"Sonic the Hedgehog" is one of the most iconic video game franchises in history. The property centers on the titular Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with superspeed who battles the evil scientist Doctor Eggman. Created by Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, Sonic debuted in 1991 on the Sega Genesis and gave the company a mascot that could compete with Nintendo's Mario. Quickly, Sonic became a worldwide phenomenon, helping Sega become a major player in the console wars of the early 1990s and even becoming the first video game character to get a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1993.
The media franchise has since expanded far beyond video games, with Sonic starring in his own comic book series, animated TV shows, and, most recently, a series of highly successful live-action movies — movies that helped break the video game adaptation curse. Still, as popular as the...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might not have received top compliments from critics, but we cannot disagree that it brought us the baddest version of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch. Obsessed with bringing her family back, Wanda turns to dark magic to wander through universes.

With the Darkhold, she was able to transfer her consciousness to a counterpart of herself in other worlds and bend them to their will, even if it meant turning the mighty Illuminati into pasta. Now, a new theory suggests that Wanda might not be the first Marvel character to have dreamwalked in the superhero universe.

However, this reveal has also sparked the interest of God of War fans, who are hoping that the corresponding episode might reveal Kratos’s fate following the events of Ragnarok.

Update: This past week, it was being said by sources close to Ballerina that John Wick director, Chad Stahelski, reshot most of the film without the original director, Len Wiseman. The production is now saying those claims are inaccurate. According to them (who contacted us directly), director Len Wiseman led the additional photography on set in Budapest with producer Chad Stahelski there to help in the creation of action design on the new scenes that would enhance the film and create bigger action sequences. As per usual procedure on films, Ballerina‘s reshoots were not out of the ordinary, and the process had taken place in less than a month.
According to our source, Chad Stahelski’s involvement in building upon key action sequences was important to Wiseman; Stahelski has been an enormous champion of Wiseman from the onset of pre-production and Wiseman is equally appreciative of Stahelski’s support...

When the trailer for "Ballerina" arrived, it promised action sequences that actually looked like they could hold up against those of the "John Wick" movies. The spin-off film, from director Len Wiseman, is set between "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum" and "John Wick: Chapter 4," and stars Ana de Armas as the titular assassin, who sets out for revenge against those that killed her family. Following the lifeless, joyless, and ultimately pointless return to the Wick-verse that was "The Continental," this latest spin-off isn't exactly a guaranteed hit — even with a confirmed Keanu Reeves cameo. But again, the trailer showcased some combat sequences that suggested Wiseman has successfully aped the unique action stylings of franchise director Chad Stahelski -- meaning, "Ballerina" might just deliver on the action front (at the least).
Now, we might finally know why the action in "Ballerina" looks as high-quality and uniquely Stahelskian as it does. In...

Deadpool director Tim Miller suggests that CGI is on the cusp of crossing the uncanny valley – meaning digital characters may soon be indistinguishable from real ones.
Tim Miller has a new animated series coming to Amazon called Secret Level, which uses assets created in Unreal 5 Engine to digitally animate a different videogame world in each episode.
Much of the recent chatter about the series (since its splashy Gamescom announcement) has centred on the fact that one of the episodes focuses on Concord, Sony’s hyped online arena shooter that released on the 23rd August and performed so poorly that it was cancelled just two weeks later.
While the Deadpool director has expressed hope that Secret Level may in some way help to revive Concord’s fortunes, he’s also excited about lots of other elements of the upcoming series, including the use of Unreal Engine 5 to create the animation in the show.

“Fortnite” creator Epic Games kicked off its Unreal Fest event Tuesday with the debut of Unreal Engine 5.5 and previews for new features of the massively popular video-game-building tool. Used to produce not only Aaa game titles, but also big-budget VFX-heavy shows like “The Mandalorian” and Tim Miller’s upcoming Amazon animated video game-focused anthology TV series “Secret Level,” Unreal Engine is Epic’s pride and joy and the service is adding more features to make it an attractive production tool for Hollywood.
Top of mind for Epic today was Unreal’s new experimental “MegaLights,” which “enables you to use orders of magnitude more lights than ever before—all movable, dynamic, with realistic area shadows and the ability to light volumetric fog.

The Terminator franchise has had a rough go ever since T2: Judgment Day. Terminator 3 had its moments like the crane chase, but Salvation and Genysis did virtually nothing to enhance the flailing series. So what about Dark Fate? That at least reunited Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton! Well, if you ask James Cameron, Terminator: Dark Fate is the only standout outside of his own movies.
Speaking with Empire as the original Terminator turns 40 this year, James Cameron leant his defense to Dark Fate, which he called “cracking” although couldn’t help but note that it still doesn’t match the first two movies. Even still, he does put it in an easy third place. Still, he knows there are issues with Dark Fate – which he served as producer on – that may not have been anticipated going in. “We achieved our goal. We made a legit sequel to a...

"Terminator" fans are eating well in 2024, thanks to "Terminator Zero." Mattson Tomlin's anime series is not only one of the best sci-fi shows of the year, but it also takes the "Terminator" franchise back to its cyber-horror roots while at the same time actually enriching its themes about fate and why humanity even deserves not to be wiped out by the machines in the first place. That's a welcome reprieve for a sci-fi property whose central storyline has been "eating its own tail for a very long time ('Terminator: Dark Fate' innocent)," to quote Bj Colangelo in her "Zero" review for /Film.
Like Bj, though, I'm also a "Dark Fate" apologist. The 2019 movie saw James Cameron working on the "Terminator" franchise for the first time since "Terminator 2," and it showed. While "Dark Fate" doesn't reach the same bar as Cameron's 1984 "The Terminator" and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day,...

After helming 2016's Deadpool, Tim Miller found himself in high demand. When creative differences with Ryan Reynolds resulted in the filmmaker walking away from the Merc with the Mouth's sequel, he set about rebooting the Terminator franchise alongside James Cameron.
The filmmaker had given Terminator Genisys his seal of approval in a featurette, sharing praise he's since admitted regretting due to what a colossal disappointment it ended up being.
While Dark Fate received positive reviews from fans and critics, it didn't make an overly impressive impact at the box office. Earning $62 million in North America and $261 million worldwide, the blockbuster was deemed a flop and the iconic franchise was put back on the shelf for what felt like the umpteenth time.
Cameron was hands-on with the latest movie, though, perhaps explaining why it was much better received than the underwhelming Rise Of The Machines, Salvation, and Genisys.

Almost everyone in Hollywood has participated, or at least been reported to be participating, in a superhero property. It's simply the latest big trend that employs everyone in a union (unless you're a VFX worker), just like crime procedurals employed every actor who later broke big once upon a time. Whether a celebrated and legendary actor like Harrison Ford, or an indie director like Ryan Coogler, no one is safe from the superhero movie industrial complex.
The latest beloved actor to join a superhero franchise is Kyle Chandler, the greatest dad actor, who has been tapped to star as Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern TV series that is part of James Gunn's fledgling DC universe. In theory, 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate was supposed to be the sequel of fans’ dreams. After the misfires of Rise Of The Machines, Salvation, and Genisys, James Cameron finally returned to his own franchise as producer, teaming up with director Tim Miller to create a bona fide sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day – one bringing back Linda Hamilton as an older Sarah Connor, with Arnold Schwarzenegger on killer-robot duties, all while introducing a whole new cast of younger heroes. But despite solid reviews, Dark Fate suffered a… well, dark fate, failing to capture audiences at the box office. It underperformed, making just over $260 million, and remains the last big-screen outing for the franchise as of now.
But despite the film’s box-office struggles, Cameron remains positive about Dark Fate – particularly Gabriel Luna’s two-in-one, T-800-meets-t-1000 killer baddie, the Rev-9. “I think the Rev-9 was cool as shit,” he tells Empire.

I'm not the biggest fan of the "Deadpool" movies. They're less the advertised superhero parodies and more straight-up action-comedy superhero films, fourth-wall-breaking or not. They have their moments where they don't just play the genre beats, though, and the climax of the first "Deadpool" movie has two such moments.
One is when Wade (Ryan Reynolds) executes his nemesis Ajax (Ed Skrein), disregarding Colossus' (Stefan Kapičić) speech about the rare moments one gets to be a hero. Before that is a classic explosive fight of good vs. evil, complete with a damsel in distress hanging in the balance. The fight isn't as explosive as it could've been though, since Deadpool forgets his duffle bag full of guns in the taxi that he, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) took to the showdown.

Donald Trump called into Fox & Friends this morning, continuing to insist that he won Tuesday’s presidential debate against Kamala Harris yet also that the ABC News event was unfair and “three against one.”
That was a reference to David Muir and Linsey Davis, who in co-moderating also did fact-checks of some of the former president’s wildest claims.
The former president was intent on spinning his performance at the debate, even though he was repeatedly baited by Harris, often sounded angry and went back to his unfounded claim that he won the 2020 election.
The effort to control the narrative started just minutes after the event ended, when both campaigns dispatched their armies of surrogates to the spin room, the Olympic-sized pool area of blue carpet in the Philadelphia Convention Center. The spin room spectacle is an endurance test for campaign talking heads to stick the talking points in the...

The first two Terminator movies are considered masterpieces, and for good reason. They gave us iconic characters, memorable catchphrases, hummable music, the most jaw-dropping action sequences of all time, and a message to humanity about its overreliance on technology. And while James Cameron moved away from the director’s seat so that he could focus on other projects, the Terminator franchise continued to expand via movies, comics, novels, video games, and a TV show. All of these installments have their own dedicated fandoms, except for maybe Terminator: Dark Fate, but let’s be honest, none of them have managed to attain the kind of popularity that those first two movies did. So, it was pretty normal for fans and casual viewers to be apprehensive about a Terminator Netflix series as it didn’t feature everyone’s favorite characters and it was animated. But I’m here to tell you that...

As of this writing, Eli Roth's new action-comedy "Borderlands," based on the popular video game series, has grossed just over $24 million at the box office. This is an abysmal number, given that the film cost an estimated $120 million to make. It's a little too early to call it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, but it's certainly one of the biggest bombs of the year. Given that it was based on a beloved video game property, the failure of "Borderlands" was particularly visible to a mass audience, playing into a long held prejudice against game adaptations. There are only scant great films to have been based on video games, and "Borderlands" certainly isn't one of them.
"Borderlands" received terrible notices, boasting a mere 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 151 reviews. /Film's own Bill Bria praised the film's candy-colored visuals, and enjoyed watching cast members...

Jim Carrey really goes for it in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies. In the third of the trilogy, he’s not just Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, he also plays the character’s own long-lost dad.
Things are about to get weird(er).
This time, Robotnik is forced to join the forces of good to help take down the powerful Shadow the Hedgehog (no relation to Sonic; this one is voiced by Keanu Reeves). But before his does, Eggman has to shave his head and let out his form-fitting suit.
So it’s Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Robotnik vs. Shadow, a “mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before,” the logline reads. “With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”

When "Borderlands" opened in theaters on August 9, 2024, it brought in just $8.6 million — an astonishingly low figure for a film that cost more than $100 million to make. Then, things just went from bad to worse for "Borderlands" at the box office, with the movie seeing an almost unprecedented 73% drop in its second weekend. Thus far, the video game adaptation has made just $21 million on a reported $115 million budget — and that's before the marketing cost is accounted for. A very rough estimate typically puts marketing at around half a film's production budget, so we're looking at a movie that likely cost in the region of $170 million, making less than a quarter of that at the box office ahead of its fast-approaching streaming debut.
With this in mind, you might be starting to see how much of a historic blunder we're witnessing with "Borderlands." But that's just the box office. Plenty of movies...

The first teaser for Secret Level gives video game fans a bit of an animated anthology, so here’s what you need to know about the Prime Video series!
Video gamers are long used to the fact that adaptations of games have historically been a mixed bag. Many movies based on video games were huge flops as the medium didn’t seem to get the respect it deserved. However, recent years have changed that with movies based on The Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog and Uncharted box office hits. There have also been great TV shows based on games such as The Last of Us and the recently ended Halo. For the most part, video game adaptations are on an upswing (Let’s just ignore the disaster of Borderlands).
It does seem that animation is the best medium for games as they’re not as held back on budget...

Tim Miller is overseeing a new animated anthology series, Secret Level, from the creators of Love, Death And Robots. Here’s the first trailer:

The popular videogame Ruiner is the latest title to get turned into a film, with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Wes Ball directing.
There’s little doubt that videogame to film adaptations are back on the Hollywood radar. Sony has created a whole division of its film studio to adapting its popular library of PlayStation games – both past and present – into big, crowd-pleasing movies. Elsewhere, Nintendo saw huge success last year with the release of The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Even Sega is getting in on the act: a report surfaced the other day that the former giant of the games industry was looking to grab yet another 1990s title, Eternal Champions, and turn it into a film. The company is also looking to make a Golden Axe animated series, and hopes to make other games based on its old IPs following the success of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies.

Exclusive: Prime Video is blending video games and animation for one its biggest bets in the adult-animated space to date. According to sources, the streamer has teamed with Tim Miller and his Blur Studio, the creative team behind Netflix’s acclaimed series Love, Death & Robots, for another adult-animated anthology, Secret Level.
Like Love, Death & Robots, whose episodes are based on short stories, video game anthology Secret Level, created and executive produced by Miller, consists of original short stories which are set within the worlds of beloved video games, I hear. Details are scarce but Amazon Games’ New World, Spelunky and PlayStation titles are rumored to be among the games and IP featured on the series, which is expected to be unvealed soon, likely during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. Reps for Prime Video declined comment.
