“Oppenheimer,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Last of Us” are among the nominees for the Visual Effects Society (Ves) Awards.
Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” leads the feature film field with seven nominations. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is the top animated contender with seven nominations and 24-time Emmy-nominated drama “The Last of Us” leads the episodic field with six nominations.
“The artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world have come together to create remarkable imagery,” Ves chair Kim Davidson said. “We are seeing best-in-class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of innovation. Updated with video: “[Crowd work] has sort of been a staple thing in VFX for a long time, but I think one of the things that made our show sort of different was the volume and quantity of shots that needed to be done,” said Ted Lasso VFX compositing supervisor Bill Parker at Apple TV+ and Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen award-season event.
Parker is nominated in the Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode category for the 11th episode of the season, titled “Mom City.” The episode is a prime example of Parker’s work on the series, which is focused mainly on creating crowds to populate the football stadiums.
“There’s two different things you’re gonna see when you watch through any of the episodes we do,” says Parker. “There’s either no stadium at all, it’s all empty, or they do sometimes shoot the dugout shots...

Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

The superhero Shazam, formerly known by his beloved golden age name, Captain Marvel, became a fan favorite among readers right from the 40s, partially due to the charm the character brought and partially due to his unique origin. Although creators C.C. Beck and Bill Parker conceptualized the World’s Mightiest Mortal in 1940 with the recently debuted Man of Steel in mind, the departure from conventional superhero origins by making a teenager magically transformed into the all-powerful hero added distinctiveness. Later, as Captain Marvel, aka young Billy Batson, merrily shared his powers among hapless souls, the innovativeness kept adding on. Freddy Freeman and Mary Bromfield were the two major characters with whom the Captain shared his powers. The trio was known as Marvel Family and had their own titles, which became immensely popular.

Warner Bros./New Line/DC’s “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” is expected to make substantially less at the box office than its 2019 predecessor, and that is playing out with Thursday previews as the sequel made $3.4 million from more than 3,400 theaters.
Four years ago, “Shazam!” earned $6 million from Thursday previews en route to a $53.5 million opening weekend, beating projections of a $45 million launch. Heading into this weekend, “Shazam 2” projections have stayed at $35 to 38 million.
While there is still a possibility that this $100 million superhero film could still pass the break-even point from such an opening weekend, the film would have to gather considerable word-of-mouth in the coming weeks to do so, particularly among families looking for a day at the movies as schools have spring break on a rolling basis through late March and early April.

The Oscars are over, but new movies in theaters go on with our third weekend in a row featuring a sequel that’s (sort of) part of a larger franchise. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
In 2019, Warner Bros. decided to make a movie based on the C.C. Beck and Bill Parker superhero, once known as “Captain Marvel,” who debuted in 1940, less than two years after Superman. Although the character hadn’t really been featured in much media, other than a ’70s Saturday morning live action show, DC (and former Cco Geoff Johns) had made a concentrated effort to make the character (redubbed “Shazam!”) more prominent in the comics, even as a big screen movie had been in development by New Line for well over a decade.
That movie opened in April 2019 with an impressive $53.5 million in 4,217 theaters, ultimately grossing $140 million in North America and another $223 million overseas.

When DC Comics revived Captain Marvel in the 1970s, it was out of step with the audience and struggled to find success. Ever since, the publisher has been trying to find a formula to make the character and his world relevant to the readership. With Carol Danvers’ popularity as Captain Marvel ascendant, DC finally capitulated and began calling Billy Batson’s alter ego Shazam to keep the two from being confused.
With Captain Marvel out in March and Shazam out in April, there’s a good reason to rename the latter. (No one back in the day would ever have imagined either getting a big screen treatment or coming out so closely together.) Warner Home Entertainment has released Shazam in all the usual formats this week and it remains a fun, but not perfect film.

If the “Wonder Woman” and “Aquaman” movies represented DC Comics’ first big-screen steps away from the austere color palette of the Zach Snyder movies, “Shazam!” takes us deeply into primary colors in a single bound. There’s still a touch of urban decay and kitchen-table warmth on display — this is by no means Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy” or a candy-colored Cartoon Network production — but this new DC entry has a lovely lightness, both in the visuals and in its tone.
Before the 1940s serials and the 1970s Saturday-morning TV show, “Shazam!” was born in a magazine called Whiz Comics, published by Fawcett and later acquired by the company that would be known as DC Comics. And to use a 1940s expression, there’s a gee-whiz ebullience to the movie that makes it stand out among the last several decades’ worth of caped crusaders.

One of the genre’s earliest and most earnest superheroes comes to the screen at last in a joyous, colorful romp with Shazam!
It’s official: the Zack Snyder era of the Dceu is over once and for all. The dark, brooding, nihilistic tone that the director tried to surgically graft onto the entire breadth of characters he’d been given to work with has been dispensed with. Starting with Wonder Woman -- which partially escaped his grasp -- and continuing with Aquaman, viewers began to see DC superheroes who actually relished their roles as protectors of humanity. And now Shazam! has brought the franchise a complete 180 degrees from where it started, creating a fun, heartfelt, occasionally soaring adventure as far from the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as you can imagine.

We absolutely can’t wait for April 5th when “Shazam!” will be gracing the big screen and will certainly be an uplifting addition to the DC Extended Universe. The second official trailer for the film has dropped and from what we can see, “Shazam!” will be the perfect blend of both action and comedy that spells out box office success!
You can check out the second official trailer below:
About “Shazam!”
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—Shazam!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!

Trailers for Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Shazam!” have been a lot of fun, but so far they haven’t actually shown the big red cheese in action. Until today, thanks to a new promotional clip featuring scenes of the DC superhero fighting the villain Dr. Sivana. Watch it above.
The clip is an edited-down version of footage showed off by “Shazam!” director David Sandberg and producer Peter Safran during a preview event on the Warner Bros. lot last Friday, which also included: an extended look at the Rock of Eternity scene where Billy Batson (Asher Angel) first meets the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) and receives the power of Shazam; more scenes of Shazam (Zachary Levi) getting accustomed to his new powers with the help of his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer); Shazam’s super speed as he tries to stop a robbery; and an longer version of the grocery store scene where Shazam discovers he is bulletproof.

Gangster Squad
Directed by Ruben Fleischer
Written by Will Beall
USA, 2013
At some point, an excess of style only serves to emphasize the hollowness of a story. A director like Martin Scorsese knows how to weave a sprawling tale of vice and amorality while juicing up the proceedings with verve and panache. On the one hand, we get stunning, sometimes bleak visions of humanity like Goodfellas. But sadly, every director isn’t Martin Scorsese. Thus, we get pale imitators inspired by films such as Goodfellas. Case in point: the new crime drama Gangster Squad, which wants to pump up the ultraviolence and pay a juvenile form of respect to film noir classics. However, gory as it is, Gangster Squad just feels empty and bland.

Set in a Post-wwii world, Gangster Squad kick’s off in 1949, at a time when gangsters were running riot in Chicago and New York, but failing to gain a foothold in Los Angeles. Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) intended to change that however, running drugs, guns and prostitutes and taking the City of Angels for all it was worth. In an effort to fight back, Police Chief Bill Parker (Nick Nolte) charges Sgt. John O.Mara (Josh Brolin) with the task of assembling a clandestine squad to undermine and attack Cohen.s operation at every turn. And thanks to the gangster having half of La in his pocket, Parker gives the team the freedom to act outside the rules and regulations of the law. There are no badges, no warrants and no arrests on the Gangster Squad, only Tommy guns and a casual attitude to one.s own personal safety.

Originally set for release last September, Ruben Fleischer’s third feature Gangster Squad was delayed in response to the tragic Colorado theatre shootings so that other scenes could be filmed to replace the ultimately cut theatre shootout sequence. As such, the eagerly awaited noir thriller hits cinemas this week, and although the star studded cast is not utilised as well as it should have been, Fleischer’s film is a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

[May contain slight spoilers]
Towards the end of Gangster Squad, there’s a moment where Josh Brolin’s iron-jawed, principled cop Jon O’Mara and Sean Penn’s rubber-faced mob kingpin Mickey Cohen trade punches. As Ruben Fleischer’s camera yet again spins into slow motion, the fighters are drenched by the flumes of a recently-smashed fountain. The overbearing sentiment to this scene isn’t one of absorption or tension – it’s an acknowledgement that the sequence is incredibly similar to Simon Pegg’s model village fight with Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz. Fleischer’s film has already borrowed liberally from Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Raymond Chandler at this point, so a little more mimicry isn’t too severe an offence.
Yet the Hot Fuzz comparison is an especially unfavourable one for Gangster Squad. Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg lampooned the most high-octane entries in the buddy cop canon, yet their tongue-in-cheek take...

Stars: Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi | Written by Will Beall | Directed by Ruben Fleischer
The director of comedies Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less, Ruben Fleischer tackles something quite different in his star-studded crime drama Gangster Squad. Set in Los Angeles, it is inspired by the true story of a Lapd team, led by Sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) that came to be known as the ‘Gangster Squad’, who’s sole aim was to take down mob boss, Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn. The film also stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Peña.
After returning home from World War II, Los Angeles is not the city Sgt. O’Mara remembers it to be, as it falls into the power of Mickey Cohen, a East Coast gangster, adamant to control the city.

Check out this cool series of behind the scenes photos from Ruben Fleischer's highly anticipated film Gangster Squad. The film has recently gone through some extensive reshoots due to the Colorado theater shooting, and the release date for the film was also delayed. It's now set to be released on January 11th, 2013.
The film stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone and Sean Penn. I'm looking forward to finally being able to watch this movie! It looks like such a great film, and I love the story that it's based on.
Each of the photos include a description from Fleischer.
It was hard to re-create vintage La—there are so many tall buildings now. We had to go to the outer reaches of the city, to neighborhoods like Sylmar.
Me and Nick Notle, who plays the police cheif, Bill Parker.

If Los Angeles is a damsel in distress, Ryan Gosling's just the man to come to the rescue. Warner Bros are about to embark on a resurgence of the period gangster movie, the genre that the studio was built on in the 30′s and 40′s. There have been pictures and stories, but until now we haven’t gotten a good look at Ruben Fleischer’s new, 1940s-set crime thriller Gangster Squad. The trailer has finally arrived and you can take a gander below. brightcove.createExperiences();Gangster Squad stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn in the based-in-truth tale of a hard nut cadre of Lapd cops formed to tackle an influx of gangsters from the East Coast led by Penn’s Mickey Cohen. With the crime lords sweeping through the Southland bringing drugs, guns, prostitution and corruption in their wake, the Los Angeles cops faced more problems with bribery and fraud than ever before. “We changed his name [to Shazam] for a lot of reasons,” said Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. “One of them is that Shazam is the word most associated with the character, so we just felt it made sense — a lot of people already thought that was his name, anyway.” “His place in the world will be far more rooted in fantasy and magic than it ever was before,” Johns also said. I’m hooked on this on-screen Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling romance that seems to be going down right now. I loved their chemistry in Crazy, Stupid, Love which I saw last week and thought was just a damn good dramedy that well, put it this way, if The Kids Are All Right managed a Best Picture nomination, there’s no reason that movie shouldn’t. These are two actors I enjoy and want to see more from together and wouldn’t mind seeing them do a string of films together.

Every week, there's a new and brilliant casting addition to "The Gangster Squad," Ruben Fleischer's highly anticipated cops-and-mafia drama. If you haven’t been reading along, I’ve been gushing about Ruben Fleischer’s upcoming crime drama The Gangster Squad for quite a while. Story details about the cops and gangsters flick about real life gangster Mickey Cohen can be found in my first article about the movie, where it was announced that Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and Ryan Gosling had all been cast in key roles. Penn is in the starring role as Cohen, and Brolin and Gosling are two of the members of the titular gangster squad that is put together to take him down. After hearing that, I didn’t think that life could get much better, but then it did. The second Gangster Squad related bomb that Fleischer dropped on me was that man about town Bryan Cranston would also be joining the cast as a rough and tumble member of the Lapd by way of Texas. Back in 2006, Nick Nolte co-starred in a small sports drama called Peaceful Warrior (not to be confused with the upcoming sports drama Warrior), as a mysterious trainer/gas station attendant named Socrates. It was not a strong film. Or a strong performance. It was, in fact, the end of a near half-decade’s string of not-strong performances in not-strong films.

Briefly: Here's one more reason to be excited about Ruben Fleischer's upcoming '40s-set La 'cops vs. mobsters' story Gangster Squad.
