One of the most original and ambitious shows on network television came to a satisfying conclusion on February 13. After three seasons, NBC’s “La Brea” aired its series finale, wrapping up its ensemble plotlines in a manner that followed through on all the story’s thematic implications while also resolving a convoluted time travel narrative that has grown increasingly complicated — and increasingly inventive. Although the episode contains some of the biggest and most exciting action sequences in the show’s history, the most important task for series creator David Appelbaum was pulling off the more intimate scenes that resolved the adventure of the Harris family, a clan separated in Season 1 by a sinkhole that sent its characters back to 10,000 Bce.
“The biggest pressure was just trying to make sure the emotions landed,” Appelbaum told IndieWire. “From the beginning, the way I pitched the series was that it’s a family divided by a sinkhole,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the La Brea series finale “The Road Home Part 2.”] The La Brea series finale seemed to wrap everything up neatly in a bow. Everyone who wanted to return to 2021 did, and their futures are looking bright. But given that it’s become more common for shows to return in some way, whether in a revival or reboot, the question has to be asked. So that’s exactly what TV Insider did while breaking down the finale with creator David Appelbaum. “I definitely have ideas,” he tells us. “I have an idea for the show that would take some of the existing characters and bring in a new cast of characters and bring them back to 10,000 BC. The things that I would like to retain are the adventure element of 10,000 BC and also that it’s a family story at the heart of it. Whether that happens? This is the end of...

In another life, David Appelbaum’s La Brea could have been "the next Lost." Since the beloved ABC drama ended in 2010 (to mixed reviews and continued arguments to this day), networks have been chasing the elusive TV magic that started with the pilot of Lost, but that magic has been tough to pin down. It started as a simple concept — strangers stranded together on a strange island after a plane crash — but evolved into a sci-fi mystery box that dominated TV trends for years to come.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the series finale of NBC’s La Brea.
La Brea has officially come to an end.
After three seasons, the NBC sci-fi series has wrapped its finale six-episode run with an adventurous finale that gives closure to all its main characters but definitely leaves the door open for more.
The Harris family and most of those they met in 10,000 BC after falling into the sinkhole that opened in Los Angeles officially made it back to 2021 — as if no time had passed at all in the lives they left behind. However, some decided to stay behind in the name of continuing the new lives they began in the prehistoric era.
Deadline spoke with showrunner David Appelbaum about the final episode and bringing the series to a close with a shortened final stretch due to the strike. He also teased the idea of potential spinoffs...

Tuesdays are not the same without La Brea.
Although the series was initially billed as a sci-fi sinkhole drama, the series excelled as a family drama at its core. With so many facets, La Brea appeals to many audiences.
Fortunately, we don’t have to worry about it ending just yet. NBC renewed the series in January 2023, and La Brea Season 3 is coming. However, with the writers’ strike, the series’ future beyond the filmed episodes is uncertain.

Amidst talk that La Brea will end with a (very) short Season 3, series boss David Appelbaum shared with TVLine his own current line of thinking.
At the time of the show’s latest renewal, there was a report that Season 3 might constitute the sci-fi drama’s swan song, seeing as the cast will be released from their contracts after that due to the potentially short, six-episode order. That initial order of just six episodes was informed by the looming possible WGA strike, with the aim of writing/filming them all before any potential work stoppage.

"La Brea", the live-action science fiction drama TV series, created by David Appelbaum, has been renewed for Season Three, airing in 2023:
"...a massive sinkhole opens in the middle of Los Angeles at the site of the 'La Brea Tar Pits' and Wilshire Boulevard. Hundreds of people, vehicles and buildings are pulled into its depths. The survivors find themselves trapped in a mysterious and dangerous primeval land where they must band together to survive.
"Investigators realize the sinkholes provide a temporary portal to the same location in 10,000 B.C. Meanwhile, the survivors struggle to find a way back through the portal before it closes up.

Exclusive: NBC earlier today announced that its sci-fi drama La Brea has been renewed for a third season. I have learned that the pickup is for six episodes and that it was influenced by the possibility of a writers and/or directors and actors strike, with this likely being the show’s final chapter. Filming is slated to begin in March in Australia.
With the current WGA contract expiring May 1 and the DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts up June 30, a potential work stoppage could impact the start of production on the new broadcast season, leaving the networks without fresh episodes of scripted series for the first few weeks of the fall.
Possibly with that in mind, I hear NBC approached the cast of La Brea about doing a short third season. Because the series regulars have a 10-episode minimum guarantee (meaning that they have to be paid at least 10 episodic fees...

NBC’s time-hopping drama La Brea will continue into the future.
The network has picked up a third season of the sci-fi series from creator and showrunner David Appelbaum. The early renewal for La Brea on Tuesday comes a few hours before the series begins the back half of its 14-episode second season.
The series is averaging about 5.37 million viewers per episode (including a week of Nielsen-measured delayed viewing, but not including streaming) in season two, along with a 0.6 rating (equivalent to about 783,000 people) in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49. Those figures are down from 7.43 million and 0.9 for season one, when La Brea was the top new drama of 2021-22 in the 18-49 demo.

Some shows do cliffhangers; La Brea does cliff jumpers! In the NBC series’ November-airing winter finale, the reunited Eve and Gavin Harris (Natalie Zea and Eoin Macken) leaped into a sinkhole from 1988 back to 10,000 B.C. with their kids (Jack Martin and Zyra Gorecki). In January 31’s two-part return, “they land and are off to the races,” says exec producer and showrunner David Appelbaum, trying to shut down the time portal (long story). (Credit: Sarah Enticknap/NBC) “We only shot that scene 17 times,” the always hilarious Zea jokes to TV Insider. “It’s funny, people are like, ‘What happens?’ and I’m like, ‘Well, what have you seen?’ Because we shot so many different versions of that.” They have also filmed another major moment, which plays out in this week’s back-to-back episodes. Appelbaum reveals that the survivors at the clearing have their own prehistoric predicament: “[They’re] in the middle of a migration path.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for La Brea Season 2, Episode 7, “1988.”] La Brea left fans with plenty of lingering questions as the midseason finale introduced new twists and turns in the time-traversing series. As they await the show’s 2023 return when Season 2 will continue its run on NBC, showrunner and creator David Appelbaum is helping to answer some of the biggest cliffhangers. In the episode, “1988,” the reunited Harris family was forced to make a big decision as they decided to join patriarch Gavin (Eoin Macken) in 10,000 BC where he hopes to put an end to the sinkholes displacing people from their own places in time. But they left Levi (Nicholas Gonzalez) behind in the 20th century! Appelbaum addresses how that will play out upon the show’s return, as well as what it means for the love triangle with him, Eve (Natalie Zea), and Gavin. Plus, he breaks down how Taamet’s (Martin Sensmeier) threat will loom...

La Brea Season 2 Episode 7 left us with many cliffhangers as the Harris family jumped into the sinkhole leading back to 10,000 BC.

Hello. David. Nice to see you again. I enjoyed this season. I watched the finale. Are Gavin's Visions returning significant to what they will find in 10,000 BC when we return?
The most important thing will be Gavin's vision of Eve's death. That's something that will be a driving force of the story through the back half of the season. It is going to influence the choices that they're making now that they know that Eve's death is a possibility down there.
It's going to increase the drama of whether or not they're going to be able to make it home and the...

NBC’s La Brea opened Season 2 this week by unleashing fresh drama in the form of, yes, a new tribe of jackholes and a pair of warring rhinos. But it also caught viewers off-guard with a personal predicament for Izzy Harris, who is an amputee.

Quantum Leap’s long-rumored return has taken a big leap toward becoming a reality. NBC has given a pilot order to a reboot of the beloved 1990s sci-fi series, which starred Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell.
Written and executive produced by La Brea co-showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt and executive produced by Blindspot creator Martin Gero as well as Quantum Leap creator/EP Don Bellisario and EP/co-narrator Deborah Pratt, the follow-up series is set in present time. It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
Bakula is not attached to reprise his role or produce the new Quantum Leap but is aware of the reboot and has had conversations about potentially getting involved.
