Exclusive: Candle Media’s Exile Content Studio is partnering with acclaimed Colombian journalist Daniel Coronell and director Gaz Alazraki (Father Of The Bride) to produce a scripted feature about the incredible recent news story of the four children, including a baby, that survived a plane crash and 40 days in the Amazon Rainforest before being rescued by Colombian special forces.
A story this remarkable was unlikely to go unnoticed by the industry for long, but this is a quick turnaround even for Hollywood.
Earlier this month, world media was captivated by the story of the four children – Lesly, 13; Soleiny, 9; Tien Noriel, 4; and Cristin, 1 – who were found alive in the Amazon after a rescue operation that searched more than 1,600 miles of dense forest.
The children survived the plane crash that killed their mother, the pilot and the only other adult on board, and then got through the dense jungle, alive with jaguars,...

Diego Boneta was 15 years old when he was close to starring in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” “They did the audition in Mexico City,” the “Father of the Bride” actor tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “They flew me to L.A. to test. It was my first feature film audition and my first audition, period! … It was between me and Ben Barnes.”
Barnes landed the role, but the experience inspired the Mexico City-raised Boneta to move to Los Angeles to pursue a Hollywood career: “I was trying to get auditions for Mexican films for years, and they would not see me because they’re like, ‘No, you don’t look Mexican enough.’”
Boneta first made a splash in 2012 starring opposite Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough in director Adam Shankman’s musical romance “Rock of Ages.” “Tom took me under his wing,...

Exclusive: Father’s Day weekend was the ideal launchpad for Warner Bros’ Andy Garcia-Gloria Estefan romantic comedy Father of the Bride, which wound up being the biggest HBO Max movie premiere ever in its four days, specifically for a title that was exclusively made for the streaming service.
Father of the Bride was the No. 1 title across HBO Max around the world in its first four days since it launched on Thursday, June 16. The film also ranked among the top 10 most-watched title launches on HBO Max to date in Mexico, based on its first four days.
The fresh angle in this Latino take on Father of the Bride: The bride’s parents, played by Garcia and Estefan, are on the verge of a divorce.

In the reboot of “Father of the Bride,” now streaming on HBO Max, costume designer Caroline Eselin knew that she wasn’t going to emulate either of the previous incarnations of the film when it came to creating the wedding dress worn by Sofia (Adria Arjona). Instead, she drew inspiration from the new movie’s Miami setting and the city’s vibrant style.
This time, Andy Garcia is the title character who must come to grips with the marriage of his daughter and is determined to pay for her wedding. The film, directed by Gaz Alazraki, revolves around a sprawling Cuban American family and the well-to-do Mexican American family Sofia marries into.
Sophie’s sister Cora (Isabela Merced) is a budding fashion designer tasked with helping to create the wedding gown. Says Eselin, “We did things through her lens when it came to Sophie’s dress and the bridesmaid dresses.

For Gaz Alazraki’s remake of “Father of the Bride,” now streaming on HBO Max, the beloved classic about a daughter’s impending wedding day was reimagined with some twists — it moved from Connecticut to Miami, and from a white family to a wealthy Cuban-American brood led by Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan, parents to Adria Arjona. Diego Boneta portrays the groom, a lawyer from a Mexican family.
For the score, Alazraki turned to composer Terence Blanchard, whose credits include “Mo Better Blues,” “Da 5 Bloods” and “BlacKkKlansman.” As heard on the track “Saving Wedding Montage” (listen above), Blanchard provided his own update — a score with his signature jazz sound.
With the film set in Miami, how did you approach the score?
When I first read the script, I was wondering if they wanted me to do a Latin-based score because the film has some great Latin artists. But, that’s not what Gaz wanted.

Andy Garcia joins Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin as the latest stubborn dad reluctantly taking his daughter up the aisle in a mostly likable Latino update
The earnest, mid-budget studio comedy gets another gentle jolt back to life this week with HBO Max’s sleek remake of Father of the Bride, a mostly charming throwback to a time of big music, big speeches and big kitchens. It’s a story told twice before, once in 1950 by Vincente Minnelli with help from Spencer Tracy and then decades later with Nancy Meyers ushering Steve Martin, but it’s a dynamic we’ve seen far more times than that, the over-protective father struggling to let his beloved daughter go, especially when she’s heading all the way up the aisle.
It’s such a familiar set-up that our minds instantly go to sitcom territory – dad with wagging finger, daughter with hands on hips – and so to its credit,...

Billy Herrera, a successful architect and the title character of the newest iteration of Father of the Bride, is played with terrific comic understatement by Andy Garcia. He has some of the gruffness of Spencer Tracy in the hit 1950 movie of the same name — the first screen translation of Edward Streeter’s novel — and none of the mugging that Steve Martin brought to the 1991 remake. But like both their characters, and pretty much every dad in every American comedy ever made, Billy needs enlightening about the way things are in the world today. When he says, “I came to this country with nothing,” which he does every chance he gets, his wife and daughters roll their eyes and wait for the moment of self-mythologizing grandeur to pass.
The shocking reality that kick-starts his awakening is news that his older daughter is getting married...

The wedding industrial complex has intensified since novelist Edward Streeter wrote his wryly observational satire “Father of the Bride” in 1949. So, too, has the titular patriarch’s panic that his daughter’s nuptials will expose him as a substandard provider. Director Gary Alazraki’s uneven adaptation — the third in seven decades after Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin reached for the migraine medication — casts Andy Garcia as the beleaguered patron whose ego outshines his child’s simpler desires. Audiences looking to shed a tear need not RSVP.
Garcia plays Billy Herrera, a Cuban exile — not immigrant, he stresses — who has built himself an upper-class life in Miami. Decades ago, he scaled the ladder of success from carpenter to architect. That struggle is the bedrock of his personality, and by the fifth time screenwriter Matt Lopez has him bring it up, Billy’s family looks ready to hit him with a hammer.

Revamped with a Latino cast, the 2022 iteration of “Father of the Bride” harnesses the generational and cultural divide between immigrants and their children to put a spin on this romantic comedy premise 30 years after the release of the previous version starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton (and 72 years after Spencer Tracy walked Elizabeth Taylor down the aisle).
With new gravitas, this venerable property serves as an excellent vehicle for veteran Cuban-born actor Andy Garcia to savor a lead role that feels custom-made for him.
This is Mexican filmmaker Gaz Alazraki’s first feature since his 2013 mega hit “We Are the Nobles” (“Nosotros los Nobles”) broke box office records in his home country. Alazraki went on to create Netflix’s first Spanish-language episodic series, the soccer comedy “Club de Cuervos.” That screenwriter Matt Lopez is an American-born Latino and the director a Mexican national making strides in Hollywood make this reboot...

1. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (available December 23)
Why Should I Watch It? Two big reasons: First, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, created “Trollhunters,” an animated event series about a teenager who discovers a mystical amulet that unveils a secret civilization of trolls beneath his hometown. If the Oscar nominee himself isn’t enough, there’s another creative force — in addition to the impressive voice cast of Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Charlie Saxton — to pay attention to: Said teenager is voiced by Anton Yelchin, in what’s being billed his final role. After debuting two episodes at New York Comic-Con in October, del Toro said he never even discussed replacing Yelchin. “We didn’t go into a meeting,” del Toro said. “We didn’t have a conference. […] He was a great guy to work with, he was proud of what he did, we were proud of what he did.

Season 2 begins with Isabel trying to lead the team to victory.
“It’s one thing to want to be president, but it’s different if you try to screw me over,” Chava tells his sister in the trailer.

¡Hurra! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has renewed its first Spanish-language original series Club de Cuervos for a second season.
The series, a Mexican dramedy from Gary Alazraki and Michael Lam, focuses on the personal drama and politics that follow the death of a local football club owner. Its first season premiered on August 7, 2015. The second season will begin filming in 2016, and star Luis Gerardo Mendez will be an executive producer.
From The Hollywood Reporter:
Club de Cuervos has helped the streaming service establish itself in new markets — particularly Mexico. Further working in Club's favor is that 25 percent of the show's viewers are U.S. subscribers.
Sources say the streaming service has also upped the show's production budgets as it looks to capitalize on Mendez's popularity as arguably Mexico's biggest box office draw. The actor...

For a series whose opening moments include both a hookers-and-blow extravaganza and a scene in which one main character coldcocks the other, “Club de Cuervos” ought to be more fun than it is. This Mexican dramedy–Netflix’s first Spanish-language original series–chronicles the inner workings of a wealthy family that owns a beloved but struggling soccer team. But although the show has a few juicy moments, the overriding feeling is that, at least after two episodes, there may not be enough delicious scheming or bitchy backbiting to justify a binge watch. Co-created by filmmaker Gaz Alazraki, whose 2013 comedy “Nosotros Los Nobles...

The first Fenix Iberoamerican Film Awards, highlighting and celebrating cinema made in Latin America, Spain, and Portugal as well as applauding the professionals involved was inaugurated by Cinema23 this October 30 and held its closing night party in México City's Jumex Museum, named after the Lopez family’s fruit juice empire, and commissioned by Eugenio Lopez, the dynastic scion whose intention is to leave an edifice to Mexico City that dignifies his family name. This 21st-century prince is the sole patron of the new Museo Jumex, Latin America’s largest contemporary art museum, designed by the British architect David Chipperfield and just across the street from hourglass-shaped Museo Soumaya, opened in 2011 by the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú to display his own collection. Worth a trip to Mexico alone just to view the private Jumex collection of Mexican art, to attend the spectacular closing night party topping off the new annual, independent award ceremony which took place at the iconic 1918 Teatro de la Ciudad was an experience of a lifetime.
After an exclusive dinner for the nominees around 11 Pm, the great celebration began. Inspired by Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, one of the most important holidays in Mexico, the party was decorated with elements inspired by this tradition such as "papel picado," and walls decorated with skulls. The vibrant orange color of hundreds of cempasúchil flowers (Marigolds) adorned the hall where more than a thousand guests, among them many film professional, singers and other important figures from across Iberoamerica, attended the celebration organized by Grupo Modelo the brewery in Mexico now owned by the Belgian-Brazilian company Anheuser-Busch InBev, which holds 63% of the Mexican beer market and exports beer to most countries of the world, whose export brands include my own favorite beers, Corona and Pacífico. I was proud to be invited to attend and to be part of the advisory council of Cinema23, founder of this annual Fenix Awards celebration of the art of cinema along with the comcomitant commercial success of Iberoamerican cinema.
Attending the awards and the post-award party were actors such as Alice Braga, Ana de la Reguera, Ana Claudia Talancón, Alfonso Herrera, Bárbara Mori, Brandon López, Camila Selser, Cecilia Suárez, Elena Anaya, Ernesto Alterio, Erick Elías, Ilse Salas, Irene Azuela, Johanna Murillo, José María Yazpik, José María and Pedro de Tavira, Juan Manuel Bernal, Karen Martínez, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Maribel Verdú, Martha Higareda, Maya Zapata and Ximena Ayala; filmmakers Fernando Eimbcke, Gary Alazraki, Jonás Cuarón, Lorenzo Hagerman, Manolo Caro, Natalia Beristáin and Rigoberto Perezcano; musicians Leo Heiblum, Kevin Johansen, León Larregui and Sergio Acosta from rock band Zoé and Leonor Watling, Jesús Navarro, vocalist of pop band Reik; socialites as Rafael Micha, Jorge Gorozpe, Memo Martínez and Max Villegas; fashion designer Oscar Madrazo and jewelry designer Mariana Villarea. They and the other attendees enjoyed a night in which cinema was the most important guest.
In the venue's lower level, Sonido Apokalitzin's beats enhanced the experience with cumbias, salsas and iconic songs from several Iberoamerican countries. Monterrey DJ Toy Selectah also entertained the guests with his musical selection. Upstairs, Sergio and Andres from famous rock band Zoé delighted everyone with their music just before they enjoyed Julian Placencia's DJ set.
With this event the first edition of the Fenix Iberoamerican Film Awards came to an end. The event brought together hundreds of figures from the Iberoamerican film community who celebrated the well-deserved recognition to their work and dedication. At the same time the event served to strengthen relationships among the diverse industries and will continuously help forge the region's identity.

Netflix has ordered its first Spanish-language original series: a satire from Mexican director Gaz Alazraki that centers on what happens behind-the-scenes in professional fútbol. Alazraki most recently directed "Nosotros los Nobles," a.k.a. "We are the Nobles," which broke box office records and ranks as one of Mexico's most successful films of all time. In a statement released by Netflix, Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos expressed his confidence in the Alazraki who is at the helm of the series alongside his "We are the Nobles" co-producer Leo Zimbron. "Gaz has the disruptive vision and creative storytelling we were looking for in producing our first original series in Mexico," said Sarandos. Although NBC has expanded into the Latin American television market via Telemundo, the Netflix announcement is unprecedented, given the fact that the show will be distributed to all users on the Netflix platform, rather than to a specific demographic...

Buenos Aires-based International Sales Company Film Sharks will be present in Berlin with an incredibly eclectic lineup that includes animation, some of the most successful Latin American films of the past year, an even an Oscar Foreign Language submission.
Save Oz
Directed by Alberto Mar
A new animated film from Anima Estudios, the Mexican animation company that produced the successful Top Cat film, which has gross close to $14.7 million worldwide. Based upon the classic L. Frank Baum books, the film will infuse the well-known universe with its own characters and an original storyline. FilmSharks will be showing a Promo Reel in Berlin as the film is still in production expecting to be finished in the next few months.
The Mystery of Happiness (El Misterio de la Felicidad)
Directed by Daniel Burman
Santiago and Eugenio are more than friends, they are life long business partners. They understand each other without words, they care for each other, they need each other. One day Eugenio disappears without leaving any clues behind. Santiago immediately notices his absence, but only realizes what have happened when Eugenio's wife, Laura, lost and hopeless assures him that Eugenio has left. Santiago and Laura begin a journey in order to find him and end up discovering that they prefer to stay together in this quest rather than finding out where he is or what has happened to him. A film about love, but goes beyond it, it pushes boundaries, it explores the idea of loyalty and estrangement , and it definitely puts dreams over long lost promises.
Of Horse and Men
Directed by Benedikt Erlingsson

Read Carlos Aguilar's Review Here
A country romance about the human streak in the horse and the horse in the human. Love and death become interlaced and with immense consequences. Punctuated with humor, Of Horses And Men is an affectionate, yet unflinching portrait of a remote valley community as seen from the horses' perspective.

However, the appearance of his brother Pepe, the most popular narcocorrido singer, forces him to do one last job: to save his brother from the powerful man that commands half of Mexico.
Remora
Written by Andres Gelos
In a dying planet, beneath a thick ice shell, a huge submarine city travels across the pan-ocean. Its citizens prepare themselves for the exodus to the new world. Ratio, a seabed driller, uncovers the plan to sacrifice the first ships, which will fracture the ice shell so that only the ship carrying the society's elite will manage to go through it. After being accused of being a traitor, Ratio is rescued by Lania. She is an earth-bound, she belongs to a society of outcasts who live hidden inside a volcano. Ratio and Lania attempt to attach a ship carrying earth-bounds like a remora to the exodus ship in order to escape from the ice world in search for their destiny at the opposite end of the galaxy: a small blue planet with only one sun and only one satellite, where dinosaurs still prevail.

The literal translation of the Spanish word fresa is strawberry but in Mexico it's used to describe rich kids who wear fancy clothes and go to prep schools, basically the equivalent of a yuppie. Fresas have a very specific manner of expressing themselves. Imagine a Valley girl speaking Spanish and switch the word "like" with "osea" -- that's exactly how they sound.
There are lots of different words in Mexico used to describe the monied class. The offspring of the uber-wealthy and elite, whose parents are politicians and businessmen are called juniors. The guys are easily identifiable: slicked back hair, unbuttoned designer shirts, and expensive sunglasses. The women carry fancy handbags and it's not unusual for one to be accompanied by a bodyguard.
Nosotros Los Nobles, one of Mexico's highest grossest films of all time, makes fun of spoiled, entitled fresas and juniors who live in Mexico City and use their parents' credit cards to pay for everything. The comedy broke box office records when it opened in Mexico earlier this year and is now playing at several AMC theaters throughout the U.S.
After the death of his beloved wife German Noble, a construction magnate of immense wealth is left to care for his ungrateful (adult) children who have never worked a day in their lives. Barbara, his daughter who goes by Barbie, is the ultimate fresa. She acts like a princess and expects everyone to treat her like one. Her brother Javier is a total junior. He drives a shiny SUV and uses his two black cards to buy his friends drinks. The youngest, Charlie, is a long-haired, moustachioed hipster who loves yoga and all things transcendental. None of them work but all of them spend their dad's money and rack up huge bills.
In order to teach them a lesson German fakes bankruptcy and tells his children they have nothing left. It's a brilliant ruse: phony police storm their mansion, luxury cars are repossessed, black cards cancelled, and cell phones shut off. As they flee from the police Barbie asks (in her Valley girl/fresa accent), "Me puedes explicar por que nos estan quitando todo como si estuvieramos en Venezuela?" (Can you explain why they are taking everything away from us, as if we were in Venezuela?)
The family hides out in a rundown, dusty, abandoned, old house that belonged to their grandfather. The only clothes they have are the ones they are wearing and they barely have any cash between them. German announces they have to do something they've never done before, get jobs. Javi ends up driving a pesero (privately owned mini-bus), Barbie is forced to wear a bar maid costume while serving food at a cantina, and Cha finds work at a bank. The formerly wealthy siblings are forced to interact with non-rich people or what’s known as la prole (short for proletariat).
The director of the film, Gaz Alazraki, says he intended to make a Hollywood film in Spanish. He succeeded. It's a funny, decently acted, mainstream film with likeable characters and a story that moves forward at a perfect pace. Even for a movie snob like me who regularly turns up her nose up at Hollywood blockbusters, it was satisfying and enjoyable.
In between the wisecracks and quips it makes some pointed observations about the divide between social classes in Mexico but stays away from really polemic issues. It's not pushing any boundaries but absolutely mocks the affluent. In tough economic times laughing at snotty people with luxurious lifestyles provides a much needed release.
The success of the film in Mexico is no surprise. In a country where almost half the population is considered poor the masses are acutely aware of social class. Inequality is rampant and resentment against the small oligarchy who controls the majority of the wealth is high. It's not hard to figure out why. What may be considered a modest amount of money in the U.S. can buy you an opulent lifestyle in Mexico. The moderately wealthy have live-in maids. The really rich people have bodyguards, drivers, and reside in neighborhoods that resemble Beverly Hills. When a Starbucks opened in Mexico City the yuppies flocked there, it now has valet parking.
In stark contrast to the highly visible cleavage between the rich and poor in Mexico ask anyone in the U.S. what part of the social strata they belong to. Everyone, even the ones who are struggling, will tell you they are middle class. Class consciousness is not really a thing here (besides the tiny window provided by the Occupiers). I am curious to see how Americans will receive this movie. Will a story that depicts extreme differences in income resonate with the middle-class? At the very least it might be novel. How often do gringos get to see images of Mexicans who look white and live in the lap of luxury? Well, unless they watch the Spanish channel. Then it would be no surprise.
Nosotros Los Nobles opened November 1, 2013 in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, San Jose, Phoenix, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Charlotte.

Mexican star Gonzalo Vega, Karla Souza and director Gary Alazraki bring their Mexican hit, Nosotros Los Nobles to American cinemas and they’re talking to us about the feel-good Spanish comedy that feels like a Hollywood movie.
Spanish-language comedy Nosotros Los Nobles (We are the Nobles) became Mexico's highest-grossing film of all time earlier this year, surpassing the previous record holder, 2002's El Crimen del Amaro" starring Gael Garcia Bernal. The film out-grossed some of the year’s biggest Hollywood releases, including Man of Steel, Oz The Great and Powerful, World War Z, The Wolverine, Pacific Rim, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, among other Hollywood box office blockbusters.
