Question: What’s the latest word on the Voltron feature film that you introduced at last year’s Comic-Con? Kopla: It’s currently in development with Relativity Media. Josh Oppenheimer and Thomas Donnelly are working on the script and they have some cool ideas. It’s going to be a big action adventure flick and we’re really excited about it. We have some talented producers on it. Relativity Media announced last year that they had optioned the rights for a feature film based on the 5 brave space explorers who find robot lions which form the galactic defender known as Voltron. [Coming Attractions' reporter Thurston McQ had the exclusive opportunity to visit the offices of World Event Productions where the next Voltron animated TV series and live-action movie are being developed. This is his report. -- Patrick@CA]
The Visit
If you are one of the growing number of visitors to Voltron.com, you will have seen the website’s recent announcement: a new Lion Force animated series is coming to NickToons.
This announcement comes at a time when fans are both hopeful and fearful. Like fans of any genre offering, it is not enough for them to see the world and characters they have grown to love revived. They also want to see it done right. Voltron’s fans have seen other franchises revived, and they have borne witness to—and in many cases, have shared in—the disappointment of those franchises’ fans.
I count myself among these Voltron fans. I was a charter member of the post-Star Wars action figure boom, and as such I had dedicated the majority of my toy box’s space to the headquartering of my personal mix of begged-for and traded-for G.

With budgets on the rise and total investments for studio pictures creeping toward the half a billion dollar mark, Hollywood needs a sure thing. So we hear terms like, “built-in audience” or “high-concept” or “ancillary revenues.” The summer movie schedule becomes a long list of sequels, prequels and remakes in the studios’ quest to recoup their investments. The success of the Transformer franchise has them scrambling. Cartoons from the 80’s are now the hot property. The studios are scouring the countryside for the next Transformers. I’m hearing names that I haven’t heard since I was eight, He-man, Thundercats, Go-Bots, Silverhawks and the Mighty Orbots. But one of the most popular cartoons from the 80’s is still out there, Voltron.
I remember the years 1984-1986 fondly as “the Voltron years.” I lived, breathed, ate and slept Voltron. I believe I was 10 when I discovered the company that owns Voltron,...

Thanks to our insider here in St. Louis, Jeremy Corray the Creative Director of World Events we get this exclusive quote from the ‘Voltron’ team about the live action film:
You know, not much to say right now other then pumped to be working with the team behind Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and more. I mean, these guys produced 12 Monkeys, Three Kings, they just know how to match talented filmmakers like Nolan and David O Russel to create incredible takes on genre material. You know, Scooby Doo has its critics but once again taking “cartoon” material (like Voltron) and turning it into blockbuster movies. Look at Get Smart. These guys know how to repackage this stuff up to exceed fans expectations. Doesn’t really matter as anyone who produced The Dark Fricken Knight can come party in Voltron-land anytime. Most of all I can promise you no leg humping or racist robots.
