboldened to apply that same technique at home.
Cameron is known in the film business for getting what he wants when he wants it, from release dates to budgets to the right to mount elaborate oceanic expeditions on a studio’s dime. The director admits he has sometimes brought his hard-driving style home, and there are moments when his fathering has resembled the Robert Duvall character in The Great Santini, the relentless Marine colonel patriarch.

Who knew that in this dark hour of the climate crisis hope would arrive in the form of a 563-page novel by a sci-fi writer best known for a trilogy about establishing a human civilization on Mars? But alas, that’s what Kim Stanley Robinson – the author of 20 books and one of the most respected science fiction writers working today — has given us with The Ministry for the Future. It’s a trip through the carbon-fueled chaos of the coming decades, with engineers working desperately to stop melting glaciers from sliding into the sea,...

“Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Vince Gerardis is setting up a production company in Italy, Variety has learned.
The new venture, dubbed Ciao, or Creatività Italiana Americana Organizzata, is the latest move from the Miami-based executive, who specializes in packaging and selling large-scale, world-building film and television projects based on literary properties.
Gerardis is in talks with an Italian publisher for a deal that would give Ciao access to a range of Italian literary talent, with an eye toward “establishing an interesting and fresh business model from what I’ve learned over the years of representing authors,” he told Variety. The Rome-based company is developing four projects and will focus on Italian IP that has the potential to travel. “It’s ‘Italy first,’ with a global view,” he said.

At the start of 2020, approximately 3,784 years ago in subjective time, evidence of extraterrestrial life within our own solar system would have been treated as a mind-blowing revelation, but now it seems like something perfectly plausible within the parameters of this surreal mire of a year we’ve had. Nevertheless, astronomers have detected signs of what they believe could indicate the presence of life on Venus.
The planet was previously considered uninhabitable due to its inhospitable conditions, including an atmosphere consisting almost entirely of carbon dioxide, a surface pressure equivalent to 3,000 feet underwater on Earth, a landscape regularly reshaped by violent volcanic activity and a mean surface temperature of 867ºF (464ºC). Despite this, the detection of phosphine in the atmosphere has led scientists to believe that life could be forming in the vast clouds of sulfur that obscure the planet from view.
