Inspired by, but definitely not closely adapted from, Amy Chozick’s 2018 book Chasing Hillary, The Girls on the Bus may be on Max, but it’s a throwback to a certain type of broad, big-hearted, semi-topical dramedy that TV fans used to associate with The WB.
As a female-forward workplace buddy comedy with soapy undertones, The Girls on the Bus (Chozick and The Vampire Diaries mastermind Julie Plec are credited as creators) is quite good — the casting is strong, the character dynamics appealing. As a show about journalism, The Girls on the Bus is decent — smart about a lot of things, dumb about others, but not disproportionately. As a political thriller, The Girls on the Bus is mostly a crock.
It comes together as a whole that’s not really a guilty pleasure — for the millionth time, stop being guilty about the things you like — but definitely one where you...

True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

Every few months, someone seems to ask either the show’s creator Bryan Fuller or series star Mads Mikkelsen what’s going on with their hoped-for revival of Hannibal. Eight years have gone by since NBC cancelled the television series, which was inspired by characters in novels by Thomas Harris, after its third season, but Fuller, Mikkelsen, and fellow star Hugh Dancy have always let it be known that they’re hoping to reunite to make a fourth season at a new home. Eight months ago, Mikkelsen said, “It’s all about finding a home for it. Of course, we’re running out of time. We can’t wait twenty years, but in the next couple of years, if somebody finds a home, I think we’re all ready to take it up again.” Now, during an interview with Business Insider, Mikkelsen has given an update, saying there’s still...

Almost eight years have gone by since NBC cancelled the television series Hannibal, which was created by Bryan Fuller and inspired by characters in novels by Thomas Harris, after its third season. Ever since, Fuller and stars Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy have been joining fans in hoping that Hannibal will be able to continue on some other network or streaming service someday. Talking to Deadline while on the red carpet for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mikkelsen said there’s still a chance that a Hannibal revival will happen… but they’re running out of time.
Asked if there’s ever any chance he’d play Hannibal again, Mikkelsen told Deadline, “Always a chance. There’s always a chance. It’s all about finding a home for it. Of course, we’re running out of time. We can’t wait twenty years, but in the next couple of years,...

As a horror aficionado and leader of TV’s horror renaissance, Bryan Fuller appreciates the art of subtext. The prolific writer and producer’s new Shudder docuseries, “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” makes a strong case for horror’s queer origins, finding hints of homoeroticism in almost every corner of the genre. Fuller brings an appreciation of queer subtext to all of his work, as fans of “Hannibal” know all too well.
The psychological thriller series, which ran for three seasons from 2013-2015 on NBC, starred Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy as serial killer Hannibal Lecter and criminal profiler Will Graham, respectively. Last year, Mikkelsen shared that he and Dancy shot a few takes where they kissed, but Fuller thought it would be too “obvious.” As fans held out hope for some confirmation of their suspicions that never came,...

In a car conversation, after repeating something that happened to his grandmother during World War II, Yunis (Yul Vazquez) comments to Ralph (Ben Mendelsohn), “Dreams are messages, bro.” Throughout the series, dreams have played an important role in just how whatever spirit that's attacking Cherokee City communicates.
Jessa's dreams of the man who kind of looks like her dad allowed her to pass messages to Ralph, and now other people in Ralph's orbit are having dreams of their own, particularly Jeannie (Mare Winningham). Much like Jessa's dreams, Jeannie's dreams blur the line between electrochemical images in the brain and a dangerous, threatening reality.

HBO premiered The Outsider on January 12 and it serves another helping of Stephen King fare translated to TV. In it, Cynthia Erivo plays private investigator Holly Gibney who uses her uncanny abilities to help police detective Ralph Anderson investigate a gruesome murder of a local boy that has a mysterious force surrounding the case. During HBO session at TCA, Erivo joined the drama’s executive producer/director/star Jason Bateman and executive producer/writer Richard Price via satellite from Tokyo to talk about the role, but she also addressed King’s latest comments about diversity in Hollywood.
Erivo was the only person of color nominated for an Oscar in the acting categories. After the Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, King took to Twitter to comment on the lack of diversity in the categories.

Already off to a promising start in 2019, HBO just added an impressive ensemble for one of their upcoming shows. Jason Bateman’s “The Outsider,” which previously announced its leading man \ Ben Mendelsohn, has rounded out the rest of the main cast with powerhouse performers Cynthia Erivo, Bill Camp, Paddy Considine, Mare Winningham, and Julianne Nicholson.
The series is based on the prolific author’s novel of the same name, which was published in May of last year. (In truest King fashion, that isn’t even his most recent novel — “Elevation” was published just five months later.) It follows the investigation of a crime against a young boy in a small Oklahoma town, only to find that things take on a King-like turn towards the otherworldly.

HBO's TV adaptation of Stephen King novel The Outsider showcases a crime drama with a supernatural horror twist.
Stephen King’s novel The Outsider is becoming a drama series at HBO, which has given the adaptation a 10-episode order.
The story of The Outsider puts a mind-blowingly monstrous twist on traditional murder fiction. Here, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) fields an investigation in the fictional Oklahoma town of Flint City that upends the local populace when a well-liked local man, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), is arrested for the shockingly malicious murder of an 11-year-old boy. While a mountain of evidence – including DNA and fingerprints – make the case seem open-and-shut, Maitland vehemently swears his innocence; an idea that gains momentum when his alibi – of being out of town at a conference – checks out, leading the investigation to a potentially supernatural turn.
Onboard as executive producers are Richard Price,...

Bryan Fuller's latest tease into the world of his new CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery features an alien makeup test. We know quite a bit about the project so far, what we don't know is who will be in it. The new series is set to premiere January 2017 and David Semel was recently announced as the director of the first episode. We found out what the official name of the series means to Fuller and that the show would be streamed on Netflix outside the U.S. (Bell Media for Canada). We also got our first look at the new ship. The sixth episode of Lost was the first Sun episode. “House of the Rising Sun”, which originally aired on October 27, 2004, is one of the best episodes of the show’s first season, and it has stuck with me as the moment when Sun became a fully-formed and truly fascinating character, which she would remain until the end of the series.
Let’s talk about how rare this is. Sun is played by Yunjin Kim, a Korean actress who moved to the United States when she was 10, got some decent acting work, moved back to South Korea to star in films like Shiri (considered South Korea’s first blockbuster), and then was cast in Lost. In terms of representation on television, female Asian characters are hugely underserved, and Kim was one of the most consistently present Asian actresses on American TV for six seasons on Lost and now two seasons on Mistresses.

So, I’ve been a bad horror TV fan, I’ve let Hannibal slip through my fingers. It’s not that I’m not interested. I actually watched half of the first season. It’s just that I have so many different shows to keep up with, some for review here on the site, and some because I’ve invested so much of my life in them, and on top of that, piles upon piles of Blu-rays and DVDs to review, that I just couldn’t find the time to keep up with this show. That’s about to be rectified, as season 2 is about to hit home video. I’ll catch up on the first season by the time the review copies go out, though, so expect a review of the second season on or around the date of release, which we have learned is the 16th of September.

The age of Stephen King movies and TV series is here! Here are all the King projects, both for big and small screens, in the works!
It's no accident that Stephen King is one of the most heavily-adapted writers in horror movie history. From horror gross-outs and intense psychological thrillers to far-out sci-fi romps and ambitious horror epics like It Chapter One and Chapter Two, there's a King movie or TV show for everyone.
It certainly helps that King is also one of the most prolific and successful writers working today. Since 1974, with the publication of Carrie, his debut novel about a troubled girl with telekinetic powers, King has been raising the bar of weird fiction. He certainly has some of the best human villains and supernatural villains of all-time.
Perhaps it's his B-movie sensitivity...

Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: NBC When it comes to television I'm behind most everyone in the world. I just can't keep up with everything that's supposedly good on television and continue watching as many movies as I watch in any given week. There just isn't enough time. However, when I like something I stick with it and in the case of "Hannibal", I watched the first episode of the second season the day after it aired back at the end of February. It was largely as I remembered the first season ending -- snowy, bloody, gruesome, metaphorical, etc. However, I just wasn't feeling it so I didn't want to force the issue. So, over the course of the second season I let the DVR fill up with all thirteen episodes and over the last few days I watched those final twelve episodes. I was riveted and love how each...

Around this time last year I wrote a piece gushing about the operatic ghoulishness of NBC’s Hannibal. This Season carnage maestro Bryan Fuller and his merry band of dismemberists returned to outdo their own impressive bodycount and mess with our minds, expectations, and appetites. This week the season finale promises to explain the mind-boggling fight-to-the-death that opened the season, and presumably to send the story off in another unexpected direction for the eagerly anticipated – and recently announced – Season 3.
As we near the bloody finish, let’s look back at a few of the moments that we will never be able to get out of our heads, even with the assistance of a bonesaw.
(in roughly chron order)
1. Jack Attacks Hannibal
The season started with a bang, as Jack Crawford (Lawrence Fishburne) appeared at Hannibal’s (Mads Mikkelsen) house – not to sup on his delicious, homemade gourmet meals, but to fuck his shit up.

Soup's on! NBC has decided to renew their low-rated Friday night series Hannibal for a third season.
Based on the Red Dragon novel by Thomas Harris, Hannibal revolves around the early relationship between FBI investigator Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a forensic psychiatrist who becomes an infamous cannibalistic serial killer. Others in the cast of this thriller series include Caroline Dhavernas, Hettienne Park, Laurence Fishburne, Scott Thompson, and Aaron Abrams.
The series had poor ratings last season but the network brought it back for a second year anyway. The ratings have dropped even lower this time around (by 23% in the demo), making it the network's lowest-rated scripted series. Still, it's been renewed.
Word is that the show was likely renewed because of the unique deal that NBC has with the show's studio. Under the deal,...

First, Laurence Fishburne discusses his character, whether Hannibal's the devil, and why the audience has an advantage on Jack Crawford.
Up next are Hettienne Park and Aaron Abrams, who talk with Thompson about rumors and working in the lab together.

There's a chink in Hannibal's dramatic excellence, Laura argues: the show's treatment of its women...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 Futamono
At this point, I don’t think it’s a secret that I am really enjoying Hannibal and think it’s excellent both from a technical and story-telling viewpoint. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that it’s perfect. In fact, it has one glaring issue that I otherwise try to look past, but this week’s Futamono highlighted it rather spectacularly.
That issue is women.
I get that this is a show primarily about male characters: Will Graham, Jack Crawford, and of course, Hannibal Lecter. But let’s be clear: just because a show’s writers choose to focus on a limited number of characters does not mean that we should expect the rest of the characters to be one-dimensional or otherwise throwaway.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 5 “Mukozuke”
Directed by Michael Rymer
Written by Ayanna A. Floyd and Steve Lightfoot & Bryan Fuller
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on NBC
After her encounter with Hannibal in last weeks cliffhanger, the chances of Beverly coming out alive were extremely slim. But while her death doesn’t come with much of a surprise, the reveal of her fate is shocking, to say the least. Kudos to showrunner Bryan Fuller and Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Rymer, who directed “Mukozuke,” an episode crammed with stunning and unsettling images, and a tour-de-force performance from Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne.
Each and every week, Fuller and co. outdo themselves. Hannibal didn’t just kill Beverly Katz, he’s taken her kidneys, sliced her up in several pieces, and preserved her body in a grotesque tableau - a tableau which mirrors her clinical and scientific persona and that takes inspiration from the work of artist Damien Hirst.

Last season, NBC renewed Hannibal for a second season -- despite poor ratings. This time around, it's on Friday nights. Will the ratings be good enough for it to be renewed for a third season or, will it be cancelled instead. Stay tuned to find out.

“Mukozuke,” the title of “Hannibal’s” fifth episode of season two, is “a sliced dish of seasonal sashimi.” I’m waiting for the day that one of the seemingly random Japanese titles doesn’t apply to the episode, but sadly for Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park), tonight’s does. Too well. We pick up the morning after last episode; Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) is making breakfast, while Will (Hugh Dancy) is being served his. We go back and forth between Hannibal’s fancy kitchen and the Bshci cell block. Hannibal hands Jack (Laurence Fishburne) a plate of fluffy yellow eggs and bacon, while Will is handed a [...]

If you haven't watched "Takiawase," this past Friday's episode of "Hannibal," and don't want to be spoiled, then don't read on. If you have, then you know that "The Good Wife" isn't the only series to have recently set fans aflutter by offing a regular character. At the end of the March 21st episode, Special Agent Beverly Katz, the crime scene investigator played by Hettienne Park that Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) had managed to coax into looking into his case again, began to come around to the idea that it's actually Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) who's the serial killing cannibal. She broke into his house and discovered damning offal evidence, then discovered Hannibal's murder dungeon, and then discovered him. And as the fight scene that kicked off the season made clear, Hannibal's no slouch when it comes to combat -- so when he hit the lights and darted away,...

"Hannibal" Season 2 killed a main character, and fans have not been pleased about it.
But it's not just the death of Beverly Katz (Hettienne Park) in "Takiawase" that upset some fans -- charges of sexism and racism were leveled after the show killed off a strong, female, Asian character.
Only a few days after Beverly discovered the awful truth behind Hannibal Lecter -- and then immediately paid the price for it -- actress Park has a response in a blog posted on Tuesday (March 25).
"I thought maybe it'd be productive to talk about rather than ignore it," Park says at the beginning of her personal blog.
"[Bryan] Fuller cast me in a role that I didn't think I had a chance in h*** of getting," she continues. "I rarely if ever see minorities, minority women, let alone Asian women, get to play characters like Beverly Katz."
Despite disagreeing with the fan reaction,...

Don't be put off by Hannibal's gore, says Laura, the real horror in this show has nothing to do with blood...
This review contains spoilers.
2.4 Takiawase
Of all the shows on TV, Hannibal would be among the very last I would have imagined taking up the “dying with dignity” moral Gordian knot. But not only did Fuller raise the question, he turned it into one of the more horrific episodes thus far on the show.
Kudos to him for the excellent casting of Amanda Plummer as this week’s psychopath, Katherine Pimm. While the episode focused only tangentially on the case in front of the team, we still got a deeply disturbing portrayal of the kind of Angel of Death psychotic who regularly makes appearances on shows like Criminal Minds and CSI (fill-in-the-city). These killers often murder those who they believe wish for...

Several rather creepy photos and a preview of next week's Episode 2.04 of "Hannibal," entitled "Takiawase," have arrived; and if you're curious as to just what the heck "Takiawase" means, we've already looked it up for you so read on!
We're not sure what it has to do with the episode, but according to Dictionary Central (how could we not source them with a name like that?), it's "a mixture of firm vegetable pieces... each cooked separately in separate pans until al dente, mixed with fried cubes of tofu and flavoured with a light soya sauce."
Knowing Dr. Lecter, we're going to assume he'll be frying up something other than tofu.

Review Laura Akers 4 Mar 2014 - 07:25
Hannibal's season two opener looks prepared to deliver on the rich promise of season one. Here's Laura's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Kaiseki
When I wrote an article last month positing Hannibal as the best network television show in more than a decade, I have to admit to being a little worried. It’s unusual for the first series of any show to be truly great - most are still trying to find their footing. And of the few that are that good, it’s not unusual to find that the quality cannot be maintained (think Twin Peaks). So I’ve largely been holding my breath for the last few months, hoping that Fuller would be able to match in series two the powerful yet subtle storytelling of series one, and not make a liar out of me.
I should not have worried.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 1 “Kaiseki”
Directed by Tim Hunter
Written by Bryan Fuller
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on NBC
The end of the first season of Hannibal left Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) locked up in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Season 2 serves a promising start as Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) wine and dine on the episode title kaiseki, a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. Following his arrest for the murders that took place in season one, Will finds himself in a tricky situation where he has to try and prove his innocence while trapped in a cell, and while suffering from temporary memory loss. Hannibal Lecter steps into Will Graham’s shoes as the new FBI criminal profiler, and Will struggles to remember how exactly Hannibal framed him for the crimes Hannibal clearly committed.
The opening of “Kaiseki,” features a bloody, fight-to-the-death sequence between Crawford and Lecter.
