Exclusive: Jennifer Grey is the latest actress to don the big hair to play cult-like figure Gwen Shamblin on television.
The Dirty Dancing star will play the controversial religious leader and Christian diet guru in a Lifetime movie – Gwen Shamblin: Starving for Salvation.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Sarah Paulson is also attached to star as Shamblin in a scripted adaptation of docuseries The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin, which is in the works at HBO Max.
Shamblin, who rose to fame with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet program, and founded the Remnant Fellowship Church. She was a charismatic figure with a carefully curated image who was accused of emotional, psychological and physical abuse and exploitation for the church’s alleged cult-like practices.

Horror icon Bruce Campbell is playing a much different role this holiday season: a retired rock star.
In the upcoming Hallmark Christmas film “One December Night,” premiering on the network on Nov. 13 at 10:01 p.m. Et, Campbell portrays Steve Bedford, a former member of the legendary rock duo Bedford & Sullivan. Lifetime’s 2020 slate for their “It’s A Wonderful Lifetime” holiday programming will feature 30 new movies with two pics serving diverse narratives, talent and characters. The Producers Guild of America has created the PGA Innovation Award, which will be presented for the first time the 31st annual PGA Awards in January. The Innovation Award will honor outstanding entertainment endeavors across Vr, Ar, experiential and other emerging media.
The new award, along with other key awards, will be given out at a nominee celebration prior to the PGA Awards show, set for January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium.
