In early May, we travelled to Nashville to spend a couple of days with Mick Mars and hear about his bitter departure from Mötley Crüe. Mars stepped away from the touring unit in late 2022 after 41 years in the group he co-founded. He’d been suffering from the debilitating bone disease ankylosing spondylitis for decades, and life on the road simply became too painful to endure. In his telling, they used this as an excuse to violate legal agreements and deny him his share of band proceeds. The matter is currently...

Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx has opened up about the ongoing legal saga involving the band’s longtime guitarist Mick Mars.
In a new interview with Planet Rock, Sixx doubled down on a recent assertion made by the band’s manager Allen Kovac that Mars was being subjected to elder abuse by his legal representatives. According to Sixx, the Crüe express no ill will toward Mars, but are looking to move forward with current plans involving replacement guitarist John 5, including a 2023 world tour (tickets available here) and recording new music.
“It’s a nice time [for Mötley Crüe] and it’s kind of inspired us to write a little bit,” Sixx said. “We love our history, we’re very proud of everything we’ve done. We’ve always been really supportive of Mick no matter what Mick was going through. We’re just happy with where we’re at right now.”

The unfortunate dispute between Mötley Crüe and their former guitarist Mick Mars has gotten pretty ugly, with the band’s manager now accusing Mars’ representatives of “elder abuse.”
As previously reported, Mars recently sued Mötley Crüe, claiming his financial cut of the band’s profits was severely reduced and that he was let go from the band despite his desire to remain a member upon retiring from touring. He also snuck in a jab about bassist Nikki Sixx playing to pre-recorded tracks during the Crüe’s live shows.
Mötley Crüe then hit back, with one of their lawyers stating, “Retiring from touring is retiring from the band.” A statement further claimed that Mars’ playing had diminished significantly and that he was being manipulated by his representative into taking legal action against his longtime band. To which Mars responded, “I carried those bastards for years.”

When Bob Donnelly entered the music business as a lawyer in 1976, payola, or pay-for-play, was standard in the radio industry.
“When I first started, it was hookers and blow [to help get songs on the air],” Donnelly says. “Then that disappeared and it became sports tickets, trips, sneakers and the like. It changed over time so that it became much more sophisticated. At the end of the day, the labels still wanted hit records and the radio stations wanted cash.”

Thanks to the press and success around Mötley Crüe’s raucous Netflix biopic “The Dirt,” the “world’s most notorious rock band” are releasing a 14-hour-plus audiobook version of the 2001 New York Times best-seller on June 25 through HarperAudio and Dey Street Books. Motley Crue “tossed around” the idea of narrating the tome themselves, but, “it just didn’t feel right for us,” explains bassist and co-founder Nikki Sixx, who read the audiobook for his own “Heroin Diaries” autobiography. Mötley was interested in utilizing actors from the film — who include Pete Davidson of “Saturday Night Live” fame — but it proved too difficult logistically, so respected voice actors read “The Dirt” audiobook (Sebastian York narrates Sixx’s part). The band, says Sixx, is “super happy” with the results.
He adds that the group pushed for an audiobook when “The Dirt” was first released some 18 years ago, but in the pre-streaming audio era,...

One month after the release of Mötley Crüe biopic “The Dirt,” the band is experiencing a Netflix bump on multiple platforms, including downloads, streams and book sales. In addition, the group gained new subscribers on YouTube and saw its socials pick up droves of followers on Facebook and Twitter.
Here’s how the numbers break down: In the streaming arena over the last 27 days, Motley Crue songs were consumed 73.8 million times on Spotify and nearly 30 million plays were registered at Apple Music. That’s a spike of 599% on Spotify and 1,081% on Apple Music, according to the band’s management, which notes similar streaming gains at Deezer and Amazon. Song sales also surged, with iTunes reporting 176,008 purchases, or a 1,330% rise when compared to the average 27-day period in the previous 12 months.
The audience flocked to the group’s socials, too. Following the film’s March 22 premiere, Facebook followers grew by 900 percent and Twitter by 600 percent.

The new, eagerly awaited Motley Crue biopic, based on Neil Strauss’ best-selling 2001 book, “The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band,” premieres today on Netflix after a seemingly endless 13 years in development hell.
Those anticipating “a fun ‘80s music movie,” as Crue bassist Nikki Sixx puts it, will inevitably be stunned by the final product, a dark-laced cautionary tale that balances the thrill of making it as a rock god against the downside of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll excess. “The Dirt” takes the “A Star Is Born” theme of the perils of fame and convincingly sets it in the late ‘70’s/early ‘80s punk/metal milieu of Hollywood, complete with a recreation of the Crue’s legendary party house just up the block from the Whisky, where one of its memorable scenes takes place.

It’s taken eighteen years for Motley Crue biopic The Dirt to go from print to screen. Long-time manager Allen Kovac, who is exec producing the Netflix feature film, tells Deadline why it took so long to adapt the memoir and how they wanted to create “Boogie Nights-meets-Goodfellas” set in the debaucherous world of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.
The film, which debuts on the Svod platform on March 22, tells the story of notorious Sunset Strip glamrockers Motley Crue – Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars and is based on Neil Strauss’ book The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, which was published in 2001.
It’s a raucous story that includes rampant drug abuse – Sixx was famously pronounced dead after a heroin overdose – manslaughter – Neil killed his passenger in a 1985 drunk driving accident – and the film opens with a graphic oral sex scene involving Tommy Lee.

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its Motley Crue biopic “The Dirt” — based on Neil Strauss’ best-selling history of the legendarily bad-behaved ‘80s metal icons — and it looks like the film pulls no punches in terms of the band’s famously sordid history.
In this two-minute trailer, we get glimpses of singer Vince Neil’s 1984 car wreck that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle (as well as the death from cancer of Neil’s 4-year-old daughter several years later), bassist/songwriter Nikki Sixx’s heroin addiction, guitarist Mick Mars’ age and degenerative bone disease, and Tommy Lee’s marriage to TV star Heather Locklear and all-around unhinged behavior.
Industry insiders will probably be tickled to see “SNL” star Pete Davidson as the band’s A&R man, Tom Zutaut.
While much of this territory has been covered in the VH1 “Behind the Music” on the group, judging by the trailer the...

If you thought the story of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was nuts, “The Dirt” and its look at the formation of Mötley Crüe will really rock you.
Mötley Crüe was one of the most notorious ’80s hair metal bands in the country, arguably known more for their antics offstage and their lavish, outrageous performances than their music. “The Dirt,” a new music biopic based on the salacious autobiography by the band and Neil Strauss, taps into that insanity.
“The fans? They’re dying for some anarchy. So let’s give it to them,” one of the bandmates says in the film.

When Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan passed away in a London hotel room on January 15, the 46-year-old was due to enter the recording studio the very next to lay down a vocal track for L.A.-based hard rock supergroup Bad Wolves’ version of her 1994 hit, “Zombie.”

As many have heard we had to cut our set short by 4 songs last night due to Vince be in severe pain on stage.. He was doubled over on his dressing room floor 5 minutes till show time and was told by the promoter to not even play but Vince said he couldn't do that to the fans. I've seen Vinnie go onstage with broken bones, his voice completely blown out and torn ligaments but he never ever cancels...Just like an athlete you sometimes have to play through the pain but last night it became to excruciating.

A judge has dismissed most of the lawsuit against Steven Tyler's attorney, Dina Lapolt, that alleged she botched her client's contract negotiation to return as a judge on American Idol. The lawsuit was brought in October by Kovac Media Group, formerly Tyler's management company. Lapolt was claimed to have fallen short in deal negotiations, costing Tyler a $6 million- $8 million deal and prompting him to exit the long-running singing show. Former American Idol judge Steven Tyler said today that he “very much wanted to end the relationship” with the ex-managers that are now suing his lawyer. The legal declaration (read it here) and increased war of words from the Aerosmith frontman came Monday in response to an $8 million lawsuit Kovac Media Group/Tenth Street Entertainment filed October 11 against Dina Lapolt. In that suit, Kovac claims that Lapolt ruined Tyler’s chances to get a big raise on Idol — costing them commissions and their client. But Tyler, who is not named in the initial suit, says otherwise: “It is an understatement to say that I was very unhappy with the services and conduct of Allen Kovac. Among other things, he was disrespectful and rude to my business associates, insulted and verbally abused my fiancé, my lawyer, my family, my assistants, and my accountants,” he said in the declaration filed in La Superior Court.
