Another classic video game is getting the movie treatment: Ubisoft’s 2003 cult favorite “Beyond Good and Evil,” with “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” director Rob Letterman attached to direct at Netflix, two individuals with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The film will be a hybrid of live action and animation, and Netflix is currently in early development on the project.
Released in 2003, “Beyond Good and Evil” is a sci-fi action and adventure game set in the year 2435. The story follows Jade, a young photojournalist who searches for the truth about an ongoing war and an alien threat on her remote home planet, suspecting that military leaders may be collaborating with the aliens.

Before you read any further, it’s best to get this out of the way: No, you won’t be playing “Beyond Good and Evil 2” anytime soon. The prequel to the 2003 cult hit from legendary game designer Michel Ancel has made tremendous progress since its announcement last summer. But one year later, developer Ubisoft Montpellier is only now starting to reveal how you’ll actually play the game.
In a private meeting at E3 2018, the studio gave an overview of the ambitious action-adventure RPG with the help of evocative concept art that hung on a wall. “Beyond Good and Evil 2” takes place at the end of the 24th century, in a universe where space pirates are one of the few factions brave enough to rebel against the oppressive rule of the corporations. You play as a space pirate (who you can customize in different ways), and it’s your job to find Dakini,...

Ubisoft gave fans a sneak peek at “Beyond Good & Evil 2’s” gameplay during a Twitch livestream on Thursday.
During the broadcast, senior producer Guillaume Brunier, director Michel Ancel, and associate creative director Emile Morel shared the pre-alpha work-in-progress footage of a female pirate jumping from ship to ship and fighting enemies with a quarterstaff. The developers admit the video is “too short” and said they’re saving some things for the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. But, they point out the footage they did show isn’t scripted, there are no loading screens, and everything in the game world is seamless.
“Everything is connected,” Ancel said. “You can do everything anywhere at any time.”
“Bg&E2” takes place during a “golden age of piracy,” the developers said. Players can create their own pirate captains and recruit from a wide variety of humans and anthropomorphized animal/human hybrids. Everyone they meet...

One of the most anticipated games coming out of Ubisoft is looking better and better! Check out new footage for Beyond Good & Evil 2!
Ubisoft delighted everyone last year, at E3 2017, when they premiered a cinematic trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2. Since then, the developer, Ubisoft Montpellier, has been sporadically showing us updates of what has become an extremely ambitious video game. The first update had Creative Director Michel Ancel giving us a tour of the massive world they had built, but outside of the amazing flying mechanics, we didn't get to see much gameplay. Thankfully, the developers remedied that by hosting a livestream that included about :45 seconds of new gameplay footage for Beyond Good & Evil 2, which you can see just below. Be warned, though, while the footage is stunning, it's still very much pre-alpha footage.

On the heels of its showstopping reveal, during UBIE3, Creative Director of Beyond Good and Evil 2, Michel Ancel is showing off a 14-minute demo of the game! Watch it below and find out all kinds of new details!
If you left Ubisoft's E3 2017 Press Conference with an appetite for more Beyond Good & Evil 2, you're in the majority. Thankfully, Ubisoft Montpellier is here to quench your thirst with a 14-minute demo of BGE2, hosted by Creative Director Michel Ancel!
During the demo, Ancel explains that this demo is“a mix between a technological demonstration of the engine that we call Voyager, and the actual game with some gameplay elements,” so it's entirely possible that what we're seeing isn't exactly what we'll see when the game comes out, eventually. Nevertheless, it's still a pretty amazing to see their process and all the elements they're working on integrating.
Elements like fitting smaller ships inside bigger ships, called Motherships, traveling within an open-universe, creating unique/satisfying experiences while exploring multiple planets, character selection, among other things. One of the more important parts of the process for Ancel is making sure that everything connects to each other.
“It’s not just about the planet on one side and the story on the other one, The planet and the story are connected, and that’s a very important thing for us.”
Despite it being in the very early stages of development, everything Ancel shows us looks absolutely amazing. The open-world concept with a philosophy that encourages exploration is something we crave as gamers. Plus, with the exciting, yet humorous reveal trailer setting the tone, it's highly likely that fans who've waited years for another sequel to Beyond Good & Evil will not be disappointed with this prequel.

Ubisoft’s E3 press conference was widely considered a success this year. Unlike previous outings, the publisher chose to cut the frills and focus on the games, with demos for Far Cry 5 and Skull and Bones winning over the audience.
However, the standout moment from the conference belongs to the long-awaited reveal of Beyond Good and Evil 2. Rumors have been circulating about the game for the last decade, and we finally got a brief glimpse of it when creative director Michel Ancel took the stage. Information is still relatively scarce, however, as the brief reveal teaser offered up was a CGI video, which didn’t tell us too much about how the game would play.
Similarly, most of the plot details we received came in the form of a press release, which explained that Beyond Good and Evil 2 would serve as a prequel to the original. Instead of focusing on Jade, the game will take place in System 3, the center of interstellar trade, where the creation of hybrid slaves has become commonplace, and private enterprises fight over resources and power.
Now that E3’s over though, Ubisoft has offered a glimpse at the first in-engine demo for Beyond Good and Evil 2, which was shown off to press and other industry personnel on the show floor. The video (which you can watch above) is hosted by Ancel himself, as he pilots a spaceship as well as a jetpack-wielding monkey. While the clip only features a vertical slice of the game, we do catch a glimpse at how space travel works, and how the engine handles planets and universes.
There’s no planned release date or target platforms for Beyond Good and Evil 2 just yet, but we can’t wait to hear more about the work being done on the game. For those who are interested in shaping the title’s development, be sure to check out its Space Monkey Program, which will allow fans to take a look at early versions of the game and offer feedback to the developers.

Closing out Ubisoft’s whirlwind E3 presser this evening was Beyond Good & Evil 2, the long-in-development sequel from Michel Ancel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier.
It’s real, it has a gritty, M-rated trailer (see above), and it turns out that Ancel’s spacefaring romp is actually a prequel to the 2003 original, one in which players journey to System 3, the “center of interstellar trade and colonization in the Milky Way of the 24th century.” Set within a seamless online playground, it’s fair to say that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a far cry from the cult original, and it seems that Ancel’s sci-fi title has, in many ways, evolved with the times.
Details of a release window and/or platforms (Nintendo Switch, perhaps?) weren’t disclosed at this early, early stage, which has led to some fans worrying that BGE2 will slip off the radar following tonight’s grand comeback.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch for a year before being available on other platforms, according to the latest round of rumors and leaks. After spending several years in development hell, series creator Michel Ancel confirmed last year that the game is in development by way of several pieces of concept art (one of which you can see above), but stopped short of providing release date or platform details.

Michel Ancel, Game Designer behind the Rayman franchise and the pre-historic survival game Wild, has stressed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 represents a “very serious” development project for Ubisoft.
Word comes by way of Kotaku, who quizzed the decorated developer about the long-gestating sequel. First announced back in 2008, Beyond Good & Evil 2 essentially fell off the radar soon after it was unveiled, only to surface via Ancel’s Instagram feed two months ago with some intriguing concept art to boot (see above). More than anything, those photos represented a statement of intent from Ancel and Co., after the dev revealed to Kotaku that the cryptic artwork “was not a gimmick but a way to say ‘Look. As for why development has taken so long, Michel Ancel conceded that during pre-production on Beyond Good & Evil 2, the team found themselves limited by technology, but not anymore.

With Beyond Good & Evil 2 now officially confirmed as being in development thanks to series creator Michel Ancel and Ubisoft themselves, talk has subsequently turned to how the long awaited follow-up to the 2003 original will fit into the series’ chronology and, perhaps more importantly, which platforms it will appear on.
Previous rumors had suggested that the action-adventure title would see a release exclusively on Nintendo’s mystery Nx console and, according to a new report by LetsPlayVideoGames.com (via Nintendo Life), that’s looking like an increasingly likely prospect.

Ubisoft developer Michel Ancel is best known as the creator of the long-running Rayman franchise, but also spearheaded the action-adventure title Beyond Good & Evil way back in 2003. Despite garnering critical praise and being set up as the first in a franchise, underwhelming sales caused plans for any sequels to grind to a halt. The game gradually built a cult following over the next few years, and in 2008, Ubisoft and Ancel finally confirmed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 had begun development via a brief teaser, also releasing an HD remaster of the original in 2011.

Many fans were hoping the long-gestating Beyond Good & Evil sequel would make an appearance during Ubisoft's E3 conference. It's continued absence over the years has many wondering if it's been canned altogether. Ubisoft has assured gamers they're still working on it, but it still doesn't sound like we'll see it soon. Come inside to learn more!
As was the case yesterday, when it came to The Elder Scrolls 6, the inbetween E3 conference interviews have shed more light on a much anticipated game title. Fans have already waited a long time for Beyond Good & Evil 2, and the silence between updates has grown frustrating.
The original game launched in 2003, with the sequel being formally announced with a trailer in 2008, by the game's creator, Michel Ancel. Since then it's been a roller coaster of "it's in-production," to being on hold, to coming back to life. The last real update we had was back in 2014, when Ancel revealed his new open-world game Wild, and people were worried about what it meant. Back then, Ubisoft assured gamers Bg&E 2 was in active production and in the works.
Despite that, yesterday's complete absence of both Wild and Beyond Good & Evil had fans scratching their heads and wondering. While doing an interview with Geoff Keighley on YouTube, Yves Guillemot tried to allay fans' fears about the status of the game:
“It’s still on the way. It’s something at one point you will see, yes… [developer] Michel [Ancel] is working on it, but he’s doing two games at the same time, he’s doing Wild at the same time. It’s coming along, but he has to spend more time on it so we can see it faster.”
I suppose it's good news to hear that Beyond is still being worked on, but fromt he sounds of it, focus is on Wild right now and our chances of seeing the anticipated sequel anytime soon is slim. It's a little disheartening at this point, but such is the world of game development. Hopefully we'll hear/see something more substantial before too long.

Sony's showing at Gamescom was impressive, possibly stealing the show with plenty of reveals...
Gamescom has seen quite a few interesting announcements from Sony, which some would say has only increased the gap between the PlayStation manufacturer and its arch rival, Microsoft.
Games were the focus, of course, and here Sony hit the ball out of the park, announcing new IPs, including Michel Ancel's Wild, The Tomorrow Children from PixelJunk's developer, Alienation from Housemarque, and Hellblade from Heavenly Sword developer, Ninja Theory. There was also the fright-fest that is P.T. This has been revealed via NeoGAF to be a new Silent Hill game involving Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, as well as Walking Dead star, Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon). This could be good.

It’s one thing to have a secret project in the works, but five? That seems to be the case with Ubisoft Toronto, according to comments from Studio Manager Jade Raymond.
Raymond spoke at South By Southwest, revealing that two of the games in question are being co-developed with other studios, while the remaining three are the work of the Toronto studio alone.
There are definitely a lot of plates spinning. None of them have been announced.
Not exactly a concrete answer, but at least we know games are being made. We do have previous confirmation that Ubisoft Toronto is helping out with the next Rainbow Six entry, subtitled Patriots, but outside of that the mystery titles are anyone’s guess. I’m secretly cheering for a true Prince of Persia revival… or perhaps Michel Ancel has infiltrated the Toronto studio and is contracting its help to finish Beyond Good and Evil...

Although the platforming genre’s heyday has predominantly passed, it is still quite popular with gamers. After all, Mario generally continues to exude excellence, forcing his competitors to up their game plans or risk being forgotten. Sure, we’re certainly not seeing the volume of new genre entries and iterations like we did back in the 1990s, but that’s not to say it isn’t still going strong within a market that nowadays favours shooters over side-scrollers. Things have just changed.

Outside of the venerable Mario Bros. franchise, great platforming is tough to find these days. Granted, a lot of it surely has to do with the industry having switched its main focus to realistic-looking games and shooters. Still, although the amount of fantastic sidescrolling jumpers has dwindled over the last decade or more, some companies have stepped up to the plate, with Ubisoft being a prime example. We fanatics certainly have them to thank for two of the best genre efforts in a long time: 2011′s Rayman Origins, and now its soon-to-be-released sequel, Rayman Legends.
Originally announced as a Wii U exclusive, the limbless wonder’s latest outing has since made the jump to almost every other major platform out there. For the purpose of this review, though, we’ll stick with that original, GamePad-intensive version.

Captain Ahab had Moby Dick and Jay Gatsby had his green light at the end of Daisy Buchanan's dock. I have "Beyond Good & Evil 2," Michel Ancel's on-again-off-again follow-up to one of the best games of 2003.
For better or worse, Moby Dick kills almost the entire crew of the Pequod, and Gatsby dies exposed and alone. However, Ubisoft may yet deliver us from the long national nightmare of not having "Beyond Good & Evil 2": Ancel thinks that the time is right for a sequel and hopes announce something official next year.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Ancel explained that the next generation of consoles are finally powerful enough to execute on his team's vision for Jade and Pey'j's adventures.
"In Beyond Good & Evil 1 at first it was a full planet, you could go to the North Pole and see the eternal day," he explained. "But we had to limit it as were only 35 people.

It’s true: We’ve been waiting for Rayman Legends for a while now. But, from the looks of things, that time spent anticipating the follow-up to one of this generation’s best titles will end up being well worthwhile, when the game launches on September 3. It looks great, to say the least, and Ubisoft has publicly stated that it delayed the project in order to make sure it’s as good as it can possibly be when it hits store shelves for various platforms. Furthermore, I’ve actually gone hands-on with the Wii U version, which was a blast to play in co-op.
Today brought with it little information on the mechanical front, but we did get to see some more footage from Rayman Legends during Ubisoft’s press conference. The French video game giant unveiled a brand new, animated trailer from visionary Michel Ancel, which offered some great in-game content.

Mario, Master Chief, Lara Croft, Solid Snake. These are names which every gamer knows, and even many non gamers know well. The stars of video games are like stars of movies. Some guys have what it takes to be at the top like a Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Megan Fox, and others do not have what it takes. Like most of the Baldwin brothers or Christian Slater. Sometimes however, there are actors who you don’t think should make it big, but do. Video game characters are no different, and there are some characters who have appeared in games secondary to the stars, but have gone on to be famous and stars in their own right. It doesn’t always happen. 100 points to anyone who can name the second playable character in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness…exactly.
But this list is a look at the ones who have made it big.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has once again confirmed that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development, however, he seemed to indicate that it could be awhile before we see the game re-announced.
“I don’t give comments anymore on Bg&E2,” Guillemot told Kotaku after the Playstation 4 event last week, “because I think … the next time next time we communicate we have to have something new.” Without specifically calling out any intended platforms, the CEO then simply added, “It’s coming.”
While it is always nice to get the latest “Beyond Good & Evil 2 is not canceled update”, it has certainly been a long wait for fans hoping to one day complete Jade’s adventure.

In an attempt to make amends for the (second) "Rayman Legends" delay, Ubisoft has revealed that the upcoming Wii U version of the game will be getting an online challenge mode in April. Better yet, the download will be completely free via the eShop.
Whether or not the new Challenge mode is enough to make up for the "Rayman Legends" delay is up to you. However, the challenge mode does seem promising, offering new challenges "weekly and daily," each coming with their own leaderboard. It's also the first time Rayman has gone online.
Get all the details straight from Sr. Game Manager Michael Micholic and Creative Director Michel Ancel in the video above.

When Ubisoft announced last week that they were delaying the Wii U version of Marcel Ancel and Ubisoft Montpelier’s “Rayman Legends” until September to coincide with a Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 port, I doubt they realize the size of the wasp’s nest they were stirring up.
When news of the delay started breaking, an indignant ex-Ubisoft staffer took to Spanish games site El Otro Lado, claiming that the Wii U version of “Legends” was finished and railing against Ubisoft’s treatment of its developers: “We had a first delay because it was obvious we couldn't finish on time, but we gave it all to be there on February,” writes user Zeta69 “What face do you think we had when, the week we had to close the game, we're being told it's not going to be released? I couldn't believe it.”
“This is not a decision taken by the development team.

Ubisoft’s upcoming Wii U platformer Rayman Legends was originally revealed to the world not through an official announcement from the company, but through a leaked trailer that made the rounds back in April. Though the heavily-promoted co-op play mechanic that makes use of the Game Pad’s touch screen was present in this initial trailer, another feature it showcased that hasn’t been mentioned since featured the use of the controller’s wireless Nfc capabilities in a manner similar to the popular Skylanders franchise. Clips were shown of players putting real-life objects and figurines on the Game Pad and having such characters as the Raving Rabbids materialize in the game.
Michel Ancel, the game’s director and creator of the Rayman series, said in a recent interview that this feature was only in the prototype phase at the time that trailer was made, and that there’s a good...

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that development on Beyond Good & Evil 2 has “slowed” due to Michel Ancel’s work on Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends.
Guillemot offered the update during an interview with Polygon last week, stating:

Rayman Legends was already confirmed to be launching some time soon after the Wii U’s launch, but now we have a more precise date – at least for Europe. Ubisoft will be releasing the platformer on November 30 there.
To go along with the announcement, some new videos have been released. The first shows off one of the game’s music-themed levels, which has Rayman running, jumping, and punching through a level to the tune of the classic rock song Black Betty.
The second video shows an interview with Michel Ancel, creator of the Rayman series, and his inspiration behind putting the game on Wii U, taking full advantage of the system’s unique controller for multiplayer gameplay, and some of the mechanics we can expect to see in certain levels.
We will keep you updated as more details on Rayman Legends are announced.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has possibly the most mysterious development cycle of any game since Duke Nukem Forever. A teaser was shown four years ago at Ubidays 2008, but that was its only official announcement. Shortly thereafter in 2009, a piece of concept footage leaked, showing what appeared to be series protagonist Jade being chased through several desert dwellings with a distinctly Middle Eastern influence.
Now, an additional two minuted of concept footage has leaked, courtesy of Unseen 64. Unfortunately, it's from no later than 2009, when the project last went on hold. The new video details some of the game's environments, which look similar to what we saw last time out. I can't help but wonder if the signs are placeholder art, or if that town really is that obsessed with fish markets. Probably the former.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 had another leak today, this time instead of just one picture we have a video showing off environment in game footage. The video basically shows you around one of the towns in the game and it appears to be the very same that was shown off in the picture that was leaked a couple of days ago.
Watch the video for yourselves below;
This footage is supposedly from around the time the Beyond Good & Evil 2 was put on hold in 2009. In addition, this footage has been demoed before, unfortunately it was low res cellphone footage.
Nothing new to report on the status of the game, other than Ubisoft and creator Michel Ancel still claims the game is in development but they have no time table for the release of the game.

For your viewing pleasure today, we have for you what could be the first in-game shot, or at least the first in-engine shot from the highly anticipated and much wanted Beyond Good & Evil 2.
According to an interview Toulouse Game, Creator, Michel Ancel confirms the game is in “active development” for next-gen consoles. This in itself raises some rather interested eyebrows. If this is the first in-engine shot, then does that mean this is the first impressions of the graphical prowess we can expect from the next generation of consoles?
The screenshot below doesn’t have that wow factor in my eyes, What do you guys think? As always, click to make it big.

Ubisoft confirmed yesterday that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is officially still in development according to creator Michel Ancel, but unfortunately will not likely be released this console generation. Beyond Good & Evil 2 had an official trailer that launched in 2008 but almost nothing has been said about the game since then, other than it was almost cancelled and that Ubisoft keeps insisting the game is being worked on.
Ancel stated in an interview:
“We won’t make promises that we can’t keep, We are in an active creation stage and at this moment we are only focusing on the game and making it the best game that we can. I can say that it’s a very ambitious game and we need some tech to achieve that ambition.”

An anonymous tipster at Kotaku has reported that they took a survey on what appears to be a sequel to Michel Ancel's critically acclaimed platformer, Rayman Origins. The survey was conducted by Arkenford, a marketing firm that regularly collaborates with Rayman publisher, Ubisoft.
The survey contained pictures of a dragon, castles, a ghost of Rayman, ruins, and what appears to be a frog strapped to stilts wearing nothing but a belt. The report suggests that the environments will gravitate away from Origins' outlandish designs in favor of something more familiar. I find this a little disconcerting, as I don't think dragons and castles can hold a candle to Origins' malevolent peppers bathing in cheese and cities made out of didgeridoos.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. Games go through several revisions, and this being from a survey suggests that Ubisoft is still in the planning stages,...

Last week it was all about the 2012 BAFTA Film Awards, and now sees our attention turn to gaming with the announcement of the nominees for the BAFTA Video Game Awards 2012. We were there last year and hope to be covering it again this year. But in the meantime here’s the full list of nominees, featuring the cream of the crop of video gaming.
Personally I hope Uncharted 3 sweeps the board in all the categories its nominated in, and – being a Mario fan – I hope Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 pick up awards… although Dead Space iOS could give them a run for the money in the handheld categories!

One day, Michel Ancel and his team at France’s Ubisoft decided they were going to do it up proper. They locked themselves in some posh Parisian loft with nothing but a stack of Doctor Seuss books, Peter Gabriel’s complete discography, a box set of Pee-wee’s Playhouse episodes, VHS tapes of Terry Gilliam’s less successful movies, a case of strawberry vodka, some whippets, a theremin, and a copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii. As the weekend wound down, they figured they could probably do that Mario thing better. This is likely the only scenario that could ...

A 1999 demo promoting the ruinously expensive Shenmue (called “What’s Shenmue?”) featured an exclusive scene in which then company president Yukawa-san could be seen slumped at his desk, head in hands, surrounded by piles of unsold consoles (above). Deep down, Sega must have known the Dreamcast didn’t stand a chance even before they axed it two years later.
Even though the Sega Dreamcast enjoyed a relatively short lifespan (officially somewhere between its 1998 Japanese launch and late 2002 termination) and wasn’t supported at all by the most powerful publisher of the day (Electronic Arts) the well-loved machine still boasts an impressive library of titles.
Even extending this “best of” list, from the originally planned 10 to a whopping 30 games, has seen me leave out such gems as cult top-down shooter Ikaruga, well-regarded sports sim NHL 2K2, online deathmatch game Outtrigger, stylish BioWare-made shooter MDK2 and Street Fighter III: Double Impact (to...

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will not be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, according to Ubisoft. Designer Michel Ancel said that performance and interface issues have meant the publisher is looking to pursue next generation systems. "We can't say it's really only next-gen," he told Videogamer. "We need to reconsider the target platform because I have a very specific idea of that game. "On high-end PCs we can already play the game, but it's very hard to say 'we'll cut that, that and that to make it fit into another platform'." He continued: "On top (more)...
