London, May 5 (Ians) Manchester City have the chance to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League this weekend in what could be a decisive round of matches at both the top and bottom of the table.
Pep Guardiola’s side host Leeds United, who this week brought in Sam Allardyce to replace Javi Gracia as head coach, following a disastrous April which saw them lose five out of seven matches and concede 23 goals.
Allardyce’s first job is to stop the flood of goals, but that won’t be easy against a rival boasting Erling Haaland in attack. The only good news for Leeds is that City will have to keep one eye on next Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Real Madrid and Guardiola will be keen to keep his key players as sharp as possible.

London, April 28 (Ians) Manchester City can go to the top of the Premier League, albeit for just over 48 hours when they visit Fulham on Sunday afternoon, while league leader Arsenal doesn’t play Chelsea until Tuesday evening.
City produced one of the best displays of the season to beat Arsenal in a game that most consider to be a title decider on Wednesday night, with Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland running riot against a rival that was a yard slower in key moments.
The 4-1 win didn’t flatter Pep Guardiola’s side, but it will count for little unless they are able to take three points from their visit to play Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Guardiola played a more direct football against Arsenal, using Haaland’s power to control long passes, but could return to their more common passing game against a rival likely to sit much deeper than Arsenal did,...

London, April 26 (Ians) A powerful header from defender Tyrone Mings gave Aston Villa a 1-0 win at home to Fulham, lifting them to fifth in the Premier League.
Mings’ goal saw Villa get back to winning ways after a 1-1 draw away to Brentford at the weekend, and Unai Emery’s side now has six wins and a draw in their last seven matches, reports Xinhua.
Villa dominated the game with 14 shots, but only three on target, against a rival that had only one effort in the entire game.
Wolverhampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, taking a huge step closer to retaining their top-flight status, while inflicting the first defeat on Palace since Roy Hodgson returned as coach.
Joachim Andersen’s own goal put Wolves ahead in the third minute when he redirected Ruben Neves’ corner into his own net under pressure.

London, April 17 (Ians) Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to four points over Manchester City, who have a game in hand, after a dramatic afternoon saw them draw 2-2 at West Ham’s London Stadium.
Arsenal looked to be cruising to a comfortable win when Gabriel Jesus put them ahead over David Moyes’ strugglers after seven minutes, and Martin Odegaard doubled the lead three minutes later, reports Xinhua.
West Ham dug in and got back into the match in the 33rd minute, thanks to Said Benrahma’s penalty. Bukayo Saka had the chance to again extend Arsenal’s lead from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute but sent his effort well wide.
That was a decisive miss, as West Ham went down the other end and Jarrod Bowen scored what turned out to be the final goal of the game, although Michail Antonio...

London, April 16 (Ians) Manchester City put the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 3-1 win at home to Leicester City on Saturday evening.
Although Leicester appointed Dean Smith as coach until the end of the season, the new man in the dugout could only watch as City raced into a 3-0 lead, with John Stones lashing home a volley in the 5th minute, reports Xinhua.
Erling Haaland converted a penalty, given for handball in the 13th minute and the striker netted his 47th goal of the season with just 25 minutes on the clock, thanks to a simple finish after a Kevin de Bruyne assist.
Kelechi Iheanacho pulled a goal back against his former club with 15 minutes left to play
Manchester United were the big winners in the race for a top-four finish without kicking a ball as Newcastle United and Tottenham both lost.

London, April 14 (Ians) Something has to give in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime when Aston Villa entertain Newcastle United in what promises to be a vital game in the battle for Europe.
Newcastle travel to Villa Park with five wins in their last five matches, while Aston Villa climbed up to sixth last weekend after their fourth consecutive win, as they continue to improve under the guidance of Unai Emery. Aston Villa will be without influential forward Leon Bailey with a thigh injury but have Ollie Watkins in form with nine goals in 11 games.
Tottenham will be watching that result closely ahead of their home game against Bournemouth, who have shown their battling qualities in recent weeks.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will again be Tottenham’s main threat as they continue their efforts for a top-four finish, a Xinhua report said.

London, April 10 (Ians) The race for the Premier League title got closer as league leaders Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Liverpool.
The draw reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points over Manchester City, who have nine games left to play, while Arsenal have eight, reports Xinhua.
After half an hour, Arsenal looked to be cruising to end a wait of over 10 years for a win at Anfield at halftime when they led through goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool in the 42nd minute.
Salah then missed a penalty, but Roberto Firmino’s 87th-minute penalty saved a point for Liverpool and further opened up the title race.
Erling Haaland returned to fitness with two goals as Manchester City kept up their challenge with a 4-1 win away to bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday evening.

London, April 2 (Ians) Manchester City kept their calm after falling behind, to roar back and beat Liverpool 4-1 in a result that very much keeps them in the race for the Premier League title.
Although Mohamed Salah poached a goal for Liverpool in the 17th minute, Julian Alvarez, who was in the side for injured Erling Haaland, levelled 10 minutes later and then helped Riyad Mahrez set up Kevin de Bruyne to put City ahead in the first minute of the second half.
Ilkay Gundogan then put the result beyond doubt when he made it 3-1 in the 53rd minute after Alvarez’s shot had been blocked and the impressive Jack Grealish got the goal he deserved in the 74th minute after exchanging passes with De Bruyne.
“When we conceded the goal, we were playing really well. Of course, they are always a threat in the transitions, but we played really well in all departments.

Newcastle United have completed a £12 million deal for Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend.
The England international was pictured arriving at Newcastle Airport on Tuesday evening and spent the majority of Wednesday at United’s Benton training base completing his medical, before signing a five-and-a-half year deal.
The 24-year-old has been frozen out of the first team picture at White Hart Lane this season, turning out for Spurs’ U21 side over the last four months.
Townsend’s first team opportunities have been limited to a couple of Europa League outings and just 64 minutes of Barclays Premier League football this season. Although he has, somehow, remained a regular in the England squad under Roy Hodgson.
Newcastle’s need for some width has been apparent for some time. While Moussa Sissoko has the right winger role nailed down, United have tried many options down the left.

In football these days it’s not unusual for someone who had no success on the pitch to be a genius in the dugout. Many of the most successful managers in the modern game barely know how to kick a ball. Sir Alex Ferguson may have had a modestly successful career as a striker but the likes of Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson achieved nothing in the game before turning to management.
Why is that so many world class managers never played a high level, while so many world class players can’t seem to manage their way out of a paper bag? We may never know the reason, but maybe we can study the most egregious examples of managerial laughing stocks to find out why these legendary players failed so badly at management.

Jonjo Shelvey will travel to Newcastle on Tuesday for a medical after the Magpies agreed a £12 million deal with relegation rivals Swansea City, according to reports.
The 23-year-old international midfielder had fallen down the pecking order in South Wales, but he looks set to get his career back on track and stake his claim to make England’s Euro 2016 squad.
The Magpies have already tied up a £5 million deal for French midfielder Henri Saivet as boss Steve McClaren looks to strengthen his squad in order to avoid the drop.
Shelvey will operate in the centre of midfield, throwing Cheick Tiote’s future into doubt, with some reports claiming that Shanghai Shenhua have tabled an £8 million bid for his services.
But regardless of what happens with Tiote, Newcastle have almost certainly got their man, Shelvey. The former-Liverpool academy product has been capped 6-times for England under Roy Hodgson,...

Newcastle United are looking to recruit at least seven players this summer – with Manchester City defender Micah Richards expected to be Steve McClaren’s first signing as Magpies boss.

As often happens after England’s biennial tournament humiliation, the British press and public call for an injection of young blood. This was perhaps louder than ever following this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. The problem is, there isn’t always a hotbed of talent to pick from, especially when the domestic league is full of so much money and foreign purchases.
Nevertheless, coach Roy Hodgson has the task of finding such talent to replace the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Glen Johnson, Michael Carrick and Phil Jagielka. So far, the revolution has introduced Calum Chambers, Nathaniel Clyne, Fraser Forster and John Stones to the Three Lions but, going into 2015, who is next?
When looking for new internationals, it was a shock to see so many average to mediocre players that already have one or two caps, therefore ruling them out of this list.

Just as Roy Hodgson has released his England squad for the upcoming (annoyingly distracting) European qualifiers, French manager Didier Deschamps has put his own selection out, and there’s no place for Remy Cabella.
Obviously, he’s suffering at the minute for a lack of first team action having been dropped in the wake of some inefficient performances, and kept out of the team by more natural wide-men. Inevitably, he will be back in the Newcastle team, especially with that high price tag to his name, but Deschamps has avoided picking players who aren’t in form (for the most part.)
When questioned as to why Cabella was snubbed, French football journalist Jano Resseguié, who works for Rmc responded that he simply wasn’t getting enough game time on Tyneside, and that it was worrying for him:
@MohamedTERParis il ne joue quasiment plus avec #Newcastle c'est inquiétant...

Another England squad, another snub for most of the North East’s best English players. No surprise there then, but once again Roy Hodgson has included some players who seem to be being picked not on merit, but on their names.
Yes, Rolando Aarons is not quite match fit at the minute, and he’s not played a great deal of football this season, but as a substitute for England, he would be a massive secret weapon, particularly as the squad is so set up for pace. But the best he gets is a place in the U20 squad – a waste of time.
And what of Jack Colback and Steven Taylor, two of the hardest working stars of Newcastle’s five game unbeaten run in all competitions?
In truth, Colback and Taylor aren’t the most likely of England candidates, though both have attracted selection calls in the past,...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers looks set to rest both legendary captain Steven Gerrard and 19-year-old superstar Raheem Sterling for the trip to Real Madrid in tonight’s Champions League clash at Santiago Bernabeu. It is a decision that will likely divide opinion with Reds fanatics across the globe, and one that the Northern Irishman risks a potential backlash with. There are certainly advantages and disadvantages behind it.
Advantages
If we’re being honest, even the most ardent Liverpool supporter would struggle to believe they will get anything from the game. Rodgers’ men are in a terrible run of form- they have really only played well once so far this season, against Tottenham- while the Spanish giants have a, quite frankly, ridiculous attacking unit.

Sadly for Liverpool fans, the start of the Premier League in 1992 coincided with the end of twenty years of dominance by the Reds: the 1970s and 1980s had been bossed by them, but now they had to sit back and watch bitter rivals Manchester United conquer all that stood before them.
Despite this, there have still been numerous impressive campaigns by Liverpool over the last 22 years. Ok, that elusive first league title since 1990 continues to elude them, but considering their expectations have been lower than in previous decades, they have achieved great things at times. Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers have all created excellent Reds teams during their time in charge- the hope is that the latter will turn his current crop into champions one day- becoming one of the country’s most formidable teams along the way.

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have suffered numerous highs and lows. Graeme Souness and Roy Hodgson both did their level best to drag the club into obscurity during their respective reigns as manager, while Gerard Houlller, Rafa Benitez and, currently, Brendan Rodgers, have all come close to bringing the glory days back to Anfield.
Throughout that time, some wonderful players have represented the Reds. Whether it be commanding centre-backs, world-class midfielders or lethal strikers, Liverpool have had it in abundance. The hardest thing is whittling down all those great players to a single best starting 11.
Who makes the cut up front out out of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez? Which midfield enforcer gets the nod out of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano?
Here is Liverpool’s Greatest XI Of The Premier League Era……….

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have never been reluctant to spend money. Brendan Rodgers spent over £100m during the most recent summer transfer window, while the likes of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez also broke the bank during their time in charge.
Between them and fellow Reds managers during the Premier League era Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, they have signed many players for hefty fees, some of whom have been roaring successes and others who have failed spectacularly.
On the flip side, there are those players who have ended up being signed on the cheap, certainly in terms of their respective ability, before becoming Reds heroes and, in a few cases, legends.
With that in mind, here are the 11 Liverpool Premier League Signings Who Proved To Be Bargains.

Ahead of Newcastle’s must-win game against Swansea City – a tough ask to say the least – Alan Pardew gave a short interview with Sky Sports News to get his excuses in early.
Talking about the change of system and personnel that he oversaw as part of an attempt to freshen things up and take advantage of the possession his side have enjoyed, Pardew also spoke about one of Swansea’s individual stars. And the name should ring some bells for anyone keeping track of the hundreds of thousands of players Newcastle were linked to in the summer.
In between insisting that Gabriel Obertan deserves his starting slot, and that Papiss Cisse starts because he had scored two wonder goals in the past at the Liberty, the manager praised Jonjo Shelvey for getting into the England squad.

“England are at an all-time low.. and the truth is nobody really cares.”
Those were the hard-hitting words by current Millwall and former Crystal Palace manager, Ian Holloway in a recent Daily Mirror article, and it seems he might not be wrong. A lot has been made about the attendance of 40, 181 spectators during 1-0 friendly win versus Norway, but as Sam Wallace of the Independent highlighted, coverage about it was slightly exaggerated considering that England’s home crowds are traditionally among the best in the world, despite the team’s historic lack of success:
“The fact that this week’s crowd has become a stick with which to beat Hodgson and the Fa has more to do with the historically healthy size of England’s home support, rather than the lack of it.”

Everton defender John Stones will make his first cap for England in tonight’s international friendly with Norway. He is one of five players in manager Roy Hodgson’s squad who are aged 22 or under, with Arsenal midfield duo Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Manchester United’s Phil Jones also named in the team.
Uncapped midfielder Jack Colback missed out through injury while Arsenal’s new signing Danny Welbeck is also sidelined after picking up a knock in training. Goalkeeper Ben Foster is another casualty after injuring his thumb, and has returned to his club West Brom as a “precautionary measure”.

Player ratings for EA Sport’s upcoming football simulation game FIFA 15 are some of computer gaming’s worst-kept secrets with a series of leaks finding their way through the many porous cracks of the internet a good month before the game’s official UK release on September 26th.
Already we’ve seen alleged leaked player ratings for the stars of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United while yesterday we unearthed a list purporting to show Barcelona and Real Madrid’s scores. Some of these ratings were as you might expect, while others, others were well off the mark.
Long-term fans of the FIFA franchise will tell you player ratings are a pretty big deal. Scored out of 100, publishers EA assign a score value to each and every single player on the game based on their real-life counterpart’s performances in 2013-14, which dictates how...

Ahead of England’s next inevitable big tournament failure in two years, Roy Hodgson faces a problem that wasn’t his own creation. All of his midfielders seem to be retiring, and he can’t convince any of them to put aside their weary legs – as he did when selecting them for the World Cup – to allow him to continue choosing players based on their England mythology rather than their form.
But now that Lampard, Gerrard and Carrick (pretty much) have retired, Hodgson will now have his work cut out in actually scouting players during the season, which is possibly why the manager was to be found taking in the Aston Villa vs Newcastle game at the weekend, amid accusations that he was lost on his way to a top four game. As it happens, Hodgson had his eye on a couple of players on show – suspiciously French sounding Villa midfielder Fabian Delph,...

Spurs left back Danny Rose has received a shock call-up to Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad.
Injuries to Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs have left an opening in the left back slot, with the only fit recognised player in that position being Leighton Baines following Ashley Cole’s retirement.
The call-up emphasises a dramatic change in fortunes for Rose, who was thought to be nothing more than a squad player at White Hart Lane this season after the Lilywhites signed Ben Davies from Swansea City. However, having signed a new five year contract at the club, he has started the season very well and is currently their first choice left back.
He is joined in the national squad by his club team-mate Andros Townsend – a player who hasn’t seen much action at all this season and who missed the...

On current evidence England are certainly unlikely to match Fa Chairman Greg Dyke’s ambition of winning the 2022 tournament, much less the next one.
From a personal perspective, supporting and watching England with various levels of passion since the 1996 European Championship – the 2014 exit, didn’t give a similar gut-wrenching feeling as South Africa 2010 or failing to qualify for EUR0 2008. It was probably the most dour tournament departure of the last 18 years and it takes England a step closer to the embarrassing mark of 50 years, since the lone 1966 international triumph.
However, before the tournament disappointments, fact is during the 2013/14 domestic season many young English players performed for their clubs & in the early weeks of the 2014/15 season. Roy Hodgson failing to get them to replicate such form in Brazil doesn’t render their talents invalid.

When Roy Hodgson named a youthful squad for Brazil 2014, the nation was excited about seeing the next generation of young players gain valuable experience, without the pressure and expectation of success. But then, just two games later, the squad had sagged badly under the usual weight of expectation, losing to a poor Italian side and to a spirited, tenacious Uruguayan side that were yet to taste their controversy, and Roy Hodgson’s men were unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament, with footballing heavyweights Costa Rica advancing to the group stages.
So just how then did the team that had no pressure to succeed manage to not only fail to meet expectation, but to cause an entire nation to roll their eyes and collectively smack their hands against their foreheads in despair? Yes, this is England, and England seem forever doomed to repeat the gloom...

England’s first World Cup group stage exit since the 1958 tournament in Sweden has predictably lead to an extensive post-mortem analysis from the British media. Similar to the 2010 exit and many competitions after the nation’s lone international triumph in 1966, the reasons for failure are being regurgitated from the past, along with some interesting new insinuations.
Some of the old rationales include the lack of enough English players in the Premier League, the need for a winter break, a suggestion to copy the B-league system from other successful European nations, encourage more qualified coaches, better youth development and eradicate the obsession with having only one star player.
On the back of this latest failure, some interesting new permutations have appeared: the Messiah complex by Jonathan Wilson of the Guardian, the Telegraph’s Jonathan Liew’s thoughts on market capitalism and the greedy club theory that includes the...

It’s fair to say that 2014 has been a good year for Luke Shaw.
Following a breakout campaign for Southampton the teenager has seen his career go from strength to strength as he emerges as one of England’s brightest young prospects.
Part of a young and gifted Saints squad last term, Shaw played a pivotal role in the club finishing eighth place – their highest ever Premier League finish – and was named in the Pfa Premier League Team of the Year for 2013–14.
Shaw’s fine performances at club level were also rewarded by a place in England manager Roy Hodgson’s 23-man World Cup squad this summer, followed by a lucrative move to Manchester United in June.

Escape to Victory didn't set the world alight on its initial release in 1981, but as the decades have ticked on the film has firmly cemented itself as a cult favourite among fans of film and football.
Now, this potent mix of The Great Escape and underdog sports tale is in line for a remake with Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman at the helm. Liman will surely play it straight in the redo, but the original film featured a glorious mix of big movie stars of the day (Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine), ageing football icons who'd taken a paycheque in the Us (Pelé) and Ipswich Town players (hey, they were big in the '80s!).
With that in mind, Digital Spy has picked a brand new Victory 2014 starting XI ready for 90 minutes of life-or-death football. Fyi, we're playing 4-4-2 - the Nazis might overrun us in midfield but we're old school!

World Cup Schedule Day 8:
Colombia v Ivory Coast - 5pm on BBC One
England v Uruguay - 8pm on ITV
Japan v Greece - 10.35pm on BBC One
Match of the Day: England v Uruguay
England might have given one of their best major tournament performances in years against Italy, but they still didn't get any points out of it. That means today's game against Uruguay is essentially all-or-nothing for Roy Hodgson's men.
They could still squeeze through with a draw (and even a loss, mathematically), but if they want their fate in their own hands, they'll need victory this evening.
Uruguay were disappointing in their opener against Costa Rica and Luis Suarez is clearly not 100% fit, but if England's standards drop slightly, the South American team have the potential to cause an upset and end England's World Cup party early.

The time for talk is over. Thank God. When the draw was made for 2014, England fans gave a weary shrug and presumed it would be an early exit from Brazil. However, as the months have passed, that total lack of expectation has flipped on its head. Suddenly, there's a weird sense of optimism about Roy Hodgson's team. Why do we feel like we've got a case of deja vu?
All the talk in the build-up has been about which exciting forwards should make the final cut (and which shouldn't) and about overcoming the sweltering heat of Manaus. The only thing nobody seems to be mentioning is Italy.

David Beckham has made his first serious steps into the world of broadcasting in a new BBC travel documentary, Into The Unknown.
Taking a break from football and the world of fashion, Beckham heads out on a road trip in Brazil and lets the cameras follow him as he goes on a motorbike ride into one of the few places in the world that the sports icon isn't recognised - the depths of the Amazon.
We attended a screening of some clips from the documentary and a Q&A with Beckham earlier today (June 2). Here are 7 things we learned at the show's launch:
1. Victoria Beckham's biggest concern is pretty funny.
If your husband was heading off on a trek across Brazil on a motorbike, what would be your first concern? His safety? Him staying in contact? With Posh Spice, it was something very, very different.
"The humidity will be the thing.

Stephen Hawking, the world-renowned physicist who penned A Brief History Of Time, is now lending his scientific mind to England’s World Cup squad by providing a statistical analysis of what will give them the best chance of capturing a championship win.
Stephen Hawking Advises England's World Cup Team
In his breakdown for the Roy Hodgson-led team, Hawking offered suggestions on uniform color, formation, referee preference, temperature and kick off time. "Statistically England's red kit is more successful and we should play 4-3-3 rather than 4-4-2,” according to Hawking. “Psychologists in Germany found red makes teams feel more confident and can lead them to being perceived as more aggressive and dominant. Likewise, 4-3-3 is more positive so the team benefits for similar psychological reasons.”
"The data shows we also need to hope for a European referee. European referees are more sympathetic to the English game and...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be hoping to join an elite group of players to have represented the Red Devils and won the World Cup when the tournament gets underway in Brazil.
As many as six current United stars could represent England at this summer’s tournament with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Rooney named in Roy Hodgson’s provisional 23-man squad, with Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley on standby.
Meanwhile, Shinji Kagawa, Juan Mata, Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie and Luis Nani will each represent Japan, Spain, Mexico, Holland and Portugal, respectively, at the finals.
And they too will be hoping to join Rooney in lifting the World Cup having also represented United, for in the 81 years since the first final, only five players in the history of the club have achieved this feat.

Roy Hodgson last week announced the England squad heading to Brazil next month to compete in the 2014 World Cup. His selections combined old hands such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney with a slew of inexperienced tyros like Everton’s Ross Barkley and Southampton’s Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley. While the bravery can’t be denied, big questions remain over how well the chosen players will fit together as a team and whether now is the right time to be throwing youngsters into the mix.
England face an uphill task in even getting out of the group stage once their tournament kicks off in the sweltering humidity of Manaus on June 14th. Their first opponents, Italy, must be considered strong contenders to reach the latter stages of the competition at least, while Uruguay’s fearsome attack and Costa Rica’s tight defensive unit...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants Ashley Cole to boost his side’s Champions League hopes when the defender quits Chelsea this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Cole has confirmed he will leave Chelsea this summer, telling his one million Twitter followers: “I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent”.
“Sadly, it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them.”
And now, Liverpool are poised to swoop for the former Arsenal defender, who is also being tracked by Real Madrid, Monaco and a number of Mls sides.
Rodgers however hopes the offer of more Champions League football and being part of a young and exciting squad will convince the veteran to stay in England next season.
The Liverpool chief knows his squad is thin on the ground when it comes to Champions League experience, and could be stretched as the...

Fa chairman Greg Dyke summed up the feelings of many with his throat slitting gesture as England’s 2014 World Cup group was drawn. This generation of players has been England’s worst in some time and putting them up against Italy and Uruguay, both hotly tipped as contenders for the latter stages of the tournament, suggests a strong possibility of England failing to make it out of the group stage for the first time since 1958, where they failed to win a single game (although they have, of course, failed to qualify at all since then).
England’s hopes are not quite so bleak as they may seem, though. The 2014 group is admittedly a much greater challenge than the E.A.S.Y. (England, Algeria, Slovenia, “Yanks”) draw that England struggled with in 2010, but it is not the dreaded Group of Death. Fellow unseeded Europeans...

The third instalment of our mini series sees us cast our beady eye over the men trusted with stifling out the threats posed by some of the world’s most potent strikers in this summer’s World Cup. There are a number of hotly contested positions in the England squad but none more so than in Hodgson’s back line. We’ve whittled the field down to eight defenders that will be named in the provisional squad on 13 May and one unlucky player set to miss out.
In a group stage featuring opposing strikers such as Suarez, Cavani and Balotelli there is no doubt that Hodgson will be praying his defence can hold strong and stay cool in the South American heat. England have boasted a wealth of quality defenders over the previous decade and whilst there will be fewer ‘big names’ travelling to this tournament, with...

In the second of our mini series, we take a look at ten midfielders who have done enough to secure their spot in Roy Hodgson’s provisional England squad and one that is set to miss out.
With England’s ‘Golden Generation’ drawing to the end of their careers, the Three Lions’ midfield for this year’s tournament will be an interesting mixture of youth and experience. In a summer where English expectations are lower than they have been for decades, it is surely the perfect opportunity to hand valuable tournament game time to England’s future stars. Roy has boldly said that he will pick players based on form rather than reputation, but there’s no doubt that he is still a cautious manager and there will be a number of midfielders the wrong side of their 30′s in this squad.

Roy Hodgson is set to name his provisional 30 man squad for the World Cup on 13 May. In the build up to the much anticipated squad announcement we’re casting our keen eye over which Englishmen have done enough to book their seat on the flight to Brazil, whilst waving goodbye to those who are set to miss the cut.
We’ve got four articles lined up, each giving a comprehensive guide to a different aspect of Hodgson’s squad, and we’ll be releasing one a week in the build up to 13 May.
Where better to start than by taking a look at the men tasked with finding the back of the net in South America. It’s no secret that England have struggled for quality forwards in recent years. There was a time when we were blessed with a wealth of talent but the likes of Shearer,...
