The eighth episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves showed us the final confrontation between Esau Pierce and Bass Reeves, and I will add that it was a hell of a showdown. The series tried to capture what Bass had gone through over the years and how he had been impacted by his circumstances, which changed him drastically. Jennie could no longer recognize what Bass had become, and Bass needed to deal with Esau to be able to understand that himself. Before Bass had become a Deputy U.S. Marshall or a free man for that matter, he was a slave, but destiny had something else planned for him. He went through some harrowing situations but ultimately became a free man and started his family. Now that the miniseries has come to an end, it’s clear that dealing with Esau Pierce was the most challenging task of Bass’ life, which is...

The seventh episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves finally reached the cusp of where it was always intended to reach. This was never a simple tale that was going to show us the conquests of the legendary figure of Bass Reeves, the first colored Deputy U.S. Marshall, but a story of how the resolve of upholding your duties inevitably collides with the responsibility to question the status quo as a citizen. Bass had done his duty diligently over the years, catching criminals in Indian Territory, Arkansas. But was the ‘law’ that he was working forever cognizant of why there were people like Esau Pierce who were pure evil as far as Bass was concerned? In a country at the time when slavery had just been declared illegal, Bass really had to think about what it would take to make some people understand that it shouldn’t matter if it’s illegal; it’s inhuman,...

The fifth episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves didn’t jump years ahead to show us Bass as an aging fellow. This was expected as each episode had been fast-forwarding to a new period in Bass’ life, but the fifth episode picks up from where the previous episode had ended. Bass was given the duty of getting his prisoners to Fort Worth for their trial, and he successfully managed to do so. The episode focused on Bass missing out on family life due to his job and his kids not getting to spend enough time with their father. Jennie was worried that Bass might be getting too obsessed with the job. Bass knew it but couldn’t overlook the responsibility. The stressed Bass learned something at the end of the episode that just might make him break his ethical code for the first time.

Two years after the events of Lawmen: Bass Reeves Episode 3, Bass Reeves is now well on his way to becoming a legendary lawman in the Wild West. He had the tactics, the courage and the sheer will to impose the rule of law on Native territory. Murderers, robbers and all other delinquents had taken cognizance of him and it was here in the fourth episode that we see him getting deeper into hell, at the risk of becoming a monster himself after facing so many monsters. Lawmen: Bass Reeves Episode 4 focuses primarily on the time when Bass was out working with ex-robber Bill Crow, collecting himself an impressive collar. Embodying the spirit of the law, Bass was now on the verge of not knowing right from wrong and leaving it all up to the Almighty.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is turning out to be a series that is interested in a very impressionistic portrayal of Bass, the heroic and lawful figure of the Wild West. Each episode focuses on a period, or rather, a specific event in Bass’s life, showing us an important stroke of the brush that helps complete the final portrait. The previous episodes had portrayed Bass’ tortured beginnings and his meeting with Deputy Linn, which gave him a chance to become a deputy himself. Lawmen: Bass Reeves Episode 3 focuses on the event that made Bass learn that this was truly a harsh world and that upholding the law wasn’t as ‘clean’ a duty as he thought it was. There were tough decisions to be made. He was even warned at one point that if he became a deputy, he wouldn’t survive for long, and if he did, he would become...
