Genai was born in Manhattan during the famous blackout of 1965 and grew up in Darien, Connecticut. She is the wife of deep sea explorer and Alvin submersible pilot Bruce Strickrott. Genai was named after Ingrid Bergman's character in the movie 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness' and her father's office was used in the movie 'Kramer vs. Kramer' in the scene where Dustin Hoffman gets his new job. She majored in theatre and communications at The University of New Hampshire where she performed a one woman show based on a Eudora Welty short story. As an occasional screenwriting editor, Genai worked with Jonathan Demme on the documentary film 'The Agronomist'. She is a maritime spokesperson of considerable skill and a United States Coast Guard auxiliarist in the state of Florida.
