Carl Martin (Rodney Carl Martin, Jr.) was born in West Texas in 1950 to
Rod and Elaine Martin. In 1962, his family moved to Maryland in the
metropolitan D.C. area, where his father worked in the space industry.
After graduating Richard Montgomery high school, in Rockville, Maryland, he moved with the family to Los Angeles. In the mid-1970s Mr. Martin began his career as a freelance graphic artist. His space themed paintings were on display at Griffith Observatory (3 of which remain part of the observatory collection). He also had a one-person showing at the Allegra Design Gallery at the Bonaventure Hotel. He was even filmed by local TV news at a gallery opening on Wilshire Boulevard, where he had set up his easel, canvas and paints.
In the early 1980s, he worked at Brilliant Films and became friends with George E. Mather. In 1984, Mr. Mather called Carl Martin in on a film project (Quest) to work with renowned designer, and two-time Academy Award-winner, Saul Bass. Mr. Martin produced four paintings for that film.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, Mr. Martin switched careers to computer science, gaining a bachelors degree, summa cum laude. And, in 2007, he moved to the Philippines to marry Juvy Baldado and to take up his passion for writing.
