Spoilers for all of "Orange is the New Black" ahead.
"Orange is the New Black" is among the most important shows of the 2010s. It was not only one of the first series to establish the binge model as a viable release format — for better or worse — but it was also groundbreaking thanks to its diverse cast and the massive range of storylines it juggled at any given time. At its best, the show was riveting, funny, heartfelt, and bold. At its worst, it was still a fun time.
Most notably, few shows have ever felt so distinct from season to season. Season 1 was the fun fish-out-of-water comedy centering firmly around Piper (Taylor Schilling). Season 2 was a riveting prison drama centered largely on the Black inmates like Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Poussey (Samira Wiley), and Suzanne (Uzo Aduba). Season 3 was a surprisingly relaxed, lighthearted period, while season 4 took a brutal turn in the other direction,...

Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.
Their questions, coming as the Jenji Kohan-created series celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its July 11, 2013, premiere, surfaced in a New Yorker story published ahead of SAG-AFTRA announcing an actors strike after the union failed to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) group of studios and streamers. In 2012, Kier-La Janisse published House of Psychotic Women and forever changed the landscape of film analysis. Subtitled An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis, the book is an exhaustive look at films from all genres, each featuring one or more female characters with some degree of mental instability. House of Psychotic Women is split into two sections: memoir and appendix. Janisse begins by examining significant moments in her own life, confronting generational trauma, a troubled childhood, her teenage years as a juvenile delinquent, and her journey to festival programming through the lens of narrative film. Each stage of her life is paired with at least one movie in which she seeks to understand her own experiences by comparing them with a character facing a similar issue. Janisse’s vulnerable and unflinchingly honest writing invites the reader into her psyche while inspiring a deeper look into our own lives.

"I'm just sitting back and... letting life do what it does." Gravitas has released the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy called King of Knives, marking the feature directorial debut of cinematographer Jon Delgado. The title is reference to the tarot card (aka "King of Swords"). No relation to Knives Out, this one is about a New York City family the implodes over three days as they careen through mid-life and quarter-life crises. We've seen plenty of these dysfunctional family comedies before. Described as "a darkly funny take on the modern family," and a film "that two disparate generations can fully relate to." King of Knives stars Gene Pope, Mel Harris, Roxi Pope, Emily Bennett, Kara Young, and Emma Myles. I certainly can appreciate the honesty in this footage, and hopefully there's more of that during the rest of the film. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

The trailer starts off with a Good Morning, Vietnam reference followed by Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) quickly realizing that she’s no longer home and out of her comfort zone. The next we see are bits and pieces of what problems the ladies will face adjusting to a maximum security prison – even...

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

Image Source: Netflix The fifth season of Orange Is the New Black is filled with intense, dramatic moments, but it also has its fair share of levity, oftentimes courtesy of the drugged-out dynamic duo of Leanne (Emma Myles) and Angie (Julie Lake). If you've been wondering about the woman behind everyone's favorite meth head, Angie . . . well, you could probably bump into her on the street and never even know you did it. In fact, that happens to her all the time. In 2016, the actress relayed a story about how a starstruck fan actually asked Julie to take a photo of her with the Oitnb cast because the fan didn't recognize Lake as Angie. But that's the by-product of her fabulous "makeunder" for the show, which actually doesn't take as long as one might think. It turns out her meth teeth are painted on, so it only takes a few minutes...

We waited a long time for the fifth season of Orange Is the New Black, and it certainly did not disappoint. In addition to seeing more of "Skinhead" Helen and the drugged-out dynamic duo of Leanne (Emma Myles) and Angie (Julie Lake), we got a closer look at Carmen "Ouija" Aziza (Rosal Colon). Rosal plays a tough Dominican inmate who gets transferred to Litchfield and becomes part of Maria Flores's gang, but her makeunder definitely doesn't do her justice. Related70+ Awesome Snaps of the Oitnb Cast Being Real-Life Friends Judging from her Instagram photos, Rosal is a lot more glamorous and bubbly in real life. In fact, Rosal says the only thing she and Ouija have in common is their sense of humor. "My character in Orange Is The New Black is strong, intelligent, likes to joke a lot, is not afraid to be violent if you have to rectify a situation or if you have to defend your sisters," Rosal told People En Español in 2016. "What I have in common with my character is that we're both clowns, sometimes. Maybe not in the best situations but we like to laugh." While Rosal's transformation may not be as drastic as the others, we're still not sure if we would recognize her on the street.

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

Firmly over the half-way point into the third season of "Orange is the New Black" I can now confidently say I'm enjoying the unfocused approach it has taken. Last week, I mentioned I have a vested interest in the machinations of McC and the privatization of Litchfield and that still holds true this week even without a season arcing protagonist or antagonist. What "Fear and Other Smells" and "Where My Dreidel Atc" get back to is making me care about the inmates, just not the ones you'd expect. "Fear and Other Smells" focuses its flashback on Alex (Laura Prepon) and it covers very familiar ground. We all know by now that the drug dealer she worked for, and is now in constant fear of, is a dangerous man. We didn't really need to have him reiterate he has a lot of friends to be reminded Alex feels justified in her paranoia of every unfamiliar face.

Finally Orange is the New Black: Season Three has made its way onto Netflix, and I’ve binge watched it. I did this for two reasons, one so I can write this review and most importantly because I love it, I want to see the return of my favourite characters and see what they get up to this season. Now into its third year there is a high expectation for it to deliver, but with such demand, can it live up to what we want?
In the third season we see Alex (Laura Prepon) returning and Piper (Taylor Schilling) up to her old tricks of being in her own little delusional bubble where the world revolves around her. It’s the thing that got her in prison in the first place,...

Among one of the critical successes in original programming for streaming service Netflix has been the show Orange Is The New Black. Created by former Weeds showrunner Jenji Kohan and based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, the show has garnered praise in numerous circles, with Primetime Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award wins to its name.
With the show, which is set in a women’s prison, set to return for a third season, the cast has now released a video where they sing Stop, Don’t Talk to Me. The song, which was released in 2014 and sung by Tre Coast and Lycia Faith, was itself inspired by a Season two episode of Orange Is The New Black, in which Emma Myles’ Leanne taught the opening lyrics to a fellow inmate, complete with accompanying hand gestures. The video can be seen below, with the original clip at the end,...

Wedding white is the new orange. Orange Is the New Black star Lea Delaria is engaged to fashion editor Chelsea Fairless, the actress announced Friday on Facebook. "Despite their concerns about the patriarchal confines of marriage, actor / singer Lea DeLaria & editrix Chelsea Fairless of Brooklyn, New York are pleased to announce their engagement," she posted, alongside a wacky picture of the happy couple Photoshopped with Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor. "No date has been set for the impending nuptials," she continued, "but it's safe to say that it will be the event of the season, or a total s--- show.
