It’s a familiar arc in movies: The person who doesn’t want the job is the best candidate for it. And so it was with Dan Lin, the producer and founder of Rideback, who this week starts his tenure as Netflix’s film head.
Lin was not looking for a new job, but then came an incoming call in early February from Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria. According to two people familiar with the meeting that followed, Lin was blunt in his assessment of Netflix’s output: The movies were not great and the financials didn’t add up. Bajaria appreciated the honesty and, shortly after, she asked Lin if he would be open to leaving Rideback, the company the producer had spent the better part of two decades building.

A few weeks before this year’s Golden Globes, Kristen Wiig went over to Will Ferrell’s house in L.A. to brainstorm how they might co-present an acting prize at the show, which was reinventing itself as new and improved after a series of scandals. The event was among the first major Hollywood gatherings since the actors strike ended in November, with a guest list of stars hoping to fit six months of thwarted awards campaigning into one night, and Wiig and Ferrell were expected to lighten the mood. “We wrote stuff out, and then we would be like, ‘Wait, how does this end? Is this funny?’ ” Wiig says. “And then I was like, ‘I have this song on my phone that really makes me laugh. Can I just play it for you?’ ”

Monaco joins CAA from A3 Artists Agency, where she spent five years as a talent agent in its theatrical division. The agency ceased operations in February. Prior to that, Monaco worked at Buchwald, in both its New York and Los Angeles offices, and Prestige Talent Agency. While Mark Ruffalo is now a bonafide veteran in Hollywood, there was a time when he struggled to gain fame as an actor. Ruffalo’s journey into acting began unexpectedly during his twelfth-grade year when he walked through the theatre department at his Virginia Beach high school.
His family had relocated from Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he was enrolled in a Catholic school. Dealing with undiagnosed dyslexia, his classmates used to laugh at him as he struggled to read aloud.

For one full minute during the 96th annual Academy Awards, John Mulaney recapped the 1989 Kevin Costner baseball movie, “Field of Dreams.” Standing alone onstage, preparing to present the Oscar for Best Sound, the stand-up comic pivoted from a broad set-up about how some people still think movies were better before the talkies took over — “These people are difficult and insane” (a good line which got his first laugh) — to listing films that were clearly better because of their audio — films like “Jaws,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “Madame Web” (laugh No. 2). Then Mulaney said, “Or what about that moment in ‘Field of Dreams’ when you hear, ‘If you build it, he will come?’”
And then it happened. Mulaney kept going. And going. And going. He dropped the inherently funny phrase, “I want to watch ghosts play baseball,” confessed to thinking James Earl Jones’ book from the movie was a real book,...

I’m going to begin with a confession: I like to think of myself as both a decent son — Hi, Mom! — and an Anglophile, but before tonight, I’d gone 40-something years of my life without realizing that the British had a different Mother’s Day.
Or maybe I’ve known and forgotten? Either way, it was impossible to forget during Sunday (March 10) night’s telecast of the 96th Academy Awards, in which U.K. Mother’s Day got more onstage references than Gaza, Ukraine and Donald Trump combined.
It wasn’t that politics were wholly absent in the telecast, but a decree seemed to have gone around that the two highest-profile international tragedies of the moment could be addressed once apiece, both effectively.

John Mulaney's Hilarious Field Of Dreams Recap Doubled As His Oscar Host Audition - And He Nailed It
For award show junkies frustrated with the apparent laziness of a lot of the comedic material delivered by award hosts in recent years, comedian John Mulaney has often been a beacon of hope. Whereas Jimmy Kimmel fills his monologue with jokes about how much he hates sitting through long movies, Mulaney's monologue at the Governor's Award earlier this year demonstrated a clear love of film and appreciation towards everyone who makes them. (A stark contrast from Jo Koy's hacky material at the Golden Globes not long before.) Since then, people have been wondering why Mulaney's never been invited to host the Oscars, and Mulaney's latest speech (to present the award for Best Sound) has only raised the question further. He started off with this killer bit of sarcasm:
"Without sound, we wouldn't have been able to hear such classic lines as 'You're going to need a bigger boat,' 'I'll have what she's having,...

Earlier this year, Filipino comedian Jo Koy dropped the ball while hosting the Golden Globes for the first time, with many deeming his jokes toward Taylor Swift and Barbie sexist and offensive. But in the case of the 96th Academy Awards, to avoid any such controversy, the Oscars brought in the experienced Late Night host Jimmy Kimmel to present the ceremony for the fourth time.
But while Kimmel is well-versed in the hosting scenario and how to approach jokes about celebrities, one of his jokes left Poor Things Star Emma Stone visibly irritated.

Comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel once again took the hosting duties at the 96th Academy Awards, the second time in a row and fourth time in all. And people have started to believe that the Oscar host’s days at delivering an impressive monologue might be over. Kimmel, known for not holding back in his monologue, did the same at the 2024 Oscras, addressing everything from the 2023 Hollywood strikes to taking a sharp jab at the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Most Social Capital Lost in 10 Minutes: Jo Koy Jo Koy
Proverbial gun to head, few awards show aficionados could name a more embarrassing monologue than Jo Koy’s turn at the 2024 Golden Globes — a slow-motion car wreck that will live in infamy for the crickets and cringes he drew from his A-list audience. Fellow comics have pointed to the emcee’s absence of established rapport with the crowd as reason for his undoing, but the fact remains that his big moment at bat was so bad, it even broke Taylor Swift’s iron curtain of composure.
Most Categorically Confusing Categories: Adapted vs. Original Screenplay Barbie and Leonard Bernstein
The Film Academy left many scratching their heads when Barbie, a script based on a doll with no backstory, was deemed an adaptation in the Oscar race — while Maestro, a biopic drawing on the well-documented life of Leonard Bernstein, was permitted to compete as an original work.

Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the Oscars this year for the fourth time. Other than Bob Hope (19 times), Billy Crystal (nine) and Johnny Carson (five), no solo host has done it more. (Whoopi did it 4 times as well.) But it is a good bet that among those hosts, no one has seen as many of the nominated films. Kimmel is a self-described movie fan, and as I learned from our conversation he not only spends weeks, months even, prepping his monologue, but he also might be one of the few in the room at the Dolby Theater who actually has seen everything. And I mean everything.
Kimmel’s first Oscar show in 2017 was a baptism of fire that ended with the infamous Envelopegate, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pronounced heavy favorite La La Land as the Best Picture winner over what was revealed soon as the actual winner, Moonlight. He...

By this time next week, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel will have his fourth Oscars hosting gig under his belt, tying him with Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon, and just one behind Johnny Carson—but way behind Billy Crystal at nine and Bob Hope with Wayne Gretzky-like numbers at 19.
In advance of the big show, he and his producing partner/wife Molly McNearney spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, letting people know what they can expect. First, Kimmel joked about how you don’t really notice a solid hosting job and pretending he didn’t know Matt Damon (a frequent target of Kimmel’s ribbing) was in “Oppenheimer.” Then they talked about their plans for the broadcast.
McNearney, who slipped in that they’ve been writing jokes for the big show since Christmas (but allowing spaces for ad-libs), explained that Kimmel’s first function is to work the room. If the audience is laughing,...

As Jimmy Kimmel sees it, hosting the Oscars is a lot like taking a plane trip.
“You don’t think too much about it if it went well,” he explains. “If it was terrible, you tell everyone you know about it — the turbulence, the delay, how long you had to sit in the airport waiting.” Kimmel, who will be emceeing for his fourth time, concludes, “We just want a flight that’s on time and cocktails are served and nobody throws up.”
Between prepping for the March 10 telecast and his ABC late night series, which share a team of writers, he and his executive producer and wife, Molly McNearney, hopped on a Zoom to discuss his ideal audience, famous frenemy Matt Damon and his wish for Golden Globes host Jo Koy.
What is the process that lands you at, “Yes, I’ll do it again”?
Kimmel It’s different for both of us.

Comedian Chelsea Handler is back at it with another year of skiing in a swimsuit on her birthday.
Handler posted a video of her birthday tradition on her Instagram to commemorate. She is carrying on the tradition that she started last year, but this time she raised the stakes by doing the same routine, plus a cocktail and a joint.
The post’s caption read, “multi-tasking on my 49th!”
She added the reel posted to her profile with 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and also posted it on her story.
In addition to the cocktail and marijuana, Handler also had her dogs (wearing pink ski goggles to match her own) strapped to her. She referred to them as “my bears.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Handler talked about why she loves the resort, saying, “I went to Whistler for the first time for my 38th birthday with girlfriends.

Shane Gillis acknowledged the elephant in the room right away – sort of.
“Yeah, I’m here,” said the comedian, who seemed as bemused as anyone else that he was actually hosting Saturday Night Live. “Most of you probably have no idea who I am. I was actually fired from this show a while ago – but don’t look that up, please. If you don’t know who I am, please, don’t Google that. Don’t even worry about it.”
For those still unaware, I’ll respect Gillis’ wishes and save you a search: In 2019 Shane Gillis was hired and then four days later famously un-hired as a new SNL cast member after clips from his podcast resurfaced in which he uttered anti-Chinese and homophobic slurs. (A closer reading of the podcast utterances that got him fired reveal that the exchange in question was a bit gray: Was he channeling...

Ricky Gervais does not hold back when he makes jokes, and the reason why he has been chosen to host the Golden Globe five times is because he might say something wildly offensive and controversial that would steal everyone’s attention. Indeed, every time he goes up the stage, some of his jokes would land and some would miss.

London, Feb 18 (Ians) ‘Dr Who’ star David Tennant roped in a host of celebrity friends for his opening monologue at the BAFTAs, reports ‘Variety’.
The 2024 show started at the Royal Festival Hall in London with Tennant re-enacting his hit pandemic show ‘Staged’ alongside Michael Sheen, the premise being that Sheen wants Tennant to dog-sit his pup Bark Ruffalo on the same night as the BAFTAs.
Tennant tries to pass the dog on to his friends, including Stanley Tucci, Himesh Patel, Tom Hiddleston and Judi Dench. With no one to palm him off on, Tennant turned up in person at the venue with Bark Ruffalo in tow, notes ‘Variety’.
Taking to the stage Tennant joked his monologue was more than three and a half hours long and that the evening was sure to go “smoother than Ken’s chest”, referring to the plastic doll played by Ryan Gosling in the hit...

Director-producer-writer Judd Apatow welcomed the nominees and guests to the 76th DGA Awards, as he greeted the audience joking: “I’m your host Bradley Cooper in an even more beguiling Jewish nose.” Apatow opened up with a zinger drafting off the DGA’s history of never striking against the studios, reports Variety.
He noted that his agents told him to hold out for more money for his fifth time as host of the ceremony. He said: “But in the spirit of the DGA I accepted their first offer.”
Taking aim at the current political landscape, Apatow addressed the crowd stating: “I swear to God if this is the only time you vote this year, you can all go f*** yourselves.”

If there’s a holy grail of awards opening monologues, it’s Judd Apatow’s at the DGA Awards.
In typical fashion, the filmmaker who is known for his killer Bill Cosby impersonation, took the mic for the fifth time to host the DGA Awards — with the opening monologue cut off to the press room. Don’t ask why that is in a post Trump era political environment.
Apatow won over the room with his jokes about how hasty the DGA came to an agreement with the AMPTP, M&As and how Byron Allen could be the ultimate buyer of all media companies, and SAG-AFTRA president as “the voice of reason” during the swamps of the strike.
“My agent said I should hold out for more money, but in the spirt of the DGA, I accepted their first offer!” ribbed the 40-Year Old Virgin director in reference to how fast...

On Friday, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring. But the groundhog failed to make any such forecasts about 2024 Oscars viewers. Amateur.
Two days after Phil crawled back into whatever hole he came from, Sunday’s Grammys TV audience soared 34 percent above 2023’s telecast with an average of 16.9 million viewers — the most since the B.C. (before Covid) days. Hold our (open bar) beers, the Golden Globes said. Less than one month earlier, the Globes jumped 50 percent to 9.3 million viewers, its own best tally since the pandemic.
Should we pencil the Oscars in for a huge year? Yes and no. So, maybe. Probably. Depends on your definition of “huge.”
The 2024 Grammys and Globes took two very different paths to this point. The Grammy Awards grew from a pretty good performance the prior year; the Globes recovered from an all-time low. Both aired on CBS, the longterm home of the Grammy Awards,...

Before Meghan Markle married a prince and became the Duchess of Sussex, she was known as Rachel Zane on a television show named Suits.
The show ran for nine seasons, with Meghan in seven of them. Now, a spin-off is in the works, and the question is whether or not Meghan will be involved.

After a disastrous 2023, Meghan Markle and her famous princely husband, Harry, are looking for ways to reinvent themselves.
A part as an actress or even director on the spin-off would generate income and hopefully good press for Meghan.

It could be goodbye to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix deal in 2025. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex face a “ticking time bomb” that is their five-year contract with the streaming giant, according to a commentator. The reason they might part ways is not unlike Spotify and the Sussexes in 2023. Harry and Meghan may simply not deliver successful content beyond their 2022 Harry & Meghan docuseries. This means there’s a lot riding on the couple’s upcoming Netflix project.

A new biography claims Prince William considered Prince Harry’s 2022 inference about his marriage to Kate Middleton the “lowest of the low.” Ahead, what the Duke of Sussex said in Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries that “astonished” friends of the royal family. Plus, why “opinions were divided” on Harry’s comment.
Prince Harry’s ‘fit the mold’ marriage comment
In a Daily Mail excerpt of King Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, out Jan. 18, 2024, author Robert Hardman described Harry & Meghan, the six-part docuseries chronicling Harry and Meghan Markle’s romance and exit from royal life, as a “salvo” of “withering remarks.”
“Among other things, Prince Harry claimed that, for male members of the family, ‘there can be a temptation or an urge to marry someone who would fit the mold — as opposed to somebody who you perhaps are destined to be with,’” Hardman recalled.

Kevin Hart joined The Independent for a recent interview in which he called Jo Koy a “phenomenal” stand-up comedian following the disastrous reviews Koy earned as the host of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Hart made headlines earlier this month when he said he will never host the Oscars because award shows “just aren’t comedy-friendly environments anymore,” and he doubled down on that opinion while talking about Koy. He argued that Koy had a far more difficult time connecting to the celebrities in the room because he’s just not an industry comic.
“Look, the climate of comedy attached to award shows has just changed drastically,” Hart said. “And as a talent, if you don’t have the relationships that are in that room, those rooms can be cold. I don’t consider [awards shows] to be good gigs at this point.”
“When you look at those that have had a high level of success — Ricky Gervais,...

Dana Carvey thinks it’s going to be “really cool to laugh” as he returns to his podcast and continues to grieve following the death of his son Dex.
In his first Fly on the Wall podcast episode since last November, comedian and former Saturday Night Live castmember Dana Carvey returned to the mic with his co-host and friend David Spade. The duo took time out to address Carvey’s grief, while also discussing topics like Jo Koy’s Golden Globes gig, including that Taylor Swift joke.
“If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” Carvey said while thanking people for their messages of support. “I thought about this over the holidays and decided to come back to the podcast because I think it’s a long day when you’re not working, and you get in your head.”

Princess Anne went viral for blocking Prince Harry’s view at the coronation with her hat. Now, in a new royal biography, an author revealed how the Princess Royal reacted to the headpiece. Ahead, the question Anne asked about the hat she wore to King Charles III’s coronation. Plus, why she sat directly in front of the Duke of Sussex.
Anne wore a meaningful outfit to King Charles III’s coronation
Unlike Kate Middleton’s coronation dress, the Princess Royal’s ensemble reflected her military role in the ceremony. Anne served as Gold Stick in Waiting, a position she’s reportedly held since 1998, dating back to the 1400s when two officers — a Gold and Silver Stick — stayed near the monarch for protection.
Discussing her coronation role ahead of the ceremony, Anne told CBC News: The National she’d agreed to do it, in part, because it made figuring out what to wear easier.
