- Michael Spellman was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Livonia where he attended Churchill High. He excelled in drama through Churchill's Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) program.
He went on to attend New York City's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating from the school's Los Angeles campus in 1999. After furthering his skills at the University of Oxford's Balliol College, he made his way back to the states to formally pursue his career in acting.
He made his film debut in the award-winning indie production How to Ace an Intervention (2005) and in his break-through television role, he played recurring character, Dr. Jim Babinski in the long-running series, ER. His first role in a major release was in Charlie Wilson's War (2008) directed by Mike Nichols, starring Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman. His extensive television work can be seen in episodes of How I Met Your Mother (2009), Extant (2015) and Hawaii Five-0 (2018).
Spellman is also quite active on the Los Angeles stage, where he has appeared in numerous productions including the LA Weekly Award winning "The Grapes of Wrath" and the West Coast premiere of "Epic Proportions" both at the highly respected, West Coast Ensemble. He is also a member of The Actors' Gang theatre where he was seen in "The Seagull" (directed by Georges Bigot) and "Mephisto" (directed by Tim Robbins).

- He is third cousin, two generations removed, of aviator, Charles Lindbergh (b. 1902-1974). Their common ancestors were Charles H. Land (b. 1847-1919) and his wife, Evangeline (Lodge) Land (b. 1850-?) who were the grandparents of Lindbergh, and the great-great-grandparents of Michael Spellman.
