“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” after getting axed by NBC, may be getting a second life at Roku.
Roku, which has been bulking up its original programming slate, is in discussions with Lionsgate Television, the producer of the musical dramedy, for a movie special bringing back the original cast including star Jane Levy, Variety confirmed.
Roku and Lionsgate reps declined to comment.
Sources cautioned that while Roku and Lionsgate are in talks, there’s no deal signed. The project under discussion would be a two-hour movie special that would hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays. While other reports have said Roku would have the option to pick up “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for a new season, a source familiar with the talks said that’s not on the table and that the movie deal would be a one-off.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is nearing a comeback, though it may be a brief one.
The musical comedy, which was canceled earlier this year by NBC after two seasons, is closing in on a deal with Roku for a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap. The project is being eyed for the holidays.
According to TV Line, which broke the news, if the movie performs well, a potential third season could be in the cards. It is not yet a done deal but is in advanced negotiations. The entire main cast is expected to return, though not all deals are done.
Reps for Roku and Lionsgate, which produces the show with Universal Television, declined to comment. Peacock decided against ordering a third season after it was canceled in May.

The options on the cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, headlined by Jane Levy, expired earlier this week, and they have not been extended, I have learned.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lead studio Lionsgate Television has been looking to find a new home for the show since NBC canceled the series three weeks ago after two seasons and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.
I hear conversations are still ongoing, with various options to continue the story of Zoey Clarke explored — series, miniseries or a movie. While none is believed to be close to reality, if any progresses, Lionsgate would need to make new deals with some or all of the Season 2 regular cast, which included Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen.

NBC has canceled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons, the network said Wednesday.
The show, a co-production between Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, will be shopped to other outlets. However, according to an individual familiar with the situation, NBC’s sister streaming service Peacock has already passed on a third season.
The news comes after the Austin Winsberg-created musical dramedy wrapped its second season back in May.
“In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following,” a Lionsgate spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” stars Jane Levy as a software developer who discovers she has the ability to hear other people’s innermost thoughts via musical numbers. Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen also star.

The cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist might have performed their last number. NBC has opted not to give a third-season renewal to the musical dramedy with a passionate following, which topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll for a second consecutive year.
The decision comes three and a half weeks after the series, headlined by Jane Levy, aired its Season 2 finale. As Deadline reported last month, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a middling linear Live+Same Day ratings performer with an outsized digital footprint, had been in consideration for a pickup by NBC sibling streamer Peacock. I hear that Peacock, the streaming home of Zoey’s first two seasons, ultimately opted not to proceed with a third season.
In addition to being a digital phenom, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist also has gotten awards recognition. Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the series with Universal Television, will be mounting an aggressive...

NBC has ordered a second season of musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.

Of the other NBC bubble series, the network this week canceled Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector and Perfect Harmony. Manifest is still very much in contention as NBC and producer Warner Bros. TV are discussing a deal, while Indebted is not expected to continue.

Brie Larson is undoubtedly one of the biggest actresses in the industry right now. Back at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, she debuted her directorial debut in Unicorn Store, a quirky tale that mixed comedy and drama in equal measure. Since then, the movie has been in limbo, ultimately getting picked up by Netflix in a larger overall deal with Larson. Over the weekend, the flick hit the streaming service, offering the masses another opportunity to see Larson in new material, hot on the heels of the uber success of Captain Marvel. Though nothing to rave about, this debut is a confident and charming one, proving that there’s little Larson can’t do. The film is a dramedy about a potential influx of happiness into a woman’s life. Kit (Larson) has a strong artistic streak, but it’s not one easily understood. When art school doesn’t work out,...

With Captain Marvel crossing the $300million mark at the box office, Netflix has capitalized on Brie Larson's booming popularity to acquire her 2017 directorial debut. Unicorn Store is a coming-of-age comedy that happens to also star buddy and co-Avenger Samuel L. Jackson. The Netflix millennial coming-of-age dramedy sets Brie Larson as a storyteller to watch both in front of and behind the camera.
Brie Larson's directorial debut, Unicorn Store, is a coming-of-age film for a generation that is "coming of age" later and for longer than generations before. It is a sympathetic exploration of the "Peter Pan Syndrome" firmly placed in the millennial experience, and without the judgmental undertones (and sometimes overtones) of films with a similar subject matter but far less empathy for the contemporary young adult experience.
While The Verge calls Unicorn Store "an odd companion piece to Captain Marvel," in part because of the Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson reunion, the Netflix film pairs much better with 2012's indie Safety Not Guaranteed or 2004's 13 Going On 30, aka coming-of-age dramedies with a magical surrealist bend. If you're looking to make an event of it, Unicorn Store also pairs well with Pop Tarts,...

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2017, Netflix has smartly waited to release Brie Larson’s directorial debut Unicorn Store in a post-Captain Marvel world. Larson plays Kit, flunked out of art school student and now forced into the mundane reality of temp work that lacks the color and spark of her former world. She is presented with an opportunity by The Salesman, who can sell her a unicorn, a lifelong dream of hers since childhood. With an added helping of sparkles and rainbows, Netflix has now released the first trailer. Jake Howell said in his Tiff review, “Like student-written high school theatre, with its lack of coordination and characters that never transcend caricature, there’s an earnestness to Unicorn Store that passes as inoffensive naiveté.”

“The most grownup thing you can do is fail at things you really care about.” “You need to learn to love yourself.” That’s two solid pieces of advice given to Brie Larson’s lead character in Unicorn Store, the Captain Marvel star’s directorial debut that hits Netflix next month. But then she receives a letter in an envelope, instructing her to go to a mysterious store where she’s greeted by a purple-suited Jackson.
“You have come to the store and I am the salesman,” he proclaims. “We sell what you need.”
Larson admits that all she’s ever really wanted is a unicorn, and one of the beautiful mythical beasts shows up on a big screen at the store. Her decision to buy the unicorn doesn’t sit well with her parents, played by Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford, who wonder...

Where would one hope to find a unicorn? At the Unicorn Store, of course.
That’s what Brie Larson says in the trailer for her upcoming Netflix film, “Unicorn Store,” which she also directed. And who better to purchase a unicorn from than Larson’s “Captain Marvel” co-star, Samuel L. Jackson, dressed all in pink and with a massive afro?
“You need to love yourself,” Jackson tells Larson’s character, Kit. “Get out there and show us what you can do.”

Brie Larson has already conquered the box office this year with the record-breaking success of “Captain Marvel,” and she’s set to do it all over again at the end of April with the release of “Avengers: Endgame.” In between those massive Hollywood tentpoles, Larson will return to her indie roots with the release of her directorial debut “Unicorn Store.” The quirky comedy-drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and will finally get an official release thanks to Netflix.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads: “After failing out of art school and taking a humdrum office job, a whimsical painter (Larson) gets a chance to fulfill her lifelong dream of adopting a unicorn.” Larson has assembled a strong ensemble cast to play opposite her in front of the camera, including her “Kong: Skull Island” and McU co-star Samuel L. Oscar-winner Brie Larson has signed a deal with Netflix alongside A Star is Born producer, Lynette Howell Taylor, for a two movie deal. Netflix has them lined up for Unicorn Store, which will be Larson’s directorial debut, and Lady Business, which will be the next film Larson will star in after Unicorn, and which she will also likely direct.
According to Deadline, Lady Business “is based on a Fast Company article by John Paul Titlow, and tells the true story of two young female entrepreneurs, Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer, who had to invent a third male company founder in order to be taken seriously in the business world.”
And Unicorn Store “is based on a script penned by Samantha McIntyre, and centers on a woman who moves back in with her parents, and receives an invitation to a store that will test her ideas of what it really means to grow up.

Brie Larson & Lynette Howell Taylor Set Two Films At Netflix; Larson To Next Star In ‘Lady Business’
Exclusive: Oscar winning actress Brie Larson and Best Picture-nominated A Star Is Born producer Lynette Howell Taylor have made a two-picture worldwide rights deal at Netflix for films produced by Howell Taylor’s 51 Entertainment. Netflix has acquired Unicorn Store, which marks Larson’s directing debut, and Lady Business, which will be the next film that Larson stars in and likely directs. Unicorn Store will premiere on Netflix April 5, a month after the March 9 release of Larson’s Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel.

Thanks to giant franchises – like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically – we’ve now become accustomed to the ‘Lack Of Female Directors Explanation’ that’s so often trotted out by senior production executives: ‘Hiring a woman director is a priority for us, but we have to find one who wants to do it, and has experience before we hand them a giant movie.’ This is a frustrating response to calls for more women at the helm, not least because the same criteria doesn’t always apply to male directors hired by these studios. Now, though, it seems that Captain Marvel star Brie Larson could be the perfect answer to that standard delaying tactic.

‘Unicorn Store’ Review: Brie Larson’s Directorial Debut Is a Quirky Mess with a Heart of Gold — Tiff
A millennial fairy tale that’s very confused about who actually belongs to that demographic cohort (aren’t we all), Brie Larson’s “Unicorn Store” is too adult for kids, too childlike for adults, and too muddled for the motley lot of misfits and dreamers who just want to think different. It’s a movie that sustains its strained plot with a huge heart — a movie that redeems its empty characters with a terrific cast. Most of all, it’s a movie that reminds you why “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” opted not to have a subplot about sexual harassment.
Larson, a creative force of nature who also stars in and produced her feature-length directorial debut, plays an aimless twentysomething named Kit. As a child, Kit was obsessed with unicorns. As an adult, Kit is still a child. We’re told that she dreams of being an artist (her ambitions...

Fearlessly treading into potential snowflake territory and the perennial American indie theme of Being True to Yourself No Matter How Out of Step with the Mainstream You Are, Brie Larson embraces her inner sparkly child as the star and helmer of Unicorn Store. Beginning with its straight-dealing, truth-in-advertising title, this is a film that takes candy-colored metaphors seriously. But it’s also a deadpan comedy whose droll glance at conformity is heightened by the masterfully off-center contributions of Joan Cusack, Bradley Whitford, Hamish Linklater and Mamoudou Athie.

But what she’s always wanted to do is direct. For Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, moving behind the camera wasn’t the sort of career change she envisioned only after years in the business — it was something she grew up doing. Her own opportunities just had to catch up to her first.
“I’ve just made movies my whole life,” Larson recently told IndieWire. “Every summer, I would write and direct a film that I would direct my cousins in. It mostly took place in the garage, and I would just hang up different sheets and use our storage containers as different heights for things. I had a disco ball that I put outside the garage door, and when I turned it on, it meant we were rolling.”
She added, “I guess this has been part of my way of expressing myself for a very long time.”

Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson has long been eager to get behind the camera — she’s already helmed a pair of short films, including the Sundance award-winning “The Arm,” which she made alongside Jessie Ennis and Sarah Ramos — and her feature directorial debut, “Unicorn Store,” is reportedly set to bow sometime later this year. And now the film has snagged the backing of a brand new production shingle, one that sounds very much in line with Larson’s own outspoken and equality-driven attitude.
Long-time producer Lynette Howell Taylor has now launched a new production banner called 51 Entertainment, with a focus on filmmaker-driven content, and “Unicorn Store” is set up as its first feature. Larson directed the film from Samantha McIntyre’s script, and she also stars in the feature alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, Joan Cusack, and Martha MacIsaac. The film also boasts a crew that was mostly made up of female professionals.

Jackson is among those cast in Brie Larson’s directorial debut, which is described as an indie comedy about a woman who moves back in with her parents and encounters a store that “will test her ideas of what it really means to grow up.” Aside from being the Nick Fury to her future Captain Marvel, Jackson and Larson are both in the upcoming Kong: Skull Island. Unicorn Store also brought on Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford, upping their beloved character actor quotient. When we got word earlier this fall that Viola Davis would be joining Steve McQueen‘s adaptation of the crime drama Widows, based on the British television series, there was still open leading roles for one black woman, one white woman, and one Latina woman. Now, one of the them has been filled for the film scripted by McQueen and Gone Girl‘s Gillian Flynn.
Variety reports that Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony Award for Best Actress in The Color Purple this year, has joined the crime drama, with McQueen reportedly thinking of her for the film since he began to work on it. The film, which we’ll hopefully see by late 2017, centers on four widows who come together to finish a robbery after their crooked husbands are killed on the job.

Brie Larson, who was recently confirmed in the role of Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios' upcoming film, is set to make her directorial debut with a new indie comedy called Unicorn Store. She will also star in and produce the film.

2016 has been an awfully big year for Brie Larson. After breaking out with the phenomenal Room at the end of last year, she went onto pick up an Oscar for her performance alongside numerous other honors and awards. Not too long after that, she was announced to be starring in Captain Marvel and also has a role in Kong: Skull Island that we’re starting to get excited about.
Not content to simply rest on her laurels, Larson is continuing to stack on the projects, this time lining up Unicorn Store as her directorial debut.
