As reporters rushed to post many of the juicy anecdotes and scorching analysis from Mary Trump’s new book this past week, they might have missed that the memoir also is a media critique.

Yes, you can finally watch Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” at home. And yes, it’s just as ingenious, energizing and brilliant as you’ve been hearing for the last several years — inspiring everyone from musicians to theater artists to former Trump official John Bolton. But the filmed version of the 2015 Broadway megahit, shot with the original cast in 2016 and premiering this week on Disney+, is a very particular work.
For one thing, it’s less a musical film than a recorded stage performance, like those concert films you see on HBO. Shot at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016, this “Hamilton” does not attempt to escape or transcend its stage roots — even in the ways that recent live TV musical productions like “Grease Live!” and “The Sound of Music” have by moving within various sets on a vast soundstage or studio lot.

Trump had it all: Home-field advantage, an adoring audience, a pitcher who was determined to make him look good by serving up nothing but softballs, and yet again the president struck out. Somehow, in the midst of a campaign season, Trump could not name a single thing he’d prioritize if American voters are kind enough to give him another term in office come November.

On Tuesday, Stephen Colbert gave people reluctant to read John Bolton’s cash-in Trump tell-all “The Room Where It Happened” a very good reason to finally check it out: Having it sung by another famous Bolton, legendary soft rock crooner Michael Bolton.
The joke is exactly what it sounds like — a fake trailer for the “exclusive audiobook” of John Bolton’s book, “also sung by Bolton… Michael Bolton,” the narrator of the clip tells us. Cue up the very real and very excellent voice of Michael, singing along to some of the more well-reported details from the book set to smooth rock music. Examples include:
“Trump begged president Xi to buy soybeans to help him win re-election.”
“Trump formed a pattern of fundamentally unacceptable behavior that eroded the very legitimacy of the presidency.'” (This is a direct quote.)

Bolton, of course is promoting a book about his time in the West Wing, and Colbert goes after him for for his previous support of a man Bolton has called “unfit” to be president.
“Whatever we think of him,” Bolton explained of Trump, “he’s not going to be a Democrat subject to the pressure — especially now — of the Left. I bought that argument in 2016.”
An exasperated Colbert responded, “No, he’s going to be subject to the pressure of Vladimir Putin! And Xi Jinping! He’s a person willing to sell out the interest of the American people for his own reelection.”

Donald Trump’s family is attempting to block a tell-all memoir set to be published next month by the president’s niece.
Trump’s brother, Robert Trump, filed a request for a temporary restraining order in a New York court on Tuesday, The New York Times reported.
The book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, is to be published by Simon & Schuster on July 28 and is expected to describe unflattering details about the family. In the advance publicity, the publisher said that Mary Trump “shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.”

The 2020 Espys drew 482,000 total viewers across ESPN and ESPN2 combined on Sunday, when the show aired on cable instead of ABC for the first time in five years.
In an admittedly flawed comparison, last year’s show on the broadcast channel, hosted by Tracy Morgan, drew 3.9 million viewers.
The prior low for the Espys came in 2011, when the show drew 1.98 million total viewers. This was less than one-quarter of that audience.

The comedy fallout over President Donald Trump’s less-than-perfect rally Saturday continued apace tonight as Trevor Noah weighed in. During his monologue for The Daily Social Distancing Show, the host fairly reveled in the embarrassingly low turnout that reportedly (gasp!) made Potus furious.
“Aww, poor Trump,” Noah said. “Somebody who was born into wealth and never suffered a single consequence for his actions, this dude just cannot catch a break.”
So why was the turnout so low? Was it, as the Trump campaign claims, because protesters blocked the entrances? “The most likely explanation for all of those empty seats in that arena is that as much as some people love Trump, they also love not dying from coronavirus.”
Then there’s that other explanation that has been circulating since Saturday night: that TikTok-using teenage fans of K-pop banded together to troll the -in-chief by ordering blocks of tickets that they never planned to use.

I didn’t enjoy my weekend with John Bolton. His new book, The Room Where It Happened, is blunt, partisan, thorough, and unpleasant — much like the man. Bolton’s righteous arrogance oozes in nearly ever sentence. His contempt for anyone who doesn’t share his reactionary world view is profound and on full display.
Though the average reader’s eyes will glaze over at his exact and, at times, excruciatingly detailed recounting of this or that summit, historians and foreign policy wonks will certainly welcome the pulling back of the White House drapes.

The nightmare that is America’s reality show president naturally brings with him a Fox News TV character/national security advisor. Yep, Fox News’ own Tucker Carlson accompanied President Donald Trump on his trip to North Korea to meet with the tyrant Kim Jong-un. And, Trump left behind his actual national security advisor John Bolton.
Tucker called into Fox & Friends on Sunday morning to give us an update, and to put all of our minds at ease, telling the cable news audience that: “To lead a country, it means killing people.

As tensions with Iran have escalated, President Trump wanted to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. But, he knew Congress won’t approve his decision, so on Friday the president announced he was going to declare a national emergency, allowing him to sell the foreign governments around $8 billion worth of weapons. Included in the sale were precision guided bombs, as well as other types of bombs and ammunitions and related equipment. The president also ordered 1500 troops to the Middle East, according to the New York Times.

We’ve got the new poster for A Little Bit Zombie, the upcoming zombie comedy from Casey Walker. The poster was designed from Tom Hodge, who you should know from his poster designs for Hobo With a Shotgun and The Innkeepers.
Tom Hodge had the following to say about the new poster: “This was the first time i got to really swing my design bat at comedy. After discussing some ideas with Casey, we both seemed to be coming from the same direction – we really wanted the poster to be every bit as visually entertaining as the film is funny, by creating something that was epic, totally Ott for the subject matter.
So this poster design really came to be a love letter to the whole fantasy art school of the 70′s and such great artists who inspired me growing up, like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and John Bolton.

New York -- This Christmas, Ralphie can skip the air rifle and poke his eye out with jazz hands.
A musical stage version of the classic film "A Christmas Story" has begun a five-city tour with hopes that it might stick around a little longer, like a tongue on a frozen flagpole.
"We're hoping it's not too bumpy of a ride on the road, but it's a good birthing process and it's going Ok so far," said lyricist Benj Pasek in an interview from Detroit, where "A Christmas Story, The Musical" is playing until Nov. 27.
The show has more than a dozen catchy songs written by Pasek with composer Justin Paul – titles include "Red Ryder Carbine Action Bb Gun" and "A Major Award" – and a book by Joseph Robinette.
Both the film and musical are based on writer and radio-tv personality Jean Shepherd's semiautobiographical story of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker's...

Former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton weighed in the during the aftermath of the Norway bombings on Friday night with Martha MacCallum. Birth certificate, schmirth certificate. The Yale Cultural Recognition Project's theory suggests that die-hard birthers will hold firm to their political philosophies in the face of incontrovertible evidence--until they're given a way to save face.
Anyone eager to confront genuine issues plaguing the nation--from staunch lefties to sober leaders on the political right--got a moment of respite today with the release of President Barack Obama's birth certificate. But the moment quickly passed. Despite even far-right conservative leaders such as Arizona Governor Jan Brewer condemning so-called "birthers" over their heartfelt belief that Obama was born outside of the U.S., the most hardcore of them are still unmoved by the very document they've demanded to see.
How could this be?
Psychologists have, in fact, known for a while that skeptics will harden their existing conspiracy theories in the face of contradicting evidence. But here's how to knock your Trump-loving uncle back...

In the turbulent center of the Venn diagram involving President Obama's multilateral foreign policy, open government mandates, and Middle-East unrest is Alec Ross, the Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. From asking Twitter to delay down-time maintenance during the 2009 student uprising to courting programmers for Africa, Ross's office has been tasked with coordinating the monumental logistics of a new philosophy that embraces global interdependence. Why do pols like Rick Santorum with no real shot at the White House keep running? The lure of TV celebrity makes even the most unlikely prospect press ahead for a while, writes Jack W. Germond.
You may or may not have noticed that Rick Santorum is running for president. He has been to New Hampshire 12 times in the last few months and has been similarly attentive to Iowa and South Carolina. He is telling his fellow Republicans he is the real goods if they want a true believer on issues like abortion and gay marriage.

So far, however, the most you can say about Santorum is that he is a contributor to the candidate clutter that now seems to plague presidential campaigns every four years-an abundance of self-motivated candidates with no visible rationale for their ambitions or constituency for their campaign.

John Bolton: ‘Obama Is Too Smart, Too Sophisticated, And Too Nuanced To Believe In Victory In Libya’
Former Ambassador to the Un John Bolton appeared with Sean Hannity last night and may have a strange problem on his hands in case he decides to run for the Republican nomination for President. Unlike most politicians who backpedal from statements that can be overly inflammatory, Bolton might regret saying something many would interpret to be a compliment to President Obama.

It's always strange when one cable news outlet is compelled to report on the news being made by its competition. Case in point? The following report by CNN's Joe Johns on yesterday's announcement by Fox News that they were suspending the contributor agreements with Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum because of the increasing likelihood that they will be running for president. Johns continues in his report to ask why other Fox News contributors -- namely Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and John Bolton -- haven't been suspended.

Fox News announced yesterday the suspension of their employment agreement with contributors Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum as each ramps up their campaign for President. And with other potential candidates and Fox News employees (Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee and John Bolton) being warned by the network that "as soon as each of them shows some serious intention to form an exploratory committee" similar action will be taken, one thing is clear: Fox News' strategy to secure so many compelling newsmakers was a very smart business decision, and one that we might likely see more of in the future.

Fighting off a boycott and scrambling for a headliner, the biggest annual conservative gathering takes place this week. Eight things to watch at Cpac.
The right descends on Washington this week, as thousands of activists pour into the nation's capital to attend the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. It's a heady time-with Republicans having seized control of the House, closed the gap with Democrats in the Senate, and now gearing up for a chance to reclaim the White House in 2012. But all is not well at the old-line American Conservative Union, which throws the annual party.
