Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

Despite his heroic (and tragic) demise in Stranger Things Season 4, Eddie Munson might not be gone for good. Played by Joseph Quinn, Eddie was a student at Hawkins High School and the unique leader of the Hellfire Club, a group centered around Dungeons & Dragons.

He also rocked out on his electric guitar in his band, Corroded Coffin, and was pals with Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, and Mike Wheeler. Sadly, Eddie sacrificed himself, but there’s a chance he might come back somehow.
Fans are eagerly speculating about Quinn’s potential return in the final season of Stranger Things, as the actor himself remains tight-lipped about it. But looks like there’s a deeper meaning behind why he is keeping mum.

With “Stranger Things” Season 5 in production after a year of strike-induced delays, the road to the end of the Duffer brothers’ Netflix blockbuster has officially begun.
In addition to returning stars like David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Finn Wolfhard, the fifth and final season added ’80s action icon Linda Hamilton to its cast. “The Terminator” star was announced as an addition to “Stranger Things” in summer 2023, before WGA and SAG strikes prevented the new season from entering production. But now that the show is up and running, the actress has opened up about the experience of joining a cultural phenomenon — and the hidden costs of appearing on a series that you enjoy.

In 2015, Fox debuted a science-fiction mystery series called "Wayward Pines" starring Matt Dillon as U.S. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke who is sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of two fellow agents in a small town in Idaho. After getting in a car accident, he awakens to discover he cannot leave Wayward Pines, nor can he contact anyone outside of the town. He quickly learns that one of the missing agents is dead, while the other, his ex-partner Kate (Carla Gugino) has simply settled down and started a new life in the town.
If that wasn't odd enough, Wayward Pines is boxed in by an electric fence and run by Sheriff Arnold Pope (Terrence Howard), who punishes any attempts to flee the city with a public execution known as a "reckoning." If this sounds like David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" by way of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," you're not far off.

“Stranger Things” is heading into its fifth and final season, which likely won’t premiere on Netflix until sometime in 2025. Cast member Gaten Matarazzo recently appeared at MegaCon Orlando (via Cbr) and was asked if there were any changes he would make to the show’s first four seasons, to which the actor didn’t hesitate to say that more characters should’ve been killed off. Heading into the show’s final season, original cast members like Matarazzo, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton and Noah Schnapp are all returning.
“It might sound messed up but we should kill more people,” Matarazzo said. “This show would be so much better if the stakes were much higher, like at any moment any of these kids can kick it. I feel like we’re all too safe.”

The final season of "Stranger Things" is down one team member: actor Eduardo Franco recently confirmed to "The Steve Varley Show" (via ScreenRant) that his character on the Netflix juggernaut, stoner Argyle, won't be back for season 5. "I never got a phone call, so yeah, I think that's it," Franco told Varley after the host mentioned fan concerns that he was missing from the first cast photo for the new season. Production has reportedly already begun on season 5, so unless Matt and Ross Duffer have a last-minute plan to get Franco back in the show later down the line, it seems his character will be absent during the show's endgame.
It's not exactly surprising that "Stranger Things" would want to cut down on its cast, especially given that season 4 earned some criticism for its bloating, multiple plotlines and sprawling casts. Yet Franco's character, hippie pizza delivery guy Argyle, was one...

News has been slowly coming out about the next season of Stranger Things, which has now entered into production this week after a very long wait with the show impacted greatly by the strikes. In a new interview with the YouTube channel Steve Varley, actor Eduardo Franco has said he’s not currently involved in the fifth season likely ruling out the return of Argyle.
As a quick refresher, Argyle was introduced in season 4 following the Byers’ move to California and serves as Jonathan’s best friend throughout the series. It's been over a year and a half since "Stranger Things" season 4 arrived on Netflix, and fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of the hit sci-fi series. Plus, there's a bit of a ticking clock on the series, since the teenage cast members, who were just kids when the show began back in 2016, are aging more everyday and don't exactly look like they belong in high school anymore. Thankfully, with the Hollywood strikes resolved and a new year upon us, 2024 is the year that "Stranger Things" goes back into production.

The fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things was just about to start filming when the writers strike hit back in May. A couple months into that strike, the Screen Actors Guild also went on strike – and while the writers strike ended in September, the actors strike continued on into November. Following the six month delay, Netflix decided to wait out the holidays before getting Stranger Things season 5 rolling… but now they have officially confirmed that production is finally underway! They celebrated the start of production by unveiling of a behind-the-scenes image of the cast with series creators The Duffer Brothers, and you can check out that image at the bottom of this article.

When we last reported on the final season of Netflix’s smash hit series “Stranger Things,” production was targeting a start date of January 8, 2024. They met their target date; Netflix announced this morning that “Stranger Things 5” has officially begun production.
Netflix shared a behind the scenes image of the assembled cast accompanying the announcement, below.
“Stranger Things 5” will be the Final season of Netflix‘s hit series, and Netflix recently announced during their Tudum event that Terminator icon Linda Hamilton will star.
The director behind last year’s Hulu hit Prey, Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is headed to the Upside Down to direct an episode of “Stranger Things 5,” we also learned.
The Season 4 finale set the stage for a final season that will bring the action entirely back to Hawkins, with the rift between Hawkins and the Upside Down now completely opened up by the monster behind it all, Vecna.

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, who are known as the Duffer Brothers, are shooting down a theory about the series finale.
After five seasons of fighting demons from The Upside-Down, the Netflix sci-fi series is coming to an end. The show’s fifth and final season was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and fans have been speculating about how the series will conclude.
One theory that has been circling among the most die-hard fans of the show is that none of the events have ever existed. The theory relies on the main characters playing a big, long and convoluted game of Dungeons and Dragons.
“That is correct. That is the ending…. No,” Matt jokingly told Metro at the West End premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow about the fan theory.
Ross added, “That would be the equivalent of, ‘That’s all a dream.

“Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer are shutting down at least one fan theory about the upcoming ending to their blockbuster Netflix series. On the red carpet for the new “Stranger Things” play in London, the duo went on record to Metro saying the series will not end with a reveal that all the events in the Upside Down were just a dream.
One fan theory about the “Stranger Things” ending alleges all the events on screen during the show’s run were actually just the main characters playing an elaborate and very long game of Dungeons and Dragons, a favorite among the characters since the show’s first season.
“No,” Matt said bluntly when the fan theory was brought up.
“That would be the equivalent of, ‘That’s all a dream,'” Ross added. “No, I assure you that is not how we’re going to end the show.

“Stranger Things” is finally going back to Hawkins.
Production on the fifth and final season of the juggernaut Netflix series is currently set to begin in early January, according to multiple sources, though the start date is still subject to change. Filming was postponed for over seven months due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Creators and executive producers Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer were among the most high profile showrunners to announce they were suspending work after the writers strike began in May, posting on social media that “Writing does not stop when filming begins.” When the Duffer brothers spoke to Variety in July about series costar Noah Schnapp (who was part of the Power of Young Hollywood issue), they elaborated on that sentiment.
“Since it’s our scripts, you’re changing it all the time on the fly,” Matt Duffer said. “You’re either working it out with the actors,...

Exclusive: The gang is returning to Hawkins. After a delay due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production on the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things is expected to get underway in early January, sources tell Deadline.
Things are still in flux but according to multiple sources, Monday Jan. 8 is a target start date, with Jan. 5 also being mentioned.
Cast members are believed to already be in Atlanta, where Stranger Things films, for prep work, with table reads also slated for the next couple of weeks before cameras start rolling after the New Year.
Stranger Things was close to starting production on Season 5 when the WGA strike began May 2.
Scripts had been completed by then but, faced with the prospect of filming without writers on set, creators, executive producers and showrunners the Duffer Brothers opted to instead postpone production, which was then further delayed by the actors strike.

Brace yourselves for one last battle in the Upside Down, because the Stranger Things kids (turned full-on young adults) are going out with a vengeance. In early 2022 — months before Stranger Things 4 debuted its supersized, two-part season on Netflix — creators Matt and Ross Duffer announced that Stranger Things Season 5 would be the show's last, as they have reached the natural conclusion of the story they set out to tell in 2016.
Unfortunately for fans, it hasn't been easy for the Duffer brothers to translate their creative vision for the concluding chapter to the screen. Production on Season 5 was delayed for many months due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but now that both unions have negotiated historic deals with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents Hollywood studios, it's set to resume.

“Stranger Things” did not disappoint after the nearly three-year wait between Seasons 3 and 4. The cast aged offscreen, but the events in the fourth season would age anybody, especially when it involves trying to save the world.
The supersized Season 4 built up much backstory with its nine episodes — each at least over an hour long, with the finale taking two hours and twenty minutes to unfold. It was also split into two volumes, the first half containing the majority of the episodes, leaving us with the epic reveal of Vecna’s true identity. The finale of Season 4 spelled out some impending doom for the small town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The Duffer Brothers have already started dropping hints about the fifth and final season of their science fiction drama series, and the writer’s room is open. Here’s what we know about “Stranger Things” Season 5 so far:

Before "Stranger Things," the Duffer Brothers released their first feature film "Hidden" in 2015. Part character-driven drama and part apocalyptic thriller, "Hidden" is a gripping exercise in suspenseful and economical filmmaking. The film mostly takes place in a fallout shelter where a couple, Ray and Claire (Alexander Skarsgård and Andrea Riseborough), and their young daughter, Zoe (Emily Alyn Lind), wander in darkness and scrounge dwindling canned goods. They are hiding from a sinister outside presence called the "Breathers." The Duffer Brothers use tight framing and dim lighting to immerse the audience in the characters' claustrophobia and fear.
Despite its incredible use of minimalistic filmmaking techniques and build-up to a stunning conclusion, Warner Bros. did not support "Hidden." The studio disliked the film's gloomy underground setting, even though that's what provides the white-knuckle tension. The Duffer Brothers made their film as they envisioned, accepting that the studio would not be actively promoting "Hidden" to a wider audience.

Stranger Things season 5 may be on hold under the strikes are concluded, but when the final season of the Netflix series does return, it will be bigger than ever.

After more than four months on strike, many showrunners are getting restless.
Writers Guild of America leaders are fielding a stepped-up volume of inquiries from prominent members who are frustrated with the duration of the work stoppage and looking to understand the guild’s strategy in engaging with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. In response to this heightened activity, multiple sources say several guild leaders are set to meet in person with a group of showrunners on Friday at WGA West headquarters.

“Stranger Things 4” pushed television episode lengths to extremes, with two chapters that ran around 90 minutes, and a season finale that was the length of a Hollywood blockbuster at nearly two-and-a-half hours. Anyone thinking the upcoming fifth and final season of the Netflix series will scale things back is mistaken. Speaking to Total Film magazine, “Stranger Things” executive producer and director Shawn Levy said Season 5 will only expand the scale of the already-humungous Season 4.
“There’s no way to be contiguous with Season 4, and not, frankly, expand scale and depth,” Levy said. “It’s major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. ‘Stranger Things 5’ is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see.”

Striking writers and actors are pressing a few common issues as they seek better contracts from the media companies represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. One big one: Both unions want more transparency about how many people are watching streaming series and movies and, along with that, a bigger share of streaming revenue via residuals or success-based metrics. That’s a marked change from the earlier days of the streaming boom, when freedom from the bottom-line nature of Nielsen ratings was often seen as a selling point for streaming services over broadcast or cable television outlets.
“Since streaming networks don’t release numbers, it’s fortunately quality over ratings,” showrunner Sam Esmail told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, as he was launching the series Homecoming for Amazon Prime Video. Coming off season two of Stranger Things, creators Matt and Ross Duffer joked that they had no idea what constitutes a hit,...

If you thought this latest season of "Stranger Things" was a little bluer than normal, well it's not your imagination, and it's for a good reason. Turns out it was at the behest of the best living filmmaker.
The long and short of it is that show creators Matt and Ross Duffer received a note from Steven Spielberg sometime after season one of "Stranger Things" where he complimented their throwback use of blue hue for their nighttime scenes. This was definitely more common in the '70s and '80s and while James Cameron might be best known for his blue nighttime photography, Spielberg himself dabbled in that look. Go back and watch "Jaws" and most of the nights are shown in shades of blue.
In "Jaws" that was mostly due to the "day for night" process which is when filmmakers shoot nighttime scenes during the day and slap a...

While the final season of “Stranger Things” continues to be delayed by Hollywood labor disputes, David Harbour confirmed that he received the Season 5 scripts prior to the writers strike, teasing that the ending is “very moving.”
Harbour said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that while he hasn’t read the final ending yet, he knows generally how the story resolves. “I know what it is,” he said of the ending, in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike. “I know where we net out and it’s very, very moving. That is the term I will use.”
Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper on the Netflix sci-fi series, suggested that Season 5 won’t pick up immediately after the fallout of Season 4, which ended with Max (Sadie Sink) in a coma and the Upside Down seeping into Hawkins.
