Jon Glaser—the gearmaster himself—helps tease Jon Glaser Loves Gear Season 2.
Jon Glaser has always been a magnet for the unusual. His TruTV series, Jon Glaser Loves Gear, is one of the comedian’s strangest, most unique projects to date. The series acts like an innocuous unscripted series that focuses on various gear and equipment, but each episode also heads down a bizarre tangent as Jon’s personality and obsession with gear derails the subject at hand. An episode about space gear can somehow organically turn into an installment that looks at plastic surgery and prosthetics as Jon attempts to hide his identity. It’s a stunning hybrid of styles which all amount to a comedy that’s ridiculously silly with absurd set pieces that you won’t see anywhere else on television.

Jon Glaser loves gear. “Jon Glaser” really loves gear.
TruTV’s new series “Jon Glaser Loves Gear,” which premieres Wednesday night, defies classification. It’s a fake reality show about a celebrity who loves cool gadgets, but it includes segments with real people showcasing real cool gadgets. It’s heavily improvised, but with real scripted story tangents, as comedian Jon Glaser, playing an awful version of himself, watches the narrative unravel.
“It is weirdly hard to describe,” Glaser said. “And when people ask, ‘What is gear?’ that has an even wider definition.”
“Jon Glaser Loves Gear” follows the fictional Glaser as he pitches TruTV on the show, which the network quickly greenlights. He finds a sidekick (Steve Cirbus, “Delocated”) and in the first episode, and sets out to go camping. After his wife refuses to play along, he auditions models to play his spouse… and things fall apart once the camping gets started.

If you are not a fan of Delocated yet, then a marathon sitting at home is the only way to digest it. You just have to keep in mind that it gets better once you learn the characters. Jon Glaser has created an awkward comedy with an even more awkward and bizarre premise. A family in federal witness protection gets a deal for a reality TV series. The government lets them move to New York and do the series as long as they always wear their masks. Although this mockumentary is outrageously unbelievable, in today’s world of Kim Kardashian dominated pseudo-reality TV, anything goes. Just remember you have to want to stick it out through the first few episodes.
The pilot opens up with Jon (Glaser) and his family moving with their security detail to New York City. It’s not long before you realize that Jon is a self-absorbed jerk.
